Review of restaurant. It's a 5 star for a modest family place, 4 on a complete range that goes from a dump to highest end/cost. Saturday evening I called for res. for 7 1 1/2 hour before. Was told they were very busy with several parties. Mgr. checked an said he'd have a table but wait for food could be 1/2 hour. We arrived and all tables were full except the one for us with big RESERVED sign Were waited on in reasonable time and food was not overly delayed, despite the several large parties. Kudos for taking good care of us while managing a very busy load. Fish and chips huge and the best (13.95). Most expensive (24.95) was lobster and shrimp over linguine. It was delish, well cooked and had at least 5 large shrimp, 6 nuggets of lobster. Other dishes $17 - 23 were all great. Service was sup[erb! Waitress Jill and others who helped were friendly, attentive and really sweet to the 9 and 5 y.o. girls. House wine was decent and a good pour for $6. Special martini, $9, was well made. It's been probably 20 years since I've played this course, and now I remember why! I will NOT return, nor can I recommend playing there. First, the price. $100 for greens fees with cart, for a Friday. Ridiculous and not justified! Likely were gouging with it being day before holiday. Second, starting everyone that day on the 10th tee. A reason for which no one there had the answer to. They said something about making the fturn and being able to get food at the grill, none of that was up and running that early anyway. Not good. Many groups were not happy about that either. We had a 0614 tee time and did not tee off till 0635. How in the world can you be that far off that early in the day? One reason is, no starter initially. That's no way to manage timely tee times and keeping pace. Third,, the course conditions were really bad. In particular, the tee boxes and greens! Many of the tee boxes had no grass at all. Standing in dirt trying to find a place to tee it up. Horrible!!!! The greens, many of which have disease all over them, are burnt, etc, which is just uncalled for. This can't just be blamed on a most recent heat wave as these problems have clearly existed for some time. Lastly, the course clearly has spent a fortune on their new golf carts, GPS, etc. Computer screens, and carts that will completely stop moving on their own if you happen to stray slightly off their "path". Speeds changing randomly on their own, etc. Very frustrating!! And unnecessary!! It's not that great a course that needs this kind of technology. Also, the little robotic lawn mowers all over the place are not that great either. The little things get in the way, do a crappy job, and are also not needed. Even to the point where you can see how their destroying the edges of the greens because they can't do as good a job as a human being. Put some grounds crews back to work and fix that! But now we know why it costs so much to play there. We're all paying for these unnecessary things. Instead, the owners should be spending that money on tee boxes and greens! And get rid of some of that unnecessary stuff. Again, NOT worth what they're charging, and conditions are not good!! read more

You know the scene in Tin Cup where Don Johnson hits his 7 iron down the street, still going? Welcome to Winnipaug Country Club. We played this course as part of the WEEI VIP Golf Card - every course on that card is well maintained and a treat to play. But Winnipaug was downright unmaintained and made for an unenjoyable round. I will say that the greens were - for the most part - in good shape, hence the 2 stars. They are well sloped and challenging in spots, and they'd make for a nice round if the rest of the course was half as good. Simply put, Winnipaug is lacking water. From the tees to the fairway, it was like playing on asphalt. I was often looking for tufts of grass to place my ball in the fairway. The cart paths were often also an adventure. I don't care if it's a Don Ross or a Pete Dye or a Jack Nicklaus - a Jaguar isn't a Jaguar if you don't change the oil and get it tunedup... read more

The course presents good golfing challenges. No two holes are the same. The greens are in good shape, but the rest of the course could use an upgrade. The pro shop attendees leave much to be desired. They are certainly not interested in working with you at all. The manner is gruff and courteous to anyone asking questions. read more

Been playing golf here close to 20 years and never have I seen such poor conditions of the course, clubhouse and attitude of the staff. If you play here you can expect the following.... the worst fairways you have ever played on...better to call them hard pan rollers or weedways. Even playing a scramble with preferred lies they suck....grass does not grow...cows could not survive on this course!!! The greens somehow were in good shape for the most part. The poor beverage cart girl only had Bud Heavies and some random light beer to sell. The bar couldn't even stock the beverage cart with decent refreshments on a hot September day. It's sad that such a nice Donald Ross layout has gone to pasture. This course needs hundreds of thousands of dollars in restoration. I hope one day the course gets the attention it needs to be a championship course again. Until that day comes, I would be back to play this travesty of a course. read more

Played this course many times over the years but this most recent round was the 1st time back in ages. Tee time was 1020 and finished at 3pm for a threesome. We trailed a foursome the entire way and had a threesome behind us on almost every t-box. (Who btw hit into us on 5 holes). We saw the cart girl only once during the entire round. Greens were in good shape and fairways were rough & dryed out. Pro Staff & Starter were solid. On a scale to 5 - Course condition is a 2, staff is a 3, greens are a 4, time to complete the round is a 1, price/value is a 2. Pack a lunch & bring your own drinks if you're considering the course as you're gonna be out there a while all on your own. read more

The worst experience ever at a golf course. The course was in horrible shape, and was more expensive than one of the best courses I've played. The guy in the pro shop was a rude person and many people agreed with us. He charged my son for an adult rate saying there was no "kids" rate when we have had the kids rate here many times before. It was 144 dollars for 3 people to play nine holes on a Monday afternoon. I will never be here again. read more

Recently I had a poor experience at Winnapaug Country Club. Have held an annual tournament there for over 20 years. At my most recent outing, 3 players dropped out the day before we were supposed to play. The three people were from the same family. They had an unexpected death in the family, and we're unable to play. Over the course of the 20 + years of playing at Winnapaug, as a group, we have had an occasional player of two, be unable to play for various legitimate reasons. Have never had a problem with the course. This year, the course called me, while in the middle of the tournament, insisting on payment for the three players who we're unable to play. I've never heard of this in 35 years of playing golf, let alone just my annual gathering, at Winnapaug. I told Gaye Penney what had happened, and she could care less. She stated that I obviously had no understanding of how a business is run. Ironically, I was a licensed contractor for 40 years until my retirement. I could see her point if the course was crowded, and we were preventing others from play in those spots. But the tee was open behind my group for several blocks of tee times, with no players in site behind my last group during our day of play. When we finished, the parking lot had a handful of cars in it, hardly a busy day to play. In conclusion, the manager had no time for conversation, other than insisting for immediate payment. After playing here for our annual gathering, as well as my personal play for over 30 years, we (I) will no longer be returning to play here. I had never had any issues with the previous owners, even when a player or two couldn't make it on short notice. The course has been in severe deterioration, since the new ownership has taken over. I continued to support them even though there our several other course nearby. It's a shame to see a course, almost a 100 years old, go downhill like Winnapaug has. The fact that the course had only one employee working when we checked in upon arrival, is a statement of how much they care about customer service. The poor man was responsible for receiving payments, delivering carts, and organizing tee times. A direct result of our group teeing off 15 minutes late. The group had no issue with that, but we were collectively in agreement about what a shame it was why no one else was working. read more

I'm partial because this is my home course. Forgiving track with elevation changes, sea views from #17 tee box. Holes 10-13 are across the road most with bay views. Not many Donald Ross courses still around; this is a must play when at the Rhode Island shore. Don't pass up a sandwich at the clubhouse, the food is always good and the beer comes in unique pub glasses. read more

Sorry, but this has to be one of the worst maintained and uncared for tracks I have EVER played. I guess the Senior weekday rate of $40 bucks was within a reasonable amount for 18 holes with cart, but man,.. was this a bad golf course. I have played golf all over the country and many places in Europe and can honestly say this was the worst cared for golf course ever experienced. I know the club house attendent mentioned "some construction" that the new owners (3 years ago?) are working on, but they seemed to have made very little progress, crabgrass, mounds of dirt, tee areas a disgrace, etc. Greens were fine, but play with this warning read more

In my 50+ years I have never encountered a worse collective display of poor customer service at a "golf club". From the moment we arrived at the clubhouse until we dropped off the cart at the end of the round we were confronted by rude, disinterested uncaring staff. That added to the horrible condition of the course (other than the nice greens amazingly) made for an unpleasant outing on a beautiful day. This was a total disappointment, and frankly not worth the drive, my time, nor even the "Fall rate" of $30 walking for 18. Little did they tell us (or their website advise us) that: 1. The practice/wedge area would not be open (apparently it hasn't been open in quite a while). 2. Probably 75% of the holes had assorted construction projects, either ground under repair, or were just not not being maintained. The place was shoddy, either with "projects", or just generally with weeds, downed branches and trees. 3. There was no water available on the course. No one advised us of this, though it soon became obvious since there were no towels on even the ball-washing equipment. Maybe that's why we spotted the cart girl circulating 3 or 4 times during our round? 4. Between the airport (although it was fun seeing the little planes take off), the ATVs on an adjoining property, and a road construction/repair project abutting the course (and ground shaking), it was not a particularly calm place to be. I had played here 3 yrs ago (under the new ownership) and had high hopes that their ambitious planned improvements would now start to be seen. I was sadly wrong. They have a really long way to go. I won't be back. I hope that the restaurant can keep the $$ coming in for the owners. It would be a shame to lose a Donald Ross course in RI. read more

This old course plays 6,361 yards from the longest tees with a par of 72, a course rating of 70.6 and slope rating of 124. Bent grass greens. Did I mention that it was designed by Donald J. Ross, ASGCA? Could definitely use some upkeep - bunker work, cart paths, fairways, etc. but the design is pure Donald Ross. Open year round - weather depending. I hadn't played Winnapaug for three years, due to the complaints that are well-documented in other, older reviews. Hearing the news that management had changed, I gave it a try a few weeks ago. And went back last weekend. And will be there again Thursday. The course isn't back yet, but the effort is clear. The greens and area surrounding the greens are superb. The paths are inproved in several areas. However, the tee boxes are still a mess, and the fairways still need work (a task not helped by the hot, dry summer). But the ingredients for a great Ross course are there, and I will continue to support this course with high hopes for continued improvement. This is a local classic, and it finally seems it might have the ownership it needs and deserves. Oh, and the food is already fixed- excellent lunch! In fairness, it probably rates three stars at the moment, unless you know what it was like over the past several years and can appreciate how far it's come back. I bought an annual weekday membership in the fall of 2017 hoping to meet local golfers with whom to play regularly. The pro shop guy (Chris) said he'd connect me with the Women's League. Well, big fat zero. I met no one and I'm still not sure if there even is a Women's League. This is a very unfriendly, exclusive place. Such a shame. Donald Ross design near the beach but that's about it. I played this course years ago and came back and played yesterday. Very disappointing. I understand no irrigation on the fairways and therefore no grass but the tee boxes were overrun with weeds and the bunkers left alone for weeks. The greens were okay though. Drive the extra few minutes to any one of their competitors and spend less and have a much nicer course. read more

Restaurant Review: What an amazing comfort to find such a gem on the south county coast. We are here a few times over the course of a two week vacation to this beach front community. First time was on a Thursday night, lured in by the dinner for two special we had been told about by some locals. We had the chicken risotto and pork chop calabrese....the risotto was perfect with just the right amount of cream and cheese, the pork chop,recommended by the waitress (I cant believe I'm writing a review about a pork chop) was amazing! Grilled to perfection served with fried potato, onions and banana peppers, it must have been marinated in something special because I have never tasted such flavor from a piece of pork. We came back for lunch another day and were so impressed we had to come back to try the fish and chips...again amazing...if we knew this was the high bar of this town we would've come here for all our meals. We will be back next summer, and will definatley be returning to winnapaug! read more

I am not reviewing the golf course. We tried the restaurant on a Thursday night. Two dinners and a bottle of wine for $34. Great deal. We had the Tortellini, Meatloaf, and Chicken Risotto. All delicious. Our server was very friendly and helpfully. Large portions. They have a special menu for this night. They are all mostly Italian entrées with a couple of seafood entrées . I must say better then Venice down the road. I hope they are still here next year with the same Chef. Great Job. read more

Restaurant review. Nice menu with alot of variety. Prices are reasonable. Went there twice for dinner. On the first visit we had the prime rib. Decent cut but tough and overcooked. On the second visit, we had a baked fish casserole. It was overcooked and dried out. One would think they could do better than using Progresso bread crumbs. The menu and the facility has potential but they need to get someone in the kitchen who knows what he/she are doing. We gave it 2 chances and won't be back. read more

*REVIEW OF THE RESTAURANT* I decided to have a small (40 person) party at Winnapaug this past weekend and I was nothing but pleased with every single part of it! To start, I requested that the outside be reserved only for my guests at the party. The Winnapaug staff was able to accommodate this for me which helped make the night extra special! Now moving on to the food, for appetizers the restaurant made 3 types of chicken wings, clam fritters and flat bread pizzas which were all to die for!!!!! The wings were crisped to perfection and tossed in the perfect amount of sauce... everyone greatly enjoyed them as well as the other apps. Next, we had a dinner buffet with chicken parmesan and two types of pene (Alfredo and marinara). The dinner was phenomenal!! The chicken was so tender you only needed a fork to cut it! Again, all guests and myself were very pleased. Our server Kate and the event coordinator Maria were very sweet and readily available for anything we needed throughout the night. The service was AMAZING. Overall we had a wonderful experience and I will definitely be back!!! Thank you Winnapaug! read more

Course is ok. I traveled to play it to see another Donald Ross course. I was quite taken back by the conditions considering the architect and his other courses ive played. The elevations were ok, lots of greens typical of ross. Im not sure aboutht e "ocean views" that many speak about, one hole plays towars the water and its a par 3 about 160 if i remember correctly. the conditions on that hole are prob the worse on the course. hard sand throughout all the bunkers. I played it for a good price so overall its "A-OK", but not a preferred course. If they put some $ into the course it could probably be a great course though.... read more

I have played this course and also had lunch there many times. The food and service in the restaurant is good and they typically have a decent number of beers on tap. The course is fun to play and has some challenging holes. The front 9 is fairly hilly and is not an easy walk, but not impossible. The back 9 has several holes near the salt marsh and these tend to be very flat, but offer nice views. In general I would only call the course conditions fair, with some bare and dead areas on the fairways and also on some of the greens. I think this is not too uncommon for a course near the shore. The walk back to the clubhouse from the 9th green is substantial and requires you to cross the first fairway. All in all though, this is a nice course to play a round if you are in the area and a good choice if you want to go out as a single. The price is reasonable. read more

This past Monday I brought a group of over 20 golfers to play Winnepaug. We had played there in past years but this was our first visit since the ownership change. What a change in attitude and course conditions! This Donald Ross design is now benefiting from proper care and maintenance. Many of our group thanked me for giving it a try and were impressed with the improvements made and underway. The greens were fast and true, the sand traps were in good shape and the fairways on their way to full recovery. There were a number of temporary tee boxes because the regular tees were being thatched and reseeded. The restaurant was also a pleasant surprise with excellent lunches efficiently served. We look forward to returning to this historic course many times. read more

Played 9 on 8/29/16..... Saw some encouraging reviews....... Alas it was not all it's cracked up to be!!!! Such a shame, a Donald Ross course that is in desperate shape!!!!! I know this summer has been a harsh one with no rain BUT that does not forgive a lackluster (imo) job a groundskeeping!!!! Out on a Monday with minimal play and NOT ONE bit of maintenance being done!!!! NO ONE!!!! I am fortunate to be able to play on Monday's and at every other course I play at there's always someone doing some kind of maintenance but not here!!!! Seems to me they're packing it in! It's sad!!! Could be a gold mine!!!! Tee boxes on tough shape with tall grass on them and some were spotty..... Fairways, long grass not cut and patchy in a lot of areas..... Rough non existent and hardpan (sort of excusable with weather) but had to hit 4 shots off of bare lies!!!! Greens were at least passable. I hope they will turn it around I'd like to try it again in a couple years!!!! read more

Winnapaug is a sweet track--some ocean views, classic Donald Ross design, decent length from the tips, nice pub with friendly staff--a very solid golfing experience all around that is open to the public. Normally the rate is $45, which I would consider to be fair, but I recently purchased a collegegolfpass (www.collegegolfpass) which allowed me to play with a cart for only $25 bucks!! I played at 2PM on Friday (saved an extra $5 because of it), normally with the collegegolfpass it will cost $30 with cart, but still, any time you can play for under $30 with a cart on a high quality course like this, it's totally worth it. I convinced my friend in Business school to get a collegegolfpass as well and we will be coming back here quite frequently given the savings and all around good course. read more
