Friedman came recommended from my parents who have gone to him for years. My husband and I have now been going to him for 2 years and are completely satisfied. He is thorough, extremely nice - listening to any concerns, addressing them honestly and to the point. I rarely even look at the glasses that optometrists have in their offices but took the leap at his place and have now found two great pairs which were both very affordable and manage to outlive my active lifestyle with two kids constantly man handling them. I also get lots of compliments which is a personal bonus. Through the choosing-the-right-frame-process, Friedman - and his team came in to help me so overall, it took a very short time and was unexpectedly fun. The review below is my opinion based on the poor quality of service that I feel I have received from Montclair Vision Services. While I understand that the lab creates glass, and not the eye doctor, I am mostly upset by the poor customer service I have received from the doctor's office. At the request of Dr. Friendman, I have edited my prior review to distinguish these facts. I would highly recommend that you DO NOT go to Montclair Vision Services for any of your vision needs. I have gone there several years in a row (because they are in network), and each time I am dissatisfied with the quality of the service and the eyeglasses that I purchase. My most recent experience is what put me over the top and has ensured I will NEVER go there again. After waiting three weeks for my new glasses, I noticed the lens in the frame was misshaped and crooked leaving a noticeable gap of no glass between the frame and lens. I pointed this out to Dr. Friedman because I was worried that the lens would crack (like the prior pair of semi-frameless glasses I got from his office) and he agreed to send them back to the lab. My husband, who also purchased new glasses this year, was also dissatisfied with his new glasses, which came back much thicker than the lenses he ordered two years prior. Dr. Friedman agreed to send both pairs back to the lab, and we were happy with that. Today after waiting 2 weeks for our frames to come back, I picked up my new glasses only to find that they are in the exact same condition they were in before. My husband's glasses had the same, thick lenses, but they were polished and rounded on the rims. (This is not what we wanted, but they had been worked on). Both, Dr. Friedman and his assistant assured me that both pairs of glasses had been sent back to the lab, but it honestly looks like nothing was done to my pair and the gap between the lens and frame remains. (Perhaps they were sent back, and nothing was done... I cannot be sure). I know that he doesn't make the glasses, so poor craftsmanship is on the lab, but I am not in communication with the lab, and I feel like the Montclair Vision Services needs to push the lab for better craftsmanship. Period. Finally - one more reason I will not return has to do with a direct conversation I had with the eye doctor this year. During my exam with Dr. Friedman, I told him a story about how while on vacation my prescription sunglasses (that I purchased from him the year before) had lost a screw. This was the 3rd time in a year that the screw had come out, and each time I went to a drug store to buy one of those little kits to fix it. I told Dr. Friedman that I happened to be standing in front of an Optometrists office when the screw came out, so I went in an asked if they could help me with a screw. That doctor found a screw for me and fixed my glasses free of charge, saying "you know those eyeglass kits from the drugstore never have the correct size screws!" When I told Dr. Friedman about how the other doctor had fixed my glasses he said "WOW... I AM SURPRISED HE HELPED YOU. IF SOMEONE HAD COME IN OFF THE STREET LIKE THAT TO MY OFFICE, I WOULD HAVE TURNED THEM AWAY" (really?!... turned them away over a screw that probably cost you half a penny and takes 3 seconds to install... in my opinion, this says a lot about your customer service!!!). 21 days ago I had posted a review on Dr. Friedman. I finally received my prescription in the mail. When I went to Costco to fill my prescription whom I usually fill my prescription with pointed out that my contact size was completely different from what I've been accustomed to for the past few years. They asked me if I experienced my contacts popping out of my eyes and drying which has been happening for the past year since seeing Dr. Friedman. All along Dr. Friedman has been pointing out that I have been putting my contacts in wrong after have been using contacts for 15+ years only to find out that Dr. Friedman has provided me a wrong prescription size for contacts. Not to mention when Costco called to confirm the employee working stood in shock for a moment while speaking to Dr. Friedman. She hung up the phone and stated she has never been spoken to in the manner Dr. Friedman spoke to her. He snapped at her and was rather unprofessional on the phone. I could only assume since I did not order contacts through his services, that he became displeased. Point is, I wouldn't even trust Dr. Friedman with my worst enemy for an eye exam. He is completely unprofessional, rude, and literally smells just like his attitude. The only reason I gave 1 star instead of none is because his receptionist Brittany is such a sweetheart and I find her extremely patient to tolerate Dr. Friedman. I find it admirable of her to still find in her heart to always stay pleasant to work in such an environment. read more

I recently visited Montclair Vision Services for the first time since moving to the area. I was getting constant migraines and at the time I was unsure as to why. My boyfriend suggested that it may be due to my glasses(My previous prescription was 2 years old). I called the Office and spoke with the receptionist who was very helpful - Exchanged my insurance information and scheduled an appointment with Dr. Friedman. I arrived and met with the receptionist and after filling out some standard paperwork I was immediately taken into the side room for some vision test. Dr. Friedman ran the standard test and talked to me about my migraine issue. After the standard test we went into the Exam room and began my eye-exam. Throughout my exam Dr. Friedman was extremely nice and seemed genuinely concerned about my migraines and how to rectify the problem I was having. After we found the perfect match for my prescription we headed into my favorite part - picking out a frame. I'm extremely picky when it comes to frames. Dr. Friedman had more then enough of a selection to choose from, and even ran around the room for me when I described what I was looking for (all the frames he showed me were even within my insurance plan pricing). I found a great pair of glasses and even found a great pair of sunglasses that are different from what I normally would have chosen. I placed my order of what I wanted and expected to wait up to 2 weeks to receive my glasses(My previous ophthalmologist always took forever) but to my surprise within a few days I was called back and they were ready. They were exactly how I expected them and I immediately noticed a difference(especially while driving!) and my migraines stopped. read more

I appreciate that Dr Friedman and his staff respond quickly via phone or email. This has helped me schedule my appointments with ease. At every point of communication Montclair Vision Services made me feel comfortable. Dr Friedman and his staff are very patient, kind, and personable. I went in to get an eye test and contacts -and Dr Friedman thoroughly reviewed my report and explained my contact lens options. I liked the ergonomic setup of the modern eye test equipment and how smooth the process was. The staff is very professional and considerate. They even took the time to walk me through the valuable rebate offers which I could get from my contact purchase. 3 months later I needed an eye test form completed to renew my drivers license and Dr Friedman helped me get it done quickly. Soon I will be returning to get some new glasses frames and I will be looking forward to the visit! I have been going to MVS for about 17 yrs. Believe me, if i thought i was not getting the service i deserve, i would've switched a long time ago. Yes, Dr. Friedman can get a little testy at times but more often than not he is congenial and sometimes funny. Average wait time after my planned appointment has been around 10-30 minutes. That doesn't kill me. The service is good and i would recommend him to a relative or friend. read more
