The experience my friend and I had tonight was definitely not awful. The waitress was as attentive as possible. The pizza, including the cauliflower crust variations, are surely made in house in addition to their pizza sauce (that which has a nice balance of savoury flavour and subtle sweetness). The chicken parmigiana is also in house breaded along with the sandwich roll. However, the mozzarella sticks that we shared had too much salt within the breading. The vibe of the restaurant itself (which could possibly be due to being closer to closing therefore they use less lighting) was a little bit sleep inducing but does its effort to capture that of a true Italian restaurant. The place is a decent size with lots of tables, but we were the only ones there which made for a weirdly empty vibe. Staff was very friendly, which we appreciated. Dessert was a letdown. As a big cannoli fan, I have to say it was the worst I've had, and the tiramisu wasn't much better. If you're looking for authentic Italian food, especially Sicilian, this is the place to go in Lynchburg. It's nothing like chain "Italian" places. My absolute favorite dish is the shrimp portofino - the pasta is al dente, the garlic and mushrooms are perfectly savory with the shrimp. My husband loves the Bolognese, he alternates different pastas with it. The bread is amazing! If I weren't saving room for the pasta I could easily eat three plates of the fresh bread! They have Sicilian style pizza (the large square pies with thick crust), a whole Sicilian entree section, Italian pressed sandwiches, plenty of traditional Italian appetizers, and classic pasta dishes. I truly love the food here and it reminds me of my family. My husband has great memories here enjoying pizza with his high school friends. We will definitely keep coming back! read more

My family and I had reservations for lunch on May 11, 2024. It was a special family meal to celebrate my daughter's graduation. Sadly, my 87 year old mother became so sick as she ate her meal that she threw up at the table. Immediately after we left, my daughter and sister also became I'll with stomach related issues.Tomato sauce was the food common to my family members who became I'll. I called the restaurant at approximately 9:10 pm, on May 11th and spoke to the manager. While the waitress manager said "sorry," she also said that my family probably had a sickness that they caught from one another. (We live in different regions and households and were only together for the graduation ceremony ) The manager also said they fed 800 people at the restaurant and no one else became sick. I asked if some type of accommodation could be provided, she sternly said "NO"! When I told her I would report the incident, she told me to "go ahead." It was at that time that I told her she was rude. She hung up on me. Restaurant workers need to display professionalism and take reports of food related illnesses resulting from what was consumed at their establishment seriously. Instead, this employee failed to ask about details like what was consumed or the name associated with the reservation. Given my experience with the manager, I can not recommend this restaurant to ANYONE. read more

Service was good for takeout. Ambiance was dark and a little creepy, but again, I had takeout. Our food was horrible and dry with practically no sauce at all. They provided one teeny salad dressing for each of our salads and we had to use our own dressing from home. The restaurant that I originally wanted to get our food from did not open until 4. I actually drove there and paid for a pint of their sauce when it opened, and though their sauce was good it did not help out the two sad spaghetti and rigatoni dishes. Too much money wasted. This may sound harsh, but the spaghetti was not good and the rigatoni was hard, overcooked and dry and did not seem fresh. We could not even eat our meals. Shout out to Monte Carlo restaurant. Went there after church tonight for dinner and was not disappointed. They have the best authentic Italian food in my opinion in Lynchburg. I had the clams and shrimp over angel hair in marinara sauce, comes with linguini but you can substitute any pasta on their menu. It was superb, huge shrimp and big cherry stone clams. Others in my group had the Sicilian Salmon with ziti pasta, and shrimp portofino over angel hair, country lamb filet, classic a vegan meal, shrimp parmigiana and all were delicious. Comes with garlic knots and big house salad or Cesar salad. Huge portions with leftovers for tomorrow. Have been there numerous times and always had good service. The waitress, excuse me but didn't get her name, Is always pleasant, attentive and personable. The place is decorated nicely with Italian statues, a fish tank and decorations. My niece graduated from Liberty University's High School Academy today 5/11/24. Our family went to Monte Carlo for lunch. We all ordered different meals. One of us ordered pepperoni pizza, one ordered baked ziti with ricotta (there was no ricotta in it) and my mother an 87 year old woman ordered chicken Marsala. My mother threw up at the table after eating half of her meal. My niece got sick in her car after eating the pizza and I developed a horrible stomach ache and headache driving back home from the restaurant, My sister, mother of my niece called the restaurant. The manager was extremely rude and unconcerned and was not interested in resolving the matter by returning the money on the meals that made us sick. Seeing my mother throwing up at the table after only eating half of her meal was very upsetting for us and for her. Do not visit this restaurant. They don't care if their food makes people sick. You're either going to have a 2 star experience or 4 star experience. Thus, we went with the solid 3 stars. I've been to Italy and the Mediterranean several times. The food here is pale cousin to the cuisine I had in Sicily. The prices are descent for the quantity and quality. The owner and staff are pretty uncomfortable to be around. Feels like you're walking on egg shells in the gaudy dinning room. The garlic knots and bread sticks taste like they've been sitting in a bucket in the back and just heated up for a few minutes in the pizza oven. The pizza is okay, not mind blowing nor gut-wrenching. Pizza is a safe bet here. I wouldn't be surprised if they got all their food supplies from the Super Walmart right across Old Forest Road. There's a Taco Bell right next door, which probably has just as fresh food. Don't be surprised to see cobwebs in Monte Carlo- something you won't see in Taco Bell. There's also Harbor Inn Grill next door which is just as much of a rip off for meh food as Monte Carlo is. read more

Worst restaurant in Lynchburg. I don't think I've ever had food from a restaurant that I legitimately spat out on the first bite. I ordered "eggplant" Parmesan, which I still question today if it was actually eggplant. I even got my husband to try it because it may have been meat (he had no clue either). He ordered veal Parmesan himself, which he barely ate a few bites of. I ended up eating the spaghetti around it that was edible, though the "tomato sauce" used was most certainly Campbell's tomato soup. The bruschetta was okay; it had a good garlic taste but was pretty crispy. The breadsticks were rock hard and tough to bite with a corresponding "marinara sauce" that WAS actually tomato sauce. The complimentary bread that came with was probably what I ate most of because I was so darn hungry, but even that was very crispy on the edges and extremely chewy (but still edible). Honestly, I'm not that picky; this place just has a lot of work to do if they want to stay in business because I can guarantee they don't get repeat customers. We have been coming to Monte Carlo for 40+ years. It is the only authentic Sicillian/Italian restaurant in town-food, wine and bread are delicious and the owner , cooks and wait staff make you very welcome. It is not flashy but we need places like this - not chain overpriced restaurants. Had the Chicken Monte Bianco tonight and it was excellent. As good a meal as you can find around here for $13. They stayed open when the power was out during a blizzard and a derecho offering food when no one had power. Didn't even want to take money. Happy to serve. read more

An up date on the tenth anniversary of my first visit- This time we ordered take-out because, as the order taker reported, they don't do delivery any more (even tho their website shows they DO deliver) because they cant find a delivery driver. (Must be because of Covid. ) Anyway, we ordered a large amount of food and it was packed in pizza boxes- made it all more insulated, I supposed, and a lot easier to carry in the car than bags, etc. When we arrived at home everything was reasonably warm and ready to eat with a little microwave jolt. . BUT. The Fettuccine Alfredo was cold- not just "cooled off on the way", but cold as in "right out of the fridge" So we heated it up, and the watery sauce thickened up and it was fine. The calamari were a bit tough but that may have been due to the seven minutes it took to get it all home. By the way, we arrived right on time per the order taker's estimate as to the time the order would be ready. The salads were fine. The linguini with clams had tiny shards of shell- no big deal- gotta expect that. Overall, I think Monte Carlo has been a little less wonderful as the years go by. And that's sad. Another case in point... consider our recent mid-week carryout order of salads and pizza from Monte Carlo. While the prices were unchanged, it was evident that the kitchen had skimped on the ingredients: the salad was filled with Romaine stems, the dressing was watered down and the pizza had significantly less cheese and toppings compared to our last order in January. Needless to say, this made for a negative impression. Now, it could just be that we ordered on an "off night". Or, the kitchen simply blew it on this one dish. Maybe the benefit of the doubt should come into play here. But given that the kitchen is always under the watchful eye of the owner and his family, that our previous experiences have been positive and that the current economic condition has caused many people to cut back on dining expenditures, I wonder whether we witnessed first-hand a business decision that favors the course of cost-cutting over increasing prices. Let me preface this review by declaring that I love Italian food. If my waistline could handle pasta, rich sauce, and creamy cheeses I would eat it everyday. Sadly, after dining at Monte Carlo I don't think I could see a piece of spaghetti without cringing. My boyfriend and I visited on a Saturday afternoon and found the place completely empty aside from one other couple. I don't judge restaurants based on the amount of people inside, I judge them on the food. We sat down and were immediately greeted by a waitress. She didn't have that much personality, but working in a ghost town might do that to you. I ordered spaghetti with mushrooms and marinara. My boyfriend ordered an eggplant pasta type dish with penne. We received bread that looked as unappetizing as it tasted. My caesar salad arrived and was average. The presentation of it was bland, and the lettuce looked a bit wilted. I still held hope for the main course, despite the increasing setbacks. My spaghetti finally arrived and my face almost fell into the dish. It was a plate of spaghetti swimming in a lake of marinara sauce that was obviously watered down. The penne dish had sauce that seemed burned or scraped from the bottom of a jar. I was not fooled. After eating a couple bites we decided to leave. I would not waste my time and energy in trying this place ever again. It is clear that they think customers won't notice if they are eating sauce from a bottle that has been diluted with water in order to save money. When we were honest with the waitress about the quality of the food her defense was that the owner is Sicilian. Being Sicilian does not make you a good cook. Taking the time and care to make a proper meal with fresh ingredients helps make someone a good cook. Nice try, Monte Carlo. You're fooling no one. read more

Travel for work so love me a good "mom and pop" shop locally owned restaurant. Not to mention have been in the hospitality industry for over a decade. MY EXPERIENCE: pulling in the car lot was empty.. RED FLAG #1 but still deciding to go in notice there's not one order to go or table occupied by any other patron. STILL my friends and I decided to give the place a try. ALL Condiments that came out "homemade" and not out of a frozen box or pre made tasted watered down using the wrong or 2 recipes leaving our taste buds in panic to ask for the check and pay for what was made and leave! Mind you that was only appetizers "calamari, garlic knots and mozzarella sticks" !! Long story short, once after asking for other condiments to just deal with it and not say anything to piss anyone off... the lack of apathy for a willing paying customers problem was a huge turn off.. a really good friend recommended this place and I was highly disappointed... the food "LOOKED" good but tasted like it was fried in old oil and "homemade" condiments were just as worst as "the manager's" way she treated us. I was staying in Lynchburg and couldn't find any delivery restaurants on Yelp so I found this in the phonebook. Last time I will do that! The first bad sign was that the delivery driver couldn't bother to come to my room but called me to ask me to come downstairs. Second, he brought a PENCIL for me to sign my credit card slip. Third- the food was awful. The meat lasagna consisted of overly acidic flavorless runny tomato sauce, noodles, sausage, and some melted cheese on top. The salad had flavorless runny ranch dressing. Oh, and the driver did not bother to bring napkins and silverware so I had to go back to the hotel customer service counter to beg for silverware!!! And the food was way overpriced!! :( read more

This past weekend, my husband, in-laws and I ventured over to the Monte Carlo Restaurant on Old Forest Road. Upon arriving at Monte Carlo, I was immediately struck by the darkness (let me clarify here that it was dark, not dimly lit) of the entry way, which then carried over into the dining area. I, personally, do not enjoy dining out in the dark (unless, of course, one is participating in a trendy "dining in the dark" experience restaurant, where one can fully anticipate such an environment). Thinking this was the desired ambiance that the owners were trying to achieve, I quickly surveyed the ceiling fixtures, which brought to light (pun intended) the reason for this situation; there were no less that 30+ light bulbs that were burnt out within our seating area. A problem with a simple solution, I felt. I also noticed that the decor was tragically outdated, creating a bit of a "forgotten old world" feeling, rather than resembling anything charming, which in turn did nothing to help the lighting situation (or lack, thereof). In addition, after glancing around the large dining room, I observed only two other tables of guests - on a Saturday night! So what about all those cars I saw parked out front? Well, I can only assume they were employee vehicles. Deciding to not let this be a deterrent, I/we opted to stay and try out the food. The menu consisted of traditional/standard Italian cuisine, with a few specialties mixed in for good measure.The majority of the entrées are served with soup, bread, and salad, and are, quite reasonably, priced for that amount of food at $10-15/entrée on average. The soup was just an average chicken broth based concoction, with a trace amount of pearl pasta and veggies; nothing fancy or special, but it was edible. The bread that was served was, again, nothing special; however, it was delivered quite a bit on the "extra-crusty" side for my taste, with the smaller of the two half-loaves being too burnt to eat. The salads were next, and were made of fresh romaine lettuce, with a couple of black olives and cucumber pieces tossed in for extra crunch. I had noticed on the menu that the ranch dressing was housemade (which I love!) and was eager to try their version. In keeping with the theme of the evening, the dressing was watery and lacked any real flavor profile. Once we finished with our salads, the entrées were served. Upon first glance, they seemed like your traditional Itailian fare - hot pasta served in individual baking dishes, with rich red sauces and tons of melted cheese. I adore Italian food and had ordered the baked manicotti; I was ready to eat! However, what I uncovered was an insult to real Italian cuisine. First, the "individual baking dishes" were actually aluminum tins that you toss after one use. I appreciate nice dishes and flatware when dining out at (what I had presumed to be) a nice restaurant. The sauce was bland and tasteless, and was covering severely (and I mean severely!) over cooked manicotti noodles, that were stuffed with a dreary center of mushy, flavorless beef filling. I was heartbroken! I took two bites and decided that was sufficient and could eat no more. After inquiring with my fellow diners about their meals, I found the same to be true around the table - flavorless sauces and fillings, as well as over cooked noodles. The only redeeming grace of this establishment was the service. Our young waitress, who was friendly, polite, attentive and eager to engage us in conversation, was fantastic and would be a true asset to any restaurant in the area. In addition, the efficiency with which our meal was served was timely and appropriate (however, this could be attributed to the very likely fact that everything had been prepared much earlier in the day and was just sitting in the back waiting to be ordered, heated up, and served). In summary, the ambiance, decor, lighting, and food quality were all very poor. Service and timeliness of our meals being served were excellent, thus leading to my "2" rating. read more

The Monte Carlo provides a truly wonderful and unique dining experience. Allow me to cover the basics. My wife and I return to the Monte Carlo regularly for one reason: the Italian selections are exceptional. Having raised four sons we have years of trying all the traditional pizza places in town. The pizza at the Monte Carlo is simply the best in town. My personal favorite is the Sicilian with all the toppings. This thick crust deep dish pizza is incredible. My wife's favorite is the Works, a thin crust pizza loaded with their quality toppings. Not only is the food exceptional, the meals are affordable. The atmosphere is unique. The painted murals of Italy are wonderful. It successfully reinforces the theme that this is a quality Italian restaurant. The third and final reason to eat at the Monte Carlo is the service. This is a family owned restaurant. The owners are in the kitchen and greeting customers upon arrival. Customers will hear conversations in Italian. The daughter, Nancy, is simply one of the most professional, kindest, and attentive waitresses in the city. When you are in the mood for a distinctive Italian meal or simply craving the best pizza in town, I highly recommend the Monte Carlo restaurant on Old Forest Road. read more
