Eggplant parm and forgot what the other pasta is

Came here to celebrate my bf's birthday and lo and behold, best Italian food we had in a while. Yes, they maybe a little on the pricey side, but the quality is superb. Spoke to the owner who is a humble man and he's also the chef; he takes pride in his grandmother's recipes. Highly recommended. The place is clean and we didn't see a live band that night, but that's okay.

We came here after being recommended this location by one of our professors and it was an experience! The first thing you notice when you walk in is it feels very rustic, everything appears to be made out of wood with a full bar on the left and desserts for display. Our group was served a collection of garlic bread knots with butter and it didn't disappoint! The bread was pillowy and soft and the butter spread easily and melted instantly. Next up was the salads and I personally got their wedge salad. Something that I dread is that in wedge salads, it can be difficult to wash the lettuce while maintaining its shape in a wedge but what I was served was crisp and fresh. The dressing was delicious and the salad came together cohesively. Hell, it was crisp enough to be cut with a knife which is what I had to do to eat it effectively. Nothing against the salad itself but the wedge salad was more of a disc and not a wedge. My friends got the caprese salad and whatnot. Everything was great thus far. We got a flatbread for the table to share and it was a bit lackluster. It was cheesy and bready and thin but a bit floppy for my tastes. It felt like a wasted opportunity. Finally the entrees, my friends got the diavolo, the carbonara, and the alfredo and everything was more or less what you would expect. The diavolo didn't have enough sauce but they made up for it slightly with all the shrimp they gave. The alfredo was very dense but more or less what you would expect from an alfredo. I wish that the mushrooms were cut a little smaller for the alfredo though. Another baffling decision was theirs to use blanched whole cloves of garlic. Not pan seared, not cooked, not roasted, but whole cloves of blanched garlic. It had all the appearance of raw garlic with none of the taste. It was... odd. The carbonara was fine. I personally got the chicken piccata with a lemon cream sauce. It was perfectly adequate. The only thing I would mention was that everyone's pasta noodle were slightly overcooked. Just a tad too soft. This place is definitely worth shot although it was odd that easily the best thing I ate here was a salad which is not what I would have expected from an Italian restaurant.

This is a hidden gem on Timberlake Rd! They are only open four days out of the week, but it is definitely a place worth making plans to go to. There was no one else here when I came for dinner a few weeks ago, which I thought was surprising since I can't wait to come back! Their garlic knot and salad were fairly standard compared to other Italian places in Lynchburg, but the tides turned when I was so impressed with my entree (eggplant parm). I think the major highlight was how beautiful the interior is. I would love to bring a group of people here. There is also a sort of romantic feel as well (perhaps I'll have to schedule a double date). I also loved the attentive service that made me feel like I was at a fine dining restaurant. Looking forward to returning soon!

Yes. I was unprepared to have my life changed by a wedge salad, but it was. Miriam, our server, was knowledgeable, polite, and very personable, reading our vibe and adjusting to be who we needed at the time. The actual best wedge salad I've ever had. Also, delicious cheesy bread and a great fettuccine Alfredo. My wife ALSO had the best lasagna she's ever had as well. We will be returning!

We joined our friends for dinner at the Carmela's at the Loft the last time we were in town and enjoyed it. We thought the menu was a bit small, but they have a niche and they do it well! I originally wanted to try the chicken Parmesan with zucchini noodles but they weren't keen on substitutions so I went with the lasagna, which was great. My significant other ordered a chicken dish with zucchini noodles and it was a decent sized portion. Our friend ordered the stuffed shells and that came in a fairly large portion as well. We all split an dinner roll appetizer which was good, too. We thought the prices were a little high, but chalked it up to pandemic inflation. Great little spot if you like Italian food, and if you are lucky you may even get to experience the jazz band!

This restaurant is super stingy in their portions. No water unless you request, no refills for drinks, bread only with order of entree.

I had the eggplant parm dinner (which is how I personally gage every Italian restaurant I eat at), with a side salad with homemade ranch dressing. I love that it's not Ken's from a giant jar. Nothing beats house made. The eggplant parm was delicious, and the sauce had a nice flavor. I'm from a massive Italian town up north where you can throw a stone in any direction and hit an Italian restaurant or pizza joint, so I'm very particular. I also have a culinary degree, which makes me even pickier. I will absolutely be returning, and can't wait to try other items from the menu.

Unfortunately, the chicken Marsala was disappointing. The sauce was very thin and watery, with a large amount of liquid collecting in the bottom of the container instead of coating the pasta and chicken. The mushrooms had a texture and flavor that reminded me of canned mushrooms. While the dish lacked the consistency I typically expect from chicken Marsala, the sauce was still very rich in flavor and savory. Based on this experience, I'd recommend the pizza, but I would skip the Marsala. They gave an accurate estimate of wait time, prices were reasonable, and from what I saw the restaurant was clean. I would also like to acknowledge it was later in the night and they were going to be closing in the next hour, which might have caused a bit of a rush on the food, I'm not really sure.

I had a pizza before and wasn't the most impressed, but I was willing to give them another try. Craving a salad tonight I decided to order and I'm so glad I did! The large chef salad is huge and packed! Tons of meat and cheese, literally a whole hard-boiled egg, four slices of tomato, multiple slices of cucumbers, etc. There were also 2 large cups of ranch and the ranch was just as amazing! This quite possibly the best chef salad I've had in over 20 years. It really took me back! It's so big I can easily get 2 meals from it. I added a pic under the photos so be sure to check it out. The price was even quite affordable. The only thing I could possibly think would make this better was if they cooked their own bacon, but the bacon bits on the salad were all real and great quality. None of the cheap stuff or artificial bacon bits. I also ordered the cheese bread to have a little something extra with the salad. I was thinking it was going to be cheesy bread sticks maybe, or one of those oval shaped breads covered in cheese. This is actually much bigger and about the size of medium pizza. There is plenty of cheese on it and the olive oil and garlic really put this cheese bread on another level. The crust tastes like pizza crust and the flavor is incredible. I had a large cup of marinara and it is also really good. Everything was exceptional, including the temperature, time, and service. And it may sound odd but the utensils included were also great quality, very durable. I could easily cut up the veggies and meats without concern the utensils would snap. I will most certainly be regularly visting Vitales and ordering this same meal. It's so good I don't know how I could go and not get the same thing. I'm telling everyone I know. Run, don't walk and you can thank me later!

This visit didn't land there. **FOOD** The issues here weren't about complexity. They were about fundamentals. The chicken parmesan sandwich set the tone. Instead of a proper cutlet, it came out as heavily breaded chicken strips. That changes the entire structure of the dish. It eats more like a shortcut than a decision, and not a good one. The cannoli didn't help. The shells were fine, but the filling was clearly not made in-house. That's where it falls apart. Cannoli filling is simple, and when a place skips even that step, it raises questions about the rest of the kitchen. Pizza and the rest of the table followed the same pattern. Nothing outright inedible, just consistently underwhelming. No one at the table finished with anything worth talking about, and that usually tells the story better than anything else. This isn't about chasing authenticity. It's about doing the basics correctly and choosing not to cut corners. **SERVICE** Service was polite and steady. Orders were taken correctly, food came out in a reasonable time, and there were no issues with attentiveness. That said, the service felt like it matched the room. Functional, but a bit worn down. Nothing wrong, just not much energy behind it. **AMBIENCE** The space feels dated and a little tired. Lighting is on the darker side, and the overall environment gives the impression that it hasn't been refreshed in a while. It's not uncomfortable, just lacking any sense of upkeep or intention. **CLOSING** This is the kind of place that doesn't fail because it's trying something difficult. It falls short because it isn't executing the basics well. There's a foundation here that could work, but right now it feels like it's been left alone too long. True Sicilian owned and run trattoria where there is a wide ranging menu of American and Italian specialties. We stuck with the Italian and some apps for the little ones. Apps come out quick and are decently sized which is great when you have two kids. The mac & cheese was homemade and not the boxed stuff - and my youngest tore into it and was literally wearing it all over his face - he loved it. We also had bruschetta, which was house made and excellent except it was served on sicilian pizza dough - would loved to have had real italian bread for that. Italian meals were shrimp parm and my wife had the seafood special (sort of a marechiara) and both were excellent. Sauce is good, maybe a tad too sweet for me, but good nonetheless. We had a lot of food and even with that we finished with spumoni ice cream - which I haven't had in years. Serving was huge and we all shared it. Service was adequate - the waiter had no clue what things are in Italian and needs to work on that, but otherwise all good. We walked out fat and happy. Definitely going back.
