The Monte Carlo provides a truly wonderful and unique dining experience. Allow me to cover the basics. My wife and I return to the Monte Carlo regularly for one reason: the Italian selections are exceptional. Having raised four sons we have years of trying all the traditional pizza places in town. The pizza at the Monte Carlo is simply the best in town. My personal favorite is the Sicilian with all the toppings. This thick crust deep dish pizza is incredible. My wife's favorite is the Works, a thin crust pizza loaded with their quality toppings. Not only is the food exceptional, the meals are affordable. The atmosphere is unique. The painted murals of Italy are wonderful. It successfully reinforces the theme that this is a quality Italian restaurant. The third and final reason to eat at the Monte Carlo is the service. This is a family owned restaurant. The owners are in the kitchen and greeting customers upon arrival. Customers will hear conversations in Italian. The daughter, Nancy, is simply one of the most professional, kindest, and attentive waitresses in the city. Horrible food. when I complained to the owner about the eggplant parmasean being bad he he got mad the dish was 16 he still charged me 10 and said to me not to come back again. He said if you're don't like my food don't come back. He was rude.. his son came out and wanted to almost fight me. He said I disrespected him. This was our first time there. And let me say this we were skeptical but as soon as our bruschetta came we were blown away. The food is sooooo amazing. Myself coming from a Italian family I'm very very picky about my Italian food. But this place is amazing and I was so please I raved about it all night. The people are extremely nice. We ordered takeout from here for the first time. The food was nice and hot and fresh. We ordered the Ziti and a Cheesesteak. The pasta was delicious and you could tell it was all fresh unlike the other Italian chains that are pre-made. The cheesesteak was a little different than what we are use to but still wasn't too bad. We went to try them out and I must say this place has it going on from service to food and their prices are reasonable. I had veal parmigiana that was so tender and delicious. My son had the lamb and he was impressed. The garlic bread sticks were plentiful, crisp and tasty for any garlic lover. They serve generous portions. I would not change a thing if it were up to me. Cheese wasn't very good and seafood was very dirty tasting. The Calamari has a very oily after taste and the vodka sauce they gave me was just an altered cream sauce that didn't even taste good. Best Italian restaurant in Lynchburg! You know that one place you search for but never find it? This is it! The owner and his wife both still speak Italian. The food is delicious and the prices are reasonable. This place has been a hidden gem in Lynchburg for more then 40 years it has the Italian look but not to flashy. If you want Americanized Italian go to Olive Garden... if you want real Italian food prepared by real Italians the Italian way it should a place that's owned & operated by real Italians give this place a try. You won't be disappointed. If you're a fan of Italian food you'll truly fall in love with this place! yeah you'll probably see some bad reviews, but people like to complain they'll complain about anything.., just to complain. The food is watery and bland, I didn't taste garlic the entire time I was there and I got garlic bread, which is weird. The ranch dressing is watery and bland...how? I am not picky at all but, I wouldn't return. They could clean the bathroom door and the light switches, it would go a long way when you are looking for positives. The waitress was great. read more

I've lived in Lynchburg for 13 years. I just tried this restaurant for the first time about a week ago. I had the shrimp francese. It was excellent!!! I was not impressed at all with this place. The only thing good was the Pepsi and the waitress was nice. The owner was walking around and he seemed like he didn't care. Then he leaves and it's just our waitress there. At 100 you expect to be packed for lunch but it was just me and my mom and grandmother. Their salads were not right as the salad was weird. We also got mozzarella sticks and you can tell they were obviously frozen. My mom and grandma ordered "baked" spaghetti and it was, in reality, cheese on top of spaghetti and that was it. I got the calzone and part of the cheese was cooked and the other wasn't. It was a big grease ball surrounded by burnt bread. Obviously someone needs to get Gordon Ramsay on the phone because this place is down the tubes! Horrible and we will not be back! 0 Stars not even 1. read more

My husband and and I were looking to try a different Italian restaurant and we are often in this area of Lynchburg so we decided to give this one a try. We were seated promptly and our server when she arrived was very friendly. I did have to ask if there were any specials. We both ordered a glass of wine and the glasses were very small. I would have expected a bit larger serving for the price. When our salads arrived, I saw I'd been given Italian dressing instead of the ranch I'd ordered. We both ordered the dinner special which was fra diavolo style which just means our choice of meat was prepared with a spicy tomato sauce. The garlic bread arrived but neither one of us tasted any garlic. Our entrees arrived promptly and looked good but rather small. The sauce was not as spicy as we would have liked but it was ok. The price for the special was a good value but again, I thought the portions were smaller than we are used to getting at other Italian restaurants in the area that we frequent. All in all, the service and atmosphere were good but what we ordered was only average. If we return, it would be to try their pizza which did look good. read more

I first went to Monte Carlo's in 1977 when they opened. I thought they had the best pizza I'd ever eaten and still do, even though once I left for college, I rarely went back to Lynchburg. We went there during Christmas vacation and still equally impressed. I just wish they'd open a restaurant in Warner Robins, GA!!! BEST PIZZA YOU CAN GET ... and yes, I mean including NYC. After being disappointed that Milano's did not have a Saturday buffet, we figured that we would try Monte Carlo's to compare. Wow.... We chose the buffet to check it out, so we had a well-rounded trial. Scratch this one off the bucket list. Another visit here, and it might be another bucket we will be worried about! The large chandelier was not on, so it might be best that near darkness engulfed us! Not one of the other hanging lights worked completely. If they had eight light bulbs, then they had three types of bulbs and at least one empty socket per light. Way to set the mood. The eggplant parm was edible, but almost as cold as the room. The pasta was nothing special, but the spicy sauce had seen its better days.... last week perhaps. The croutons on the salad bar were stale and nearly soggy, and much of the lettuce was limp and wilted. The pizza was good persay, but it had been there for a long time.... all of it. Here is the kicker. From our vantage point, we could see the salad bar, the kitchen door, and the front of the restaurant. When the man from the kitchen entered with a sauce pan, I thought that something fresh was on its way to the bar, so I tried to see what the fresh item was. Wrong.... He took sauce FROM the bar and took it back to the kitchen. Presto; a "fresh meal" appeared and was served to a man across the room to our right a few moments later. A few minutes later, two soup bowls were filled from the salad bar, taken to the kitchen, and then appeared on a serving tray moments later for a couple who entered after we did. Seriously, if this is the norm, then I would not expect to see the lights on in this restaurant for long. I will not be back. If you dare, take a seat that has a full view of the salad bar and order carefully! read more

We have been eating here for as long as I can remember ! We love their New York style pizza and I love their calzones ! The staff is very friendly and we are always greeted like family ! The sicilian pizza and spaghetti and meatballs are the very best in town in my opinion. It is very "roomy" and always so nice and clean. The employees are always so friendly. The only complaint i have AT ALL is it is always SO HOT in there that it makes for an uncomfortable dinner. The last time 2 times we went there we had to get "to go" boxes and take it home and eat so we could be comfortable. When I asked them about it, both times they said they had the air on. I have to disagree with the prior posts. My fiance and I decided to give this restaurant our "taste test" as we love to do as a couple! I am from a strong Italian family who migrated to NY. Of course, I was raised on the most luscious and savory Italian foods. Good Italian, is a rare find these days. We decided to order a small personal pizza as our appetizer. It was DELICIOUS!! The sauce and crust, was as close as you can get to my favorite NY pizza off of Broadway in NYC. PERFECT! (Way to go!!!) We both ordered a dinner dish. I got the chicken parm, which came with a BEAUTIFUL salad, Mixed dark greens, olives, tomatoes, cucumber and roasted red peppers. The Chicken was PERFECT, tender and juicy on the inside and perfectly crispy to perfection on the outside. Smothered in their signature Italian marinara with real mozzarella topping it off. My fiance ordered one of their signature pasta dishes on the back of the menu, with shrimp, mushrooms and a white sauce. Also cooked to perfection! The only thing, I wasn't too impressed with was the bread, it could have been a little fresher and the soup. The bread is beautiful, I suggest a different presentation of it and making sure its kept warm. Possibly traditional sliced style. The soup, was very watery and I'm not quite sure what it really was??? Overall, our bill was $33 for both of us - tip. Which was a great deal for all the food we ate and got to take home!! Monte Carlo is one of our all time favorites in Lynchburg! We go there regularly. The owners/family are incredible and they actually remember us each time we come to their restaurant. My husband and I stumbled upon this restaurant on one of our first dates back in 2008. We loved the food, the price, and the atmosphere so much we had our rehearsal dinner there for our wedding! We have even started a family tradition of celebrating my husband's birthday there, ordering their 28" pizzas. I love the fact that the restaurant is owned by a local family and has been in business since the 1970's. They really do focus on customer service. They have a variety of dishes to chose from, everyone will find something they like. I went to this place with extended family during the weekend for a late lunch around 3pm. I think there was one single guy eating there alone, but otherwise the restaurant seemed empty. The menu was a bit overwhelming with a lot of foreign words and so many different types of pasta and pasta combos. I ended up ordering the meat lasagna on recommendation from the waitress, and because I thought I had a better sense of what that would be (than many other items listed). I'm used to lasagna being a noodle "cake" with layers of pasta, meat, cheese, etc. When the lasagna came out, it seemed to be just about ONE layer and was extremely flat; it was also swimming in a tomato sauce that my husband called "soup." It was not like what I'd call lasagna I've eaten. I thought it was bland and had way too much cheese, making it heavy and salty. My husband ordered salmon, which he did not understand would come in tomato sauce. We both love salmon, but neither of us liked it (I tried a couple bites as well). The salmon felt soggy and dull with the sauce, and infused a gross fishy taste into the tomato sauce/pasta. Overall - not a great experience. It felt like a disappointing waste of money. read more

I find their salads to be not so great -- their Caesar dressing has so much mustard that I can't even eat it, and their tossed salad is just so-so, but they have great pizza and calzones. My Fiancee And I went here for something different. We ordered a pizza. We got our pizza. I took one bite and began to choke. Our waitress just walked away as I was choking and she knew I was choking. my fiancee was like omg shes choking, nope still walked away. She looked apathetic . The food was alright. I have had better pizzas for the price though. They wouldn't make one side of the pizza white for me. They said they can only make white pizza if i ordered a whole pizza. My fiancee doesn't care for white so I had to get a normal pizza. The only reason that bothers me is because places like pizza hut or even papa johns will split it in half for you. I would have paid more for it but they were adamant they couldn't do that for me. Idk I have worked in customer service for years. Even the food service. I know how to be helpful to others and my waitress just seemed like she was ready to get her day over with. I have been their before but i always smiled and left my problems at the door when I came in. Its the professional thing to do. in short we will not dine here again.
