gluten free pizza
Austin N.

Monte Carlo Pizza was a mixed bag. The Meat Lovers pizza was just okay, nothing special. Surprisingly, the gluten-free pizza was quite good for what it is! The place is a decent size with lots of tables, but we were the only ones there which made for a weirdly empty vibe. Staff was very friendly, which we appreciated. Dessert was a letdown. As a big cannoli fan, I have to say it was the worst I've had, and the tiramisu wasn't much better. Not a bad spot, especially for gluten-free pizza, but I'd skip dessert and probably wouldn't rush back.

If you're looking for authentic Italian food, especially Sicilian, this is the place to go in Lynchburg. It's nothing like chain "Italian" places. My absolute favorite dish is the shrimp portofino - the pasta is al dente, the garlic and mushrooms are perfectly savory with the shrimp. My husband loves the Bolognese, he alternates different pastas with it. The bread is amazing! If I weren't saving room for the pasta I could easily eat three plates of the fresh bread! They have Sicilian style pizza (the large square pies with thick crust), a whole Sicilian entree section, Italian pressed sandwiches, plenty of traditional Italian appetizers, and classic pasta dishes. I truly love the food here and it reminds me of my family. My husband has great memories here enjoying pizza with his high school friends. We will definitely keep coming back!

Eggplant Parmesan with spaghetti

Worst restaurant in Lynchburg. I don't think I've ever had food from a restaurant that I legitimately spat out on the first bite. I ordered "eggplant" Parmesan, which I still question today if it was actually eggplant. I even got my husband to try it because it may have been meat (he had no clue either). He ordered veal Parmesan himself, which he barely ate a few bites of. I ended up eating the spaghetti around it that was edible, though the "tomato sauce" used was most certainly Campbell's tomato soup. The bruschetta was okay; it had a good garlic taste but was pretty crispy. The breadsticks were rock hard and tough to bite with a corresponding "marinara sauce" that WAS actually tomato sauce. The complimentary bread that came with was probably what I ate most of because I was so darn hungry, but even that was very crispy on the edges and extremely chewy (but still edible). Honestly, I'm not that picky; this place just has a lot of work to do if they want to stay in business because I can guarantee they don't get repeat customers. I hope this helps someone not waste $50 on food they end up throwing out almost in its entirety like I did!

Great place to eat! Even my Grandfather, who is a super picky eater loves it here. My favorite is the Hawaiian pizza.

Margarita pizza was SO flavorful. The head chef stopped to tell us all that went into finding the PERFECT blend of flour for the crust. The pizza alone will bring us back. The bread and desserts are all house made and excellent. No shortcuts have been taken and you can taste it. The menu was a special graduation week menu. There was a lot of standard Italian restaurant fare, and brick oven pizzas. I ordered the brick oven lasagna, my daughter had the airline chicken and my wife ordered a salad. My lasagna came in a small iron skillet served on a serving board along with 2 grill toasted pieces of bread. It had plenty of meat and cheesy goodness, just like I like my lasagna! The airline chicken was char grilled with a lot of flavor. My daughter loved it, and I loved the bite I got to try. Overall, it was a very good Italian mea, great servicel at a very good price.

I had the eggplant parm dinner (which is how I personally gage every Italian restaurant I eat at), with a side salad with homemade ranch dressing. I love that it's not Ken's from a giant jar. Nothing beats house made. The eggplant parm was delicious, and the sauce had a nice flavor. I'm from a massive Italian town up north where you can throw a stone in any direction and hit an Italian restaurant or pizza joint, so I'm very particular. I also have a culinary degree, which makes me even pickier. I will absolutely be returning, and can't wait to try other items from the menu.

Unfortunately, the chicken Marsala was disappointing. The sauce was very thin and watery, with a large amount of liquid collecting in the bottom of the container instead of coating the pasta and chicken. The mushrooms had a texture and flavor that reminded me of canned mushrooms. While the dish lacked the consistency I typically expect from chicken Marsala, the sauce was still very rich in flavor and savory. Based on this experience, I'd recommend the pizza, but I would skip the Marsala. They gave an accurate estimate of wait time, prices were reasonable, and from what I saw the restaurant was clean. I would also like to acknowledge it was later in the night and they were going to be closing in the next hour, which might have caused a bit of a rush on the food, I'm not really sure.

I had a pizza before and wasn't the most impressed, but I was willing to give them another try. Craving a salad tonight I decided to order and I'm so glad I did! The large chef salad is huge and packed! Tons of meat and cheese, literally a whole hard-boiled egg, four slices of tomato, multiple slices of cucumbers, etc. There were also 2 large cups of ranch and the ranch was just as amazing! This quite possibly the best chef salad I've had in over 20 years. It really took me back! It's so big I can easily get 2 meals from it. I added a pic under the photos so be sure to check it out. The price was even quite affordable. The only thing I could possibly think would make this better was if they cooked their own bacon, but the bacon bits on the salad were all real and great quality. None of the cheap stuff or artificial bacon bits. I also ordered the cheese bread to have a little something extra with the salad. I was thinking it was going to be cheesy bread sticks maybe, or one of those oval shaped breads covered in cheese. This is actually much bigger and about the size of medium pizza. There is plenty of cheese on it and the olive oil and garlic really put this cheese bread on another level. The crust tastes like pizza crust and the flavor is incredible. I had a large cup of marinara and it is also really good. Everything was exceptional, including the temperature, time, and service. And it may sound odd but the utensils included were also great quality, very durable. I could easily cut up the veggies and meats without concern the utensils would snap. I will most certainly be regularly visting Vitales and ordering this same meal. It's so good I don't know how I could go and not get the same thing. I'm telling everyone I know. Run, don't walk and you can thank me later!

This visit didn't land there. **FOOD** The issues here weren't about complexity. They were about fundamentals. The chicken parmesan sandwich set the tone. Instead of a proper cutlet, it came out as heavily breaded chicken strips. That changes the entire structure of the dish. It eats more like a shortcut than a decision, and not a good one. The cannoli didn't help. The shells were fine, but the filling was clearly not made in-house. That's where it falls apart. Cannoli filling is simple, and when a place skips even that step, it raises questions about the rest of the kitchen. Pizza and the rest of the table followed the same pattern. Nothing outright inedible, just consistently underwhelming. No one at the table finished with anything worth talking about, and that usually tells the story better than anything else. This isn't about chasing authenticity. It's about doing the basics correctly and choosing not to cut corners. **SERVICE** Service was polite and steady. Orders were taken correctly, food came out in a reasonable time, and there were no issues with attentiveness. That said, the service felt like it matched the room. Functional, but a bit worn down. Nothing wrong, just not much energy behind it. **AMBIENCE** The space feels dated and a little tired. Lighting is on the darker side, and the overall environment gives the impression that it hasn't been refreshed in a while. It's not uncomfortable, just lacking any sense of upkeep or intention. **CLOSING** This is the kind of place that doesn't fail because it's trying something difficult. It falls short because it isn't executing the basics well. There's a foundation here that could work, but right now it feels like it's been left alone too long. When the small things slip, everything else follows. **RATINGS** Food: ** Service: *** Ambiance: *** Overall: ** Personal Disclaimer: I value small, independent restaurants and want them to succeed. So an $11.00 8" sub turns into a $14.00 8" sub alone. No doubt he is making a lot of money by doing this, unless there are regular customers who have become aware that he charges extra, and avoid adding these cheap toppings, that should automatically come with the sub. I've never been anywhere before where they charged a $1.00 for Iceberg Lettuce. The place also smells disgusting, with cheap vile chemical cleaners flowing up your nostrils as soon as you enter. No way could I ever eat there. I've read a few other reviews where customers have noticed that this same older man (owner) has overcharged customers before, by ringing up different prices versus the menu prices, with them vowing never to return, as it did not go unnoticed like he foolishly believes or most likely, does NOT care. The older man (owner) also charges a 3% fee for using a credit card, which is absolutely greedy as hell.
