When I asked the price for a men's haircut he literally snickered and hung up on me. I've been to a lot of great barber shops and not being able to provide at least a price range, plus being pushy and rude is a major red flag. Mr. Patrick (Pat) O'Connell has been running the Monteleone Hotel Barber Shop for as long as I can remember. In fact, I recall getting my 1st haircut here circa 1977. (Yeah, I know I'm no spring chicken anymore) So just like the hotel itself, Mr. Pat is somewhat of a landmark himself. As the sole barber/stylist, Mr. Pat runs a very cool and very organized/neat barber shop. If he's not cutting hair when you walk through the door, you'll find him quietly sitting in one of the 2 chairs enjoying the morning newspaper. But as soon as a customer walks in, he immediately and enthusiastically greets the patron and proceeds to inquire on what type of haircut or shave would they like. The shop, like Mr. Pat, is all about business. The décor is that of an "old school" barber shop and he is always dressed professionally. His tools of the trade and counter space are clean and meticulously organized. I have had several haircuts here and have always left completely satisfied. He, like most true barbers, offer a true hot lather shave, which I implore everyone to try at least once in their lives; as it is an experience you will not forget and most certainly will enjoy. This is another cash only business, so leave that AMEX at home. I was in dire need of a haircut and was excited to find an old school barber shop right next to my hotel. This guy has been here for more than 20 years, runs the shop himself and is a no bs kind of guy. I'd suggest calling to schedule an appointment or you can risk walking in and hope hes not busy. Once I got my trim many of my friends went to him over the next few days. He has the straight razor and will do the full shave and haircut for 50. If you're like me and still can't grow facial hair fast enough like a big boy to make this worth it, the haircut will cost you 20 bucks. This was exactly what I was looking for in New Orleans! Pat was kind, welcoming, and he gave me a haircut in 20 minutes. I thought his price was reasonable at $25, especially in the heart of downtown. I would give guests a heads up that if you are looking for parking, this will run you about $10/hr, but if you stop by Pat's place he'll have you out in a half hour. Haircut and straight edge razor shave makes for a perfect addition to any trip but give yourself time and plan ahead, give them a ring and make your appointment, this is a one man shop and well run, so relax and take your time. On our first day we got a haircut, it took about 30 minutes for a nice trim, and he cleaned up the neck and sideburns with the straight edge. On day three we went back for the shave, this was a spa moment, just relaxing and the music Pat has playing works with the whole experience, but I forgot to ask or shazam what it was. The shave took about 30 minutes a piece and I suggest every man to try the straight edge razor shave. Haircut was 20, straight edge was 30, and my face has never been this smooth. :) read more

This is a great barber shop with a great atmosphere. I came here looking for a no-nonsense haircut without the hype many other New Orleans barber shops (read: beauty salons for men) have. The original owner, Pat O'Connell, welcomed me to the shop and cut my hair himself. There are three chairs in the shop, but he was the only barber in that day. Pat has a great story to tell, and the history of the shop is equally fascinating. Since it was a slow afternoon, I stayed for an extra 20 minutes to chat after my haircut. Here is the vital information: - A normal haircut is $20 (includes shaving the nape of your neck and sideburns). - Cash and check only, no credit cards. - He does do REAL straight razor shaves unlike most other shops. Open until 5:00 weekdays and Saturday (not sure about Sunday). - Make an appointment. - No smoking. - Parking is on street, but you can find parking a couple blocks away around Dauphine Street. The meter rate is $1.50 per hour like other city meters. (The hotel garage is next door, but it's $13 for two hours!) read more

Before he begins, he carefully goes over exactly how you like it, and even examines your hair for thickness and contour. This was a welcomed departure from the usual chop and scissor. Once he begins, detail and patience is the name of the game for this guy. Unlike other places that buzz the sides as if they were shearing a sheep, Pat carefully and meticulously creates a perfect gradient from top to bottom. He asked me a couple times if the length was OK, just enough to be sure he was doing what I wanted, but was definitely not one of these clowns who expect you to tell them exactly what to do. The price--$20 for a basic cut--is very reasonable, especially considering that the shop is in the French Quarter. I'm not a cheapskate when it comes to haircuts, and I have no problem getting my haircut at a posh salon or whatever. However, I've been to a couple fancier places Uptown on Magazine street, and I'd say that Monteleone is of the same quality and a far, far better value.
