We hired Montell to replace a rotting wooden railing on our Trex deck and stairs with a new Trex railing. It made a huge difference and we're very pleased to have done it, although it was not cheap. I signed off on the job on a snowy day in the late fall. When Spring arrived and I spent more time outside I saw that some of the "scars" from the old railing were more obvious than I had realized and would need to be taken care of. As I pondered the idea of hiring someone to do it, and whom, I couldn't help but wonder if Montell should have done it. So I sent an email to Montell, with photos, asking if they considered this a finished job. I expected to have a polite conversation about it. Instead, the "owner" responded, indicating that I should have had it in the contract for them to do that. Rather than Montell, I was apparently expected to be the one thinking ahead and realizing there would be scars to be dealt with. He accused me of being "so wrong and demanding" but offered me $250 to cover the cost. I declined. I wasn't out to demand anything and was extremely put off by the attitude of his response and the exchange we had. Wow. I thought I was at a car dealership, listening to their high pressure sales technique. As soon as we sat, he said he was going to ask for our business. TWICE (he repeated it before the end of his sales spiel). I knew exactly where he was headed before he even started wading thru a page of lifestyle questions, what's most important to our decision, and reading the brochure. And it went on for 1.5 hrs. By the time he spit out the exorbitant price and their 12-14 week backlog, I had long since lost interest. I hate pushy salesmen, because I have never had a positive experience with companies that push me to decide before thinking about it. The ranting reply of the owner tells you what you're in for. A) my handle is an alias so business owners cannot harass me B) everything I said is true, even if the owner (who wasn't there to know) says it's not C) sales rep (MATT C.) admitted they're consistently several thousand higher than anyone else, and pushed us to sign that day D) most of my reviews are 4 or 5 stars, but only if you deserve it It may be that they do an excellent job, but I'll be moving on. Montell Construction overall did an exceptional job on our pool deck. Brett in sales was a little pushy when he came out to measure and give estimates. I believe they are overpriced but understanding that prices are high now with the current inflation. The Deck Forman Bud, in charge of the construction of the deck, did an amazing job and came back to replace boards that were cracked. I would say if it wasn't for him I wouldn't recommend Montell, but he made everything right with our particular project. read more

We hired Montell to build us a new deck for our backyard. They were excellent to work with from the original consultation down to the crew that completed the project. They were able to coordinate their efforts with the house painters so that the old deck was removed and the painters could paint the back of the house while the deck was off. Andrew Clock was the onsite project manager and delivered an amazing final product with meticulous attention to detail. They went to the extent of moving a birds nest from the old deck and transferring it to a bird house that they had secured to a post near the same location (and yes, the birds survived the transition). We had Dan come to our house to get an estimate for replacing a patio door. We have french doors that lead to our deck. We have had a leak in it for a while and finally got around to getting some quotes to fix. We scheduled 5 different places to come out for a quote. The first 4 all said we needed a new door and wanted us to buy a new slider for between $3k-$3500. Dan was the 5th to come out to look. We were expecting the same news. He looked everything over and asked if he could tell us the truth. He told us our door was fine and showed us exactly how the water was getting in. He said our door was fine and that the problem is our gutter. The damage on the inside is mostly cosmetic and could be fixed easily. He pointed us in the direction of some people they use for interior work. Super nice and super honest. We really appreciated having him to our house and being straight with us. Very disappointed. Montell's advertisement promotes local-family-no pressure. But they won't even come to my home to give me a quote unless my wife is present. My wife doesn't want to meet with salespeople----she wants me to do it and then recommend a contractor for us to use. No Pressure? They want the spouse to be there so they can pressure a close on the spot. They are afraid they won't get an immediate sale and will have to come back or answer questions later. Anyone in sales understands WHY they want to put that pressure on. Anyone in a Local Family Business that promotes itself as No Pressure would have come to my home and given me a quote and relied on their professionalism to get the sale. I've been in my home 30+ years. We aren't exactly fly-by-night prospects. Stop promoting yourselves as different. You're just another sleazy roofing company. read more

From my first phone call all the way to the completion walkthrough, my experience with Montell was easy, professional, and exceeded my expectations. We had a goal of taking down our old deck and replacing it with a composite deck with stairs splitting off towards the bottom, one way going to an area for our dogs, and one way through a self closing gate to an area of our back yard where a pool is about to go in. We had a date set for when construction was starting on our pool before we even contacted Montell and I wasn't sure they'd be able to complete the deck in time for the pool. Chad, one of the owners, assured us that they could get this done for us and he got the ball rolling for us. We told him our idea and he came up with a rough sketch and helped us decide on materials that were in our budget. When it was time for construction to begin at our house, Kel and Kyle showed up early in the morning and quickly got to work taking down the old deck. They worked SO well together and you could tell that they had great communication between the two of them. That soon made sense when we found out that they are twins! They worked so hard and worked meticulously paying close attention to detail. Every night when they left, they cleaned up their area and made sure to touch base with us to let us know the progress and what could be expected the following day. They ended up finishing the project sooner than we expected and we could not be more pleased with their work. We are very much looking forward to enjoying this deck and our new back yard for years and years to come, all thanks to Kel and Kyle, and the whole Montell Construction crew. We always try to support small locally owned family businesses which is what made us reach out to them in the first place and they did not disappoint! First let me start by saying that my wife and I are incredibly picky people, and demand perfection when it comes to investing money in our house and yard with a contractor. With that being said, we recently had Montell Construction install a stamped concrete patio in our back yard, and a concrete pad under our deck. I don't usually post reviews of companies, but these guys knocked it out of the park! The phrase "Under promise, over deliver" isn't worthy of our experience with Montell. To start, Chad (one of the owners) personally walked us through everything. I mean he was completely transparent with the quote, didn't pull punches on expectations, advised us on the design and color, and when he found out that we are expecting a baby in June, he moved us up on their schedule almost two months without ever being asked to. Once the project began, Ryan (Project Manager) and his crew were incredibly professional, respected our property, and worked fast without sacrificing quality. They were done in 2 days, when we expected the job to take as long as a week. When the job was done, Ryan walked me around the work and I was amazed at the detail that they put into things, and could tell that they hold themselves to a higher standard than even my wife and I could have. Again, I don't usually post reviews, but we couldn't have been more impressed with these guys, and would recommend them to anyone looking for a great honest contractor. We have hired Montell Construction for several projects around our house (new roof, new windows, installation of attic fan and vents along with removal of inside fan, repair of new roof when a large tree limb fell on it). They have been nothing but great to work with. They are very professional, personable people from the top on down which makes them very easy and pleasurable to talk to. As a home owner it is hard to sometimes put your trust in a company to ensure that you are receiving top notch work for the dollar paid. With Montell Construction, I believe we received high quality work at a very fair price. This is probably one of the worst contractors I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with. I contacted this company to build a small deck. When the "sales person" came out he seemed pleasant enough, until he realized that I saw through his pricing scheme. I watched this man calculate the cost of my deck in front of me. When he came up with the final figure he frowned. The final figure was approximately $4000.00. Then, he started erasing numbers and recalculating phantom figures. I knew that he was pulling numbers out of his ass because I do calculations for projects all day at work. There are equations that you use that don't change and they are so straight forward. When he finished calculating and re-calculating his phantom numbers, he finally looked pleased with himself. His calculator showed a figure closer to $10,000.00. I saw that figure and told the salesman that there was no way I was paying that much money for a 12' x 6' pressure treated wood deck. The salesman got an attitude and told me that wasn't the final cost of the deck. They were going to take 20% off of that price because they were having a special. I had already had other contractors come out to give estimates on the project, so when he told me $10,000 I knew that he told me a price that was absolutely ridiculous so that he could make me think that 20% off of that price was a great deal. When I told him that I was getting estimates from others, he became highly agitated. He demanded to know why I bothered calling Montell Construction. Well, hello? That's what you do when you are considering a large project, you get estimates from several contractors. He then told me that other companies don't use Southern Yellow Pine, as if it's some rare exotic wood like Ipe. I finally told the salesperson that I would have to compare all of the estimates and make a decision. Then it happened, he took out his business card and threw it across the table at me. He didn't hand it to me like most professionals would do, he THREW it at me. I could not believe what I had just experienced. I kept my composure and called his company IMMEDIATELY after he left to complain about him. Their response, "Well we can understand our salesman's frustration when they go out to give an estimate and don't complete the sale right then." I was flabbergasted. Now here's the kicker. One of the owners didn't like the fact that I questioned their tactics and told me straight out that they hope I find someone to complete my project but it wouldn't be them. I already knew that because there is no way I would have hired them at that point. A bit over a month later Montell Construction's salesperson called me "on behalf of the owners". I was very surprised, but still polite. They didn't call to apologize about their previous behavior, but to find out if I really hired someone to complete my project because they figured I didn't go through with the project because I couldn't afford it. The guy was laughing under his breath during the phone call. Well, yes, I did hire someone else to complete the project.........for $4,600.00. I hired Lowe's, and I suggest that the rest of you do the same. read more

I called Montell to set up an estimate to have a new deck installed on my house. After being asked if I was married, and responding yes, I was told that I needed to select a time when both me and my wife would be home in order to have an estimate done. When I told the person on the other end of the line (Amy) that having my wife and I home at the same time for an estimate wasn't really feasible, I was told that it was important that we were both home. Considering I, and I alone am making the decisions on this project--a fact which I told the individual from Montell--I reiterated the fact that my wife's presence wasn't really necessary. Again, the person with whom I was speaking argued the contrary. At that time I told them that I would simply be going with one of the other contractors from whom I have already received a quote (and non of whom had any problem with my wife not being present). It shouldn't be that big of hassle to schedule an estimate, and I wasn't willing to risk the rest of the project becoming a similar hassle. read more

I can't comment on their quality but I sure can on their price, approach, and professionalism. Price; Montell was DOUBLE the price, over $21,0000. (I do not know the exact number as they didn't leave the quote ) They would offer you a slight discount only if you signed that night. The closest quote from other roofers was just under$ 11,000. The other quotes were by local established roofers in the area. Approach; They will only meet with you as a couple because their objective is to have you sign at the end of the hour+ appointment. They're goal is not to give you a quote, it is to have you sign that very day on the spot. Here is were things got really interesting. My brother in law was stopping over 1 hour after the Montell sales guys appointment to look at some other internal construction we are considering. He overheard the salesman telling us about a 30 year warranty on the shingles. My brother-in- law politely interjected into the conversation that shingle warranties are pro-rated. (their value drops over the 30 year period). From our opinion it was no big deal and he went on with his presentation. When he was done we told him we were just looking for quotes at this time. (that was our intention from the beginning) He said he understood, we shook hands, and he left, no big deal, so we thought... I received a phone call the next day from one of the three owners. He accused me of intentionally having a third party present and sabotaging the sales pitch. He wanted to know what our angle was and didn't appreciate my brother- in-law interrupting and said at this point he wouldn't shingle our roof even if we wanted them to. AFTER going off on me he then says there are always two sides to a story and wanted to here my side, so I told him. He really didn't care and never apologized for being rude. As I stated earlier I can't comment regarding their quality but I can say our personal experience is sume up in three words, rude, unprofessional, and expensive! Last thing I want to say this rating does not reflect the young man that gave the sales pitch , he was very professional and polite. I believe he could do better with his employment. read more

Not sure if this is standard, but the estimate was double what two other companies quoted us...I can't vouch for their quality of work, but their sales techniques seem shady to say the least. I am so pleased with the work done by Montell Construction at my house. I had a big project -- roof, deck and siding all needed replacement. They met with me initially and were so helpful walking me through the decision making process. So many colors and styles to pick from! As with any project of this magnitude, there were some hiccups (mother nature always plays her hand here). The project manager was quick to return my phone calls/emails if I had concerns that needed to be addressed. They provided a 5-year warranty and six months later when I had an issue with the gutters, they were back at my house within a couple days after my call to address some nail pops. Then, about a year later, some trim on my porch was battered by my snow shovel and when I called to see what they could do, they came back and got it back in tip top shape. Horrible company! They just finished our 2 week project today that started on Aug 24th (do the math, that's 4 weeks not 2)! Our crew took 6 days off for Labor Day which was right in the middle of the job! The owner is a real jerk, doesn't care about customer satisfaction at all! Project manager came for our final walk through tonight and as we pointed out things we didn't like he said that's how it has to be even though it looks terrible! I'm very happy with 95% of the work but the other 5% looks terrible and they won't do anything about it. They claim to have done about $500 worth of extra work that we didn't pay for so we should be more grateful. That was their choice to do that not ours! Very horrible experience! read more

The service provided by Montell was appalling. Upon signing our initial contract, we were given an estimated start date of 6-8 weeks, but probably sooner as our situation was considered "urgent". (Our roof was leaking into the room below.) No work began until the 12th week and the communication surrounding this was lacking. After the initial sales meeting, we later found out that we were not adequately presented with all of the product options available to us. It took weeks to even get a larger sample size of the product that was promised at our initial sales meeting. When workers finally showed up, they had different materials than outlined in our contract. Trying to discuss any issues with this company is beyond frustrating. We received rude responses, no apologies and the work that was done is unsatisfactory. The Duradek edge looked like it was cut by a child. Since it was already glued down, it could not be fixed so they painted to minimize the unsightliness of it. Sloppy if you ask me. A worker also stepped through the roof, causing 2 boards in our cedar ceiling below to break. They nailed it back up and offered us a few hundred dollars to account for it. At our final walkthrough, they fought with us over whether or not it was discussed to be $200 or $300 and also tried to argue that it could have been like that before they did the work. After all of the problems we had with them, I was astounded that they would try to haggle us for $100. In the end, they just wanted to take their check and never see us again.
