We particularly enjoyed the duck breast (Eendenborstfilet) and beef slices (Dun gesneden biefstuk). The fish was fresh enough but very thin. We paid extra to get the sashimi portions and well worth it. I think we tried almost very dish on the menu with the group of people we had. You have to remember that if you don't finish what you order, you have to pay 2€ additional per dish. There's basically 5 rounds including a dessert round, so it's really not all you can eat but it's enough rounds, I was done in 3 rounds. The atmosphere was nice and clean all around. The decor was quite unique, I didn't have my phone with me to take pictures but it really didn't have an Asian vibe. The restrooms were clean which was always a plus at a restaurant. Now a comment on the service, maybe it was busy or the waiters/waitresses are new but they lacked a bit in coordinating. We didn't know what was coming or going. We didn't get everything we asked for in each round. Also we got our drinks charged twice on the bill, so review it before you pay. The nice surprise was that since it was Father's Day, the owner went around giving a chopstick set to the Father's.

The first night I had the lontong surakarta - cubes of sticky rice, chicken in a sweet-spicy sauce, vegetables, with toasted coconut and peanuts to sprinkle over it. There was far more food than I could eat, and 14 euro wasn't unreasonable. The second night, I went with a group, and we got the rijsttafel (not sure if it was the 12 or 18-dish version). There was a lot of food - we didn't come close to eating it all - and a good variety of dishes (even the vegetarians got plenty to eat), but I actually liked the lontong surakarta much better. The spekkoek was pretty good, though. The atmosphere isn't great. Tables are packed very close together (such that you often get bumped by a server or someone at another table), and it gets very noisy at dinnertime, since it seems to be a popular restaurant. I ate there the first night around 6pm, and it wasn't a problem finding a table that early. It did seem unusual that I was sitting by myself, though.

Two people can easily split one of the chicken dishes since they come with 3 sides as well. I recommend the Ayam Opor Surakarata - super tender pieces of chicken cooked in coconut milk. The vegetables on the side are eggplant, tofu with green beans, and cucumbers. Service was good and we've always been able to walk in without reservations.

And luckily for me, the closest place I found was the comfort and familiarity of food from the homeland. The atmosphere reminds me so much of modern wartegs that are kinda booming in Jakarta right now. The concept is very budget friendly and common in Indonesia. For a set price that's under 10 euros, you get your choice of carbs (typically rice), proteins, and vegetables. There are so many options to choose from behind the glass display and everything is worth the try. I got myself some yellow rice, sambal eggs, rendang, and stir-fried buncis vegetable. Very authentic taste, nothing else States-side can even compare. I guess it's really something when you can enjoy comfort food of your real homeland while people-watching from inside in the middle of pouring rain while you're away from your home away from home. And you know it's that good of a food when you landed back in New York and the first thing you missed about Leiden was their cooking
