We arrived late and very hungry after 14 hours driving from Ft. Lauderdale! They welcomed us in even though they were closing soon. Our server insisted we take our time and we relaxed over margaritas with chips and queso.. The Queso had a great flavor. The margaritas were perfect and very tasty. We split the chicken and beef fajitas. The steak was super tender and seasoned. We had corn tortillas by request and they were lightly fried and soft. This is your typical Mexican restaurant, Fast paced, lots of customers in and out. Service was friendly. Chips and Salsa, to me, make or break a restaurant. At least that's the case in my dining experiences. Here I did NOT enjoy theirs. The Salsa was chunky and bit on spicy side. The chips were too thick - not thin and crispy. I asked for "mild" salsa and was given a bowl of heated Ranchero Sauce. Cheese dip (queso) was perfect! I ordered steak nachos with no veggies. When brought to my table it was wrong so I had to wait a little longer for my food. However, once I tasted my dish I was very pleased! Steak was pleasantly seasoned and cheese was perfect. I would come back again for this dish for certain! I just wish they would improve the chips and Salsa. Footnote - to the "yelper" who did a review on takeout...you cannot judge a restaurant all on the takeout experience. (1) The food is NEVER as good as eating in person, freshly cooked. First off I'm not one to write reviews but wow they deserved it. The food gave all my friends the mud butts ate only about 4 scoops and started feeling it also food tasted like nothing all dry and bland. Had a great meal here. Chips and salsa were good. Cheese dip was the typical Tex-mex white dip. Our server said she has worked there for almost 20 years, so she was great. Everything was tasty and came out very promptly and hot. Margaritas were good. Not too strong or sour. Chile relleno was more of a dip, but that is a must. I was disappointed with my meal here. My husband was happy with his chicken, cheese, and rice bowl that had onions and peppers tossed in as well, but I was less than excited about my shrimp chimichangas. They were listed as being a tortilla filled with shrimp, beans, and cheese then deep fried to a crispy, golden brown. When I got the dish, the tortillas were soggy, there were no beans on the inside, and there were onions, peppers, and tomatoes incorporated (none of which I like). The refried beans that came on the side looked like they had been sitting on the plate for a good period of time and the rice wasn't fresh either. I'm a sucker for good Mexican food but I didn't find it at this place. Maybe it was a bad day or a bad choice of food on my part. The salsa, chips, and queso were fine, so we'll probably end up stopping by again because my husband liked his meal. Perhaps I'll just explore the menu again for a chance at a better experience. read more

Best Margaritas in Knoxville. The food is always fresh and very traditional. This is not your usual chain type Mexican. Prices are incredible! I love their TexMex Guacamole with big chunks of avocado and cilantro. The poblano peppers are great. Any dish is tasty but I love the fajita nachos and any of their corn tortillas! This pace is great! It's west coast Mexican food, fast cheap and tasty! We were staying at the hotel next door and ate several meals here. $5 lunch special huevos rancheros was HUGE and tasty. The Chile's pablanos were my favorite. I've never had a relleno done this way, and it was a cool take. Chili rellenos are my go-to and these were done baked skillet style in cheese, more like a dip. They were great! Normally they are steamed, stuffed, egg battered and fried but if they aren't fresh they're terrible. They deconstructed them a bit to cut down on the laborious nature of them, and it's not bad at all. This is some of the most comforting casual west coast style Mexican food I've had in a while, and it was greatly appreciated. Highly recommend. read more

Seared and spiced perfectly, and came with a spicy tomatillo sauce on the side that really kicked. My girlfriend had the chili Colorado, which was a chunked beef in ranchero sauce. She loved it! There are some very, very good points about this restaurant! The salsa is good! Many Mexican restaurants use what tastes like only tomatoes and cilantro for their salsa, but these guys put more into it for sure! The chips are good too-I personally prefer thinner chips but many people like thicker tortilla chips. When my meal came out, it was hot and looked delicious, but my refried beans were scorched. The rice was good and so was my pablano pepper with cheese. I love their tomatillo salsa! You need to try that @ your next visit if you love spicy things. Overall, I enjoy coming here. The atmosphere is lively and the waiters and attentive and have good personalities. I also came very late at night which may have been why the beans were scorched. Whenever I'm in North Knoxville I try to arrange my schedule so that I'm near Monterrey when lunch rolls around, and I've driven past several other 'Mexican' restaurants on Emory Road in order to enjoy the dinner menu at this location just south on I-75 on Merchant Road. I've never encountered poor/slow service, even during the lunch or dinner 'rush' timeframes, which tells me the wait-staff is adequate and trained, and the kitchen is staffed to manage customer flow during these busy times. There is an incredible level of culinary diversity in Mexico, and after spending six months on a project in down there, 'Authentic' is a term I can't use toward any Mexican restaurant, unless it presents itself as an eatery featuring food prepared in the style of a particular region of that country. Monterrey is characterless in that respect. It does feature foods that have a 'Mexican Character' - yet doesn't offer a signature item from any particular region. I think of Monterrey as a diner featuring 'Mexican' foods. Good food, served quickly, and at a reasonable cost is a characteristic of a good diner. Park around back, there's more room, and it's well-lighted. Monterrey fits the bill quite nicely! It won't be memorable, but it won't make you sick. read more

This place can be really good, can being the key word. The food varies greatly. One time it is super fresh and the next time it can be yesterdays stuff that has been poorly microwaved. The rice and beans are always sub par. The rice has no flavor and is usually dry/hard. The beans usually have a crust on them and just are not very good. Even if the food is at its best it is still the standard Guadalajaran type mexican food served here in the south, which I happen to like. Even when the food is at its best this place would still only garner 3 stars because of the service. The service can also vary but it at its best it is still not good. Some servers are acceptably attentive while others really need a reminder of how to keep a drink full and be remotely curtious to customers. Lastly, they used to have an all you can eat option which made up for the bad food because you could order something else, they really need to bring that back for me to visit more regularly. So overall, as much as I want to like this place they fall short of expectations and I hope they see this review because their issues could be easily rectified. read more

First off, go getchu some queso! It's awesome! Second, if you like heat get the guacamole texano! It's my favorite thing and this is the only place to get it in Knoxville. It is made of fresh cut avocado with pico de gallo, lime juice and jalapeños! Hell yes. Get your margarita, or wine if your fancy and get to ordering! My personal Favorite is the Diablo shrimp fajitas. Delicious spicy shrimp with hot pepper. If you can't stand the heat , you don't have to get out of the kitchen ( dad joke). But you can order a delicious burrito, enchilada, or tacos of your preference. The meals are delicious and at great price, so there is no reason for you not to get some ! read more
