Brentwood, you've gotta start reviewing your parks! It's crazy that a park like Grassland has so…read morelittle written about it. While this time of year may not be the best time to check it out, mid-spring offers a fantastic glimpse into what the park has to offer. Start planning now. Let's start with one of the most unique features I've seen in a Nashville-area park: a sensory garden. For that reason alone, I'm a fan of Grassland. The designers created a garden with plants selected to engage different, specific senses. The motif is Japanese but the result isn't tied to particular region. Truly, in each grouping, you're invited to smell, touch, etc. the particular plants and experience them in ways in which you don't do ordinarily. Once you've spent some time in the garden, look up: the park is huge. Take the time to take the trails, walk over the hobbit bridges and see what the space has to offer. It's tied to a school, so a playground is no surprise to be on grounds. The park boasts a jungle gym contraption as well as old-school swings. For the bigger kids (parents, you're included), there's also tennis courts, basketball courts and a baseball diamond (with batting cage). While the park is relatively flat, you're going to want to bring tennis shoes. You're not going to hike but if you explore the full tilt of the grounds, you're not going to be on paved ground. It's grass & dirt. You might get muddy. With so much (potentially) going on at the park, I'd advise coming on a Sunday. Since a school is on property, weekdays are likely to be packed. Saturdays will find families trying to make up for not coming during the week. Sundays, however, are quieter. And despite the size of the park, this is one to be experienced in relative quiet... without the hustle and bustle of overactive families. Parking's plentiful and very easy. From the photo on Yelp, I didn't expect Grassland to be as pretty as it is. It's a well-maintained and interesting green space. It's worth the drive from Nashville to visit. Just be sure to come on Sunday and to spend some quality time in the sensory garden.

The park itself is only about thirty acres, but it's the gateway to the 80+ acres of the Whites Creek Greenway. Joseph Brown Mullins was a self made, successful African American land developer in the area in the 1920s and 1920s. The greenway itself borders a fine line between "lush and undeveloped" and "messy and unmaintained", so it really will depend on if you're a glass half-full, or glass half-empty kind of person. There are two loops, and one one-way path across the way to Hartman Park, and it isn't marked or anything, so check a map before you come and have a plan.

Greenways are too large to try to take on the way that you would a park. I think I would have enjoyed Mullins Park more had I known where I was going and what I was doing. As it was, I sort of felt dropped in to the middle of a greenway with a lot of overgrown vegetation. Truth be told, the overgrowth reminded me of Children of the Corn and it sort of creeped me out. Despite there being a paved path that goes the length of the greenway, the isolation of the park, the lack of people taking advantage of the park (although it backs up to a neighborhood) and the 'wrong turn' vibes I got while exploring on my own, I didn't want to spend much more than I had to and I got the heck out of dodge. Again, I think a contained, defined park system would make more sense. From what I could gather -- and what I experienced -- the park is the lip of the greenway and it's just too large to take on in an afternoon. You should know where you're going and what you're doing which takes away some of the point of checking out a park. All the above said, I wouldn't label this as a destination park. I would imagine that locals have a better sense of what's going on and where to go than I did. A couple of closing thoughts: 1.) I enjoyed seeing a large amount of butterflies doing their thing. Seeing them made me realize I never see (or, pay attention to) butterflies out and about. 2.) I don't spend a lot of time in Bordeaux and I should explore it more. It's deceptively close to Downtown but feels a world away. It offers a suburban feel with city access. I wonder if the realtors have realized this...
