Breaded Fish & Chips - Haddock: Maybe even better than the battered fish. The panko on top of the batter gives it a nice hearty crunch. Perhaps not traditional, but I'm a fan. Fish Cakes: The two crispy cakes are a much smaller portion than the regular fish. However, they definitely bursting with more flavor from the smoked fish and all the nice herbs. Could work if you split this and a regular fish & chips with someone. Curry Sauce: Took a few reminders to my waitress, but finally got my side sauce. A good helping. Kinda closer to Japanese curry than an Indian curry. Dipping the fries in this is purely amazing, much nicer than malt vinegar. Eton Mess: Save room for dessert! The pairing of smooth Scottish ice cream against crunchy airy meringue is perfect. Plus the raspberry sauce and whipped cream. A great way to end the meal on a sweet note.

The Lemon & Herb Baked Fish was so flavorful and juicy. I tried a Deep Fried Mars Bar for the first time and loved it (I don't know what it reminds me of, but it's crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside, and hot enough to burn the top of your mouth). The star was definitely the Breaded Haddock. I've had fish and chips around the UK for much cheaper, but at a slightly higher price point you get a perfectly crispy piece of fish with double-fried chips. It's really more about the experience of being in a posh fish shop. It's packed with tourists, so you'll be handed a map of the city at the end -- which I found to be pretty funny given I was living in Edinburgh at the time and came with another local. The chips were fine but no flavor so I needed to add salt. The plus was the vegan tartar, which tasted quite good. And of course, I added vinegar. But I was bummed that the ketchup and mayo was in little Heinz packets instead of bottles. This is so unnecessarily wasteful and also kind of a pain to constantly be opening and squeezing them. Honestly at night it looks a bit of a dive bar from the outside, so Brittany A. and I weren't sure what to expect going in for dinner our second night in town. Compass is physically divided into a bar at the entrance that can seat about 30 people, and a traditional looking restaurant located half a story up in the building that is good for groups. Both the bar and restaurant sections are served by staff, so you won't have to worry about ordering at a till. The interior looks like it was recently renovated. Original plaster details on the bar ceiling accent the warm wood and rock walls. A large hearth offers a visually intriguing focal point. The restaurant is decorated with large French posters and features a wood plank ceiling. A clear line of sight into the kitchen lets you watch your order creation. Our first visit was for dinner around 9PM in the restaurant section. Food is served for twelve hours, 10AM - 10PM daily. Compass has a good number of vegetarian options on the menu. I opted for their vegetarian club, a giant sandwich stuffed to the gills with hummus and halloumi, served with a side of chips. It's an incredible entree that requires a big appetite. I tried one of the Innis & Gunn beers on tap in addition to their complementary tap water infused with cucumber and mint. The dinner service was prompt and professional, and our entrees were out in a jiffy. We enjoyed the food so much we came back on our final day in Edinburgh for an 11AM brunch. We tend to take our dog with us on our travels, and Compass allows pooches in the bar area. The bar is very relaxed with some comfortable window booth seating and free WIFI. This is the kind of place you can get some real work done. I tried their small vegetarian breakfast, a full plate with vegetarian haggis, sausage, hash brown, beans, mushrooms, toast and more. For a small portion I once again was left completely full. It was honestly one of the best veggie breakfasts I've tried in the UK. We stayed for a bit, enjoying the music and several excellent espresso drinks. The staff are delightful and we were shown to our table. This place is not big - about 8 tables - and they don't have printed menus as this changes daily. Instead they ask you to look at the chalkboard mounted on the wall. The Walnut offers a range of starters and mains, all are very reasonably priced, I go for the chicken liver parfait and David decides to throw a curve ball and orders the cheese board to start :-/. For main, the roasted cod for me and the lamb hotpot for David. As I said our waitress is great, she is adorable and very attentive. Before I know it I'm devouring my parfait. It is delicious made even better by the homemade oatcakes, I only got two though. More, more, more please! Our mains were equally as delicious. My fish was perfectly cooked.
