Near the university, Mums is definitely a college hang-out joint. The haggis starter was pretty good, though had too much of the neeps. The gravy was smooth and flavorful. The steak and ale pie was pretty good, with a robust crust and a decent amount of steak filling. The chips and peas were afterthoughts. Service was a little slow but I wasn't in a major rush. Cute spot for an affordable casual meal.
This was place was wonderful! The service was great. They had house beer that was tasty. I had one vegetarian and one meat sausage and they were both so soo good. There were so many flavors of mash to choose from! I got cheese and onion. Thicker then I usually like my mash but still so good on a cold rainy uk day.
3.5 stars My cousin ordered for me as I was slow moving that morning. Service was very good, a bit hard getting the bill at the end. The English muffin under my scrambled eggs was a bit less crispy and a bit gummier than I am used to.
Delicious food. Very friendly service. Adequate Number of Vegan options. Plant based shepherds pie was delicious. Fish and chips were the best so far on this trip. All in all we really enjoyed the experience.
I was here for a food tour and we specifically had haggis, and it's was very good haggis! Loved the flavors. Such a good way to get into something so many people have apprehensions about, but meanwhile it's so damn delicious! Would come back to try more Scottish classics too!
We arrived at 12 pm. We were asked 3 times if anyone took our order. All 3x we said no. Not yet. They finally took our order at 12:25 pm. My husband said he wasn't going to order yet, but may order desert later. We were told we should order everything now because they are busy and may not be able to get food later. At 1:04 pm my food arrived. The Mac and Cheese was plated nicely. But had no flavor and was dry. The coleslaw was Goss! It tasted like tartar sauce with shredded cabbage. This was the worst food I have had in Edinburgh! Tourist trap!
I deeply appreciate that they offer vegan haggis and vegan shepherd's pie. Both were good, and the place gives you what it promises--everything is comfort food.
After a chilly morning run in the city, I came by Mums for some heartwarming comfort food and it was just that. Nothing strikes homemade as much as some traditional, hearty British food in a retro-styled diner. I waited about 5 minutes until being seated on a Sunday afternoon. While there were many choices, I opted for the Steak and Ale Pie (£9.75 for regular). The pie was served in a rectangular ceramic bowl filled with tender chunks of beef with carrots, onions, mushrooms & turnip simmered in rich gravy with ale. The fillings were so rich and flavorful that I even threw in my carrots and peas on the side for some extra seasoning. My favorite was the puff pastry top that was so flaky and delicious to dip with. You also get a side of fries, which was honestly a bit disappointing though. With that said, I may switch up the sides for mash instead. The wait for my food did take almost half an hour, which was pretty long. They had also seemed to have forgotten my glass of water, but was super helpful once I reminded them. If you're looking for some good ol' homecooked British food that will warm you up on a cold day, this will do it. I absolutely loved the steak and ale pie, although the fries and veggies could definitely use an upgrade.

We've been eating a lot of these two dishes in the last 10 days in London and Inverness/Edinburgh and Mums is better than average. The server was super friend so kudos to her. Looking back I think the sausages and pies would have been a much better option as that seems to be more of their specialty.
On a cold day in Edinburgh, nothing sounds much better than some warm comfort food. I stopped in around 1:30pm and was immediately greeted and shown to a table. I went with two of the sausage-of-the-day selections (pork and leek, beef with onions and garlic) and the cheese and onion mash. For the gravy, I asked for a recommendation between the traditional brown and the caramelized onion - without hesitation, the server recommended the caramelized onion. "Every time," she said. So, I went with that. Everything was outstanding - the flavors in the sausages and mash were so good that I hardly needed the gravy (though it was delicious, too). Service could not have been friendlier. If you're looking for some traditional British fare, this is a great place to stop.
I was so excited to try this place after seeing good reviews but our experience was terrible. There were gnats everywhere that we were killing at our dusty booth. When our food arrived we finally asked to move spots but the back of the restaurant was just as bad. I can't believe other families weren't complaining. We also found a hair in our appetizer and the mains were subpar. My husband complained about his fries and burger and the manager was combative. They comped us for one whiskey and we left as quickly as possible. The shepherds pie was very salty and the side of veggies was very clearly from frozen. read more

I don't really have anything nice to say about this place. The only reason it's not getting a 1 star review is that the person helping us in the end was nice and they give you candy with the check. I love black licorice. Walking in, we started to have a seat and the person working yelled at us to go to the back. Ok, if you want us to wait to be seated, just say so, it's pretty easy. There were two large groups behind us and I think he lumped us in with them because when I tried to sit he started freaking out that we were taking a 2 top. I screamed that I wasn't with the group and he was like I know and looked at me like I was an idiot. I wanted to leave but I decided to stick it out because of all the great reviews and because we were hungry and walked to this place purposefully (because of said reviews). The server comes up and asks if we want breakfast or lunch since it's so close to 12 when they stop serving breakfast. We say breakfast and he walks away. The other tables say lunch and he makes then wait until 1215 to order (lunch started at 12). He comes back to us around 1155 and is angry we haven't ordered yet, which I can't see how it's my fault since he's taking the orders. Points at the menu and asks if we knew how to read. I'm about the lose it but again, I don't like to embarrass my mans so I tried to stay calm. My meal comes and it's meh. The toast is burnt on one side. The egg has runny whites. The sausage is sickly sweet. The beans taste like they're from a can. The mushrooms are clearly old. The tomatoes are cold. The black pudding and the bacon are ok. My fiancé's pancakes are stodgy and undercooked. I regret 100% eating here. There are details I won't share but a few hours later the porcelain gods got to eat my meal in extreme liquid form. I was sick for at least an hour, on and off the toilet, once almost not making the toilet. My man said he's never seen my face so terrified in the whole time we've known each other. This was place was wonderful! The service was great. They had house beer that was tasty. I had one vegetarian and one meat sausage and they were both so soo good. My favorite soup place next door was closed on a recent Sunday but, lucky for me, Mums was open! Conveniently located near the university, I walked inside by myself and was greeted immediately by a smiling, charismatic server who welcomed me in without making me feel awkward for dining alone. I was seated at a table near the front and ordered a cappuccino while I looked over all the yummy-sounding comfort food items described on the menu. I thought it would be difficult to make up my mind until my eyes fell upon "Fish Pie." Fish Pie is not really a thing in the United States like it is in Ireland and the UK. Fish Pie was one of my daughter's favorite dishes when she was a student in Dublin. So, yes, I ordered Fish Pie and looked forward to finally trying it. I placed my order before the people seated at the table next to me placed theirs but their food arrived long before mine did. When the server brought me my steaming hot plate of Fish Pie and veg (which ended up being peas and carrots), she said something to the effect of "it takes longer because you don't ever want to eat fish pie cold." She was right. And it was huge! And worth the wait. It was a little chilly outside so this hot dish of seasoned fish pieces topped with creamy mashed potatoes and melted cheddar really hit the spot. I will have to bring someone with me to help eat it next time because the serving was really too much for just me. read more
Talk about comfort food! Mums definitely takes the win in that category. Very intimate setting, but if your in a rush look elsewhere. it's comfort food for a reason, they want you to relax and not rush. Your mum wouldn't want you to power eat her comfort food. The servers were jokey and interactive which made it a fun experience. reasonable pricing for the amount of food you get. The food was excellent we tried eggs benedict, pancake stack with your choice of sticky bacon or banana and cream... We had both :) read more
Going to Scotland Museum and Wanting to experience local flavor for lunch. I looked up reviews first than walked in this cute little establishment. I had a window seat so could watch the traffic going by. The ladies working there were very nice- it was a toss up between Sheppard's pie and homage sauce. Sheppard's Pie won! It was delicious! If you want real Scottish food at a great price- this place needs to be on your stop! read more

Decided on coming to Mums based on Yelp. Went with the Shepard's pie. First time having shepards pie. Was outstanding! A regular size was just perfect; not too much. The servers were extremely personable and genuine. In spite of the busy restaruant our server took time to connect with us. And to top off our dinner we had the treacle and date pudding. The ABSOLUTE BEST DESSERT Ive ever had!! Highly reccomend Mums, especially for those first-timers to Scotland (like ourselves!) read more
Mums is indeed good comfort food, and it was just what we wanted on a recent visit. The food was not exceptional, and the service was somewhat slow (although that's what we've encountered throughout most of the places in the city), which made it really 3.5 stars, but the lively atmosphere and good selection of comfort food bumped it up to 4. We had a good time. There was a large selection of sausages, and I chose the pork, with leek and bacon mash and brown gravy. Others had the pumpkin and sage pie (a little light in on filling) and the shepherds pie. Everything pretty good. Plan on taking your time here, as service was slow on just about everything (but as mentioned, this seemed par for the course in Edinburgh). They messed up a milkshake order and gave us one free instead of remaking it (?). Overall, the selection and atmosphere got Mum's to 4. read more

5/5 Steak & Ale Pie. It's huge and comes with a really nice crust of puff pastry. The gravy and filling were very tasty. The sides of veg and chips are mediocre, but don't worry too much about them, the pie is the important bit. Very nice, personable service. read more
The food and service at Mum's was great, but the seating was a little claustrophobic, which is why I'm giving this a 4/5. On our first day in Edinburgh, we dropped into Mum's because we were craving something hearty, comforting, and traditional (I especially wanted to try haggis as soon as possible). There are like 2393472847249 restaurants to choose from near Edinburgh's Old Town, and honestly, we chose this one because it appeared on a few "best of" lists online. The restaurant isn't small by European standards, but because it was pretty busy, it felt small. We were seated at a table near the back, which was pretty dim despite it being the middle of the day (you can tell by the poor lighting in my food photos). Next to us, were seated a group of young women who appeared to know each other from one of the hostels nearby. That being said, this place definitely caters/appeals to travelers/Americans. Our server was pleasant, quick, and able to explain the menu items to us. No complaints at all. I ordered the haggis from the "Starters" portion of the menu, to kick things off. For those that don't know, haggis is Scotland's traditional dish and it's made with ground up sheep/calf organs, spices, oats, and other things. I was hesitant as hell about trying this, but it smelled pretty good and was plated beautifully, on a bunch of mashed potatoes and other veggies. It also came with a gravy boat. I immediately poured gravy all over mine, which was kind of a mistake as I found the gravy to be overpowering and salty. The haggis, however, was pretty good, especially when eaten with the veggies. It's got a very unique and strongly-spiced flavor that I honestly can't compare to anything else. Just try it. Order one for the table and let everyone take a bite. Since I ordered something so unusual for me as a starter, I went with something I knew I'd love for my main dish - a vegan pumpkin and sage pie. The pies come in regular/large sizes and I'm glad I got a regular, because my friend ordered a large-sized one and it was HUGE. As a pumpkin/squash fanatic, I was all about this pie. It was flavorful, hot, and comforting. The pastry was crispy and delicious. I'm not vegan and I was very pleased. The pie was served with peas and carrots, which were pretty bland, but that seems to be the UK standard. I love those veggies anyway, so I ate them all. Also, chips (french fries) because everything in the UK comes with a side of chips. At this point in my trip, I realized that the chips at basically every place I went to look and taste pretty much the same. I don't know if they all use the same frozen chips supplier? Finally, I had to try one of their sausages. I wish I could remember which one I ordered, but it was on their specials menu (there were three options). I asked the waitress to pick her favorite, and she did. I know it was pork-based and really delicious. Anyway, a good place to drop in if you're in the area. I wouldn't go again, just because I'd rather try one of the other bazillion restaurants that maybe appeal more to the locals. read more

We came for dinner late after a long day of traveling and we were quite grumpy and exhausted. Our waitress sat down next to us and was very personable and caring. The food was absolutely DELICIOUS! Best customer service we have had in our 10 days of traveling in the UK so far. read more
A great little spot away from the touristy Royal Mile. Good home cookin', classic cartoons, friendly service and a great music play list. Eat in or take away. Breakfast was extremely satisfying - the Classic breakfast was classically good. The local sausage was yum, as was the bacon, blood pudding and everything else on my plate. The eggs with smoked salmon was also very good. The best part: a wonderful cup of coffee with warm milk - done perfectly from their espresso machine. Service was friendly, but a bit slow. Would like to return for lunch. Give this place a try, you won't be disappointed!! No frills but fun atmosphere. read more

I visited this restaurant with my sister on our trip to Edinburgh on a recommendation from a friend. It did not disappoint. The food options were simple, but well done. I ordered the shepherds pie. The mashed potatoes on top were slightly dry, but when eaten in the same bite as the delicious stew/filling in the bottom it wasn't a great detractor from the dish. The staff were a little hard to read. Not sure if their demeanor/humor were more on the dry side or if they were just having a tougher day. In any event, it was not at all a problem, just something that stands out in my memory now (writing the review approximately a month later). The restaurant decor was really kitschy. There were comics on the tables. I had a hard time selecting 4 or 5 stars for this restaurant because I feel strongly that all of the factors are in place to make this a consistently 5-star experience, even though my overall impression edged slightly more to the 4-star selection than 5 - it really was close for me! read more

It was my first time here. I loved how friend the staff was. She welcomed me in, and she found out i was a tourist, she immediately gave me a map of the city and gave me some recommendations. I really liked their coffee and the food was good too. I tried their shepherd's pie and it was very filling. read more

This was our first meal in Scotland. We thoroughly enjoyed it. I had some delicious pie--can't remember what it's called--but it was delicious. The servers were delightful and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. read more
