I'm an old guy that just walks in for a haircut. This is my second time here and my first experience was fabulous - walk in - something simple and I'm out in twenty minutes - bam! This second time I walked and the gent was busy with another guest and said, sure, give me a few minutes! Well that few minutes quickly became thirty and at that point I said got to go! My recommendation to this gent would be to tell me it will be a half hour so come back in thirty. Instead I didn't get a haircut and can't fully recommend the shop but will try again to see if my experience was just a one off? read more

Everyone here has such a charismatic, hospitable vibe and I've been here for two (2) visits - today, in fact! Had my hair cut twice by Bennie (Benny) and we have such an awesome time exchanging stories and getting to know each other and about the Montrose Barber Shop. Got a haircut once the week before a wedding in Houston (before Safe at Home Orders were issued) and I was so happy with how it turned out! This place is very clean, organized, unique, and abides by COVID-19 social distancing guidelines and has been open for the past month! The lady ( owner ) is extremely rude and doesn't know how to talk to customers. I know covid has changed people in general but she is ridiculous. Uneducated and no talent for customer service ! I'm a mother of two and work full time in healthcare taking care of people all my life. No matter the circumstances and stresses I've always been polite to the people I taken care off. Running into traffic and still trying to attend to my appointment was better then not showing up with my son. She could have nicely spoken to me when canceling my appointment when I was 15 minutes late. read more

This place is a family affair. Lynn is usually the one who cuts my hair, but apparently her dad works here, too. I never see him. The last two time I came it was just her cutting hair. Did you know she totally remodeled the place on her own? It looks nice. There's like wood paneling and high ceilings with a lot of natural light. I definitely wouldn't have been able to remodel as well as she did. I mean, I probably would've just gone to IKEA and got a lot of crap because that's where I buy most of my furniture. I didn't realize until recently that people with good taste don't shop at IKEA; only college kids and other poor people. Who knew? But you know what? Fuck what other people think. If you don't like my IKEA furniture, you can go to hell. Did you know that in Sweden everyone has IKEA furniture? Yeah, they do. I know because I read about it in "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo." After the main character hacks some computers and gets like millions of dollars (or whatever currency equivalent they use in Sweden), she heads straight to IKEA to furnish her badass house. And do you know what else they have in Sweden? Universal healthcare and free college. So fuck yeah--SWEDEN!!! When you're not in Sweden and closer to Montrose, get your hair cut at Montrose Barber Shop. But be sure you are specific about what you want. When Lynn asked me what I wanted, I just said, "Make it shorter? I dunno." Those are the words a barber HATES to hear because it's so subjective. How much shorter? She's not a mind reader. Plus, I came in there after not having cut my hair for like six months, so she had no idea how short to make it. She ended up making it TOO short, but only because I told her to use the wrong guard (a 3 guard). She even asked me if I was sure, and I said yes. When I went home, my wife was super mad at me for cutting it so short. I told her it was my own fault, and that the barber was just doing what I told her to do (which is the truth). But Lynn was nice so I went back to her. The second time I took an old picture of how I wanted to look, and she made me look just like that picture. So there's some life advice for you: bring a picture with you when you go to a new barber shop and don't know how to describe the picture you want. A picture is worth a thousand words. read more

These folks are THE BEST!! The feel here is very warm and welcoming. Lynn, and Manuella were super sweet and made me feel like a part of the family. Jack and Benny were great to chat with and the whole group makes one feel at ease. And the haircut? Flawless. Manuella's touch is super gentle but don't let that fool you. Worst haircut I have ever received, i have been to this place a few times as a kid , jack knows my father and brother kirk. I walked in and jack didn't even greet me or acknowledge me for that matter. Benny cut my hair and made me feel bad for even being there because he was "about to go home" he rushed me into a chair and ignored my request. I specifically asked to leave the curls on the top and he immediately shaved them off in a bowl cut pattern with the clippers. My lady was sitting there laughing at how my hair looked but i didnt realize the extent of how horrible it was until i got home. Long hair mixed with short hair , both sides were un even , this was hands down the worst and MOST EXPENSIVE hair cut i ever received. I can get a better haircut for half the price at any other shop. Giving a review based off only two experiences so take what you will from that. First haircut was good and the elderly gentleman cutting my hair was professional. Second time was with a different gentleman (Jack) and it happened to be on Election Day. I'd been in the chair for less than 3 min and he is talking about how we are "effed" if Biden wins because, "that means there will be two women on the rag in line for the presidency if he dies". His tone was ominous so I had to ask if he was joking... and he straight faced DOUBLED DOWN. Now I'm very open minded politically, have close friends on both sides of the aisle, and love off-color personalities but that kind of unsolicited and ignorant bigotry/hate won't win you my dollars. Walked out before the scissors came out. Giving two stars because one bad apple doesn't ruin the bunch but with plenty of other quality options around I won't be going back. read more

I just left Montrose Barber Shop after another great hair cut. I first stumbled into Montrose Barber Shop about three years ago when I moved into the neighborhood. Like a lot of other businesses in Montrose, it is a very unique. It is a classic old fashioned barber shop like you went to as a kid. And for that reason alone you should visit. Long and narrow, classic barber chairs lined up in a row. Lots of mirrors. These places are great and are disappearing fast. There's a magazine rack, of course, and a big screen TV. But there is something else going on now, something new, and exciting, and her name is Lynn. Lynn has been cutting my hair for about two years now and I wouldn't go anywhere else. The current owner of the barbershop is Jack. Jack has been a barber here since 1958! Lynn is Jack's granddaughter. She is bringing a modern sensibility to this classic old place. She is a stylist and a barber, and she is very aware of new, current trends in style as well as completely immersed in traditional barber cuts. She's also on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram! Lynn was telling me today of her plans to redesign the shop soon, and bring it into present time. It's sad to see another cool old-school place be updated, but I also think it is great that Lynn believes so much in the area, and her clients, that she is willing to make the huge commitment to modernize and transform into a barber shop for the 21st century. Now I can't wait to see what she does. I think everyone who works at the shop has cut my hair at one time or another, but since Lynn first cut my hair, I only sit in her chair. We pass the time chatting about all kinds of things; baseball, restaurants, food and travel, and even my home town, Chicago. I always leave there feeling relaxed and looking good. My wife always compliments my haircuts, so I know Lynn does a great job. If you are anywhere in the area; Glendale, Eagle Rock, La Crescenta, La Canada, Pasadena, where ever, make your way to Montrose Barber shop for a unique experience and a great haircut. Worst haircut ever... Still totally effed up looking! I have to go pay someone that isn't 90 years old and actually can see what they are doing to fix what just happened to my head. Seriously don't know how after saying 3 times that it isn't even, too long here, too long there, or a bulge on the side of my head that apparently he still couldn't see what he had done. And after all that he had the fucking nerve to say it was my fault and that I didn't tell him correctly what to do!!!!! Unbelievable! $20 fucking dollars for the shittiest haircut of my life?!?! I don't give "fives" so a four is about tops for me. This is a 'mans' barbershop... the kind you might have seen in Eastwood's hit movie "Gran Torino." People know one another but "if" you are new, hey no big deal. Everyone is friendly and soon you will be an 'old' bud and it is all the same. Jack R. owns and operates the establishment and I believe he cut Moses' hair. ;^) There are two other barbers present 'most' of the time and this is a very "patriotic" barbershop. The ambiance is 'manly' with a good number of auto and firearm magazines to read... picture window onto Oceanview gives a good view of everything up and down and discussions are often intense and sometimes funny. Haircuts are $20 (about average) and all those I've seen (and experienced) have been great. Short or long, and crewcuts or flattops are exceptional, you will be satisfied. Jack always asks how you 'want it' and inquires how it is looking. He won't butcher you ever and really pays attention to your wishes. My favorite and only shop in the area. Good place... read more

Same great haircuts but now is fully remodeled. Huge flat screen, nice decor, friendly staff, and even beer and wine while you get your hair cut! Free beer people! Lynn also can give ya a razor shave while your at it. Still cash only, but an old time gem in Montrose got much needed face lift while serving up the same great cuts. It won't matter, because everyone has already solved all the world's problems long before you walked in the door. The old school charm is complemented by the young vibe that Lynn brings to the shop. They absolutely destroyed my sideburns and against my better judgement I told the older man cutting my hair that I trusted his opinion when it came to the length on top and he cut a good 2 inches more than I asked.
