I'm absolutely appalled by the behavior of this school. I believe they discriminated against my son…read moreand targeted him with unfair punishments. They also failed to challenge him academically and his test scores plummeted before we pulled him. When my son started going to this school (age 5), he was bright and energetic. He had been reading since before preschool. He was assigned an amazing kindergarten teacher who was very loving and said she was impressed that he was a fluent reader and very good at math. He tested in the 90+ percentile on all the beginning of the year testing. In December, he tested in the 0th. The school broke him. The worst thing they did was punish him for attending therapy. I spoke with the front office, the nurse, and his teacher before the school year started to inform them that he goes to weekly therapy. All said it was fine and he would have no issues. After a few weeks I noticed they had been marking him unexcused for each appointment, even though I provided a note from his therapist each week. I began emailing the attendance secretary each week to remind her that the tardies were excused. A couple months in, we received a note that said he had accumulated too many tardies (all for his appointments) and they would be issuing him a referral if they continued. At this point I reached out to the dean of students. She said we would need to provide new doctors notes for each tardy. So we did. The very next day, she assigned my son detention for spitting at another student on the playground. This was the very first time we had ever heard a complaint from any staff at the school about my son's behavior. Although I believe that detention is a harsh and ineffective punishment for a 5 year old, especially for a first offense, I sent him to his detention a week later. From that point on, it became a fight to get my son to go to school. When we arrived in the car line he would refuse to go in, so I would park and carry him, screaming and crying, into the school. He almost got hit by a car in car line one day trying to avoid going to school. Sometime around this point in time I received another email from the dean of students explaining that she had spoken with the principal and we would need to submit a letter from my son's therapist explaining his goals in therapy and timeline of care. This is where I drew a line. My son did not want me to share this information, and his diagnoses were not affecting his performance at school. Throughout the school year, the car line staff had been pressuring me to drive away before my son was buckled. We were not holding up the line, but the car line staff are very aggressive about getting the line to move. I kept telling them I wasn't comfortable driving with him unbuckled and would move as soon as he was. We did everything we could to get him to buckle quickly. One day, the school resource officer started yelling at my father when he went to pick up my son and ordered him to drive away with my son unbuckled. At this point I emailed the principal and the parent liaison at Academica about my concerns with the car line and with the invasion of my son's privacy in therapy. I sent the email in December and still haven't heard back from the principal. The response from Academica was that they could call CPS because my son had missed too much school (referring to the tardies for his therapy appointments). I informed them that since he was 5, there are no mandatory attendance laws applicable for him, but if they wanted to report me to CPS for sending my son to therapy they could go ahead. The response was "well, if you don't have to send him, why do you?" I guess they just don't understand a parent wanting her son to get a good education. I withdrew him from school and began homeschooling him starting in January. Since then he has been learning at a much faster pace and is much happier. I regret ever sending my son here.

At first I felt excited and nervous, just because it's a new experience for me.However, Nicole, Blake, Megan & even Ms. Ivann made me feel so welcome! I joined in on a culinary class based on sauces, stocks and soups and the guests did an amazing job. The concept of the volunteer is to guide the guests & just be a kind person in their culinary journey This venue is breathtaking, the kitchen is awesome and the knowledge you gain is so worth the experience. I will definitely be back to volunteer again! The guests made: mac and cheese, green bean casserole, kale soup & an awesome salad with the veggies sourced from their own garden Please take a class! I know i definitely want to!

Ever since Publix Aprons Cooking School closed, I've been looking for a cooking school that has fun adult classes. The Kitchen House has just started a monthly "book club" called Plot to Plate where they feature a book that relates to or includes recipes. This month was Lessons in Chemistry so my friends and I decided to attend. We bought our tickets in advance as classes can sell out. The classes are different prices depending on what the class is. The house is in a residential neighborhood in College Park and does not have a dedicated parking lot so I would suggest getting there early as you have to find a spot along the street. When we arrived, we were greeted and given a welcome drink, in this case Cardamom Decaf Coffee because it was cold out. One of the instructors said that normally we would walk the garden at the beginning of class and also eat outdoors but since it was cold, we were going to skip the garden and eat inside. Once everyone arrived (cooking classes can have up to 20 people), we met in the lobby to start talking about different themes of the book. Then it was time to wash up and go to the kitchen. All the ingredients were set out for us and we picked the Veggie Pot Pie table with other attendees. The instructor gave us some knife skills lessons and then we all started cooking, using the recipes at our station. Each station makes one recipe so you don't get to make everything. And, the instructors and volunteers don't show you how to make everything first (like Publix Aprons used to do). But, if you just dig in and start going, it is a lot of fun. We had some questions along the way, like is there a spatula we can use? Or, is this the flour or the cornstarch? The volunteers were great and answered everything in a friendly way. As it said you could do in the welcome email we received before the class, some folks brought their own wine and the Kitchen House provided glasses and would pour for you. I think if we go back, we would definitely bring our own wine. My friends and I made the drop biscuits for the Veggie Pot Pie, which were surprisingly easy to make. We were finished early so we also make the Brownies for dessert that used olive oil and maple syrup instead of butter and sugar. When everyone was done cooking, we gathered in the lobby again while the volunteers cleaned and set up the table for dinner. Then, it was time to eat! Dinner was served buffet style and the Kitchen House split our food for people who had different dietary restrictions. For example, some of the recipes used non-dairy alternatives as some people in the class were lactose intolerant and one person had a mushroom allergy so they got a small spinach gallette instead of the mushroom Gallette for everyone else. As we sat down to eat, we discussed the book more in depth. Everything tasted great and we had a wonderful time. We received all the recipes in an email after the class so we could make the foods at home. I will definitely be looking at other adult classes here.

The two hour class went by in a flash and I left with a picture I'm quite proud of. I cant wait to go again! Our instuctor was Emma and she was awesome. She took us step by step, giving us ample time to finish each step before moving on. She also walked the room assisting wherever anyone needed. At the beginning of class we each put on an apron, Emma went over our tools (canvas, 3 paintbrushes, cup of water, paper towel, and colors...that was it!), and it was time to begin. About an hour in we were given a 15-20 min break to walk around the hotel (our class was held at Embassy Orlando), use the restroom, etc...Once class was over Emma took a picture of each of us, with our paintings, for their FB page. This is perfect for date night (while women dominated, there were guys), ladies night, birthday, etc...No food was served but drinks were on hand for purchase.

I saw a groupon for Paint nite and my friend and i decided to buy it and give it a shot…read more I have gone to Painting with a twist and i figured it would be the same kind of experience. Let me start by saying that the event was sold out so the class was full. The room was loud which made it quite difficult to follow and hear the instructor. I have to say that our instructor did an great job at walking us through the different steps. She also walked around the room to help anyone who needed advice or any kind of assistance. She also gave us a 15 mins break to touch up/ finish up, refill our drinks, etc. My criticism for the class is as follows: 1) I felt that the room we had was too small for the size of the class 2) I think the seating should have been better arranged. My friend and I had our backs to the instructor making it hard to follow 3) I know paint nite is supposed to be a great time with friends but at the same time I feel it is important to respect the other participants so that they could also enjoy the experience. My overall experience was OK. I completed the painting but it didn't really look like the example because I skipped a few step, being unable to hear the instructor. I'd like to reiterate that the instructor was AWESOME and did a good job. Some of the participants were loud and it made it hard for others to enjoy.
