This place is awful! I used to come here all the time when it was Evergreen but they sold out to Moon Valley. It feels like a used car dealership now. Before I used to love driving around the lot and checking out all the plants and loading up my truck. When I was done I would drive up to the check out window and pay. Now you are greeted by big signs saying employees only and are no longer allowed to drive around and have to stay in the parking lot. If you want to look around you have to be escorted by an employee with a golf cart. Unbelievable! The prices are 2-3 times higher than with Evergreen now also. I won't be coming back. read more

A huge thanks to Bryan Freytag, Brian Coville ,the nursey staff, and the installation team at Moon Valley Nurseries, El Cajon for their commitment to their product and for ensuring that the customer is happy and satisfied with their purchase. Earlier this year we purchased 6 fruit trees for our home. Grapefruit, Avacado, Pear, Guava, Mandarin Orange, and a Fruit Cocktail. With the exception of the Avacado, all have thrived and produced or are in process of producing small crops this year. We phoned the nursery for advice on the Avacado and sent them photos of the distressed tree but unfortunately, it ended up dying. With our warranty, the tree was replaced for free. No other questions were asked. Brian and Bryan have maintained personal contact to check on the status of all the trees. We were in dire need of help learning how to care for our 7 new fruit trees. Moon Valley Nurseries sent an actual degreed arborist, Christian Frese, to train us on what the trees need, how to fertilize them, mulch, detect moisture, root issues, how to prune, and what tools we should have. Christian seemed just as happy to be training us as we were to be trained! He clearly loves what he does and is extremely good at it. We were amazed at not only the breadth of his knowledge but also at how well he was able to communicate that to us in terms that we could understand. He has a way of making (what seems to us) tough concepts make perfect sense. He literally spent hours with us and would have spent more if he didn't have another client to go to as he is obviously in high demand. This is not the evergreen nurseries you probably have fond memories of. The place has a remarkably different feeling and the prices to match. It also does not seem that the old staff stayed when this transitioned hands. While the new folks are friendly, the experience feels streamlined for sales. The prices are substantially higher and they have many bigger and mature plants. Consider the family owned / brother and sister run Walter Anderson nursery in Poway and sports arena for something comparable to the old evergreen. read more

This is an update to my last review to now include the delivery and planting of my new Oro Blanco grapefruit tree. David and his crew were right on time and also provided a 30 minute heads up from the road. They worked hard and fast, and did a flawless job, including a great clean up of the site. They were obvious pros at this. They also had to maneuver the tree carefully down a path, to avoid damaging the existing plants. Well done! David also installed the feeding tubes I had prepped for the tree, and gave me great advice on how to keep the tree properly watered and cared for. Overall, very satisfied customer. read more

Save yourelf the time and frustration and go directly to Knifing or Romero's Nurseries BUT if you feel like being completely ripped off this Moon Nursery is for you. We wish Evergreen Nursery never sold to these sharks. We literally walk the grounds of this nursery and just couldn't stop laughing at just how ridiculous their prices are. Even with their "huge sale" just because they mark their plants off 50% does mean anything when their prices are 500% to 700% higher than what they should be. As i mentioned save your you value time and money and go to places like Knifing nursery or Romero's. read more

Third time lucky? For over a year, we've been trying to get some palms to take in our yard. A shout out to George Bermudas and his crew, who oversaw the latest planting. They arrived on time, were amazingly quick, yet thorough. They also looked after our other adjacent trees, adding mulch and giving them a fertilize and a water. Our journey started last summer, when three palms were planted. Poorly draining soil that, once is dry, turns hard as a rock, ended up taking out two of the trees, but we had bought extra insurance from Moon Valley. Under that plan, they brought in two replacement trees, but one was discovered to be sick immediately after planting. They promptly replaced it yesterday and now here we are! Hopefully third time lucky! The only caution to customers I would have is not to blindly follow the watering instructions provided, but to let your water be informed by soil moisture testing, if you live in a coastal area where your soil is the same bizarre clay-sand mix as ours read more

Not only is he very personable and friendly, but he is extremely knowledgeable about plants and you can tell how truly passionate he is about helping to make your yard beautiful. Moon Valley's complementary home consultation and design session was an incredible value because most nurseries charge for something like that. Scot created detailed renderings for us showing his ideas for our yard that ended up turning out great once we had everything planted with the Moon Valley team. We were very happy with our entire experience at Moon Valley Nursery in El Cajon. Previously, we purchased from Evergreen (the former nursery) a "peppermint willow" suggested by the gent who converted out backyard from grass to a "wonderlandl" (in my wife's words). Every water wise plant was superb EXCEPT for that damned willow which we had to replace twice! When we went back we were impressed with Moon Valley in the place of Evergreen nursery: the holdings were greater, our ride around the entire lot with Robert who showed us multiple choices after listening to what we wanted, then heartily endorsed the fruitless olive bush (rather than a single trunk) which we settled upon. When we were ordering the olive bush inside, we were impressed that you came over and asked if all had gone well. Then we really appreciated your clear instructions (along with the gallon of Moon Juice) as to the care of our olive. Ten days later, it was quickly and neatly planted by their crew who were, like you, polite and offered watering instructions to insure a healthy bush. Well, we have had it in the ground almost for a month now, and it is healthy looking and oh so much more attractive than our willows were. So, thank you Moon Valley for being in our area and being a perfect nursery for us octogenarians who love gardening. We will soon drop by just to look at all the plants again and to buy tomato plants. Every spring for years, I put in six or more tomatoes of various varieties to delight me, my family, and my neighbors! See you soon. read more

I had been going to Evergreen nursery for years. Their employees were good, selection was great, and prices were even better. Needless to say I was disappointed when Moon Valley bought them. I decided to give them a chance and my fears were realized. They're switching to almost all trees ($800 for an apple tree...no thanks). Their employees were uninformed and just trying to make a sale. And the selection of other flowers, shrubs, and plants that they still have from Evergreen have sky rocketed in price. One particular plant Ive bought many of there is now 4x the price. No thanks. I guess in a pinch if you absolutely need a tree and can't find it anywhere else, maybe it's worth it? read more

My husband and I purchased nine beautiful trees from Tony Giacalone and unfortunately one of our trees broke in half with a recent storm in Alpine. We purchased the insurance plan and contacted Tony who had stayed in contact with us for numerous months since our purchase to make sure our trees are doing well and we are happy. Tony very quickly and efficiently had a new tree planted for us and he made it so easy to use our insurance policy. Recently one of our trees did not appear to be doing well and within an hour of contacting Tony, he contacted me to say plum trees lose their leaves when it is cold and they would not bear fruits until next year and this is typical of plum trees. We are so happy we used Moon Valley Nursery and have Tony as our tree expert and friend. It is so much easier when you have someone like Tony who is so knowledgeable about trees and plants and seems to love his job and takes extra time to educate you about what type of trees would thrive in our yard. Truly, Tony is an anomaly in the world of sales and service and we are so happy he is helping us with our next purchases and we look forward to ordering more trees from him next year! Today I spoke with Tony and Christian who called to discuss our plum tree and said not to worry about the tree. Tony and Christian said if my plum tree doesn't; flourish in the Spring, I should contact them again; and if the plum tree needs to be replaced, they would take care of the planting and there would be no charge. I have been in search of a Red Oak to plant in my front yard for some time now. I discovered that Red Oaks are difficult to find in southern California. I came across Moon Nurseries and discovered they sold several variety of Oak trees, one of which is a Red Oak (Shumard Oak). I made a visit to the nursery and was greeted by a warm & friendly staff member. I found the tree I was looking for and made the purchase. They came to my home, delivered the tree (Which was quite large) and planted the tree for me. They did a great job and place the tree exactly as I asked them to (I was picky about the elevation of the crown). I am very pleased with my purchase and the service they provided. I did have one bad experience with a lady there one morning, she didn't seem to get my design ideas and also made me feel like I was at a car dealership, so i left with nothing. These guys made updating my landscaping to low water plants and trees SUPER easy! Tony was great about taking me around to look at the different types of trees I was interested in, and make suggestions for some of the other plants I should consider for the front of my house, now that I had removed my lawn. He even came out to my house in order to get the lay of the land! Once we had the plants decided, David and his team did a fantastic job getting everything into the ground, despite some challengingly compacted dirt.
