The Sea Lion Cove Homer, Alaska…read more There are a few hotel choices to stay at in Homer, Alaska however I highly recommend staying at The Sea Lion Cove. Let me first give you a little background information to keep in mind as you're planning your visit. Homer, Alaska is about a 225 miles drive from Anchorage. You can get to Homer by car, bus or airplane. It's about a 5-6 hour drive from Anchorage to Homer or a 45 minute flight. The drive is very scenic and offers many photo opportunities. Many people include a halibut/fishing day charter when planning their trip to Homer. Most of the fishing charters leave from an area called "The Homer Spit" Which is where The Sea Lion Cove is located. The Homer Spit is a small stretch of land with a few restaurants, tourists shops, a fish packaging center, the location where fishing boat charters depart and there are a couple places to stay at overnight. Now back to The Sea Lion Cove studio accommodations. There is an art studio on the first floor called "Sea Lion Gallery" with the same owners and above the art gallery are two rental studios. The studios are perfectly located within walking distance to the above mentioned restaurants, shops, and boat launching area. There's even a shop where you can purchase a fishing license. Everything you need is right at outside your rental. You have a free parking area so there's no worrying about parking. There are only a total of two studio rentals at this location so booking ahead is essential. Each studio is very similar however I would definitely book the "South Studio" because of a few reasons 1) north studio is not as private as the south studio because the guests in the south studio must walk past the north studio in order to get to the south studio and if you're in the north studio you'll continually see the guest walking past your windows while you are trying to enjoy your view 2) the view in my opinion is better in the south studio because there are corner windows providing an amazing view 3) the south studio has a jetted bath tub if you like that option. So remember there's only two studios 1) The north studio 2) The south studio and you want to book the "SOUTH" studio. It's not that the north is bad it's just when you're sitting admiring the amazing water view from the north studio all of a sudden there's people walking past your windows and balcony at close proximity to get to their studio, trust me south studio is the better choice. Inside the studios you'll find items that give it an apartment feel such as a toaster oven, a toaster, a microwave, a mini fridge, a tiny sink, dishes, a coffee maker, and cups just to name a few things. There's a dining table, tv, bed, futon couch that can be used as a second bed, adequate size bath with a shower and tub. (South side studio offers a jetted tub, the north side studio does not have a jetted tub) Towels and shampoo are supplied. The selling point for me aside from its great location is it's balcony deck that faces the water. Please see the photos I attached to this review. It's so great to wake up directly on the water. There are no buildings between your balcony and the water, it's an amazing view. Drinking your hot beverage in the early morning while watching the fishing boats leave for the day, is a relaxing past time. You can sit in the chairs inside or outside and just take in the views right from your studio. I can't stress enough just how great this studio is. Sure the inside doesn't have a five star feel but it's Alaska and it's a perfect place to rent for its location and view. It's clean, comfortable and quiet. Even though there's a restaurant next door I didn't hear anything my entire stay. I took a halibut fishing charter while in Homer and it was an easy walk to the boat launching area. After the fishing charter, the fish processing center was within walking distance from the studio. The breakfast place ( la Baleine Cafe ) and the dinner restaurant ( Captain Patties ) that I dined at, were both within walking distance and I recommend both dining establishments without hesitation because their food was fresh and delicious and friendly service. It was easy to make the reservations, easy to locate the studios and I would definitely stay here again. I can't say enough good stuff about this studio, for me it fit exactly what I desired and expected that it would look like. Finding the office was a bit confusing but once we did find it there were two ladies in the office. One of them (older one) pretty much scowled at us while the other one (younger one) politely informed us that our room was not ready yet since we had arrived a bit early. She awkwardly asked if there was something we could do for an hour while the room was ready. We went about our way and while in the car I was thinking about this interaction (my first impression). My husband aaked "did you notice that lady was scowling at us?" And I said "yep, I don't know why. Maybe she didn't realize that she was doing that". We shrugged and decided to visited town while waiting on our cabin. We arrived later in the afternoon and were greeted by someone completely different. This time we were greeted by a very warm and cheerful couple whom I believe must be the owners. They were very welcoming and so helpful. The lower Moose Caboose was very homey and almost reminded me of a small studio or apartment. I thought it would be an actual Caboose but it wasnt. Despite this I was very pleased with all of the amenities. This place was nicely decorated and in great condition. The view was also beautiful! Overall we had a wonderfully peaceful time. Our warm greeting from the owners, and our experience with the cabin itself was a great experience. I'll definitely pass up the scowl any time :-) but would definitely return. The lower Moose Caboose is excellent for a couple looking for a nice, peaceful time in Homer. Definitely recommend!

We try to take an active vacation with family and plus ones every other year. Before grandkids join the party I wanted to do something wild, adventurous, fun and luxurious. Alaska delivered! Stillpoint Lodge took the experience to epic. Here's a recap. We arrived Anchorage Friday night in late July 2024. We grabbed beer and dinner at 49th State Brewery and overnighted at the Hilton (hot rooms, great gym, crowded lobby) near the train station. Saturday morning we took the glass train to Talkeetna (this is cool, breakfast on board, fun commentary from the purser and beautiful scenery). We wanted to tag Denali and this was a cool way to do it. We checked in early to Talkeetna Lodge (seems like most everyone in Alaska works to make guests happy). We explored town and took a Denali flight seeing tour with glacier landing. OurTalkeetna Air Taxi pilot, Luke let one of our boys DJ and explained Denali and surrounding peaks from a climbers point of view. Stillpoint arranged for us to be picked up by seaplane Sunday morning and flown directly to Stillpoint Lodge in Halibut Cove to begin our six days of luxury excursions. Stillpoint was much more than a home base for our excursions. It was a diverse loving family that made us feel welcome and almost Alaskan. You'll read reviews about how terrific the food (thank you Matt, Carlos & Brightly), cabins (always magically clean, cozy, perfectly stocked and comfortable), massages (thank you Tara), staff (Zach, GM has assembled a team that is insanely awesome) and Halibut Cove (otters, eagles, seals, flowers, views and beauty) all 100% true! Our family book club read "The Great Alone" which perfectly set the tone for our trip. I wanted this trip to be physically and mentally challenging. I wanted us to explore Alaska in a less touristy more wild (yet safe) way. Beka, our point of contact pre trip took note and came up with a perfect itinerary. 1. Hike Grace Ridge (12 challenging miles and 3800 feet of vertical change). Dan and his dog, Griz were our lead guides and Captain Coree (because she wanted to check it out) brought up the rear. The change of terrain and weather through the day were insane (sweating, freezing, sledding, bounding barefoot through moss and the views!!!!) Do the point to point hike. It's tough on the way up but not as hard on the knees on the way down. I was really glad to have poles. Younger crowd did fine without them. 2. Remote bear viewing with Eric and Spencer. Floatplane took us to Moraine River about an hour inland where the salmon were running and the bears were abundant. We spotted the bears from the air then landed in a pond and hiked over to the river. We followed the bears up and down the bank and crossed the river for a closer look. It was amazing. Spencer is a photographer so the photos are insane. (Note: return to the lodge after excursions there is no better place to relax and happy hour and you will be ready for the Stillpoint vibe.) 3. Will, guide and JT, Stillpoint owner took us e-biking and to lunch in a cool little town, Seldovia. I'm glad we did this because it was fun spending time with Will and JT and some locals. But it was more normal... Normal to the extent anything in Alaska is normal. Still way fun! JT suggested night fishing after dinner. I didn't go but those who did loved it and the photos and fish (wow!) 4. Guys went deep sea fishing and caught a ton (loved it). Ladies hung at the lodge for nature hike, kayaks, glass beach, cooking class, massages, etc. An amazing day. 5. Hike and glacier lake with Will and Dan. We hiked to a lake (6 miles round trip) that was full of glaciers. Stillpoint had inflatable kayaks hidden for us. We paddled among the glaciers, built a fire, made smores on the beach and one of our knuckleheads took a cold plunge. Yikes! After hiking down from the lake the big Stillpoint boat captained by JT picked us up on the beach. On board he had 2 wetsuits and a wakeboard. The crazies among us spent the next hour wakeboarding in the bay surrounded by glaciers, otters and mountains. Beyond crazy fun! Thank you JT, Zack and Dan. 6. Stillpoint is far from the main Salmon runs but Chef Matt knew of a small run we could get to. Matt and Carlos (the other chef) guided us on a river fly fishing hike in waders that was a totally different kind of experience and very cool. With Stillpoint as our home base we were able to touch and feel a wide variety of unique Alaskan activites. We had so much fun with the the Stillpoint staff and enjoyed meeting other guests. We played cornhole and threw axes and sat around the fire at night. Days are long (20 hours) and we were busy. As I share with you from back home in Texas I am exhilarated and bone weary. The views -- the views!! -- are breathtaking, from the snow top glaciers and calm cove waters to the dense, lush green forests. Oh! And the activities the staff will set up for you are unbelievable. We saw humpback whales and orcas and seas lions; we went bear viewing, deep sea fishing, kayaking and more! It doesn't matter if you just want a quiet vacation to be still, do nothing and connect with nature in all of it's glory or if you're looking for an active adventure in one of the most beautiful places in the world, Stillpoint Lodge is how you do it top-notch.

It was definitely unnerving to have a wild animal fly frantically over your head for about 45 minutes while he tries to get out. We stayed under our blanket until we couldn't hear him anymore and made a beeline out of there.. When we returned hours later the bat apparently was gone. When we brought it up to the owner she definitely made us feel like liars (we are definitely not, we visually saw the bat inside of the cabin.) and refused to apologize in the slightest. She made up all kinds of excuses and insisted there was no way for the bat to be inside our cabin. It was odd how she refused to even listen to our side of the story. Then she went on about how great they are for the environment, yaddayadda. We eventually had to say "Ok you have bats. Bye." just to get away from her arguing. It's really her responsibility to make sure that the cabin is well sealed so no bugs, bats or other vermin can get in. What really bothers me is her nonchalant attitude. Something that was supposed to be a quiet get away turned into a miserable experience and little sleep. If you do book a cabin with her, make sure she's fixed the issue with bats getting in. Other than that, cabin was clean and nice. Could have been a great stay.

A gem in Alaska I…read moreintroduced my construction workers to the owners, Zane and Val ,upon their arrival in Seldovia. Zane and Val knocked my guys over with their warm and friendly hospitality right away.......and never let up. My crew worked 12 hours a day for a week They were fed a mans meal every morning. I asked one of my crew the third day "Are you getting descent b-fasts?" Answer: "we can't eat everything they put in front of us" One of them got a flat tire on his bike. Zane, moments before leaving on a fishing trip, showed my guy his garage, And welcomed him to use all of the tools and space as needed! On the last night. Zane and Val happened to be entertaining some of their own guests and had extra. My guys stuffed on steak, halibut, scallops, sautéed Vegetables and adult beverages of a wide variety. It was gourmet. The extent to which my construction crew was treated blew me away. I can't express how happy I am my crew stayed here.
