Our group of nine stayed in St. Elias, Katmai and Illiamna rooms. All the rooms were very…read morecomfortable. The only thing to note is that you can hear foot traffic from the common room in the lower floor rooms (Illiamna and St. Elias), which was only an issue in the morning around breakfast time. The common deck was a perfect place to start or end the day with views of the water. Breakfast was equally delicious with a spread of pastries, fruit, sausage, hash browns, etc. It's about a 10-15min walk to downtown Anchorage as well as the coastal trail. Steve and Monica are fantastic hosts! Would definitely stay here again when in town.

The group all seemed to know each other and the tour guide, so I felt like the odd one out. The training for the Segway was good and I felt I picked it up pretty well. We were doing fine for the first half, speeding down the road, watching seaplanes land, hearing stories of small craft aviation in Alaska. It was actually quite enjoyable and I was having a good time. Until we crossed the road to go over a grassy dip. The guide told us to power through it, but it was like going down the black diamond slope on your first time skiing. I tried to power through but didn't handle it correctly coming up the other side of the dip and ended up falling off hard. I recovered and got back on it, but a little while later, more grass to go over, I overcompensated and fell off. Then, a lip on an incline and I overcompensated and fell off. That's when I was done. My confidence was shot. What they don't tell you about Segways: your feet will hurt, a lot, from the vibrations and you can't exactly keep shifting them. You're at the mercy of the guide stopping to give you a break. Your feet and legs may also go numb after long periods of standing on the vibrating machine. These both make it harder to engage your upper leg and glute muscles to make fine adjustments to your balance. All this combined with unfamiliarity with how to navigate uneven surfaces makes it very hazardous for first-time users. And of course, after three falls, I was in more pain and feeling like a massive embarrassment in front of this group I felt I intruded on. It started as a fun adventure, but far too advanced for someone new. I wish we could have stayed on a flatter path and taken more frequent breaks. As an FYI for new folks: there's no easy way to bail off a Segway if you feel you're going to fall. If you fall, you'll fall hard. It's not like just falling over in snow. Segway Tours were very nice and their tour guide was very knowledgable, but this type of Segway riding may not be for everyone.

After looking at several options, we decided to go with Red Eye Rides. Communication was awesome the entire time and Paul, our driver, was fantastic. The trip down to Seward felt like a sightseeing tour at times because Paul pointed out different things along the way, including a huge bald eagle nest and historical information about the road and our trip down. Again, if you need to get to Seward from the Anchorage airport, Red Eye Rides is top notch.

Our person whom we spoke to on the phone and the driver were nice and courteous, but beyond that,…read morewe would never use Red Eye Rides again. The 15-passenger van was in bad repair. The exterior was damaged from a previous accident. We rode in the first set of seats and had a non-functioning seat belt. The inside of the van was filthy, the windshield was broken, and the vehicle had bad shocks, which was a safety hazard on the mountain roads. Our driver also repeatedly looked at his clipboard and phone for text messages while driving a loaded van of passengers. We were beyond disappointed.

We stayed here for two weeks while using Anchorage as our home base. The b&b is located such that…read morewe were easily able to walk into town and down to Ship Creek. We walked those routes many times during our stay. It was also very conveniently located within walking distance of the Alaska Rail station. It is not located near any grocery stores, however, so we did a big Costco shop shortly after our arrival in Anchorage. Our room was on the top floor and we had a great view through the living room window. The bedroom has plenty of closet space as well as a comfortable queen sized bed and ceiling fan. The bathroom is small with no bathtub, but has an awesome rain shower. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Because we stayed as long as we did, we did not receive the bagged breakfast offered to other guests. We were asked what we would like and were given fruit, bread, eggs, yogurt, butter, bacon, bananas, apples, oranges and granola. Basically, everything we asked for, we received. It was great being able to make our own breakfasts! Compared to the price of hotels, many of which are located only a block or two away from the Arctic Fox, this place is a good deal. As well, as the privacy of your room, you have access to a large outdoor deck with tables and chairs as well as a grassy area with a table and chairs and there is a common room and a laundry room. A cab to/from the airport cost us just $25. Now, as for the negatives. Anchorage has a homeless problem. Many homeless are attracted to a soup kitchen located within a block of the Arctic Fox. They did not harass us or approach us at any time, but they are there in numbers and it wasn't all that pleasant having to walk by them as often as we did. Most nights we didn't hear them either, but there were a couple of nights where they kept us awake with their shouting. This b&b is also located near the train tracks and during the day, especially if you have your windows open, the trains can be noisy. We were not bothered at night, however, because the bedroom is on the side opposite to where the tracks are located.

We didn't mind walking around but if you want to be close to restaurants/shops this may not be the place for you. It doesn't look like much on the outside but once you're inside, it's pretty. There are no elevators so if you have bags they will help you carry them up. The common area is on the 2nd floor and so was our room. Some rooms share bathrooms. We didn't want to share so we requested a room with your own bathroom. When we checked in, Carol took good care of us, she was our host during our stay. She was a sweetheart, every morning she made breakfast and it was good. Yes, your stay comes with free breakfast. If you can't stay for breakfast just let your host know the day before and they will prepare you a bag and have it ready for you in the morning. House keeping was great! Our room was spotless! The whole place was spotless! The only complaint I have is that the walls are thin. It's an old house, I understand. We are from the east coast so we were in bed by 8pm. When other people came back from dinner we could hear them loud and clear, the walking and closing doors, etc. This was our first time at a Bed & Breakfast so we didn't know what to expect. While we enjoyed our stay we have discovered that we actually preferred hotels over B&B's. If you like B&B's and don't mind walking to the center of town or driving, then I would say give this place a try.

The staff is helpful and friendly and it's the "hippest" hotel by far in all of Anchorage IMO and I've stayed in MOST of the Hilton hotels in Anchorage and the Captain Cook. The only downside of the Wildbirch is the noise -- it can be a little noisy downtown if you select a room facing 4th street. I'm a light sleeper and it wasn't TOO bad, but it wasn't quiet. They give you earplugs to drown out the noise. The rooms are really exceptional with lots of dimming capabilities for the various lights, super nice touches, nice coffee features, super cool/ cute / clean bathroom, the bed is top notch with super nice linens. Nice little coffee shop and super cool looking bar/restaurant. Anchorage has come a long way! All in all, I would stay again, as the hotel options in Anchorage are not very good, nor have they ever been good. It would be nice to have a machine to make some white noise to drown out the cars on 4th street -- I would give this place 5 stars! Nice addition to the hotel scene in Anchorage! We booked this hotel because it was in walking distance to the Alaska Railroad terminal, where we…read morewere coming from after sailing on a long cruise that docked in Seward. It turns out that the two-block walk is up a steep hill, so we needed to wait about 15 minutes for a taxi because walking uphill with all our luggage was impossible. We ended up at the hotel at about 11pm and had an 8am flight the next morning, so all we wanted to do was get some sleep. We arrived at the hotel with a security guard standing by their luggage carts, watching us schlep our four rolling bags. He or nobody else offered to help. The check-in staff was efficient and friendly enough, recommending we take the far elevator because the closer one would involve steps. We walked the length of the hotel, about as long as the cruise ship, pushing a heavy luggage cart. The cart came within millimeters of hitting the smoke detectors on the low ceiling, an uncomfortable feeling like driving a minivan through a low parking garage. When we arrived at our room, we opened the door and there was somebody sleeping in it! More correctly, they were in the adjacent room and the connecting door between the two rooms was open. We closed the connecting door and found ourselves in a studio with a double sized murphy bed with a couch in front of it. We moved the couch, lowered the bed, found pillows on a shelf and tried to sleep. We ending up sleeping only about three hours. The air conditioning was very loud and we used towels from the bathroom as pillows because the pillows were far too thick to be comfortable. Now awake, we checked our reservation and saw that we had reserved a room with a king bed, not a double pullout bed. We called the front desk staff, who again was friendly enough, but there was no manager on duty so they said someone would call us back. We expect in the end we'll get back the points we used for this room as Hyatt Rewards members, but that's not going to make up for the very poor ending to an otherwise wonderful vacation.

I chose to stay at a BnB instead of a hotel for recovery; mostly because of an intimate setting instead of a busy hotel. They had hosted others for surgery and knew a lot about the schedules, the recovery of others and calmed a fear or two. The breakfasts were over the top with fruit, cereal and hot breakfasts. There was always tea and coffee available. They were helpful, provided a few rides to the surgery center, played cards with me, and had great conversations! Thank you Jim and April! I plan to be back to see you soon and stay whenever we have a need to stay in Anchorage!!

Spent one night at the beautiful Black Bear B & B but wished I could have moved in. The cabin is…read moreawesome. It is an excellent get away spot that is just right to relax and enjoy being in Alaska. The cabin is heated with a modern bathroom and partial kitchen. By partial kitchen I mean: refrigerator, microwave, sink and coffee maker. There is a gas grill on the front porch however. The cabin sleeps four with two in the master bed and two in the small single beds in the loft. There is also plenty of room for others to stretch out on the floor. The owner, Maggie, is very friendly and helpful. Hope, AK is small but is a very clean and nice historical town. Check out the Seaview Cafe for a great beer selection, delicious food and an amazing view. Definitely add the Black Bear B&B and Hope, AK as a side trip as you tour the Kenai Peninsula.
