Salmon Berry Tours arranged our 10-day stay in Alaska and it began with 4 nights at the Copper Whale Inn (please see separate review for Salmon Berry Tours). We arrived at 1:30am and had clear instructions on how to enter the Inn and how to get into our rooms because Lorene, the General Manager, texted a few days before our arrival to give instructions. Our keys were just where she told us they would be and we got into our rooms easily. After a full day of traveling we really appreciated the easy access and extremely comfortable beds. My teenage kids were in the Pilot's Lounge which had a queen bed and pull out couch with a private bathroom. It was perfect for their needs. My kids enjoyed the tea kettle and coffee maker. My husband and I got the Inlet View room which was a bit bigger and also had a private bath and a great view of the Cook Inlet. I appreciated that the room had a refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker. On our third day there we were able to use the washer and dryer after 6pm for a nominal fee. The entire place is extremely clean and cleverly decorated. The breakfast is something to rave about! Star carefully sets breakfast out very early in the summer mornings. The spread, while we were there, included boiled eggs, many varieties of yogurt, granola, cereal, pastries, meats, cheese, bagels, lox, fruit and more. We really appreciated the gluten free bread and oat milk. The coffee was the best we had in Alaska! We enjoyed sitting with other guests and talking to them about their Alaskan adventures. We loved our time at the Copper Whale Inn. Lorene treated us like family and made sure that we felt welcome. She planned a special getaway for our family which kick-started our amazing stay in Alaska. Her attention to customer service really sets this place apart from the other hotels we stayed at while in Alaska. On our 4th day we had an early train and had to leave at 5:30am. Star was setting up for breakfast and offered us food to go. We got to the train station and one of my kids realized that they did not have their phone. We were in a panic trying to figure out what to do, when the other kid yelled "Look, there is Star". Yep, Star saw the phone and water bottle in the kitchen and got into the car to find us. Disaster averted until that same kid later realized they also lost their wallet. We had to get on the train, but we texted Lorene and asked if Star could check the room. Star tore the room apart with no luck. No other hotel would provide this type of personal care. Oh, It turns out that my husband had the wallet in a secret pocket of his back pack- sorry Star!! We ended our trip back at the Copper Whale Inn. We were very excited to go "home" for one last night. The kids got the same room and my husband and I got the SpeakEasy which was super cool. The bed in that room was also extremely comfortable. We found the hotel to be very quiet and we slept with the windows open with no issues. Outside of SpeakEasy there is a nice water feature that is not only gorgeous, but provides white noise. The deck outside of the room was being replaced while we were there and that will be super nice when completed. Again, we loved this establishment. Star and Lorene put it over the top. The breakfast area was very nice and offered a good array of choices. A number of good restaurants were within walking distance. This is a hidden gem, nestled on a street corner just steps from what I would call tilde flats. It is also next door to Simon & Seafort's Saloon & Grill, which I would also recommend. We stayed in the Bootlegger room. The room was showing some age, but was clean and the bed was SO comfortable; even my husband liked it! Lorene, the manager, couldn't have been more friendly and accommodating. The continental breakfast had a lot to offer, from different types (even GF) breads, cereals, fruit, boiled eggs, salmon lox and cream cheese for the bagels, and, of course, coffee and a selection of teas. I'm so glad the conference hotel was booked up. I found an inlet-facing, relaxing room here. Copper Whale sits between the Earth and Mars on the planet walk, is only about 2-3 blocks from the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail along the inlet, and is 5 (very short) blocks from the "arts" area on G Street (aka Darwin's). The walk to the anti-labor hotel hosting my conference was a bit longer but well worth it. Pretty much everything in Downtown Anchorage is an easy walk from here, and likely an even easier bike ride. And a bonus: This was less expensive than the conference hotel. This trip was taxpayer-funded, so that means something to me. I was here for work, so I wasn't able to fully enjoy the B&B aspect. However, breakfast was available early enough to enjoy it out in the spring air. Quite nice coming from 90 degree weather in May. Here the tulips hadn't even opened. Ferns still were unfurling. Nice. The folks here answered questions over email while I was in flight. I had forgotten that I'd be checking in very late (AKDT), but they have an easy way to handle it. I had to check out too early, but they seem ready to handle just about anything. Wi-Fi performance was better than at most hotels I've seen. I chose the shared bathroom option. Spent the first half of our trip in Anchorage and stayed at the Copper Whale- it was AMAZING! The owner was available via text 24/7 and helped us with anything we needed and made sure we were comfortable and taken care of for our whole stay. The room was nice and warm, hot water lasted forever, and water pressure was great! Wifi worked perfectly, and gift cards were provided for breakfast for the cafe right across the street and the food and coffee there were perfect! Overall a GREAT place to stay! read more

What a charming small inn on the edge of downtown Anchorage. We stayed in room 14, and although it was a bit small and ell-shaped, it was comfy and quiet. The inn is divided between the main building and a secondary building below the front house. Each building has a common area with a kitchen, refrigerator and magazines. Our room had a small waterfall in a patio just outside the bedroom window and another small patio outside the back door of our room. It was nice, too, that there is a well-stocked bike rental shop on the front corner near the entrance to the hotel. Although there was tea and a small bowl of fruit in the main lobby living room, it would have been nice if there had been wine or light appetizers available in the afternoon. read more

Based primarily on Yelp reviews we stayed at the Copper Whale Inn on May 17, 2017. I had reserved the room four months in advance, on January 17. Yet, they put us in what they later said was their "last-assigned" room -- one they should not assign to guests at all. As we reserved so far in advance, I do not know why they stuck us there. Note that everything about this place except the room was fine; nice house centrally located and well-maintained, courteous people, good breakfast. But if you go, insist on NOT staying in the Carriage Room. It is in the very front of the building, less than 30 feet from traffic on the busy street. And the Inn sits on an intersection, so cars, motorcycles, and trucks were always stopping and noisily accelerating, all night long. If that wasn't bad enough, the heater in the room would not turn completely off. At 2am it was 78 degrees in the room, and it didn't cool off any from there. I informed the manager the next morning and she kindly credited $15 off our bill for the indefatigable heater. I suggest the owners stop assigning that room, unless they warn potential guests about the noise. (I assume they have or will fix the heater.) My reason for this review is to save future guests from having to endure a night in that room like we had. read more

What a great place to stay! Came to Anchorage originally for 4 nights and stayed only 3 at the Copper Whale. Upon arriving, Nick greeted us and was super helpful/informative and as were all Alaskans, very friendly! The location is pretty great and central. We could walk almost anywhere needed, although we rented a car for a portion of our stay since we wanted to explore more then the city. The room was clean, bright, and has a functional heater. Private bath was well stocked. The only complaint about the room was the pillows, omg my neck was so stiff after the first night...they were so flat. So i recommended upon our early departure they consider replacing them. Even two pillows made no difference, I would gladly recommend folks come stay here for future Anchorage visits. Parking garage is available across the street for $15/night; just make sure you display the correct tag properly! read more

What a happy accident! We decided last minute to stay in the city center before heading to the cruise. Wow. What an amazing find! Staff was super courteous and informative. Breakfast was perfect. This small bed and breakfast feel place was just the right place to stay in anchorage. It's location is great to the downtown area with shops, breweries, and restaurants. The rooms are set up with a comfortable queen bed and pull out couch twin bed that is just as nice. The window unit kept the room at an adequate temperature. The shower was hot with great water pressure. The staff was exceptional. The front desk man (can't remember his name) is a gentleman and made our stay even better. He is accommodating and knowledgeable of the downtown anchorage scene. Candace is also nice. The breakfast was delicious with bagels, croissants, variety of jams, and cereals. The coffee was absolutely amazing. It's roasted from Caffe' D'arte a local coffee roaster that is a must try for all the coffee drinkers. If you're in anchorage stay here! read more

This is not your avarge hotel stay. It's a home away from home. You are welcomed by a quaint warm feeling as you walk in and through the hallways towards your room. The room itself was smaller compared to some larger companies, but hey it was that "I'm at home" feeling that makes it feel just the right size. With a communal Kitchen area that has coffees and teas ready to go waking up the next day from a soft clean bed is just the way to start the day. The continental breakfast included in your stay is no way dull. Breakfast here is different. They have everything out for your choosing. Fruits, eggs, bacon, etc. All this for a fair price too! A little over a hundred is what we owed but with everything offered and the nice, helpful staff it's way worth it. This B&B was a complete delight! We were three friends traveling together, so the suite (room 15) was perfect for us. Our 2-night stay was relaxing & so very enjoyable. space was extremely clean, charming and quiet. beds were cushy & quite comfortable. The hotel was alright but the terrible thing is that check out was at 10 am and our flight was at 11 pm. We asked politely multiple times to have it pushed back and they said no. Then all of a sudden at 9:54 am 6 mins to check out some guy comes to our room to ask if for 50 dollars we would want to push it back to 1pm. We were already packed and had the car loaded so we declined. Then 20 minutes later we got a text from the manager saying, "We would have let you stay for free but now it's too late". this place was awesome. we had just flown in from SF to anchorage and arrived around 11:30 pm (when the sun was still out) to this lovely bed and breakfast. it was so well kept and our room was nice with a lovely view of the bay. they also had GREAT blackout window covers for when the sun came up at 4:30am. in the morning, there is a large spread of pastries, cereal, coffee, juice and fruit downstairs. its not like a usual breakfast at a hotel, but more like an ACTUAL breakfast. and then you can sit in the little living room area and chat up the other guests. upstairs, as a guest you share a bathroom with the other guests which is totally fine as it is very well kept. the inn is very accessible to those with disabilities and there is internet available on a shared computer downstairs. but, why would you want to be on the internet when you could walk outside and rent a bike from the bike rental place on the property and ride around near the water? read more

The breakfast is bountiful & served for a number of hours. There's a reason it was recommended in every guidebook I read. It was worth every penny we paid & I would give it only 2 dollar signs. Truly as good as it gets. My housemate recommended this place as a sweet and comfortable overnighter after a late night downtown. I called late at night to reserve a room for the next night. Glenn took my call even though he was at a dinner! He took my name and number and said he would get things set up for me right away in the morning. Although he sent me reservations for one room, by the time we showed up, he had switched us to an apparently nicer room with a great view of the inlet. When we walked in there were mints on our pillows! I don't know if anyone was staying in the room next to us, but we certainly didn't hear a peep the whole night. Although breakfast is supposed to end at 10 on Saturdays, when we came up at 11 to turn in our key, breakfast was still out and the host kindly allowed us to serve ourselves and he delayed his clean-up. The sitting area had a very clean, homey feel with great comfy couches. I hope I get to go back sometime! NOTE: Don't forget to take advantage of the great dinner package deals! We ate at Ginger the evening before and got a 20% discount on our room rate!! read more

I stayed here with my sister and stayed in a room with 2 twin beds for just 1 night before more people joined us. They were very accommodating with coming after check in time. They just put a letter on the door with your name and instructions on what to do. I room itself was a bit small but I guess we are in downtown. The location was excellent, you can walk around to many places. The beds were probably the best that we had slept on during our whole trip. They also have tea set out so you can get it before bed. The breakfast was breads, fruit, cereal, yogurts and such. There wasn't any hot items for breakfast. The breakfast room is just in the living room of the house so it's an interesting set up. read more

What a jewel the Copper Whale Inn is! As a former Alaskan, I knew of the Inn, but nothing about it. Although I had driven/walked past it hundreds of times I never inquired about it, just recognized it's unique location in proximity to Cook Inlet & Downtown. Like you, I rely on these reviews to help me make a choice but please don't let the review of the 9/11 post & 1-star review discourage you from coming to the CWI. Yes, there is meter parking on the street, but its free from evening to 9 AM (?) on weekdays, weekends, & holidays. Late check in; no worries, the inn keeper leaves a note with explicit instructions on how to get into your room (we checked in after 9 pm) Yes, there are stairs - it's a 100 year old house on a sloping lot! No luggage assistance? Really?? Do be aware that this B&B sits at a main intersection so noise MAY be a factor for some, depending on room location. My only negative comment is that the breakfast was disappointing & the only reason I'm giving them 4-stars, rather than 5. It's the standard American continental fair of carbs, carbs, carbs, from Costco! While I don't expect a hot, cooked breakfast, it would have been nice to have seen some local fare on the bar, such as smoked salmon, gravlax, reindeer, or other meat/food item that is reminiscent of Alaska's cultural history (Native/Russian/Norwegian). However, I'm still looking forward to our return in December! read more

The Copper Whale was my favorite out of the 4 places we stayed in Alaska. The decor was the perfect balance between modern and quaint. The continental breakfast advertised was extensive and bordered on full breakfast. The rooms were spotless and the view spectacular. It was within easy walking distance to everything we needed. Convenient location. Small rooms, and small beds. The rating is a result that after our first night there was no housekeeping service. Bed not made, towels not replaced, trash not emptied. There is no on-site management so if you have a question or problem, you have to make a phone call. read more

I had a FANTASTIC experience! The Inn was very cute, comfortable and well decorated. My room upstairs had a wonderful view and was very clean. I found the bed to be extremely comfortable. Noise was never a problem. The staff was kind and helpful. I got in at 1am and they did a great job of leaving instructions. We stayed at night at either end of a small boat cruise. (check out Discovery Cruises, great operation) Good location near the downtown shops. The first night we had a room with a view of the mountains and water. Second night no view, but a nice wooden patio to enjoy. The rooms and common areas are spotless. Noise wasn't a problem for us.
