I have been wanting to try Platelet-Rich Plasma therapy for a few thin spots that have appeared in my hair. Dr. Barrera spent a lot of time discussing the procedure with me, including showing me before and after pictures of his patients who have undergone the procedure. Dr. Barrera then personally drew the blood for the procedure as well as doing the injections in my scalp. He numbed my head before doing the injections, and the procedure was painless. His bedside manner is very good and his fees are reasonable. It's obviously too early to know whether the PRP treatment will be effective for me, but I decided it was worth a shot before I go for hair transplants. Dr. Barrera and I discussed hair transplants and other procedures that I asked about, and was very open in discussing options and costs. She was so patient with me and truly cared. we made my appointment and I met with Dr. Fortes coordinator Denise. She too informed me step by step from my pre-op to my post op exactly what I needed to do prior to day of surgery and thru post op. Then I was introduced to Dr. Fortes. I had a lower back lift, a tummy tuck with lipo as well as a breast reduction, lipo with augmentation. He made me feel so comfortable as he had to look at my body and explain to me how all my procedures would be done with what I was asking to look like. After I got dressed he came back in to see if I had any other questions or concerns or fears in which I replied I had just one fear......I was afraid of the unknown pain I was going to face ahead of me. He promised me I would have no pain at all just discomfort but he was sure it would be nothing I could not handle. Dr. Fortes uses a pain med during surgery called EXPERAL it cost extra but it was so worth it. All the surgery I had done all at once, I never felt any pain what so ever. We had a quick consult, and scheduled the procedure for the first day of Spring Break so that she would have the week to heal. My review concerns their scheduling policy. I find it to be highly unethical. I was told that if I wanted to get a consultation and surgery within the year, I had to put down a nonrefundable 10% of the cost of surgery. So, you are forcing me to commit to a very invasive, risky, and expensive surgery without ever having informed consent from the surgeon, whom I have never met? I think people who are seeking information about serious surgical body modifications should be able to make decisions concerning these things after meeting the person who will be permanently modifying their body. A consultation is not only about informed consent. It is also when the patient gets to meet the surgeon and determine if this is the person they want to perform their surgery with. And what if I decide to do no surgery based on the information I am given? People should not feel forced to make decisions like this uninformed and on the spot. What if I decided to go with a different surgeon? So that means I lose $3k? Also, I have no idea precisely what I need because I rely on the surgeon's expertise. When I spoke to the woman to give me a quote, I was guessing which procedures I needed. Anyhow, personally, this is a major RED FLAG. I believe it to be completely unethical and exploitative. I think charging a no-show fee for those who don't attend consultations is warranted. But forcing people to put down payments on serious surgeries without information about the pros and cons and never meeting the surgeon makes me question the character and ethics of this doctor.
