Mordecai is a great restaurant/bar to give a try if you have not done so yet. This restaurant has a great upscale chill atmosphere with a view of Wrigley Field. I got the focaccia basket to start. The bread came out warmed. It was paired with a maple butter and a parmigiana dip. The bread had bit of a spice to it, but it was very good and different! Definitely suggest trying it out! Lovely cocktail spot in Wrigley that's been on my to-do list for far too long. Beautiful bar area that I could stare at all day. Cocktails were SUPERB. The bartender's name is escaping me but she was excellent - attentive, friendly, & happy to talk/answer any questions we had regarding the cocktails or their wonderful mezcal collection. They do have food but we went mainly for drinks, however I wanted a snack so ordered the polenta fries... whoa so good. Came here for drinks with friends. It's right across from Wrigley Field, and we went when there was a concert going on, so understandably it was full. However, we were seated upstairs and served quickly. The place is well designed and everything looks nice. Our server was great, and understanding when I didn't like a certain drink and gave me a suggestion for a different one. Most of the drinks were okay, but not up my alley. However, I did finally try one that I loved. My friend also ordered a pesto and clam pasta, and that was absolutely delicious. More of a 4.5. I subtracted a star for the underwhelming octopus appetizer along with the fact that it arrived a couple of minutes after my entree. For our first visit to Wrigley, we didn't allot enough time to experience the area for a "Cubs" meal experience. We were here for Foo Fighters anyway and would be back later in the week for a ballgame. Fortunately, we happened upon Mordecai and were able to get a table with a short wait. Simply decorated, the bi-level cocktail restaurant is located inside the Hotel Zachary. They have a small patio overlooking Clark street to experience the Cubs vibe should you be dining when they are home. Needless to say, the restaurant was quite busy during our visit and was full of diners enjoying a nice meal before rocking out to the FOOS. I enjoyed a couple of Improved Shandy craft cocktails before and during my porchetta. I have to say that this was one of the best meals I've had in a long time. Served with corn-bacon risotto, stone fruit-tomato salad, smoked paprika oil, this combination was exquisite and the porchetta was was perfectly prepared. Presentation warranted multiple photo retakes to capture the perfect picture for my Yelp review. Our waiter Austin did great and was very personable even with the hustle of the restaurant. I believe this place is relatively new and overall did a wonderful job in removing that busy feel you know was happening just outside. A sophisticated dinner was definitely enjoyed and I would not hesitate to come back. I just don't know if I would be bold enough NOT to order the porchetta to try something else. #SYOY read more

I loved the mocktail - Lemon Balthazar - it's exactly what a non drinker would want in an adult drink that does not have alcohol in it. We had the lobster and shrimp dip (not enough baguette and not enough flavor), the orechetti (yummy sausage with a good spicy flavor), the spaghetti and meatballs (yuuummmmm- meatballs are a tad salty but delicious and hit the spot perfectly), and the beignet dessert with popcorn (such a perfect ending- really enjoyable). The desse I saw a review in a national magazine accusing it of being elitist and hipster, the author claimed no one in Cubbie Blue would go there. Well, the excellent craft beers were $6, while I paid $10 to $14 do crummy non-craft beers in Wrigley. And since I am over the age of 25, I have no desire to go to the Cubby Bear down the block and drink crummy beer at inflated prices. So I would highly recommend Mordecai! read more

Mordecai is another feather in the cap of Matthias Merges; an elegant spot for a drink after a Cubs game, or as a destination in its own right. Our first visit was Saturday afternoon on Memorial Day weekend. When the Cubs ended the seventh inning in the lead, we left our third base seats and a mere five minutes into the future settled into a front row table facing Clark Street, a glorious view of the ball park and fans with the windows open to a beautiful Saturday afternoon. The seats were comfortable and the cocktails delicious. Our second visit was a chill fall evening. We arrived on Friday night and requested a table on the upper level. The maitre'd escorted us up the main elevators, past the check in desk, through the Zachary Hotel bar (which is spacious and gorgeous), and into the dining room, tucked away past a catwalk overlooking the main entrance. It was quite a production, and not unappreciated. We admired the views of the ballpark and settled into the sparsely populated dining room. The highlight of the evening, and Mordecai's strength, are the cocktails. The Old World, with bourbon, brandy, rum, and two amaros, is spectacular. Kelly liked her Old Mills, a fluffy gin and egg white concoction, and found their Aviation to be top notch. If you are seeking beer, there are a few local options on tab, and some interesting "packaged" selections. For dinner, the wine list is small but they have a nebbiolo from the Langhe and a Cahors; both are good. The food can be hit and miss, but overall is good. For appetizers, we had the chicken liver mousse and the pate. The pate was fine, but - and I cannot stress this enough - do NOT order the chicken liver mousse. It has a thin watery consistency when it should be creamy, and it comes out topped with a gelatinous paraffin fatty seal. It was not pleasant. The pork chop, with apples and calvados jus, was good, but it was not cooked as thoroughly as you'd probably expect - the insides were soft and pink. It was an odd but purposeful choice by the chef - I was told that because the pork was of such high quality the cooking time could be minimal. I went with it and suffered no ill effects, but texturally I prefer my pork to be a bit firmer. In any event, you have been warned. Kelly had the Black Truffle Ricotta Agnolotti and found it quite flavorful and not overly large - there were no leftovers. I particularly liked the chicken skin. For dessert, I believe we had a pot de creme, which was excellent. The upstairs was practically deserted on a Friday night, so the service was excellent and the vibe romantic. The hardest decision you'll have is whether to have after dinner drinks at the hotel bar or in Mordecai. We opted for the former but will have to return for the latter. read more

I came here for a first date the other day and Mordecai has been on my wish list for quite a while now! I heard they have a good burger and they had a good bourbon selection so I was excited for it with me being a Bourbon Enthusiast. Mordecai is a cocktail bar in the newish Hotel Zachary right across from Wrigley Field. I used to the live in Wrigleyville, but I moved right before the gentrification was completed. Man Wrigleyville has changed! The vibe of Mordecai was very cool! It was dimly lit, modern, sleek, and quiet so it is great for a date night. My date and I were there for about 2-2.5 hours, which was great because they didn't kick us out, like Piece Pizza did the night before (Piece had a 1.5 hour limit). Our server was solid as he came around filling up water constantly, which was greatly appreciated as I was expecting a future hangover. For the record, I did not have a hangover so thank you! I checked out their bourbon selection on their wall, but I wasn't too impressed so I opted for their cocktails. I am always on the prowl to find unicorns at a decent/justifiable price. I will have to look at a spirits menu next time to see their selection and their prices. So maybe they do have some unicorns. For drinks, I ordered the Three Finger Old Fashioned and my date had some wine. The Old Fashioned was one of the best Old Fashioned's I've had in the city! It wasn't overly sweet, it was very balanced, and it was really all about the whiskey. The whiskey was a house blend bourbon, which I should try neat next time. The Old Fashioned was a hefty pour and I see where they got the name for it! My date liked her wine as well! We ordered the Charcuterie Board to start, which was excellent! The meats and sourdough bread was great. The bread smelled like a grilled cheese, which was interesting and it was decently soft for being toasted. Amazing flavor! The plate was fairly big and big enough for like 3 people. Now onto the burger. I was very excited to try as I heard good things about it and it will be added to my Burger Reviews! Unfortunately, I thought the burger was very bad... I found it odd that our server said that you could only order it medium or above. I forgot the exact reason, but maybe because of the chef's equipment or for health reasons. Either makes sense. Anyways, I ordered it medium. My rule of thumb is that you always order a burger at a restaurant a scale down of what you actually want. I like mine medium so I would have ordered it Medium Rare. My reasoning behind this is because restaurants usually have heat lamps to keep the food warm until it's served. If the burger isn't served immediately, which usually isn't the case at restaurants as there is usually some wait time, then it sits under that heat lamp for a while, which actually cooks the burger more. I believe this is exactly what happened to my burger because it came out more like Well Done and the patty had like zero flavor. The bun was actually slightly hard/crusty because of the heat. The same thing occurred with the bacon where it was super crispy as all of the fat was dried out. The toppings were solid though as I liked the cheese, lettuce, onion, and pickles. The aioli was solid as well, but the fries were average. Due to the dryness of the burger, it needed some sauce. Maybe I was supposed to pour the aioli over and if so, then my mistake! I hate to say it, but that burger was one of the worst burgers I've had in Chicago... :( My date ordered the Truffled Chicken Nuggets and she said they were excellent! So I think the burger is just a bad item on the menu and I think my theory was the exact reason for why it was bad. Whatever it happens. Prices were expensive, which was expected. Like I said above Wrigleyville has gone through gentrification and it is now River North/West Loop prices. Most of the main dishes were $25+ and the sandwiches were like $15-$20. My burger was $18 with bacon. Cocktails were average at about $15/cocktail. The quality of my Old Fashioned was there so I think $15 is actually a good price. But the craziest thing on the menu was the beer prices!!! A $9 Half Acre Daisy Cutter or a $6 Old Style. Are you kidding me! Hopefully that Old Style is at least a tall boy, but still you can find them in Chicago for like $4. And that Daisy Cutter is a local beer where you can easily find it on draft for $5-$6 at a bar or a 4 pack at Binny's for $12! Overall, Mordecai is a great place for a date, but it's pricey due to the gentrification. The Old Fashioned was amazing and I would love to come back to try the house blend bourbon neat and some more cocktails! So maybe Hush Money is more of my cup of tea. The burger was a massive disappointment for me and it's a hard pass next time... The charcuterie board was great so their food wasn't actually terrible, but I think the burger definitely needs improvement. read more

Decided to try out Mordecai for our date night. We sat on the patio overlooking Gallagher Way. It was the perfect place to sit and people watch and the vibes were great! We each ordered a cocktail and they were amazing! My boyfriend got a Golden Glove and I did the Old Fashioned. Would love to come back and try some of the other creative drinks on their cocktail menu. For an appetizer, we split the Tuna Crudo. It was very fresh and light. For our entrees, I ordered the Spinach Rigatoni and he ordered the Fish and Chips. Both entrees were underwhelming. My pasta lacked a ton of flavor and was a bit watery and his fish and chips were a 3/5, not bad, but not spectacular. Our service was a little slow and it took our server about 10 minutes to come over to even get our drink order. Despite being new and working out a few kinks, Mordecai exceeded expectations. Service started off a little slow, but was friendly. I ordered my burger medium, but it came out well done. I didn't send it back because I was starving and the flavor was still good. The manager stopped by our table. After gently passing along feedback he went above and beyond to correct the situation. There's nothing better than minor snafu's being corrected immediately. The burger and dessert were delicious. ..but I'll add Mordecai to my bar rotation because of the excellent service. Mordecai is a newly opened, beautifully designed restaurant right across Clark from Wrigley Stadium. A much more upscale spot compared to other places on the same block. Being newly open, we expected some growing pains and indeed there were a few. Dinner started with a beautiful cocktail. I can't imagine this place can make a bad drink. We also ordered the cheese curds, which anywhere else in Wrigleyville would have been fine, but these were elevated with beautiful bonito flakes and mayo based sauce, plated to perfection (see photos). We also had the chicken liver capped with duck fat served with toast and pickled turmeric veggies. The dishes kept coming, and we dug into a grilled romaine panzanella. This salad was beautiful and well balanced and dressed, however it was a salad. Panzanellas include bread to soak up the juices of the dish, but these hunks of bread were croutons and soaked up nothing. This was actually my favorite dish, but was wrongly advertised and would have been even better if the bread had remained soft or soaked up more vinaigrette. The main dishes included a sun-choke and hangar steak entree with a beautiful blue cheese butter (may have been another strong cheese, but bleu came to mind as I tasted), as well as the house bratwurst. The steak was bland, not salted. I sent this dish back. The bratwurst while good, was served with a lil sautéed onion and nothing else. It needed a liquid/sauce/acid. We had to request mustard for which it took a "my bratwurst is cold now" amount of time to get. The hardest part about this experience was the time it took. While the service people were excellent (my glass never fell below 3/4ths full) it was just a very long time between dishes. This may be the experience Mordecai wishes to give. Very leisure, but it's not what most of us have come to expect. I will be back because the bones of this place are rock solid. I want to eat the food again because it's inventive and on the cusp of greatness. Give this place its first Chicago summer and it will be the best place on that block. read more

4.5 Stars! We enjoyed our dinner here on Friday evening! For a starter we had the duck and chicken pate, which was served with toast points. This was simply delicious! Loved it! We moved on to the entrees of hangar steak for my partner while I had the Mordecai burger. I personally did not care for the hangar steak, which my partner thought was pretty good. The burger was awesome and just what I wanted for the evening. For dessert, we indulged on the Cracker Jack Donut! Damn! It was so good!!! That alone stole the show! Our service from our waitress to the supporting staff was amazing! We simply loved our waitress and everyone! Everyone was so attentive to our needs. It was a nice touch when the manager of the house came around to see how things were. A lot of places don't do that. Mordecai raised the bar! So why the 4.5-instead of straight up 5? I am not sure if this is a trend, but this establishment only had one restroom in house for both men and women--one single solitary restroom! That is obnoxious to me. I will say that since this is part of the Hotel Zachary, there are other restrooms throughout the building, but this is not marked, and it is a bit inconvenient to say the least.
