Had dinner here last night with a group of 5. We got the cheese curds, bread plate, three pasta dishes (pesto, gnocchi, spicy rigatoni, mushroom pappardelle), the branzino, and three of the sides (broccolini with romesco, polenta, fries, cider, glazed carrots). Not a single miss. The gnocchi were the most delicate I've ever had, and the branzino had the most amazing crispy skin while the fish stayed tender. We visited Mordecai a month after their opening. We had made a reservation for the upstairs patio, but there was an issue on their end. The manager was able to fix the issue and we were seated. The view over Wrigley was awesome. We had dedicated and detailed service. I've never had my water refilled so many times throughout a meal. I ordered a whiskey sour and was informed that all cocktails made on the second floor are poured into one-of-a-kind vintage glasses. They make a good whiskey sour but it lacked in quantity. Every single food dish we ordered was amazing. Creative and inspiring dishes that are Instagram worthy! The salad with asparagus was tasty, but I don't recommend ordering it as a main course because it won't fill you. The asparagus was perfectly cooked and tender. I loved my main course: the pappardelle! The presentation was beautiful and tasted incredible. I loved the aeriated parmesan. The Moroccan entrée was a table favorite. The spice slowly grew in your mouth and was so flavorful. We ordered the panna cotta for dessert. You must order it! It was light and creamy and tangy from the passion fruit. My sister is gluten intolerant and the waiter brought her a gluten free cookie for dessert. We all had some because it was so good. It was crunchy, chocolatey, and had a coffee flavor. We stopped in at 6 on a Thursday (no home cubs game) and it was about 1/3 full. We sat right down at the bar. Started with a champagne cup (cava deliciousness) and the peerless leader (dangerously smooth whiskey cocktail). Our server/bartender, Ryan, was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and knows so much about whiskey! Ask any questions you may have, you're very likely to get an answer. We started with the cheese curds and octopus. Not to be that person, but my dining partner and I have been all over the world and this is the best octopus we've ever had! So tender. Cooked perfectly. We moved on to the porchetta and agnolotti. Street porchetta, bougie porchetta, I love it all. Agnolotti was perfectly balanced, topped with a bunch of weird shit that just really goes together well. Although we WAY over-ordered, we also had the sunflower zeppole dessert. Not something I would normally choose, but it was recommended by our bartender and it was perfectly sweet, like little lemon ginger donuts. read more

With that said, they might offer too many options because I was there one time and it took the bartender over 5 minutes to find a bottle because the wall is so intricate and their offerings are so vast. This might have been the best overall dining experience I've had in the decade I've been in Chicago. That it happened in Wrigleyville was as shocking as you'd think. Mordecai's vintage cocktail list is absolutely insane. Pricey but off the charts amazing. We started with a high and outside, which featured Scotch from the 1970s and bitters from the 1950s. The manager actually took the time to tell us about how he sourced these particular ingredients and how much time he spends looking for rare and vintage spirits. Incredible. My wife went with a hot corner from the regular cocktail list which was one of the best tequila drinks I've ever tasted. The food -- I'd order a bunch of small plates first and a larger plate to share. The truffled chicken nuggets with lavender honey mustard were incredible as was the wagyu beef tartare. I would snack on the crackers that came with the wagyu beef tartare alone of I could. Our steak frites were fantastic as a main course. Steak and fries both cooked perfectly. Service was incredible, as the staff seemed genuinely happy to be back. Plus, hard to beat the view of Wrigley across the street. Great for a date night or if you're looking to have a higher end cocktail evening with friends. Mordecai was one of those rare dining experiences where when the check came, we felt like we had gotten our money's worth and then some. Drink review only Went to Mordecai with friends a couple Saturdays ago for drinks. Been meaning to try it since it opened in the Hotel Zachary last year. High quality cocktails and craft beer in Wrigleyville?! Sure enough, the bar program is outstanding. I had the Old World and my one friend got a couple of the Bills in Foul. Drinks were strong and very well made; we really enjoyed them! I was also impressed by the local breweries they had on tap, including Maplewood, Metropolitan and Lo Rez. Prices are pretty high across the board. Expect $15 for cocktails and $8-9 for craft beer. The cocktails justified the price whereas I felt the beer was too much. Service was fine, nothing to write home about. I would definitely come back! Mordecai is a nice change of pace right across from Wrigley Field. read more

The space is beautiful here, definitely sit at the bar! I think maybe we ordered the wrong items and it was kind of a let down but I will go back for sure. Started with Crab Puff... it was just so so.. like a big Crab Rangoon in a bowl (Skip) Ordered the double burger, not being picky but for $16 this wich shouldn't have had a slice of tomato where the prep cook took out the core.. y'all gotta throw that out! Also a piece of dirty butter lettuce that I immediately took off the burger. The black garlic aioli doesn't work at all with the burger or with the fries, terrible. The other entree was the Black Truffle Ricotta Agnolotti and it was outstanding they said! Prices are pretty steep but just remember you're in a hotel so expect to take a hit. Campanelle pasta - delicious, but the portion was too small!!! Especially for the price!! $$ The fish and chips were also good, the flavor of the chips seemingly salt and vinegar? The Shishito peppers are a favorite for me! Loved my drinks; the cherry ice-y and The Old Mill! The place is slightly confusing, as there is an upstairs and downstairs but the only sign shows for the first floor. We made reservations, and after being seated we inquired further, and were told that if we had asked, we could have been seated upstairs where it is quieter. We obviously didn't know this. The downstairs wasn't too loud, until 8pm and the music was blasting.... at a fine dining place.. Didn't love that but now I know better. I do look forward to my next experience! read more

On an away game day late Sunday afternoon I originally had a hankering for Big Star, but the bar seats were all taken so I hopped down a couple doors to Mordecai and glad I did! I really like the space, it's not too big and the design elements are quite cool and stylish. We experienced excellent service from the bartenders and it was a very nice touch that the manager stopped by to make sure we were enjoying our drinks. The two cocktails we had were great, nice balanced flavor and good presentation. We had the Peerless Leader and the Royal Rescuer. For snacks we had the beet tartar which was exceptional. Add a little more and serve a hunk of bread on the side and you would have a substantive meatless meal. I craved a sweet and had the strawberry rhubarb crumble, which was a bowlful of deliciousness (although maybe a little shortcake or shortbread on the bottom would have helped round it out a bit by cutting the sweetness). I'm so happy to have Mordecai close by. It definitely adds an elevated experience to Wriglyeville. read more

The service here was just a notch higher than the McDonalds next door. We waited at least 25 min for our entree. I ordered the 1/2 roasted chicken which was moist but lacking accoutrements. And my husband ordered the mussels which he said were good but swimming in their sauce with little to soak it up with (can the man get a spoon?). The manager stopped by to apologize for the long wait time for our food, and we told him it was OK, but as the wait time dragged for everything (my husband ordered a drink and had 3 table touches by staff before he actually got that drink) we grew more and more annoyed. That made it a less than ideal experience. The ambience is nice, but not nice enough to justify the prices ($26 for 1/2 chicken and a few pieces of broccoli and potatoes?). If anything, I would suggest going here to belly up to the bar. The two cocktails we had were great (the gin drink with egg white and the mezcal/scotch drink) so I would come back to explore that menu more, if I had no budget concerns...at $13 a pop. If you want a date night at a nice place with good food and good service in this area, go a few blocks west to Ella Elli. read more

I really wanted to like this place. The decor here is lounge-like, and I like a lounge environment. Mordecai is located in a space adjacent and enclosed in Hotel Zachary, a SPG (Starwood) Tribute Portfolio hotel that just opened a few months back. The menu is simple, elegant, and polished. The staff are friendly and nice (except for my server, which makes Mordecai lose a star). The food was exceptional, though extremely small in portion size. You'll finish an entree in 2 minutes. No joke. Food: 4/5 I wasn't feeling extremely hungry, so I was thinking of a salad and a moderate entree that I could eat and not feel too full on. I opted for an appetizer salad and a pasta dish: the Arugula Pappardelle. The Pappardelle is hands down one of the best pasta dishes I've had, even when compared to those found in Italian restaurants. Only it took me a few bites to finish it (about 2 minutes). I dug in, scooped it up with my fork, and three bites later, I was done. The dish itself looks deceiving, as the plate is large and round, and the pasta cream covers a big portion of the plate. Again, very delicious, although I wish there were more of it. Environment: 5/5 I really liked it here. Even though I sat near the front door, the space had an upscale cocktail lounge feel to it. The doors were made of some stitched wood that looked very artsy, and the bar area was on two levels (though I didn't get to experience the 2nd floor). This would be a great place to stop by after a Cubs game or even for drinks after work. Service: 2/5 I was greeted by a very friendly gentleman (possibly one of the managers) who offered me a glass of water. He was amazing and I could feel that the night would go well. Unfortunately the excellent service ended there when I met my server. She was either having a bad day or was new on the job, or seemed like she didn't want to be at work. Either way, she made me depressed to eat there, and, well, I can't think of the last time I was depressed to eat anywhere or went on Yelp to write about it. When I finished my pasta, she came by and I remarked to her that it was delicious but thought that the portion size was a little too small. Her reaction? She stares me down with the stoniest face I've seen from a server and says "I don't think so." I had to pause for a moment and look at her to see if she was trying to insult me, so we shared an awkward silence staring at each other for 15 seconds. In my mind I was thinking "Did you really just say that?" but I was at a loss of words. Later, I still left her a 20% tip just because I felt sorry for her depressed state. I know we all have our bad days, but her silent cold stare was a little beyond bad day mode. This would probably have been a four star review instead. Bottom Line Get the Arugula Pappardelle. You won't be disappointed. Only get two orders, unless you're planning to eat two bites. I didn't order any cocktails but I would try again if I'm in the area. read more

Some friends asked to meet here and with all the great neighborhood restaurant options, I had my doubts about a spot in a hotel across from Wrigley. It was fantastic. We sat in a booth in the front open window so it felt like we were outdoors. There was an orchestra playing in the park across the street, great people watching. Our waiter (can't remember his name, but he was a former school teacher) was terrific, just the right mix of personal and professional. He really knew his stuff, made spot-on recommendations. Decided to take clients that flew in from LA here for lunch before the Cubs game today thinking the experience would more upscale than most places because of the chef. Not a good start. The hostess could not seat us upstairs which was unfortunate. It's difficult to have a conversation in the bar area. She said all we can do is "try to accommodate you". Not what you want to hear when with clients ( she didn't seem to really care either) Our waiter got us drinks and then vanished. Had to flag another waitress to place our lunch order. Food was okay-good. So, the overall experience was average just like most other Wrigley Restaurant/Bars which is fine if you are just hanging out with friends. The "Peerless Leader" is well named cause this leads the pack as far as cocktails go, it's in the lead. ( yeah I realized I used the word lead three times in a sentence why are you still reading this far?) We ordered the oysters and I'm not a biggie or Tupac fan but I'm partial to east coast but these oysters were something else and brought the brine. We had a great dinner starting with a delicious Roasted Bone Marrow appetizer. Yummy. Their Black Truffle Ricotta Agnolotti was outstanding. The flavors were mouthwatering and oh the truffles! My Mordecai burger was perfectly cooked medium rare just the way I like it with fresh, crispy fries. However I disliked the dark maroon sauce that accompanied their fries which had an odd salty flavor and had to ask for ketchup. They should stick with regular ketchup which goes best with fries. Sometimes simple is best. We loved their cheese curds which were an accidental bonus from the kitchen. The bartender mixed delicious Gin Rickety and Pisco Sour cocktails. Service was friendly and fast. The restaurant is small, but has lovely atmosphere. read more

Really enjoyed our first visit to Mordecai. There's something exciting and unique about having gourmet drinks in a classy bar outside of Wrigley Field on a game day. The Cubs game was on the TVs at the bar and with the windows open you felt like you were part of the scene- but this was no sloppy Wrigleyville sports dive. This place is high end, somewhere for a date night instead of a bachelor party. Interior was classy. Drinks were excellent. Food was good (and unique). The food prices were very high. After getting appetizers that were delicious but smaller than you'd hope for given the price, we decided not to eat dinner here and instead got tacos down the block. If it was a date night we would have stayed and splurged, but we were just checking out somewhere new. We'll definitely be back often for drinks, and will probably come here for a nice dinner to celebrate an occasion at some point. I am sure it will be a good one. read more

Arrived a little early for our reservation so had a beer at the bar. They have a selection of draft and canned beer. They were mostly craft beers that I had never heard of. The two I had were good. The cooling mechanism on the draft beers was not working so did not get to try any of them We were seated when our friends arrived. I thought I would play it safe and order the burger. It was very good and came with fries. I ordered the strawberry rhubarb desert which was excellent. The wait staff was excellent. They were very attentive and helpful. The decor is a little austere modern. They have the heaviest chairs and bar stools I think I have ever encountered. The one bathroom is a little problematic after a Cubs game. A little pricey. $16 for hamburger and fries. Can beer $6-8. Draft beer $9. Cocktails $13-16 Overall it was okay. Just didn't grab me. read more

I'm still really surprised by how bad this place was. My husband and I live in the neighborhood and we were excited for a new brunch spot; unfortunately this place is not making the list. We had a reservation for 11 am, right when they open. I was disappointed with the lack of options on the menu but the place is supposed to be nice so I figured that if they only have 10 or so brunch dishes they all must be good right? Nope nope and nope. My first issue was with ordering. I placed an order for the quiche of the day and asked if it'd be possible to have a side of hashbrowns. They don't list any sides on the menu but I figured it'd be worth checking; and I was happy to pay whatever the additional cost would be. The server was super friendly and said she'd ask the chef. Several minutes later she returned and had a long explanation about why that wasn't possible. I was irritated that the chef sent her out there with this big explanation like I'd made some highly unacceptable request. A simple "no" or those only come with "x" would've been fine. The server seemed a little frazzled and I got the impression she had just been chewed out by the chef. That really made me uncomfortable (I could be wrong about this but that's the vibe I got). The next issue was just how long the food took. Our meal finally came out at 11:35 am. I don't think 35 min is a horrible amount of time to wait per se but the restaurant was basically empty (there were maybe 10-12 people there total). While we were waiting we had a mediocre latte and a quarter can of pepsi. Yes you read that as a quarter can. They literally charge $4 to pour a quarter can of pepsi in a skinny glass and do not give you the rest of the can. I get that they're attempting to be fancy but this just came off as tone deaf. The last issue was the food. Dear god. I don't know how it's possible to be both overstated and under-salted but they've accomplished that here. The quiche crust a was a flavorless mush. It tasted like compressed flour. The quiche itself was so overstated I'm not sure how it made the menu. It was supposed to feature butternut squash, kale, and blue cheese. Instead it had a lobe of squash, no kale, and basically a years supply of blue cheese. It was easily the most heavy handed dish I've had in years. My husband's meal was awful too. He ordered a Pastrami Hash which was really like mauled Pastrami jerky and undercooked new potatoes. Neither of us finished. I think the front of house staff could tell we were annoyed and they'd tried to make it up by having the chef send out one of those ever elusive hashbrowns. To be honest, I was more annoyed that they sent it out at that point. Like, either you have a limited quantity or you don't. I honeslty wasn't in the mood for 4 explanations about it. I just wanted to enjoy my husband's company. To be fair, the front of house staff were all friendly and they tried to help I was just too annoyed to care at that point. What really takes the cake though is this ridiculous "handmade" hashbrown mass. It straight up looks like two McDonald's hash browns glued together. There is nothing remotely special about it. It wasn't even crisp. I honestly laughed when I saw the dumb thing. This whole place is trying to be way fancier than it is. Throw a dart on a Chicago map and you'll find a better meal than this. I mean...I should've know that a place trying to do haute cuisine in Wrigley would be crap. I think it's designed to trick suburban tourists into thinking they've stumbled into a hot, Chicago restaurant. Anyway, long story short, this place is awful. I don't mind paying a premium for brunch but $55 (no alcohol) is insane for a meal that looks like McDonalds and Lula cafe had a disappointing child. read more

For food, we had ordered the classic steak and frites, smoked half chicken and for dessert their crackerjack beignets. The steak was perfectly medium rare and melted in your mouth, the frites we perfectly fried and had a delicious herb coating on them. The chicken was so smokey that to me it almost tasted like fresh smoked turkey but still retained all of its moisture. Finally the crackerjack beignets (as the beginning part of the name implies)....was like crack! It was a perfect blend of sweet, salty and caramel, and the beignets were the texture between a normal beignet and a hush-puppy and were delicious. I had also gotten a Dark and Stormy cocktail using specialized rum and Aperol, and it was dangerously delicious. My one complaint was that it is a bit expensive but very much worth the experience.
