Upon walking in the place, you are greeted with a coffee roasting machine that is humming away doing its magic on some Sumatran beans (they roast their beans in-house daily). The staff are always super friendly and the place is my number one pick (pun intended) for a coffee while shopping at Westfield or when a caffeine hit is needed before boarding a bus to Bronte. The place itself is nicely decorated with comfy lounge style chairs if you feel like having a pastry or sandwich with your beverage (yep they'll satisfy mild hunger pangs too). To add to the atmosphere, the walls are adorned with coffee information and shots of the owner in action preparing syphon coffee and other various coffee related acts. Thankfully it was part of quite abundant yet lacklustre affogato, which for $5 in Bondi Junction was quite reasonable. The atmosphere is awesome despite being small and tucked up in a sidestreet that you wouldn't choose to walk down on unless you knew this place was there. The staff is friendly and the service fast. The takeaway here: Sydney doesn't cater to Italians and other espresso drinkers. This place is no exception but it's quite a nice and cheap alternative to the thousands of coffee shops that already exist.

There's something a little bit secretive about The Little Marionette…read more It would be easy to mistake the Annandale cafe for an empty shopfront or an abandoned house. In fact, with no signage on the building, you could walk straight past without even registering it was there. That is, if it weren't for the smell of coffee beans wafting through the windows and the throngs of milling hipsters spilling onto the footpath. Once you step your way through the dogs and fixie bicycles leaning against signposts, the staff greet you with a laidback "Hey", despite how busy they must be. The sky blue mural on the roof (complete with clouds) gives the impression that this tiny shoe-box of a cafe is far more expansive than in reality, and indeed it is when compared to its hole-in-the-wall predecessor in Balmain. There's a floor to ceiling bookshelf stacked with Little Golden Books, travel guides and encyclopedias, and if you lift the right book the entire wall revolves revealing a hidden second room packed with giant green leather couches. Whilst moose heads are no longer mounted on the walls, you still get the feeling that you've stumbled into a hunter's trophy room to discuss covert matters over cuban cigars. Local indie artists trickle through the stereo and, it seems, the same indie artists are squatting on the arms of the couches, knocking back one little coffee after another. In the roasting room out the back stacks of hessian bags are being emptied into the giant copper roaster by a couple of guys in flannelette shirts, rolled up jeans and caps akin to those your grandad wore, and the smell of the roasting beans is just as sweet and warming as the coffee itself. With beans from Africa, Indonesia and South America, you take your pick between house blends and a daily differing bean (today it's a Honduras). The coffee is a bit hit and miss depending on who's pulling the strings, but even at its worst it's still a good eight out of ten (it's a ten plus the rest of the time). So, get in on the secret. Be mysterious and important. Pull the fire stoker and sneak away to the hidden room, order your second coffee and discuss world events (or last night's Game of Thrones episode) in a hushed voice.

Perfect for a coffee or a bite to eat, pre or post beach visit. This cosy cafe is popular with locals and visitors alike. Serving the ever popular Campos Coffee with Single origin varieties from Guatamala and Columbia. The staff are very friendly, on first name basis with many visitors and chatting to the customers as they wait for their take away coffees. The menu caters to people wanting to dine in or those in a rush after a quick bite on the run. There are a range of cookies, cakes and sandwiches. There are all day breakfast options including chia, pudding and granola. We ordered ricotta on toast. Served on sour dough from brasserie bread with cinnamon and honey on top, simple and tasty. The also do a range of healthy bowl options. We ordered the tuna bowl. The flavour was nice, the bowl made with a mix of quinoa, almonds, sunflower seeds carrot kale and tuna all mixed together with two eggs on top. I called them and gave them the benefit of the doubt it was a genuine error. They asked me to physically come back to the store for the refund. I've never been treated so poorly but a cafe or any business. They made me wait, and said they were too busy to deal with my request. I had to articulate (loudly) that I'm waiting on their error. They then blamed me three times for telling them the wrong date and amount and they can't confirm. Once the charge was found they refused to refund the money because they couldn't confirm it was me. The Cafe Manager was rude, defensive and aggressive. I left upset and embarrassed by the whole scenario. They have no email to communicate. I will have to escalate to the Ombudsman, because they've my money and refused to refund. I'm most upset because they've ruined my Saturday mornings where I go to music class with my little girl and we have a babyccino and coffee after.
