Booked an appointment online but would have been seen 40 minutes earlier (I was 20 minutes early,…read morewas ultimately seen 20 minutes after the time I booked) if I had just walked in, because all online appointments go to 1 person. 2 walk ins seen before me. Very bizarre policy. While waiting, I had to listen to him discuss with the customer before me how great a business person Trump is, then when I was in the chair he decided to rant about everything from Covid to Juneteenth to the increasing Dominican population in Medford, the decreasing white population in Medford, trans high schoolers, and probably some stuff I've forgotten. It was like being subjected to some brainrotted Facebook feed. I'm all for smart discussion about stuff people don't agree about but I spent most of the time trying to steer the conversation elsewhere because it was clear none of that was in the cards. Haircut was ok. Won't be returning.

I've debated sharing this for a while, but a recent event reminded me why silence isn't an option…read more A few years ago at The Men's Room in Medford, I witnessed something that still sits heavy with me. The shop was loud and typical for a Saturday morning--until a Black mother walked in with her two sons. The room went completely silent. For several minutes, the atmosphere shifted from welcoming to hostile through nothing but pointed silence and 'shifting eyes.' It was so palpable that the mother eventually bolted out of the shop with her children. The moment they cleared the door, the 'raucous' energy returned as if nothing had happened. It took me leaving the shop to fully process what I'd seen: a room full of people who collectively made a family feel unwelcome. Professional craftsmanship should be about service and community, but that day, it was used to exclude. I'm sharing this now because honesty matters, and no one should be made to feel like a ghost in a public business

I started coming to The Shop ever since CJ moved over. Once you find that perfect barber, you…read morefollow them wherever they go. I live on the South Shore, but I drive up to Somerville just to see CJ! CJ is perceptive to both the client's desires and also what will look good for each person. He clearly communicates what he plans to do, and he will pause to confirm your approval before continuing if it's a new look for you. This is THE most important quality in a barber, because I might have an idea for my haircut/beard trim in my mind, but the barber may see it differently. And now, since I completely trust CJ's judgement, I could walk in and say "Do whatever you want" and I wouldn't worry at all. It was CJ's judgement that led to my current beard style, and looking back it was obviously the right choice. If you need a new barber and don't know where to go, book CJ at either of The Shop locations. I've been going to CJ for years, so the move to The Shop was a no-brainer. Now I have a kid, and CJ cuts his hair, too - super convenient to get both done with one trip. My kid already had a few haircuts done before going to CJ, and CJ is amazing with kids. All the barbers in the place are respectful when we're there - they even sometimes change the music playlist to be kid-friendly, which is an awareness I really appreciate as a parent. The place is clean and welcoming, and the staff are efficient. Street parking is easy enough for the amount of time a haircut would take. I highly recommend CJ and 968 The Shop!

He took time to understand as it was my first time and definitely tried his best to accommodate and explain the pros and cons before he cut.
