I had a collection of National Geographic Magazines in beautiful condition that was over 30 years old, and could find no one to take them. I hated the thought of having to destroy them. I called them after many days of trying to find someone to take them, and they agreed to take them in and use some in there store and the rest in the library. I was so happy that they received a home where they would be appreciated for the incredible works that they are. I cannot thank them enough for being so caring and helpful. But POOR policy on collecting books. These people constantly buy and cram their stacks with the latest trash fiction until shelves are filled with it. Are you krazy for Koontz? Ga-ga for Grisham? Here's your place... and plenty more! Patterson, Steele, Stephen King, Toni Morrison -- every by-the numbers formula book-of-the-week is here --- hundreds of 'em. (And no end in sight.)This library desperately needs more creative & intelligent acquisitions, like economics, history, self-help, social issues, current thought and commentaries, etc etc. Also cries out for more serious periodicals. (The truth is, the problem is bigger than just Morgade -- probably the entire Martin County system hews to the whole trash-fic policy. As for periodicals, they evidently are afraid to subscribe to any mag that actually publishes an opinion.) *sigh* The Martin county libraries are run by nice people, but I do wish they'd be more thoughtful and comprehensive in their acquisitions.

Not a huge library by any means, but I'm usually able to browse the stacks and find something interesting to read. I love the self-service checkout process. Book checkouts are two weeks. You can renew books online (up to 5 times, I believe), which is very handy. There are computers available for public use, and they always seem to be full of happy library goers. Printers and Wi-Fi too. Music downloads. Audio- and e-books. After-hours book drop. Meeting rooms available for rent. Plenty of parking. Friendly staff. Always clean and organized.

After repeated calls to Social Security at a variety of phone numbers…read morefound on line, in letters written to me by Social Security and in my on line Social Security account and being on the phone on hold for an hour to two hours at a time over a period of a week, I finally drive over an hour to the local Port St. Lucie office. I needed to update my address and the account on line would not permit me to do that. I then found that my Social Security benefits were suspended for failing to update my address. Once I arrived at the Port St. Lucie office I found a security guard at the door handing out a number to call to make an appointment. No appointments could be made in person. The telephone number handed out is not the phone number on the website. After three disconnected calls to that number I was advised by the security guard that the phone automatically disconnects with no notice if a SS rep is not available within 17 minutes. I called the number 866-366-1627 one lat time before leaving the vestibule of the So Ila Security Office and was finally connected at 16 minutes out. I have no complaint about the social security representative. The rep resolved my issue and updated my address. Improvement MUST be made in representative availability and communication. So frustrating. Had I not gone on line to check my account I would not have known that my social security benefits had been suspended. The benefits are how I pay for Medicare so I could have also lost my Medicare benefits.

House of Seven Gables is a historic home turned visitors center in Ft. Pierce. It was built in…read more1905. In 1943 it was a house of prostitution frequented by servicemen during WWII. In 1987 it was sold at auction and used as a taxidermy studio. In 1997 the house was donated to the city of Fort Pierce and moved to its present location on June 31, 1998. In 2000 the St. Lucie Chamber of Commerce opened the house as a visitor's center providing information about things to do in the area and places to stay and eat at. The volunteers who work here answer visitors questions and also give free tours of the house. If you are in the area it is worth a stop especially since the A. E. Backus Museum and Gallery and Manatee Observation and Education Center are located on either side of the House of Seven Gables.

This site is across the parking lot from the Manatee Observation and Education Center in Ft. Pierce. So, after finishing at the Manatee Center we made the mandatory pilgrimage across the parking lot in search of more travel literature. As visitor centers go, this one was clean, bright and staffed by a couple of very pleasant and helpful ladies. It was a bit light in the area of available travel related literature. Still worth the stop.

Zora Neale Hurston (January 7, 1891 - January 28, 1960) was an African-American Harlem Renaissance…read moreauthor, folklorist, anthropologist, story teller, dramatist, and filmmaker. She sought to portray the experience and prejudice faced by African Americans in the early 20th century American South. Her most famous novel is Their Eyes Were Watching God which was published in 1937. She also wrote more than 50 short stories, plays, and essays. Hurston was born in Notasulga, Alabama, grew up in Eatonville, Florida, and spent the last two years of her life in Fort Pierce. She passed away in a St. Lucie welfare home after suffering a stroke. She is buried in the Garden of Heavenly Rest. She was largely unrecognized during her lifetime and came to prominence in the 1970's. The Zora Neal Hurston Branch Library was named for the author and is the first stop on the the Zora Neale Hurston Dust Tracks Heritage Trail, a series of 8 stops that were important in the life of Zora Neal Hurston during her time in Fort Pierce. Dust Tracks on a Road is the name of Zora Neal Hurston's autobiography. There is a large kiosk about Hurston outside of the front of the library. The library has a large resource of audio and visual material related to Zora Neal Hurston. On the walls of the library hang Ade Rossman's "Zora Art Series," a series of paintings that were commissioned in 2006 by the St. Lucie County Cultural Affairs Department. The library hosts lectures about topics relating to Hurston. The library also has other materials not related to Hurston that one would expect to find at a public library.

The soup de jour was a Tomato Purée, which was very good, the Cheddar Bacon Biscuits were delicious and the Truffle Caviar Deviled Eggs were amazing. Our entree was a 10 oz Wagyu Sirloin which was good, though a little tasteless. And the Crème Brûlée was outstanding. Service was excellent, prices are reasonable and the experience was fabulous. Upstairs there is a fabulous "Speak Easy" and the is also outside seating and a bar. If you are local, this will become your new favorite restaurant and if you are visiting the Treasure Coast, this is a must visit restaurant.
