She sought to portray the experience and prejudice faced by African Americans in the early 20th century American South. Her most famous novel is Their Eyes Were Watching God which was published in 1937. She also wrote more than 50 short stories, plays, and essays. Hurston was born in Notasulga, Alabama, grew up in Eatonville, Florida, and spent the last two years of her life in Fort Pierce. She passed away in a St. Lucie welfare home after suffering a stroke. She is buried in the Garden of Heavenly Rest. She was largely unrecognized during her lifetime and came to prominence in the 1970's. The Zora Neal Hurston Branch Library was named for the author and is the first stop on the the Zora Neale Hurston Dust Tracks Heritage Trail, a series of 8 stops that were important in the life of Zora Neal Hurston during her time in Fort Pierce. Dust Tracks on a Road is the name of Zora Neal Hurston's autobiography. There is a large kiosk about Hurston outside of the front of the library. The library has a large resource of audio and visual material related to Zora Neal Hurston. On the walls of the library hang Ade Rossman's "Zora Art Series," a series of paintings that were commissioned in 2006 by the St. Lucie County Cultural Affairs Department. The library hosts lectures about topics relating to Hurston. The library also has other materials not related to Hurston that one would expect to find at a public library.

They have a few private rooms that you can take test in or take meetings in in. I was able to get a private room while I was here, but it did take a while because all of them were occupied, but we finally said something to one of the workers and he was able to help us get a room really quickly. It seems like an interesting set up where some people just stay in there for a very long time watching shows or something. So we were grateful that we were able to get a room. They also had a free seed Library that you could get seats from so I took a few and I'm so excited that some of them are already growing in my garden. Definitely a great library just to do some work and get stuff done.

This is a great little library! Friendly staff, central location…read more Not as small as the Tequesta branch, but definitely smaller than Palm Beach Gardens. The children's section is nicely laid out and a decent size, with plenty of windows and light, and a large, adjacent activity room. I've enjoyed the children's classes I've attended; I can't believe how many they have scheduled for this fall! Everything is cozy and easy to find, with computer areas tucked away in the back. The used book area is a cozy corner where treasures can be found; I've picked up author-signed books and coffee table art books here.
