Not sure I could've picked a more ideal time to visit a new-to-me farmers market for the first time: the dead of winter during a global health crisis. I guess I always associate farmers markets with summer, cool to know they exist in winter too! It's only though ordering some goods from Root Baking to pick up that I discovered this organic weekly market. Morningside Farmers Market was set up in the parking lot of a tiny strip mall home to a running store. Parking in the neighborhood wasn't difficult at all. There were to my count, about eight vendor tents set up and two of them were produce-focused.  At the risk of sounding like a Portlandia character, I snagged some absolutely gorgeous radicchio from Diamond Hill and striking purple sweet potatoes from Sparta Gardens. The radicchio had leaves the hue of iceberg lettuce but they were speckled with magenta dots. Beautiful! And the sweet potatoes were deep purple both outside and inside!  You can place orders with Root a few days ahead of time to pick up. They also have some extra treats to choose from. The multigrain and sesame semolina breads were delightful and made excellent slices for sandwiches. For sweet stuff, their chocolate croissants can't be beat. Seriously.   Besides bread and veggies, other tents were hawking eggs, meats, honey, chocolate, and grains. Since the market wasn't too crowded, shoppers kept their distances, and everyone was wearing masks. The market is open from 8-11:30 AM Saturdays though some things were sold out already before I arrived. I'm glad I got to explore this cozy farmers market and definitely plan to return, hopefully on a warmer morning! ***NOTE: This market has moved to a new location. It is nice to have local fruits and vegetables and the Strawberries were especially good this spring. I would like to try the baked goods present but there is always quite a line of bread enthusiasts (not the merchants fault and they do have a actual shop nearby). We dropped off the dogs in the morning in Decatur and wanted to get some baguettes from Alon's. As we were walking out we saw a ton of tents set up just across the street. I remember seeing a sign advertising the Morningside Farmer's Market and made the connection. In the dead of winter here in Atlanta, this little place reminds us that it doesn't necessarily have to be warm to have tasty foods. They have a couple of vendors for fresh grown produce. Lots of carrots this time of year but they had a lot of other great greens as well. We had a lot of fresh produce in the fridge so we came for the views. Other vendors today were selling chicken, pork and beef as well. All different types of cuts which I think depends on what they have week to week and what time of day you drop by. By 11AM, they had sold out of most of their items. There were two other vendors that I thought were worth noting including a local honey vendor. They have honey collected from various neighborhoods in Atlanta (cool!) all with a slightly different taste. We got some honey from the Virginia Highlands and that really help light up some of the foods that we cooked with. We also dropped by a vendor that was selling baked goods and picked up a garlic sourdough loaf. We made sandwiches that evening and it was pretty incredible. A well baked bread indeed! You can either park across the street, on the street or walk from the local neighborhoods. Despite it being a little chilly outside, there were a lot of people coming through and buying up the goods which was great to see. I really enjoy seeing these local small businesses flourish. I believe this Farmer's Market occurs every Saturday morning throughout the year. Each vendor can take cash, credit card or both. It all depends. If you are in the area on a Saturday or looking to make some food using local produce, stop by this farmer's market! read more

Since my last review about this market sucked ass, I wanted to update you in case you have never made it to a Saturday at Morningside Market. This is one of the top local farmers markets in Atlanta in my opinion. It is open Saturdays morning year round, which is rare in the Atlanta local market scene. All vendors have to sell organic products and they all have to be local. They have a mix of veggies, eggs, fruits, meats, flowers, granola, honey, and handmade items. There is always good music and the market is always bumping.. plus you can walk across the street and grab some delicious food from Alon's after you do your shopping. The chefs demos are always packed so you are lucky if you get a bite, unlike the green market at Piedmont, but you still will walk away with some new techniques and a tasty recipe. Go now! read more

The only reason I will get out of bed at 6:30 am on a Saturday is to find what delectable goodies await my week's meals from Morningside. The people are great who attend and sell. Our first stop is always Magnolia Bread's stand to get our bread for the week- we usually do one loaf of something sourdough: whole wheat or plain. We've had their garlic loaf before and I think a few others which I can't remember. This farmer's market is great because they email what the farmer's expect to have every week so you can go knowing what to sniff out and what your week's menus are going to look like. This is the only place we get our fresh produce unless they have something else not offered here at Piedmont Park's Green Market; we hit both on bike- Morningside then green. It is nice to have your money stay within the community and support those who have a passion for farming. Get up early for the best stuff. Things like Strawberries (the best in the city are right here!! Not even Whole Foods has them this good!!) go fast so you better be prepared to get up early, early to beat the crowd. Pick up a drink, coffee, at the market or head across the street to Alon's for more good eats and yums to drink. If you like Dynamic Dish you may catch the owner/chef perusing here as well for Saturday's lunch and dinner. All I have to say is thank god for Morningside and Dynamic Dish for making our eat local dreams come true in so many colors and varieties. read more

I've been to all the area farmers markets, and Morningside Farmers Market is my favorite. I've been a customer for more than 10 years, going every Saturday. The produce is local, fresh, and grown by the farmers who are at the market. What I love about Morningside Farmers Market: - It's the first and only farmers market in Atlanta that requires all produce to be certified organic. This is the farmers market where people who are serious about their vegetables go to get their produce for the week. - It's a small intimate farmers market, where you can get to know the people who produce the food you eat. I like being able to get to know the farmers who grow the vegetables I eat. It is very clear to me how dedicated they are to growing clean food and taking care of the soil. I trust them to feed me clean food. - I love that the produce I buy was just harvested from the farm. Unlike conventional grocery stores, vegetables don't have to go a week or two in transport and sitting on shelves. They were picked shortly before the Saturday market. They are as fresh as you can get unless you grow your own garden, and they last all week in my refrigerator crisper. - Unlike many other farmers markets, Morningside Farmers Market is open every Saturday 52 weeks a year. I eat every week, so I like that I can go to Morningside Farmers Market every Saturday. - A friendly place to go on Saturday morning. The farmers and customers are all so nice and friendly. I see a lot of the same people each week. There's a sense of community that is wonderful. Makes my day better. read more

I love coming here on Saturday mornings. The variety of food is fresh, local, & organic. They have a large variety of lots of veggies, greens, and herbs and they only have fruit/berries when they are in season. The veggies are very fairly priced but the eggs are usually $6 a dozen. There is also usually a bread stand and a soap stand (random). The bread runs around $6 a loaf and tastes phenominal. **Note: They dont use any preservatives in the bread so it goes bad much faster than store bought bread. So make sure you freeze the amount that you wont use in the first 3-4 days. They have chef demonstrations from organic restaurants. The last one I saw was a chef from Serenbe and she made some delicious brocolli soup. This place is also very dog friendly. I usually bring my dog and he loves to sniff the other dogs and get attention from the kids. I wish they were open more than just Saturday mornings. But it is definitely worth it to wake up early. read more

Morningside Farmer's Market (MFM) is The Best farmer's market for serious clean food eaters & chefs. It is the only certified organic farmer's market in Georgia/perhaps the whole country. I have been buying my greens & meats there since it opened in 1995. (First local farmer's market in Atlanta!) In the mid 2000's, I spent several years in Southern & Northern California & no markets in LA or Sonoma County compares to what we have right here in Atlanta at this market! You do not have to ask if something is organic. It ALL is! We buy all our fresh food for the week at MFM. Leafy greens, root vegetables, fresh herbs, potatoes, eggs, beef, pork, chicken, sausage (pork OR chicken!) bacon (yummy!), chocolate, Pure Bliss Bars & Bites, granola, nuts, baked good & breads, Fresh juices, coffee, fresh pasta, condiments, come see! Nothing beats a cup of organic coffee with an organic pastry while listening to live music & meeting new friends & sharing recipes on what to do with all the seasonal goodies. If you want more for breakfast, the pop up chef provides waffles, sausage, grit bowls, pancakes, you name it! My boss and another colleague religiously arise on Saturday mornings to go to the Morningside Farmer's Market, and I finally pulled myself out of bed to go around 9 a.m.--at that time, it was already hopping. (The market is open from 8:30-11 every Saturday, year-round, according to the website.) Parking was plentiful, in the lot across the street beside Alon's Bakery on North Highland. I didn't know what to expect but was surprised by how small the market turned out to be--maybe 10 or so vendors with their own little tents. The produce was pricey, of course; I purchased a couple squash, some green bell peppers and onions to make a veggie broil. The squash and peppers were especially fresh and devoid of pesticides or other toxins. I understand the concept of paying a little more to support local farmers, but one tent was selling a small carton of blackberries for $7. The price wasn't listed, and since the berries looked so plump, shiny and juicy, I asked the cashier for the price. When he said 7 dollars, I felt sort of embarrassed to say "Okay" and walk away. All of the other vendors did a good job of posting the prices, though. The handmade soaps, lovely flowers and organic breads were tempting, too. I'll definitely return to the Morningside Farmer's Market, when I'm able to get out of bed. Plus, spending a little extra cash on local produce is well worth it. read more

Now *that's* more like it. This is a market where you can get food. Fruits, veggies, eggs, beef, pork... Good variety and good prices. Not large by any stretch, but the variety and size work well together. Don't expect too many exotics; these are local farms. Picked up a wonderfully fragrant cantaloupe, purple bell peppers, thick juicy tomatoes, lettuce, and carrots this week. Be sure to make a full tour before deciding. I'm kicking myself because I missed the purple carrots, although those didn't have the greens attached. Even if I turn to CSAs for weekly produce, I'll likely stop here for extras and to try the meat. Yeah, meat at a farmer's market is pricey, but you'll find you need to eat about half as much to feel happy and satisfied. Seriously, real meat is that much better. I didn't see chicken, alas, and only one stall carries meat that I saw, but they're wearing shirts extolling the joy of pig. What possibly could go bad starting from there? Will definitely work some into my menu next week, and get here earlier. read more

The Morningside Farmers' Market is one of the best markets in town because of its: a.) convenient location b.) more stringent vendor regulations (must be certified organic) c.) variety of vendors present d.) chef demonstrations. While prices are indeed more then a grocery store, you have to understand the POV if farmers' markets and Morningside in particular-- to deliver the highest quality, freshest, organic and local food to the consumer with the highest amount of transparency (buying from the actual producer!) I love Morningside because there is always time to relationship market, or speak to the people who are growing you produce, curing your meat, baking your bread, and churning your dairy. The chef demos are always great, and you always learn something, if not try a delicious morsel from one of Atlanta's premiere chefs. My favorite demo was by Carvel Gould of Canoe, who showed us how to make her famous smoked salmon on crispy potato cake. YUM. Plus, even after you've shopped, you have the whole day ahead of you since it is only open from 8:30-10:30 am! LOVE this place. read more

This is my favorite farmer's market! It's the only ALL ORGANIC farmers market there is in GA. I am grateful that it is close by and they offers a wide variety of produce and grocery items. They usually have a chef there cooking something amazing with items found at the market. The vendors there are wonderful and always have what I am looking for; you can find the best quality breads, meats, eggs, fruits, veggies, coffee, granolas, soaps, pastas, hummus, juices, kefirs, kombucha and other ferments. Every Saturday from 8-11:30 local farmer's and other vendors gather to sell their goods in the parking lot across from Alon's bakery. The best all-season farmers market in Atlanta. As a native Californian born and breed on Farmers Markets, I take them very seriously. Every weekend at least once a month, I was my sanctuary of fresh foods for reasonable prices (especially when Trader Joe's and Whole Foods are practically your only options) down there. They did convince me finally to purchase fresh butchered meats and I struggle now to return to the mass-manufactured. They also have a email list that gives you a heads up on what will be available the weekend of to plan ahead. read more
