I never thought I would ever be a "Tattoo Guy." However, after my daughter suddenly passed away at age 30 in 2022, I wanted to have something that keeps her spirit with me and will always be with me wherever I go and whatever I do. After about a year of introspection, I decided that a memorial tattoo for my daughter would be highly appropriate for me. After much research on local Tattoo shops, I decided to work with Morningstar Tattoo Parlor. When I first visited Morningstar, I was amazed that this parlor was not like tattoo parlors as portrayed in the media. Morningstar occupies a spacious, clean, comfortable, and professional series of suites on the second and third floors of their building. They are by appointment only, original artwork only, and they have several policies that strike me as highly professional. When I reached out to Morningstar, Jordi Simmons returned my call, and after a brief conversation, I felt comfortable proceeding with Jordi as my tattooist. My whole experience with Jordi, given her professionalism, creativity, artistry, and skill was outstanding! Jordi and I initially met for about 2 hours, and she really took the time to understand why I wanted this tattoo, what my what my daughter was like in life (the good and the bad), my spiritual beliefs regarding life, sentience and death, and other topics personally relevant and meaningful to me. Jordi also clearly described what she could and could not do with tattoo designs, such as font sizes, resolution, and other things to consider with the design. I gave Jordi some initial concepts of what might work for a design concept as a starting point. Over the next 4 months Jordi and I periodically corresponded via email about design concepts to be considered. When I arrived on the day we had scheduled for the tattoo to be applied, we hadn't yet settled on a final design, and Jordi presented the latest design she developed for me. I was absolutely blown away at the design she created! The design is way beyond anything I had thought possible. The image Jordi created for me captures an amazing amount symbolism about what my daughter was like in life, my spiritual beliefs regarding life and death, and other aspects of my daughter's short life. The images, and even the relative placement of numbers, text, and images carries deep symbolism and meaning for me. Jordi quickly incorporated some very small changes to the design based on my feedback, and then it was time to apply the tattoo. The initial application was a 3-hour sitting at Jordi's station, toward the end of which, my skin was getting irritated enough that Jordi advised that we should stop, because continuing the application that day could compromise the quality of the final tattoo. Because of this, we ended our session for the day and scheduled a second sitting 3 weeks later. During the interim time between the first and second application, I researched Tattoo best practices for design and application. This helped me really understand in detail that Jordi had carefully planned of the tattoo's overall size, orientation, and placement that otherwise I would not have noticed. Everything Jordi did was according to the best practices I researched; Jordi planned for a tattoo that will displays and ages well. We finished the tattoo during our second sitting of about an hour and a half and I am beyond happy with the final product. The final tattoo is much more than I ever thought possible in so many ways. Jordi is an amazingly talented and insightful artist who happens to also be a pro at applying tattoos as well. I had an appt. with @JeannieMarieTattoos from San Francisco and despite concerns on my part this shop is spacious, spotless, well organized, had PPE, well versed in checking temps, and screening clients. My artist also tests herself frequently for her own health and her clients. She had extra protocols for protecting the client. There's only two artists working at a time much further than 6ft. Both are exceptional IMO. I honestly think it's one of the best tattoo set ups I've been in to date. Plus it took me even LESS time to drive from my home in SF to Belmont, than it would to go to her usual spot in the outer sunset (and hello, actual parking lot!). Would highly recommend Jeannie, my tattoo pic is blurry so check her work on insta. Lots of detail and biological illustration is one of her strengths but she does so many styles. Thanks again! You probably can tell that Adam is one of the best in the business by looking at his portfolio of work. This review is based on my personal experience, having three pieces of tattoos done by Adam. He has the ability to take a concept and turn it into an amazing piece of art. The final results of all three pieces turned out much better than I had imagined coming in (and I am somewhat of a perfectionist). He is very meticulous and detailed oriented. His execution is top notch; thus, the healing process is quick. He is professional and friendly. During the sitting, he always checked in to make sure that I was comfortable. All of my friends, coworkers and family members were wowed by Adam's work. One friend studied one of the tattoo for a long time and said "I am trying to find one little thing off to criticize and I can't find any." Adam is one of the best. And I can say this with the utmost confidence, for various reasons. His tattoos are gorgeous. His eye for detail is incredible (I'm a details person, and I'm hard pressed to ever find anything less than goddamned perfect with his work. It's almost frustrating. Almost.) His work with colour is pretty unique- I've always got people stopping me on the street, asking me about my tattoos. I could go on about his tattoos, but look at his book, and you'll see for yourself. One thing you probably won't see, though- is how they age. And they do so beautifully. Adam has talked me out of more than a few super fine-lined, ridiculously detailed pieces, telling me they'd be a big blur in a few years. I've always trusted his advice, and the tattoos he's given me haven't aged a bit. (This is important- they're going to be on you for a very long time. Forever-styles. You know, permanent.) They look as fresh as they did when they were a few months old. I have some girlfriends who went elsewhere, didn't get the same sage advice, and now have indecipherable blobbies permanently etched on them. Boo. Moral of that story: find a great artist, and do your homework, kids. To top all of this off, Adam is awesome. When he tattoos me, I feel like I'm hanging out with a buddy. A hilarious buddy. And that's pretty nice when you're being tattooed for a few hours at a time on fun places like your butt cheek. I'm from Vancouver, and I plan on traveling to San Francisco for my tattoos now. I'm not the yelper that aims to leave as many reviews as possible to become elite. I'm the yelper the likes to leave my reviews far and few, to give credit when due and vent in complete utter disappointment. In this instance I'm giving credit where it's due! Adam is a truly a gifted and amazing tattoo artist. My experience started off with me going to him with an idea of what I thought I wanted in mind. After stopping in and talking to him a couple of times and trying to describe to him what I wanted my descriptions became conflicting. Rather than letting me put something relatively large on my body I would later regret he was honest and hinted maybe what I wanted wasn't for me. Knowing that I still wanted a new piece, I took his honest opinion to heart and came back with a new idea. He took my idea and transformed it into a beautiful piece of art that I could never have dreamed of. In addition to his artistic skill and wonderful chairside manner Adam also excercises amazing technique to ensure that his clients are as comfortable as possible and "painless" as possible to get work done. I can't wait to go back to my next session and I'm sure I'll be adding on more as soon as this is complete! I only wish I didn't have to wait two weeks!!! read more
