After we chatted with Rick for a bit we headed outside to the plane where Rick offered to take some photos of us. The views from the plane were breathtaking and a once in a lifetime experience. We were told to keep an eye out for some Bay Area landmarks and other notable sights throughout the ride. From start to finish this tour was worth it. We didn't look at any other tourist sites, nor did we have any ideas for an itinerary. We told Kili that we wanted a long-trip, as we believed we would never go back. That's when Kili informed us that she named the company Next Adventure, as everyone who travels to Africa usually wishes to return. We knew we wanted to go gorilla trekking, see elephants and experience the local people and cultures. Beyond that, we did no research. Kili created the perfect itinerary that exceeded our expectations. From the moment we landed until our final day, we were treated to amazing people, customer service and respect. We were comforted knowing that Next Adventure was monitoring every step of our journey. We visited four camps: Bwindi Lodge (Uganda), Kechechi, Lewa, and Sarara camps (Kenya), and each adventure was fantastic. The employees at each camp were so welcoming and proud of their heritage, and provided outstanding service. It was also a blast having communal meals with the guests at each camp and we made connections from around the globe. We saw every animal that we hoped to see, yet the human connections, especially with the locals proved to be the highlight of the trip. People in Africa have such a difficult life, and yet, they are a happy, smiling and proud people. Stories were shared, we were invited into villages and homes. It was an unforgettable experience and we will work with Kili and Next Adventure for a later trip.

She invites you to have breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks with her every day of the trip (except B & L on a free day). It is an intimate, small group experience designed to immerse you in Thai culture (all Thai food!) and acquaint you in subtle ways with a Buddhist way of thinking about life and living in the moment. For someone like me who is not very facile with the Thai language, and does not have family in Thailand, I cannot think of any better way to see the country's highlights while avoiding heavily touristed areas. Or any other way to enjoy authentically spiced multi-course Thai feasts nearly every night. I took my first trip with Kasma in 2005, to Southern Thailand, only a few weeks after the Indian Ocean tsunami severely damaged some popular resort areas. She expertly adapted our schedule when a park remained closed longer than expected, and guided us in making donations to help families in a small fishing village that had lost their boats. Since 2005, I have returned five times, enjoying both Northern and Southern Thailand with Kasma's varying itineraries. No other country has as many stamps in my passport. As a small business focused on providing a harmonious experience, Kasma takes care to set expectations in advance, through a detailed website, an interview, and numerous letters. These merit careful study, because the trips are not for everyone. There is a heavy emphasis on food: sharing large Thai meals, learning about local ingredients, and exploring a wide variety of markets and street foods. If you are not into Thai food, this may be boring to you. Seekers of creature comforts, beware: most of the accommodations are modest. Independent travelers might find the time allowed for wandering at a particular temple, museum, village, or market to be too limited. I can appreciate some of James S's comments: my first exposure to Thai driving raised my eyebrows, and when we visited towns and villages featuring a diverse range of handicrafts, we did run around sampling them (in various places, baskets, nielloware, shadow puppets, handmade paper, silk, weaving, wood carvings, ceramics, etc.); the schedule can be pretty packed. Fortunately, I can't remember any mold/mildew issues, although in other tropical destinations such as Hawaii, I have experienced smelly air conditioners from time to time. I wouldn't say Kasma was ever "oblivious to [trip members'] concerns and needs." It is true that Kasma expects trip members to at least try to fend for themselves at hotels and shops; it's part of the philosophy of the trip that group members are not isolated from their local hosts. If I had housekeeping issues, I generally found the hotel very accommodating. (Sometimes a lot of gesturing was required to convey my point; the desk staff wasn't always conversant in English, and my Thai is very limited.) I have seen Kasma help solve dozens of problems, as well as make time for special requests, such as helping arrange a replacement pair of glasses, and adjusting the schedule to satisfy a group member's special interest. In sum: if you love spicy Thai food, don't need four-star accommodations, are curious about the real Thailand, and can cultivate an attitude of generous tolerance of differences among your trip "family," Kasma's trips are definitely worth a look.

One of the best things that I took away from the trip was feeling like I was actually Thai! Kasma has really designed her trips to make you feel like you belong there. I never had the feeling of not being safe. I thoroughly enjoyed the drivers, Sun and Yao, and they only added to the wonderful experience. What other trip could you take to another country and be asked to show off the cooking skills that you have learned from Kasma with the people that run one of the resorts there. The trip to me was very organized, and I never felt as though we were staying in a bad area or a bad hotel. Let's be honest - I am not a farm person. I appreciate a good meal but am not one who normally spends much time worrying about where my food comes from. So I expected to be bored on this trip, frankly. Boy was I wrong. This trip blew my expectations away. It was a great mix of different farms and different ways of doing things, and I felt like a kid again on a super-fun field trip where you got to explore and touch and watch the makings of where your food comes from. The farmers were genuine, down-to-earth people and were serious farm-fresh foodies. We literally had meals prepared for us by the farmers right in front of us and they were SO DELICIOUS. I got to pick my own tomatoes right off the vine. I even learned about fruits and vegetables I'd never even heard of. Oh, did I mention I got to try them out, too? The environment was relaxed. The guides were very knowledgeable and interesting. And the design of the event was really mellow but well planned. Did I mention the views? These properties are just amazing. What awesome country to get to go hang out in. Between all the exploring, wine, food and learning, the day went by fast and I got to take in a ton of beautiful sites. This tour was a find. After having my parents visit the bay area regularly and running out of creative things to do with them, I know where I am taking them next. What a great and unique thing to do on your weekend.

My wife and I went on a tour that took us up to Russian River without knowing what to expect…read more We've always been interested in gardening and farming, but weren't aware of organic farms open to the public where one could organize a tour and really explore the nuts and bolts. Bay Area Green Tours really came through in this regard, and they arranged everything beautifully. The most memorable stop was a farm run by a restauranteur and chef, and they went all out on the tour. We picked our own fruits and vegetables and the chef prepared them in a gorgeous outdoor setting. Meeting the family that owned and operated the farm was eye opening and educational. For example, the farmer/chef explained that his warm-loving citrus trees do much better at higher altitude up his hill rather than at the base due to the downhill sliding effect of cold air. Good eats, great people, and very educational. Not a bad way to spend a weekend or two!

I went on a backpacking trip in Big Sur (Mill Creek trail) and it was great. The price was reasonable considering you get a guide to navigate the 2-2 1/2 mile trek into the woods, it includes dinner and breakfast, and we even got to do archery! An added bonus, in my opinion, because now I'm hooked and going to buy a set for at home! A down side is you need to meet in King City...I had to drive from Monterey in the morning to meet them there (an hour am a half) and then another 1 1/2-2 hours to get to Big Sur. It was a lot of driving for me. Would have preferred to meet at Mill creek trail somehow, but I know being an out of towner, it may have been tricky for me to find. It's a great relaxing night trip...it would be neat if they had two night options...here or elsewhere! I felt pretty darned spoiled going on this backpacking trip. The most luxurious backpacking…read moreadventure I've been on yet. What I really liked about this trip, was that the guides and the people in the group were all very friendly, and I learned a lot about wilderness preparedness, some of the local vegetation, and also just made me think of what other supplies I would need to bring, and kept me aware of what is the smart things to do in emergency situations and traveling in general. Some parts of the trail we went on involved a bit of climbing, but wasn't too difficult for the most part and the guides were there every step of the way to offer a helping hand across the stream, or whatever else. What actually enhanced the hike for me was the rain (or heavy mist as guide Chris liked to call it). The hike was so beautiful and green, walking along Mill Creek, and with all the trees, we actually didn't get hit too hard by the rain. The food that guide Dan prepared for us in the evening was also super delicious. The hot meal was much appreciated. And the boxed wine. ;) And of course, plenty of coffee in the morning. There was plenty of space in the teepees that they set up for us, but about half our group slept outside, which I'm sure was absolutely beautiful, but it was a little too chilly for my liking, so I was glad for some shelter. It felt like my group was anti-social (we didn't mean to be) as we pretty much had the teepee to ourselves, until one of the helper guides dove in to stay warm. And I'm actually surprised how much of the supplies the 4 main guides were carrying compared to the rest of the group. We were given some of the bowls, chairs, and the food to carry, but the guides were doing most of the heavy lifting. There was a few things I didn't like about the overall trip, but I understand this is a beginner backpacking tour. For me personally, I'd like to be a little more involved, so I felt pretty helpless, standing around while they set up the teepees and cooked the food. Dan assigned my friends to crush up some croutons. Productivity ftw! And not to stereotype, but it very much felt like a "guys" trip. When we arrived at our meeting spot at Starbucks before caravaning to the park, there were no introductions made, nor was there a sense of the overall itinerary. Basically, we were told just enough to get to the next location. Don't get me wrong, these guys know exactly what they're doing, but I'd appreciate a little more communication/organization. A big thank you to Chris, Dan, Mo, and Steve for providing a fun and informative adventure.
