Imagine falling asleep under the umbrella of redwood trees and peering at stars through the canopy - in the middle of the forest away from anything remotely resembling modern society. This memory fully captures my thoughts on the trip. Furthermore, Bay Area Expeditions was a great choice for an intro into backpacking course for the following reasons: super cool guys, they know their stuff, they tell you only what you really need to know. Chris, Johnny, and Dan were very experienced, intelligent, and cool dudes - they shared very pertinent information that you would think would be obvious, but we almost always certainly forget. If you want to pick up the basics about backpacking, hear some great wilderness stories and have a great time, I would certainly recommend Bay Area Expeditions. The Big Sur hike itself can be done by anyone questioning their fitness - it is a pretty easy in-and-out hike and we took a lot of breaks to take in the surprisingly beautiful creek along our route. My one tip other than bringing yourself and a positive outlook: be sure to bring a snack or sandwich on the first day. Bay Area Expeditions also has a survival and safety course with more in-depth field analysis. They also do excursions deep into the Black Rock Desert where the annual Burning Man festivals are held, which our group is possibly considering in the near future.

are you interested in experiencing the outdoors but intimidated by the cost of equipment, the prospect of becoming lost, or the idea of going at it alone? if so, the big sur expedition offered by bay area expeditions is perfect for you. owner/guide/brawny outdoorsman chris van loan really knows his shit. and after one trip with him, you'll know some shit too - like how to filter water from a stream, what kind of clothing is best for a backpacking trip, the proper (and comfortable) way to wear your pack, and most important, how to react in a crisis situation when you are in the woods, with only the supplies you carried in on your back. BAE provides all the gear you will need, and if you're looking to buy, chris is happy to share his wisdom on which brands are best. the expedition itself consisted of a 3-mile hike into the woods, sleeping in a clearing, and then hiking back out the next morning. i was able to take some amazing photos of the waterfalls, redwoods, and banana slugs we passed along our way. dinner and breakfast are provided, but bringing snacks is a good idea. i didn't find the hike too challenging, and everyone in our group of mixed ages/abilities was able to make it without trouble. this is a fantastic way to see big sur and gain confidence in your outdoor survival abilities. i can't wait to follow chris into the desert on his american safari!

So, instead of our usual family trip to another country or state this summer, we decided to become tourists in our own backyard and booked an eight-hour San Francisco Alcatraz + City Tour, including Muir Woods and Sausalito. The tour cost $179 per adult (nine of us) and $169 for one child, and we even booked a hotel nearby the night before to make sure we'd be on time for our 9am start. We all met beneath the iconic Fisherman's Wharf sign, where Patrick was our guy! Patrick was knowledgeable, witty, and engaging--he kept us entertained with fascinating facts about San Francisco, fun trivia questions, and even handed out Ghirardelli chocolate as prizes. My man and I answered so many questions that we ended up with almost half the bag! Even though we were a bit hungover from pub crawling the night before, Patrick's energy kept us awake and involved. He thoughtfully included the three kids in our group, telling them to count Priuses on the street and quizzing them with their own set of trivia. Along the way, he pointed out some quirky facts, like there being more dogs than babies in San Francisco, and made sure everyone felt part of the experience. Patrick pointed out several billionaires' homes, as well as highlights like Chinatown and Japantown. We made a memorable stop at the Presidio and Fort Point for stunning views and photos of the Golden Gate Bridge. Patrick even volunteered to take group pictures for us and made sure we had time for restroom breaks. After crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, we made our way to Muir Woods. Though we only had an hour and a half--just enough time for my older siblings--my man and I left wanting more, wishing we could explore beyond the designated paths. The towering redwoods, some between 400 and 800 years old, were awe-inspiring. I'm sure there were even more breathtaking sights we didn't have a chance to see. Next, Patrick took us on a drive through Sausalito, pointing out popular restaurants and an old recording studio once frequented by celebrities. After dropping off a few tourists, he guided us to the starting point for our Alcatraz Tour and left us at Fisherman's Wharf for lunch. We felt a little sad knowing it was the last time we'd see him--at that point, we were on our own for the rest of the adventure. Although I've visited San Francisco many times--unlike my siblings--I still learned so much from the tour. We all had a great time, even my man who lived in the city for several years. While I initially thought the price was steep, by the end of the day, it felt completely worth it!

My tour guide was fantastic: friendly, knowledgeable, and full of fun facts, local tips, and recommendations that made the experience even better. I also loved that the group was small (about 8 people in the van), which made it easy to ask questions and actually see everything without feeling crowded. The three photo stops are short, but they're at excellent viewpoints and perfect for getting some Instagram-worthy pictures. As a solo traveler, I honestly can't recommend this tour enough. You get an incredible amount of value for the price, and it's a great way to get your bearings before exploring the city on your own. I'd recommend keeping notes of the places and recommendations your guide mentions so you can revisit them later. One thing that really stood out was the customer service. My original booking didn't meet the minimum group size, so I was moved to a different tour. Unfortunately, that caused me to arrive late, but the guide was incredibly gracious and made me feel welcome without any hassle. Whether you're traveling solo, with a partner, or as a family, I'd absolutely recommend this tour. It's one of the best ways to kick off a trip to San Francisco.

I do agree…read morethat it's a little pricey but if you spend a solid 2-3+ hours there, I think it's worth it. Pros: + The staff were incredibly kind and helpful. + Once you get on the island and go through the 5 minute orientation from the NPS ranger, you're free to roam about. + The audio-guided tour is actually REALLY good. It was my first time and I thought it would be cheesy but it was engrossing and informative. + Restrooms were very clean and not crowded (at least not the guy's restroom). + There are some truly AMAZING views of the bay. Bring a travel-safe camera. Neutral: ~ There's restrictions on food and drink (only bottled water is allowed in the majority of the park). So plan ahead. ~ San Francisco traffic is real and kinda sucks. Plan ahead for delays. ~ A good portion of the park is outdoors (which isn't a negative but means that it's impacted by the weather). It gets super windy so plan ahead and dress appropriately. Cons: - The price is indeed a little high. I don't think I'd go here all the time. Once every couple years is probably fine. - A friend told me that there's a LOT of bird poop around and they were right. It's not enough to impact walking but does detract from the experience slightly.

Poor Service Experience with Alcatraz City Cruises…read more I'm writing this review to share my experience with the company's customer service, specifically around their cancellation policy. We were excited to book a trip through Alcatraz City Cruises on 6/16/26. Unfortunately, a family emergency forced me to cancel our trip to San Francisco, including this tour. I cancelled through the confirmation link in my email on 6/19 -- well within the 72-hour window required for a full refund, since the event itself wasn't until 6/26. The website showed my reservation as cancelled, so I stepped away to deal with the family emergency. In my rush, I never went back to check for a separate cancellation confirmation email, since the site had already shown the cancellation as complete. That was my mistake -- but it led to a frustrating outcome: I was charged for the tickets on the day of the event anyway. I didn't catch the charge until I reviewed my bank statement at the start of the following month. I called four times and couldn't reach a live person. When I finally got through to a representative, my request for a refund was denied. I asked again for the decision to be reviewed, but the agent refused, saying they would not look into it further. I understand that not confirming the cancellation via email was an oversight on my part. But the website clearly showed the reservation as cancelled, and we never used the tickets. Given that the cancellation was initiated well within the refund window, I would have expected more flexibility from customer service -- not an automatic denial. Dissapointed in this company and would not book through them again. Unfortantely, they did come up as one of the recommended companies to book through due to other scams and fake sites, but beware

Very knowledgeable, extremely easy to talk to, and more than happy to play photographer. If you are looking for a way to see everything without having to plan it yourself or rent a car during your trip, this is what to do. You won't be disappointed.
