Don't expect a mega-tourist trinket trap, but do expect a small selection of informative books, maps, and some hiking accessories. The ladies are very nice, and I ended up buying a mug and an Anchorage trail guide. Memberships to the organization are also on sale here, and I am proud to say that I am now a member. $35 buys a basic membership which includes a subscription to Alaska magazine, and a reusable shopping bag. Just the value of the magazine is almost worth the membership fee. Always a supporter for a good cause, I opted for a little higher level, and got a couple of logo pins as well. It also comes with a 15% discount on merchandise, and another discount for their educational programs. As I said, the shop is small and they are just getting settled into their new digs. Maybe not worth a trip on its own, but the Ulu Factory is right next door. So, if you're in the area anyway, it's worth a side trip.

It's also a great place to spend some time, while waiting for the "All Aboard!" signal. There's also an online shop for later. Even if this is not your thing, I recommend that you go in and buy the "Ride Guide" for $5. It's a great guide as you roll along the stunning scenery that the Alaska Railroad takes you through.

Authentic handmade Alaska Native crafts can be a little tricky to find if you don't know where to…read morelook. Most native crafters are cottage industries that don't have permanent storefronts. Craft fairs, word of mouth and art galleries are the best places to find such items, especially when it comes to skin sewing (items crafted from animal fur and hides.) I always look forward to seeing the Iya family at craft fairs because their items are stunning. They have one of a kind fur mittens, hats, purses and ivory carvings and beadwork. Two years ago, I spied a seal and polar bear purse that I wanted desperately but couldn't afford. (Before you get your underwear in a bunch, please know that the native people waste nothing. Subsistence hunting is a way of life here in Alaska.) Finally this year, they had another purse similar to the one I had seen and I practically snatched it out of another lady's hands. I told her if she wasn't gonna buy it to get her mitts off, cause I had dibs. She is such a joy and inspiration as a person and her beautiful studio reflects her radiant personality. With a variety of items available this is a great spot to stop if looking for art for your living or working space as well as the perfect spot to stop for gifts. No pressure sales associates that are there to answer questions but also give you the time and space you need to linger and discuss pieces and options. Sadly, much of the trinkets say designed in the USA but are manufactured in China or Korea. Very few I found (other than the local foods) were made in the USA. Nice shop though with lots of unique gifts!
