Not the "best" in motels. However, rooms are clean. Staff is friendly. And if youre on a budget then this works.

All the different kinds of sweeteners and they have sweet cream, half and half, French vanilla, and hazelnut creamer. Individual cup coffee makers that grind the beans as you wait on the cup. The breakfast is great too! Turkey sausage, pork sausage, cheese omelets, really good sausage and gravy with biscuits, a very cool pancake maker (it makes two at a time but one is small) instead of having to wait on waffle makers. I'm pretty pleased with this stay!

I had originally booked a suite, but the first room smelled smoky--almost like an overheated vacuum cleaner. The second room smelled strongly of smoke as well, but since I needed to get ready quickly for the wedding, I decided to let it go. To their credit, the staff handled the room change politely, though it almost felt like this was a common issue. Unfortunately, the hallways smelled like marijuana, and there was a lingering "smoking theme" throughout. The carpets felt damp and the rooms were noticeably humid, which made the overall environment less comfortable. While the hotel itself was reasonably clean, it's clear that people are smoking inside, and the property could benefit from better air filtration or moisture control in the rooms. On a positive note, the continental breakfast was much nicer than expected, offering a full hot breakfast rather than just the basics. Overall, I don't feel the stay was worth the rate I paid. For under $100 a night, this hotel would have been acceptable, but at a higher price point it fell short of my expectation.

Let's not get carried away, knowing how technical of a race it was and elevation...I digress....) I knew I'd need a place to stay nearby. After a little sleuthing, I landed on Comfort Inn Kings Mountain Arrival was smooth. Big parking lot, well lit, and immediately felt easy. Check-in was quick and painless, and the front desk agent, Star, was genuinely pleasant. Always a solid start. The room was spacious and clean. Shower pressure was strong, which I always appreciate, though the handle was a bit loose and occasionally allowed the water to creep into "whoa there" territory. Probably just needs a quick tighten of a washer or screw. Minor thing. The bed was large and comfortable. Exactly what you want the night before a race. Breakfast was your standard hotel setup, but honestly, it's hard to mess up a toasted bagel. Carbs were secured, mission accomplished. Location worked out perfectly for both the event and nearby food. Price and value were spot on for what I needed. Would I stay here again? Absolutely. Especially if I come back next year and decide to level up to the 50 miler. More than likely.

Let's get back to the food lol. I don't know which one was better, the apple oatmeal or the pumpkin cream of wheat! The jams! The syrups! Especially the cream cheese syrup for those magnificent gingerbread waffles! The sausage and those glorious potatoes that I could literally eat for breakfast lunch and dinner and last but certainly not least, that amazing Nixon ketchup (to-die-for) The small town it's in is called Grover. It's a very small country town with so much charm! It's quiet but you can tell it's a well loved place. The rooms are all decorated with a different theme. We stayed in the Oceanicus Blue Room! We took the cooking class (extra charge) with chef Marti on Sunday, and we made Scottish cottage pie, which was delicious. You not only get to cook, but chef Marti provides background information regarding Scotland. (Map, history, a couple short videos of movies about Scotland, regional dishes to Scotland, etc.) Chef Marti involves everyone in the cooking process. Once our cottage pie had baked in the oven, we sat around the kitchen table and had a bowl of pie, and a salad and bread. (Drinks also) Breakfast was served each morning at 9am, and was very good. Fresh fruit each morning, and yesterday we had oatmeal with apples, bacon, baked egg dish with red peppers, skillet potatoes with homemade ketchup, and really good toast made from some type of French bread. I added some strawberry jam on top, and it was delicious. Today we had homemade sausage with fennel, skillet potatoes, cream of wheat with cranberries, and croissant French toast. There were only 4 of us at breakfast, so there was a lot of food for everyone. I was stuffed...it was so good. Chef Marti, and his helper (Kim) go above and beyond, to make sure you have what you need. Relaxing on the front porch rockers was very nice each evening.
