With an already generous 1.8 average rating, I naively assumed the bar couldn't possibly be as low as advertised. After sifting through hundreds of dusty pieces of "art", and I use that term with charity, I found myself staring at a selection that included high school diplomas, finger paintings, and several canvases that seemed to have lost a fight with both mold and a Sharpie. It's unclear whether these pieces were abandoned, donated, or simply left on the curb and swept inside, but the result is the same: a museum of mediocrity, priced like MoMA's gift shop. Finally, after unearthing a painting that at least had the decency to resemble actual decor, I politely offered the cashier $20 cash for an item marked $29.99. This is where the experience somehow managed to get worse. She refused outright- not even a token pause to feign consideration- then snatched the painting out of my hands with the kind of hostility usually reserved for airport security confiscating contraband. Her tone could best be described as performatively rude as though she'd been waiting all day for the chance to unleash it on someone. I have never written a Yelp review before, but my experience at Mother of Junk today was so unbelievably awful that I felt compelled to. I've lived in New York for 13 years and have shopped at this store many times, both personally and professionally. I used to source items here while working on an HGTV show. My family is moving out of the city soon, and I specifically planned a trip to Mother of Junk to pick up a few pieces to remind me of our time in New York. Anyone who has been here knows this store is a chaotic, cluttered maze. I've visited enough times to know exactly what it is, which is why I had no concerns bringing my baby in a stroller. I carefully planned the trip around his nap time, arranged my schedule around school pickup for my other kids, and spent $35 on Uber rides just to get there. The second I walked in, the employee asked, "Is there a baby in there?" When I said yes, I was immediately told to stop. After making me wait while he finished what he was doing, he informed me that babies were not allowed because the store was a "live construction site." A live construction site? Then why is the store open? Why were multiple customers actively shopping? Instead, I was publicly singled out, embarrassed in front of other customers, and denied entry because I had a baby with me. If the store is truly unsafe, close it. Don't pick and choose which customers are allowed inside. I left in tears, shocked and humiliated. Then, as I was leaving, the employee told me I should be thanking him. Thanking him? For wasting my time and money? For humiliating me in front of a room full of strangers? For treating a longtime customer like a nuisance? This was easily the most hostile, bizarre, and unprofessional retail experience I've had in 13 years of living in New York. This store had SO MUCH stuff and the selection was super cool. There are more expensive items, but from what I could see things were priced fairly for what they are worth. I walked around and saw a bunch of cool stuff, but only one plate caught my eye. I went to check out with my $3 plate and didn't end up getting it since they have a $10 minimum on cards and that's all I had. They also let me know that they don't allow pictures or videos to be take inside when they saw me take a picture They were nice to me in communicating their policies. I'd def recommend checking this place out especially if you're looking for furniture or art. Most of the cool stuff I saw was bigger so it would've been hard for me to bring home. read more

I stumbled upon this place in Williamsburg and decided to walk in. My wife and I walked around and saw a beautiful fine china bowl for $2.99 that we grabbed along with other items. When we walked up to pay, she immediately grabbed the item and told us that as of store policy, she cannot sell us the item because "us or someone else" switched the prices. I decided to keep my mouth shut as I did not want to cause conflict. I don't appreciate being accused of ripping price tags off. if i could rate this place with negative stars, i absolutely would. what a genuine horrible experience for absolutely no reason. the reason why that place is so packed with junk is because they are pricing broken down and horribly filthy pieces of garbage for $70. that's not even an exaggeration. every single thing in there is either extremely damaged or awfully dirty, and don't even think about trying to negotiate because they will basically spit in your face. the customer "service" is just plain ridiculous. these people have no care for their customers. i tried to ask if i could have a truly filthy vase that was price at $30 for less, and some middle aged man told me that my negotiation tactics are flawed. he then proceeded to mock me, and when i asked if i could "try to negotiate again" in the way he wanted, he told me that they don't even negotiate prices at all. so he essentially just made fun of me to my face for not wanting to spend more than i make in an hour on a vase that is falling apart and filled with dirt. do not come here period, especially if you are looking for junk. i do not know how they are still in business and i do not think they should be. this place has 700 lamps for $50 each, yet not one single lamp shade. no one should be leaving a genuine junk yard as angry and completely empty handed as i am. i hope they shut down or the management reaches enlightenment. the whole point of junk is that it's cheap there is nothing i can get here that i can't get on facebook marketplace or goodwill for way cheaper and in way better condition. if it's gonna be falling apart and dirty it might as well be unique and beautiful and everything was just plain boring stupid. read more

Extremely combative, PHYSICAL altercation with a customer from the woman at the cashier, not about the other employees or the finds here. I had two items I wanted to buy, but asked if I could leave them here while I went to lunch since they were fragile. She said yep, then told a man to put them back. I said oh do you need my name or..? She said no, you're not buying them so I'm putting them back. I said no I want to, and she said you don't want to buy them, not right now. I was so confused, I said I said I'm going to buy them if you don't hold them. And I was trying to take them so that I could walk around the rest of the store or do a last look before purchasing. She snatched them towards her so quick. She actually yanked so hard she almost BROKE one of the cups. I caught it and she snatched it from my hand so quick. Every time I tried to reach for the items to pay, she would smack the plates down and said you're not buying them. I was so confused- she was playing tug of war with me with the items, physically wrangling with me. I said I would not purchase because of her terrible attitude and she said yeah never don't back, don't ever come back. Who does that?? read more

My experience was fine personally, it was smooth and quick. However I witnessed the old lady behind the counter being very verbally aggressive towards a patron. It was messy, cluttered, and disorganized. You really have to dig to find anything of value. I wouldn't recommend and I wouldn't go back again. read more

Really good spot for some good vintage pieces. ESP the pricing ! Not too expensive. Many people were fussing about the staff but from what I encountered/overheard they seemed fine. They seemed to help customers in the direction of where they needed to go. They don't hassle pricing. So don't even try to - maybe that's where the attitude comes from for others ? They literally have a sign saying prices are firm. My only complaint is how crowded it is with items. Hard to move around inside. read more

When I first walked in there was a ton of vintage frames. My friend had mentioned she was on the look out for some. I took out my phone to send her a picture and one of the employees says "hey no photography in here." Which ok whatever, although there was no sign up saying it in the first place stating that. Then he proceeded to say "you didn't even know what you were taking a picture of, you didn't even compose a shot" First off you don't even know what you're talking about. It's unfortunate that I have to write this review because I was a frequent shopper here over the last two years. 2-3 weeks ago I went here, brought two items to the register, and this old woman working there claimed that the price tag was switched on one of the items. Sometimes you can find cool items but the prices have increased MASSIVELY. I'm not paying 19.99 for something that's broken! And the workers are the rudest people I've met. The older lady who works the front desk accused me of changing the price tag on an item, even though her other worker admitted to pricing it wrongly. The guy working freaks out if people take pictures and I saw him tell a girl that she was "in their way by taking pictures", and that he "didn't need her business anyways". They do not care about customers and think they can get away with being rude and jacking up prices. You'd be better off going to Goodwill to find items. read more

As already mentioned by many, many others, the people who work here are complete schmucks. My daughter found a stuffed animal for $0.99. With tax, the price came to $1.08. I had with me $1 in quarters and a number of large bills that the store would not accept. The credit card minimum was $10. Ultimately, the cashier refused to take $1 and insisted on the eight-cent remainder. When I chose not to pay by card (which would be 10x what I wanted to pay), another employee walked up behind me and announced for the entire store to hear, "Way to disappoint your child." To an extent, I can understand not wanting to sell below the official cost (although in this case it's really quite petty), but to then attempt to humiliate the customer and rub your face in it is totally unacceptable behavior. Cursed place. Saw toxic materials (lead, zinc, arsenic, asbestos everywhere in upholstery, paint, coatings, etc.) / countless fire hazards, which is why I guess they don't want photography. As its name suggests, it's for hoarders / full of junk. Poor customer service: Owner is unpredictable and clearly needs professional mental help. Heard him get furious at a group of customers. Once they left, he escalated his anger by threatening to harm another customer. I've experienced my fair share of NYC directness, but the older woman cashier here is just incredibly, ridiculously, horribly rude. It comes across as greed -- she repriced an item AT THE COUNTER and refused to sell it to me for its original value even though I had a photo of the item with its original price tag still attached from the day prior -- she even admitted that when retagging items, she always goes for the higher price to make more money. Meanwhile, she has thousands of the same item collecting dust in the crevices of this place. I doubt she'd notice if they disappeared. Besides the repricing in front of me, she snapped at me to leave the item on the counter and gave me an attitude even though I came in extremely early (right at opening) to give her my money and was nothing but kind to her. Great collection of items. Like, seriously, I was so charmed by the painting I wanted that I considered buying it for the insane price she decided on. But it's absolutely not worth buying from her. Come here if you feel like spending a lot of money and seeing some beautiful vintage items, but know that you are indulging a very selfish person. read more

Niche collections of beautiful silverware, frames, candelabras, mirrors, b&w photos, China, rugs & more! I've come here to find pairs of drawer handles & vintage glass bottles for aftershaves. Small spaces to walk around but that's to be expected with all the great stuff they've been able to find. Not sure why this place has such poor reviews. It's basically a giant warehouse filled with "junk". Or just used stuff from the ages. Not a very experienced thrifter myself or anything but I think it's worth it to sort of just head out to Williamsburg and spend some time sifting through all of the junk that is available here. I'm a big fan of Salvage places, Thrift Stores- even Salvation Army. And places like these have so much to offer, it was freaking unbelievable. Junk is right up there too- with lots of it!!! But that's my personal excitement. While the footprint here is massive, aisles are super narrow. We didn't even know where to start because at Junk, you don't know how to and everything is tightly stacked. But from what I noticed, Junk's layout is by category: they have random wooden boxes (which we got a few) of all sizes in one nook, or you find an odd assortment of Skeleton Keys in a bin...the list goes on Since we remodeled our Bath at the time, wanted a vintagey wall clock (yes...I do have a wall clock in my Bath- doesn't anybody?)- but ended using it in my Living Room instead. I thought I might try my luck and haggle but that's a no-go here. At any rate, my old and super greasy (we were told it came from a restaurant) wall clock came at $10 and a keeper. Got some Goo Gone at home and cleaned that sucker real good. Reviews mention "the rude lady"- and honestly, we didn't come across that. In fact the guy who helped me with my clock, climbed and squeezed his skinny self to get it. So Thank You! Or the guy at the register who said they don't haggle- I took it in, thanked him, paid and kept it moving. But I agree... prices for the crap here is a bit much- but they're also unique. And of course- stuff here, is dusty- but that's all part of the game (sometimes?). If this is your shit, you wouldn't even mind the fact that you need to walk sideways to get from point A to point B, or that you probably have to hover a bit if you wanna see something that may not be in your direct view. Ok I'm screaming!!!! XD I witnessed a kind of upsetting experience at this establishment today. It didn't involve me tho so I was mindin my own business. *sips tea* It was involving the white, female store owner (?) and a black man. He was TEARING into her calling her racist and all other sorts of things. Childdd I didn't hear what happened before that but she was screaming back at him, calling him expletives, tried to say HE was racist (lol), called the cops (smh) after he had left, and then complained that they weren't there quick enough. By the time they did show up, she began tearily explaining to them what had happened (she didn't even say anything to him apparently...............). All of this IN FRONT OF CUSTOMERS.
