I really liked this location. Lots of clothes to go through. Some more expensive than others. I got this cute ford bronco shirt that I love. I think I'm in the minority here thinking Monk is a decent thrift store. I hate to be this person but I'll cop to getting skeeved out by used clothing stores because I've read too much about people getting hand foot mouth disease from those bins. Does everyone shop with rubber gloves on in these stores? I don't like the funk that a lot of thrift stores have either. HOWEVER I'm fully on board with not shopping fast fashion and buying second hand being a better alternative, so I'm trying to find a happy medium. At least Monk feels curated such that I don't feel like I have to dig too much before I find something cute. And I saw several cute items at this store. Yes, I usually do spend like $40+ on an item from here but that's less than I'd spend on a new item. I found a gorgeous mesh and beaded dress and a silk skirt that I still cherish from here. You may have to come back regularly to get lucky and find something you like, but I think they have a pretty wide selection of items. Lately I've opted to mostly rent my clothes so I still get the experience of having new clothes without buying new fast fashion but during the occasional thrift sojourn I'll stop in here to browse. read more

The store has an upstairs and a downstairs and what's nice is that the upstairs seems to be more high quality and curated while the downstairs has more of the cheaper clothes you'd expect from a pretty regular thrift store. I found tons of great options in the upstairs and the fitting rooms were so cute. It's a nice store with a good selection and a good ambiance. Even if you don't find something you love, there are tons of good options here that don't cost a fortune. read more

Horrible thrift store unless you want to pay $30-80 for a single item from H&M, Forever 21, and other cheap fast fashion brands. The store is disorganized, barely sorted by size, and certainly not sorted by type of clothing. Half of the clothes were already ripped or falling apart and stained. You might be able to find something halfway decent if you dig for an hour or so. For a real thrift shop that gets most/all of its clothing from donations, it sure operates like an upscale consignment store. read more

Where this place excels is organization for quantity. They have a HUGE selection. The bummer is, most of it is pretty basic. Not a lot of curating going on, so it feels more like a traditional thrift store but the prices are higher. Vintage doesn't belong in the name talking about the men's stuff. There was a good amount of Women's vintage though. If you shop here expect to find mall items at discounted mall prices. read more

It smells like grandma in here, really. Not that my own grandmother smells, but it's the TYPICAL old people smell they have in here. I suppose they're trying to make this place as vintage as possible, especially with the scent? I choke, I choke. I came here once before, more than a year ago, and ironically walked in just as the store was going to close in a minute (that's what she said). I still remember seeing that Coach bag behind the counter for $40. All I have to say, is that this place is a rip-off. Except the $1 final sale at the front. They have a whole bunch of brand new in tag "BITTEN by Sarah Jessica Parker" shirts that were sold at Steve & Barry's a few years ago, for less than 10 bucks, and selling it for $12.50. Clearly, they are trying to make a gigantic profit, especially for those of us who are retail-store savvy. They even sell used Old Navy tank tops for $8! "What a steal!" Also, I almost jumped when I saw a pair of Lucky Brand Jeans in my size, but it was $65 and used. Oh well, it was flare anyway. I'm glad they have such a huge selection of records that were on sale for just 50 cents! Too bad I don't have a record player. This store is just too small, and the clothes look like something my mom would walk out of with 5 shopping bags, which is usually not good. read more

I found this place online while hunting for used and vintage clothing. I walked in, picked up the first few garments I saw and waited online to pay. The items were taken away from me and I was told by a woman that I was inconsiderate, among other things. There were no signs or indication that what I picked up was off limits in what is a filthy crammed and crowded indoor junk yard. What a bizarre experience. The rest of this convo went south quickly. If you want to know where NY gets its reputation for rude,visit this place. You'll get a close up look of a genuine Karen who I'm certain must be the "mother" in Mother of Junk. A pretty awesome thrift shop. When I walked in I thought for sure that this was going to be one of those vintage stores where everything is secondhand but costs more than if you bought it new. I was wrong. The quality of the clothing was pretty good. The prices were reasonable. And there was plenty of interesting looking clothes. If you have small feet they also have a good selection of shoes. I got a scarf and a sweater, I'm happy with both. There are only two changing rooms if you want to try something on, a line can form pretty quickly. I will definitely be back to look through again the next time I'm in the area. read more

I can waste several hours in this store. I absolutely love thrift stores, especially the well curated ones like Monk. They have tons of women's clothing but also a very decent men's section too. I like that they have a well selected inventory of dresses and shoes. Lots of name brands, but for so much cheaper! I think the last time I was here, I lost about 2 hours just browsing. Just a forewarning, the dressing room is usually occupied, so you might find yourself undressing in the aisles, which is fine, since there are so many things crammed into this store, no one will see you naked. Fun displays and racks on racks of clothes to choose from. There were deals galore. I like the way dresses, tops, jeans were collated together to easily look through everything. It was a fun place to look around. I didn't see anything I wanted on this occasion but like most good thrift stores , you gotta keep rummaging. If I had more time, I'm sure I would have found some gems. But I enjoyed perusing and would go back next time I'm on a Brooklyn vintage hunt. read more

Rude staff, pricey clothes. Second-hand shops have a reputation of employing snobby staff and this place is no exception. I get that working retail sucks, especially on the weekend. But why the rudeness? The people on your front line are the heart of your store, and when they're unwelcoming to shoppers it makes us want to go elsewhere. Prices are on-par with H&M. This place is chockful of STUFF. It's stuffed to the brim of all these clothes, books, shoes, household goods, you name it. I do have to say, that the owners know their designer brands, because I did notice that a lot of those items - Nanette Lepore, BCBGMaxazria, etc. - were priced significantly higher than other items. I saw a pretty Nanette Lepore tank for $40, vintage Gucci shoes for $125, new with tags Kate Spade tote for $65 etc. You get the idea. But the selection itself is pretty nice - gently used/like new clothing, and good condition shoes. The non-designer items (H&M, Forever 21) are priced pretty cheaply, like $5-$15 for shirts, etc. There's a lot of vintage items here too, for you true vintage buffs (me, I'm more of a designer dud person, as indicated by my reviews). The back has a lot of records and knick knacks. There were some old telephones in the front, and this one lady got so excited over a pair of vintage binoculars. I also saw an old guy (A customer) reading a book and rocking out to the music back there. SO let's just say that the clientele here is pretty interesting. This place is NOT for the thrift-store shy because it's just packed with stuff. But if you don't mind getting your hands dirty, come stop by this place. read more

It's a colorful array of fun in here - albeit crowded and not sooner conducive to browsing when you happen to be there at the same time as even a couple other shoppers. Packed with an array of clothing items from the 50s-90s(?). If you're in a rush, I wouldn't suggest going here... or any vintage shop, really. You need to be patient and take your time looking through things. The clothing is in relatively good condition, however, it is pricey for vintage. At the prices *most* items are sold for here (minus the $1 rack) you are probably better off buying something brand new. Make sure to check out the sunglasses. read more

Been going here for years but this place has unfortunately changed in some disappointing ways :( They still have a couple nice finds and the prices aren't any worse then at Beacons Closet but the selection of great stuff has been seriously lacking as of late. Worse then that, the people working here now have the typical BadBrooklynAttitude™ (besides one nice employee working at the back by the dressing rooms when i was there) Now don't get me wrong, i'm not out shopping for the nice attitudes or nice environments but if the ill-tempered cashier wasn't bad enough, the music was AWFUL. I always kind of admired this place for having chill employees and great punk or goth music playing at all times. Everytime I go into monk, I find so many good tops and dresses. As for the their prices, magnificent(especialy with their 25% off ticket). Monk also has an extremely helpful and super sweet staff. They're easy going and offer helpful fashion advice, styling tips and they make you feel comfortable and confident when you step out of the dressing room to get a better look at your outfit. What I love the most is that unlike the other new/used stores in the area, Monk has so many different areas of new/used and vintage at AFFORDABLE prices. Keep up the good work guys! read more

I get pricing things higher if its vintage, but you literally could find the same stuff or even better at any other resale stuff in NY (Beacon's closet, Buffalo Exchange, Crossroads Trading Co, etc). The staff was literally speaking negatively against someone when I was in there (not sure if about customer, but either way it's inappropriate work chat). It's unfortunate because I believe its donations only, so they just price things however they want that doesn't even make sense. There was a shirt from a chinese website priced at 65? Not worth your time unless you don't mind buying items more than original value. read more

This is one of the best vintage thrift shops I've ever visited. I come to NY once a year from CA and make sure that I stop in at Monk to get some new duds. Their prices are reasonable and they always have some cool unique pieces of clothing that I wouldn't be able to find anywhere else. Definitely a must go to if you are in NY! read more

I had to come back and update this review. I was cleaning out my closets not too long ago and rather than throwing everything away I decided to donate and get some store credit. I (WAS) a regular here because who doesn't love a thrift shop? But, I was so turned off by my last experience there I won't be going back for a while. I decided to donate six bags worth of clothes shoes and handbags to Monk in hopes of just getting it off my hands. I wasn't trying to rig the system of getting more than my fair share of store credit or anything. I brought stuff in and they were so rude to me. They were repeating back to me "store policy" is three bags per person (but i brought my bf with me). I kindly told them I understood and was hoping they could just donate it, didn't even want the credit. They were ignoring me as I brought in the rest of my bags and i was so upset I just left without my discount. Still haven't been back three months later. read more

I walked into this store to find a wrap around purse because mine broke and began looking in the pile of purses and i am guessing the owner or employee got mad at me because i was talking on the phone with my mother and browsing through the bags, he began yelling at me and then when i told him he was being rude he rolled his eyes, Idk if he was watching me and thought because I have brown skin that I was trying to steal his things at this thrift store or what his deal was, but If i were you i would steer clear of this place, i hope all new Yorkers aren't like this man. read more

This joint was really for a person who wants to dress NY fabulous and is on the thin side. That is just not me. However it has an extremely comfortable couch. And a truly epic selection of hats. I spent $56 dollars on shoes and a dress in here today. It was busy with a long wait for the changing room. The changing rooms are tiny. As the items I tried on didn't suit I put them back and decided to just get the shoes. When approaching the cashier I saw a lovely navy dress. It was size medium. I decided I couldn't face the line for the changing room again so decided to buy it. I went home and promptly tried it on only to find it was too tight on the shoulder. I went back to the same cashier (same day) and asked could I exchange it for another size, different dress or get a store credit. The dress clearly hadn't been worn and contained the original tags. She said no it was against their sales policy to do exchanges. This was never mentioned to me when I purchased it (hours previously). I didn't see any signs showing that sales policy. It may exist, but if it does it's not obvious. In life you always have the opportunity to show others kindness and help them out. Neither assistant seemed in anyway bothered with my disappointment. In fact they seemed to delight in my sadness at the error I made. I walked away knowing I will never return to the store. read more

** ATTEMPTED TO CHARGE SALES TAX FOR CLOTHING ITEM IN NYC ** This place used to be so cool, what happened? I took a few people from out of town here this weekend. Everything is obviously completely overpriced in this store, but I did find a scarf I liked for $6. Actually, it had no price, so the sales people up front decided it was $6. But when I went to pay, the salesgirl with the short pink and yellow (pink and green?) hair added on sales tax which is illegal in New York City. When I questioned her, she said a scarf wasn't really a clothing item. (!!) Okay? This felt shady, but I didn't really want to argue in front of my friends, so I just handed over my debit card. The girl then said I needed to spend over $10 to use my card. Funny, I would have thought if they are so desperate for an extra .52 that they would take any sale they could get. Anyway, I didn't have any cash, so I took my card back and left the scarf. If you go to tax.ny.gov, it clearly says scarves (and wraps and shawls) are exempt from tax. Shall not be bringing anyone here anymore and shall stick to the Goodwill shops that are all over town and not full of such nonsense. read more

Very disappointed by their customer service here. I visited with the specific goal of hunting down an 80's band tee and a red letterman jacket for a Halloween costume. I know those are specific items so I was bummed, but not disappointed when I couldn't find them. I approached the counter to ask if they ever got those items in. The woman working at the counter responded by saying "Every day". I asked "Can I leave my name and can you call me if you get those items in?" Her response was "No, I don't think so." followed by a blank stare. Whoever owns this store-- train your employees to provide better service. I didn't get an apology or explanation of why they couldn't call me. I ended up awkwardly backing out of the store. I don't think I'll be back. read more

When my friend told me he wanted to go Thrifting when he came for a visit, I searched for the stores that had menswear. This was recommended and delivered. There menswear offering was GREAT. Reasonable in price, but a little more for some of the brand name items. The dressing rooms were like telephone booths in that they are very small. Next to it are 2 other shops equally good. Brooklyn hit the nail on the head with having three so close as there are very little menswear stores there. It is the first stop on the L train from Manhattan for those of you worried about leaving the city. The ride is over before you can get off that app on your iPhone. Definitely do it! read more

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness for Monk Vintage. Starving, hysterically clothed in granny sweaters and pop art prints, dragging themselves through MacDougal Street at dawn looking for a vintage fix. Angel-headed hipsters behind the counter, dusting the ancient vinyl and book collections, and rearranging the starry jewelry and housewares displayed in the window by the machinery of night. This is a great little thrift shop tucked away on MacDougal, a great place to hit when you're meandering around NYU and Washington Square Park. You do have to dig for the bargains, as it is with vintage in any NYC shop. This store is well sorted, easy to find your shoe size or length of frock you're looking to rock. Check their great selection of eyewear and salvaged luggage and say hi to the ladies and gentlemen hard at work - friendly counter encounters go a long way here. read more
