This is a gorgeous park with plenty of parking (at least when I went on a weekday. I can't say what it'll be like on the weekend)! There are covered picnic tables and a place to grill. The bathrooms are well taken care of and didn't smell like other outhouse style bathrooms. The Castle Trail was gorgeous and the Walker Home Castle Ruins were amazing. I can't believe someone would build such a grand home up there in the middle of no where. Since it's spring time there were many lovely wildflowers in bloom, which added to the beauty of the place. The sky looked tumultuous, but it was beautiful. We hiked along the Castle Trail taking our time and also up to the Summer White House foundation. Note, the Summer White House was never actually built. It was just a dream. The whole round trip took us about 2 hours and it was about 3.8 miles. I was with my dad's friends who are in their 60's and my dad who is overweight. Some of the hills on the return hike were harder for them, but it was manageable and we all made it back alive and before the rain started. I love this hike. It is so close to Denver. There is good vertical, so you feel like you got a good workout in. There can be lots of mountain bikers, but if you just step aside and let them pass it is not a problem. The views of Red Rocks Amphitheater and of Denver are lovely. read more

Great park/open space. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because it is so busy. You will see families with strollers, mountain bikers, hikers, joggers, lots of owners with dogs all on one trail within 5 minutes. I still enjoyed it and will come back soon. read more

We had finished checking out Red Rocks Amphitheatre and Colorado Music Hall of Fame and still had another 5 hours to kill before had to be the airport. So I fired up google maps, found that the Mount Falcon Park had some amazing views and it was only a 40min drive away, and that's how we ended up here. Unfortunately by the time we actually arrived at the parking lot, the weather had changed tremendously and from our spot at the top of the mountain peak, it wasn't just spectacular views that we encountered but also some spectacularly cold winds too! The three guys I was with decide to still go on a hike, but I found a picnic table, just off the upper parking lot trail, and sat there and admired the view and communed with nature. There was such a wonderfully crisp, vegetal scent in the air, but the wind was pretty sharp and 10mins later, the boys also joined me in my cosy nook. So we didn't really hike any trails, but I can attest the views were really as spectacular as the ones showing up on google maps, and while we didn't get any exercise, there were tons of Instagram-worthy photo moments, just from where we were sitting. Which makes me reckon I really need to try and come back for a return visit in better weather if possible! BTW, there were no toilet stalls located here, just two parking lots and for my two cents, the view/ trail from the upper parking lot is more spectacular than the one from the lower parking lot, so don't take the 1st turn for parking that you see, but keep driving up. Also the drive up is pretty cool - we saw tons of deer herds just off the roadside. It's on paved roads except for the last 5-7 miles, which was fairly basic, but doable in an SUV. Beautiful, breathtaking views in the this park. If you want to do about a two hour hike, head up the left from the parking lot on the castle trail, then come back down the turkey trot trail. Fair warning, the castle trail is very steep uphill and quite rocky. But a good workout. Depending on your condition. For many of you, it's probably just a light warm up. Turkey trot trail is mostly downhill and easy but also rocky. Lots of bikers on the uphill portion, but none on the downhill (turkey trot). Beautiful views from up here so highly recommend it. Just be sure and bring your camera. read more

A great hiking spot very close to the Denver area... The downside is that being close to Denver means this place is constantly swarmed with "weekend warriors" who come up here to zoom around like maniacs on their mountain bikes. Most of the trails here are open to mountain bikers and the best trails are too narrow to accommodate both bikers and hikers at the same time... so the bikers just run you down! Avoid this place like the plague on weekends! Come on a weekday, before 5pm, and most of the trouble makers will still be suck under the florescent lights in their office buildings. read more

This is an excellent hiking trail for beginning moderate to advanced moderate hikers. The final destination brings you to the castle ruins, built by entrepreneur John Walker in 1909 before it was stuck down by lightning in 1918. The trail has amazing views of mountains ridges that perfectly frame the city of to the East. I have never hiked this trail during sunrise, but I imagine it would be a beautiful experience. The Mount Falcon Park East entrance has two trails that lead to the castle ruins, the Castle Trail and the Turkey Trot Trail. These two trails intersect about half way and form a single trail leading up the mountain. The Castle Trail is slightly shorter and more difficult. The Turkey Trot trail adds about 1 mile in total to the hike, but is more of a moderate climb and provides arguably better views. Round trip, this hike is about 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 miles, depending on which way you go. If you are hiking the trail for the first time, with beginning hikers or with children, I would suggest driving a little further west to the Mount Falcon Park West entrance, located at 21004 Mt. Falcon Road in Indian Hills. This is a fair more moderate hike and only about 3 miles round trip, so you don't have to spend an entire day hiking to get to the ruins. If you get really lucky, you might even run into Bill Murray here when he takes his occasional trips to Colorado. I can only hope to be so lucky one day. read more

We had a beautiful morning hike/walk here. We arrived around 10am and the top car park was busy, still plenty of parking in the bottom lot. By the time we were leaving (about 1pm) there were cars all the way down the street! The trails were pretty good for the most part. It snowed a few days ago and I was concerned that the trails would be icy. It was a bit of a mix, some dry areas, some slushy/muddy, some snowy and we only came across one icy patch. I was carrying a 3 week old baby so I found a way around the ice. Good to see that there are toilets near the main trail entrance and that there were things to look at along the way, like lookout spots and the old ruins of a castle. Great place for an easy hike! read more

Ive ended up living on both sides of this park and can say that at both homes, this was our go-to for quick hikes. It was out solace to read amongst the trees. It was a place to challenge ourselves physically and mentally. I prefer the Indian Hills entrance as it is more woodsy, but also love the Morrison entrance which is a bit more rocky, sunny, etc. read more

Went to the upper parking lot to watch the sunset. Arrived early so that we could get a nice picnic area. Unfortunately a woman and her family proceeded to come and deposit all their gear right in front of us and then have a photo shoot of her kids. She made loud clicking sounds with her mouth and yelled at the kids to look her way. After ten minutes of this we decided to leave. Atrocious behavior, rude, inconsiderate and abysmal manners. She was totally clueless of proper behavior. If she had asked if it was okay to take some photos of the kids we would have been polite and said yes. read more

What a great hike! Saw the reviews before and heard it gets packed so I headed up from the West parking lot at around 7a, finished at 930a and saw both West parking lots almost full. I parked in the upper lot to go take the Castle Trail- see Walker Home Ruins and the Summer White House, which were both easy hikes from the West side. An offshoot from Castle is the Two Dogs Trail which shows Denver skyline in the distance. I heard the East trailhead was a bit tougher so I took the West with my pup. Lots of dogs on the way down and families with small kids. There is a port-a-potty and also extra doggy poop bags at the entrance. Most of Castle Trail was out in the open and the offshoots were shaded. Only a 30 minute drive from Denver and free! read more

Mount falcon is a great place to hike or mountain bike or even horseback ride very close to Denver. The trail is a little steep as it is in the foothills, but it is doable. You do have to share the Castle trail from the Morrison side with mountain bikers, but most have been very polite. The parking lot can fill up easily especially on an afternoon even on a weekday. There is a alternative area to park at the top of the trail head which is actually where Mount Falcon Park is Located. I am actually posting from the lower lot and trail head in Morrison. There are gender neutral bathrooms times two there is a boot scraper for muddy shoes or boots and there is one small picnic shelter. The trail maps are posted and there are trail maps available to carry with you though you probably wouldn't need one. You can do a great 3 mile loop by going out on cattle trail and then either turning right on turkey trot which is a pedestrian only trail or you can continue on Castle trail to the top which is about 1 1/2 miles and then take turkey trot back down which is a little over a mile and a half read more

Located near Morrison, this Open Space area is free, and allows dogs on leashes. There are pit toilets, but while the map shows drinking water, I couldn't locate it, so make sure you bring plenty of your own for yourself and your pups. I only had the opportunity to explore some of the west end of the park. Even on this busy Memorial Day weekend, we managed to find parking there and ate lunch at one of the numerous picnic tables near the Castle Trailhead. There are other picnic tables located at the east entrance, and inside the park, near the junction of Castle and Walker's Dream Trails. All the trails in this park are multi-use (foot, bike, horse) except the Turkey Trot, which is hiker only, and located on the east side. The portion of Castle Trail we experienced was wide and only moderately steep in some places. Besides walking through a beautiful meadow, it is nicely forested. I would qualify it as easy, and even saw women pushing sturdy strollers on it. Just off the Castle Trail, about a half a mile from the west parking, you can see the ruins of John Brisben Walker's mountain castle. Quite a few walls and a tall chimney remain. No parkouring allowed, there's a fence surrounding. Turn off the Castle Trail to get more of a work-out on Two-Dog Trail (I had two dogs with me, how could I NOT take this trail?) which is narrow and steep. It is only 0.3 miles long, and dead-ends with a beautiful view of downtown Denver in the distance and the plains beyond. After returning to the Castle Trail, continue heading northeast to find the turn off for Walker's Dream Trail, which leads to the ruins (read, foundation and cornerstone) of the Summer White House. This short trail is similar to the Two-Dog, but with more switchbacks it was a bit easier. Summer White House, you ask?? I know, it's the first I had ever heard of it, too. You'll have to read up on the history at the website! From there, follow the sign for a scenic overlook and you can look down onto Red Rocks! There are many other trails to explore, and you could even take Castle Trail all the way to the other end of the park. Also, apparently there's a tower of some kind atop Mount Falcon itself which allows you to see the ruins, Red Rocks, and the plains, and from Eagle Eye Shelter you can see Indian Hills, Evergreen, and Mount Evans. An extra bonus for me was meeting a star Yelper on the trail! Had I been thinking, I would have let Michael S. pass me unawares, since I was in fact hauling dog poop on my back, but I was so shocked to recognize him that I said hello. This was a lovely hike. I am rather new at hiking and found this to be challenging. Parts of the trail are very steep and when there's snow on them they can be quite slippery. Walking sticks here would be beneficial. We found great views and enjoyed our time here today. read more

Great hiking for the whole family. It's not too steep and gives your eyes amazing views. You can come and go for free and with access to multiple trails. It probably took me and my friends about 5 hours to see everything (we're in our youth). We love to play Pokemon Go here, because there's lots of Pokestops to keep you exercising outside all day. read more

This is a great hike with some history! There are several different trails on this hike & there is an old abandoned home (remains of "Walker Castle") from the early 1900s. It was owned by the guy named Walker who bought Cosmopolitan among other successful businesses. The hike has some great views and is pretty wide/open. It's great for families, kids, dogs,etc. There is free parking & the trail is good for beginners. It's a moderate/easy hike. It is open during winter months as well. You can see the Red Rocks from here. You can mountain bike, horse back ride and picnic here as well. read more

Mt Falcon is a free open space area in Jefferson county a skip away from Morrison. The drive is curvy and you may easily get lost if your chatting away during your journey. That or plow into a surfboard that doubles as a house marker. Moderate trails that everyone can enjoy. Families, friends on mountain bikes, 50+ couples walking hand in hand, and happy pups can be found enjoying the fresh mountain air and the spectacular views. Early worm gets the picnic table that sits near an edge so you feel like you're in the Sound of Music peering off the mountain side upon Denver . Why do I return? It's close, not overly popular (at least not with my hours), and the memories. feel free to borrow one or two but I'll hunt you down if you make copies of my diary. Took the Castle Trail up Mount Falcon and caught the Turkey Trot Trail back down. The hike up was pretty intense in the hot sun - there aren't any trees shading you, but there are some beautiful views on the way up. Also, the castle trail is open to hikers and mountain bikers, so there's a bit of hopping out of the way if you're a hiker; and I'm sure it's a bit frustrating for the bikers to pedal up past groups and having to slow down on their way down. Taking the Turkey Trot down was a great choice. Bikers aren't allowed on this trail, not that I have anything against bikers; it's just nice to take a leisurely walk and take photos without being in people's way. The views were so pretty on this trail, and it's very shaded by trees. There were a few steep parts, so it's a little bit of fun technical hiking, but overall it's pretty level and easy. read more

Mount Falcon is probably my favorite place to hike within a short distance of Denver (I'm not including Chautauqua because driving on 36 is horrendous). The first time I came here, I drove out to the more western entrance near Evergreen because we wanted to check out the castle. As others have mentioned, this entrance provides a much easier and faster route to the castle, which is definitely worth seeing! It's barely standing but it's still pretty cool. However, what really made me love this park was when I was inadvertently routed to the eastern Morrison entrance by my phone's GPS. When I go on a hike, I go to get a good workout. The beautiful scenery and the peacefulness of nature don't hurt either, but my end goal is exercise. And Mount Falcon, specifically the east lot, is a good work out! Theoretically I suppose you could get the exact same workout from the west lot but you'd have to go downhill then uphill and where's the fun in that? My favorite thing to do is hike up to the top, enjoy the views, then run back down. While it's probably not as good of a workout as, say, running UP the mountain, my legs get SO sore every time. It's a relatively easy run down too; there aren't any impossibly rocky or steep declines to trip you up. Well worth checking out for both the scenery and the exercise. read more

Went for a little hike on Sunday and it was awesome! Trails were pretty easy at the east entrance, parking can get packed quickly but I got lucky! Round trip was almost 4 miles but only about 1.5 of incline. My only wish was the front two trails would be a little long but that's about it! Enjoy! read more

Mt Falcon is awesome. There are so many trails here, and a couple of very cool ruins to check out. Makes your brain go places, imagining what life must have been like for the people that once lived (or at least vacationed) in this now vacant shell. I haven't done all of the trails, but there are so many that even on a busy day, you can find your own piece of nature without feeling too overwhelmed by humanity. Bring a dog. Yelp has hiking reviews? Interesting, and cool. I have been here about 4-5 times, and there has not been once that I did not like it. the round trip is around 10 miles if I remember correctly. There can be some steep spots for those that are less athletic, but the views are totally worth it. Truly. The first time I made it up here it was for a sunrise hike,and looking down on Denver was next to none. Also on the top you will find that there is an old house from the early 1900s' that was struck by lighting and brunt down. The drive from most places in Denver tends to be around 30 minutes, so super simple to make it out for a quick hike. the one big don side is the traffic. As I said it is far too close to Denver not to have traffic. The worst kind is all the Bikes!. I know they need a place too, but it can get annoying. The second downside that you should know is the parking lot fills up rather early, so if you want a spot get out there early. If you have not done this one before do it, and do it now.... just leave me a parking spot. read more

East trail head - I only did Turkey trot and looped back down on Castle Trail. Good strenuous incline but not too steep, if you're in shape you can jog mostly....I have to make frequent stops though. Clear trail the whole way, some packed dirt with rocks sticking out, some rubbly on steep parts. Descent is wide and flatter. More tree cover at top of Turkey trot, descent is open - watch out for hot days. Outhouse bathroom very clean. West trail head - long curvy drive up, nice loop on Parlamee at the top of the Mt. AMAZING view, can see forever. Some incline workout but not as steep as East side. More flat/down hill running, more tree cover than east side- At the trail head I took a right and went on Parlamee and looped around to the left back to the entrance. Outhouse bathrooms stinky. read more

Love love love all the trails on mount falcon. I've done turkey trot and castle trail, as well as a couple others less memorable. The hike has views from all angles and also offers a little historical knowledge for those eager to learn. This makes it a great trail for families and for those just looking for a beautiful view. (Turkey trot is NOT for families with little ones) castle trail takes you to ruins and walker dream will take you to an interesting point if interest. Highly recommended to arrive before 9 am as trail gets packed early. read more

I came in early March right after a snowy day. That means it was snowy on the trail and muddy. We decided to bring our small white dog. All this, in hindsight, sounds like a terrible idea but we did it anyway! The trail is very very easy to follow and manage. It's not terribly hilly and it provides great views of the mountains and city. There is also the ruins of a house up there that was pretty neat to see. We plan on returning on better conditions and enjoying it more. read more

Great find for a hike close to Denver. Easy to get to, no entrance fee, bathrooms at the trailhead, several trails to choose from, great view of Red Rocks. And you get to drive through the cute Main Street of Morrison. If you park on the east side, the first 2-3 miles are pretty much uphill- great for a good workout if you're looking for that. I'm in pretty decent shape and I enjoyed it. However, if you have small kids or aren't from altitude, consider parking on the west side, where you can meander around on some fairly flat trails. read more

Great open space! You get a full view of downtown Denver to the east and a beautiful view of the mountains to the west! The west entrance has a lot of short loops of trails so you can see it all without going too far. Its busy on the weekends making the parking situation a bit messy on good weather days but the weekdays aren't bad at all. read more

I did a search on the All Trails app for a dog friendly hike and Mt. Falcon was near the top of the results. It's about 30 minutes outside of Denver, so it only required a short drive West to check it out. We opted to hike the following loop: Parmalee Trail to Meadow to Castle. It was a sunny Sunday morning in May, but we only came across a pair of trail runners and a single mountain biker, who was moving at a slow pace due to the elevation climb. The Parmalee Trail was wide enough to yield to traffic, mostly shaded by trees (with the exception of about 15 minutes in direct sun), and varied between easy to moderate hiking. The Meadow and Castle Trails were busier with families walking, hikers, and mountain bikers. These paths were much more even and well carved out than the Parmalee Trail. This open space in Jefferson County boasts great views of the mountains and you can spot Denver far out in the distance. While we were pulling into the parking lot, we spotted several deer near the trailhead. If you're looking to escape the city for a few hours and to enjoy nature while you're getting some exercise, I'd definitely recommend Mt. Falcon for a day hike. read more
