I do now know anyone laid to rest at Gate of Heaven, Mrs. K. and I stopped through here to see the final resting places of some famous people. Gate of Heaven and Kensico Cemetery are adjacent to each other but are operated separately. Kensico was founded in 1889 as a non-sectarian burial ground. Gate of Heaven Cemetery, on the other hand, was established later and is owned and operated by the Catholic Archdiocese of New York. Certainly there are more crosses and other religious icons here at Gate of Heaven. We were able to easily find what we wanted to see. New York Yankees coach Billy Martin. Hollywood actor James Cagney. Baseball player Babe Ruth's grave was easy to spot, adorned with ball caps and such. They made it seem like they had shipped caskets to other states, but the shipment was delayed a couple days because they really didn't know what they were doing. Some of the smaller things were flubbed as well: they said they'd send the death certificates in the casket itself and then didn't, we chose one inscription for the casket and they ended up doing a different one. At no point did we get an apology or even a "thank you for your patience on this matter". The receiving facility was part of a larger chain, and the Pelham folks made it seem like we wouldn't be getting a personal touch from them, though the smaller company screwed up anyway. There should be plenty of competitors that deserve your business more than these guys.

When my 46-year old husband died, all I wanted was a cremation; not a funeral, not a casket, not a fancy urn, not memorial candles or cards, not any of the upselling garbage Ned was trying to hawk. He asked questions in a way that made me extremely uncomfortable and upset, as well as upsetting my friend the Reverend, my mother, my sister, and my sister-in-law. Ned reeled at how he'd have to "get extra guys to help" handle my husband's 300lb body and went into morbid detail about what kind of cardboard container they'd have to reinforce to hold my husband. He went on and on about how I was "lucky this isn't Texas because you'd have to embalm the body before cremation." I did NOT need any of this. I asked very specific questions and was treated like a child, with no specific answers given. As a brand-new widow, being treated like a child and charged nearly five thousand dollars to be treated like a child is mind-blowing, disgraceful, and an abomination. I get it, Ned, you're tired and are used to pushing people around who are grief-ridden. What you did was disgusting.

At the cemetary, as the priest blessed the coffin, I recognized that the funeral home embossed the wrong name on the outside of my father's coffin! There was nothing I could do at that moment because of distraught family members. If I were there alone, I would have stopped the burial! Instead, I immediately contacted the funeral home. To this day, four months later, Matt and the funeral home have not corrected the problem. I have called a number of times. I would NOT recommend this funeral home because of their insincerity and refusal to take responsibility for their mistake. The idea of my father's coffin having the wrong name on it makes me crazy on a daily basis. My father has gone to meet his Maker in a coffin with a mistake that will stay there virtually forever. My family worked with them to make sure that we were able to honor our child the way we wanted. The staff at Farenga was very helpful and above all, understanding and kind. It was something I never imagined I would have to do. However, the funeral service was a beautiful moment of peace.
