We go here at least once a year, usually for the Yuletide rennfest... this year we decided to check out Time Travelers Weekend and had a blast. We travel all the way from Baltimore. We don't even bother with the maryland rennaissance Faire because the PA one is so much more accessible. Most, if not all, of the shops have ramps. Though some shops, like the dice shop, are so tiny inside its a big mistake to take a wheelchair inside. The women's bathroom/privy before you go through the gates needs a lot of work. Toilets are clogged before the gates even open at 11am. Some toilets rock when you sit on them because they're not properly affixed to the floor. There's only one accessible stall and it was clogged this time which meant I had to use a much too small stall, with the door open because my chair was in the way. The food is, as you can imagine, expensive. $9 for chicken tenders, which I found dry. I got an iced coffee at The Dark Knight... and the server seemed angry to be there. She told us there weren't any lids for the cup, when there were plenty of other cups with lids... driving downhill in a wheelchair while carrying a cup, with liquid sloshing all over the place is not my idea of fun. And it wasn't even any good. We were super stoked to find the TARDIS. And I have my eye on a fancy hat I want to buy when we return for their Halloween experience. I hope I have more money then cuz handmade goods can be costly. read more

Asked to go to the distillery, however, was told that "hundreds of people" are about to come out of the murder mystery show and that it was going to be awhile to go because there was only 2 employees working. They used to give out free tastings but I understand they need to make some money! We recently went on a Sunday at 12:00pm and we're the only ones there, it was great! We went to a wedding there recently. The appetizers were good. The main course was terrible. It was the toughest Filet I ever had. Sent all but 2 bites back. The broccoli was old, poor flavor. Main course was served cold. I feel bad if the folks had to pay the full price. They certainly were taken advantage of. The wait staff was good. read more

Conveniently located right by the PA Renaissance Fair. After a day of walking, Mount Hope will feel like an oasis. The location itself is kind of like a souvenir shop with wines, trinkets, shirts, etc. The bar area is fairly large and staff is welcoming and happy to chat. Obviously during peak seasons (wine trails, the fair) it can get very busy and they do their best to keep things moving. The wines are decent to good. They tend to be sweeter and I'd say they work best as dessert wines. Plenty of choices; maybe a smidge high for what they are. I recommend the Ice Wine if they have it in. Save the bottle for a cold, wintry night and enjoy with some baked goods. read more

We treated friends to a mystery dinner at Mt Hope. The mansion and atmosphere are lovely. The actors and the mystery were somewhat entertaining, and the actors really seemed to enjoy playing their parts. I'll say that as a murder mystery, it's a little too forced and pressed for time. The adlibs and happy presentation helped make that okay. The dinner. The best I can say is no one is likely to get sick from it, as I'm certain every single bit was fully cooked before being frozen, trucked in, and warmed in their kitchen. We had 'Swedish Meatballs' that were neither Swedish nor identifiable meat. They were round, so there's that. The soup was salty... very salty... and the surface had congealed during transport. Luckily the rolls were hard enough to break open the layer of goo on the little crock of soup. The main course was probably chicken, at one time. Somebody in a factory somewhere injected a cheesy substance into it, and then breaded and deep fried it. I think it had Campbell's onion soup poured over it after being defrosted (mostly) and warmed. Cocktails... the poor ladies behind the bar had a menu of six or so to work with. They did their best, but professional cocktail makers they were not. At $14 per glass, one might expect something good to excellent. They tried, but one was plenty and when the glass full of ice melted to dilute the flavor they were kind of okay. We left the glasses half full on our table. The evening totaled up to $250 for four people, plus tips, and gave us about three hours of 'kind of' interesting entertainment. I'd pay to see the actors do a show again, but I doubt we will ever repeat the dinner experience. The final indignity... during the wrap-up, while they had all the customers in a little theater, they closed up all the bathrooms in the mansion and told people they'd have to use the ones in the winery store. The path out for the evening was roped off to force people through the store, like cattle in a chute. One more shot at the money, right? read more

We were confused when we pulled up. There was thousands of cars in the parking lot when we pulled up. I was under the impression that they were all here for the winery and brewery. I don't fully understand the setup, because they had a building for the winery but the location was where the bottle sales is at. We went there and sampled some wine. Whatever you wanted to sample at no cost. I purchased a couple of bottles of wine. The wines were good. This is not really a place where you can have a glass and sit down. read more

If I could give this 0 stars I would ( This weekend my friends and I headed to the PA renaissance faire. They have be there previously and told me how great the experience was at the winery right outside the gates. We needed to take a quick trip to our car and thought it was a perfect chance to do a tasting and maybe get a few bottles of wine. We walked up to the bar and were greeted by a server and helped immediately. We paid and started our tasting, another larger group came up and was being helped by the same server and we were both all being helped in a great speed and great customer service. We had one wine tasting and we're discussing to get our next when another staff member announced very abruptly that we needed to move because there was a reservation for where we were standing. There was no other space at the bar to move for my group nor the other. This winery does single wine tastings at a time, which is different then other experiences I have had. Other groups that were there before us shifted down as much as they could so we could squeeze down. Apparently we were still in the way for this other group and we were now being yelled at by the other staff member which at this point by observing how she was interacting with the other staff she could possibly be the manager. While the staff member was pouring our 2nd tasting the manager(?) yelled at us and the server helping us. The server then told her that we were going to move to the back once we get our 2nd tasting. I felt bad for the server by the way she was being spoken to by her manager(?). Once we were in the back and finished our 2nd tasting there was absolutely no space for us to go and get our second tasting since we weren't allowed to go to the place where the reservation was coming in. At this point I was feeling very frustrated and overwhelmed and didn't want to spend an extended period of time when I could go back to the renaissance faire. I found a way on the end where the reservation was coming and asked the manager(?) to see if I could get a partial refund since it wasnt worth finishing the wine tasting. She told me that I need to speak to the person who helped me and walked away and stood next to the register. 5 minutes pasted of her staring at me and no reservation in sight when she yelled at the staff asking who helped me. The server came over to me and I asked for a refund and no questions were asked since it was clear what the problem was. I handed them my receipt and the server then handed my receipt to the manager(?) and the manager(?) gave her the refund to give to me. I don't understand why the manager(?) couldn't process the refund with me and seemed as if she was ignoring me and couldn't bother to speak to me. I am so disappointed in this experience and hope this doesn't happen to anyone else seeing as the rest of the staff very relatively helpful and kind to everyone. * would like to add that I have worked in customer service for years and understand that people do have bad days but this was such a horrible experience I felt the need to give a review* read more

I wish I had a photo to share. My wife and I attended the "Murder Mystery Dinner" at the Mount Hope Estate and Winery for the first time. Food was fair (honestly better than I had expected). Service was very good. The entertainment was absolutely fantastic. Having attended other murder mystery dinners... i was afraid I would be disappointed. Looks like last year was my last year coming. I am infuriated that I took off a day from work to attend expecting to buy my ticket the day of as usual. People come and go all day. I went to here last weekend without plan ..but i had a good time with tried a lot of wines and services was very nice and funny . The price is ok ...cause I don't know much about price about alcohol but start 9.99 to $20 ..if you buy 12 bottle to up , you will have 20% off ...that is not bad at all . Around there have speak building like castles ..you can check it out around but I guess they make small tour for you ...( not sure about it ) But absolutely I will come back again and I will buy a case lol read more

We went to the Murder Mystery dinner and it was by far the worst one I ever attended. To top it off the dinner was the worst food we ever had at a restaurant. We stopped at Burger King on the way home. The salisbury steak was virtually uncooked and was like eating raw hamburger. The Eggplant parm was also way undercooked. It was very hard as the eggplant wasn't cooked. The actual building was very nice and this could have been a lot better. read more

I did not plan on coming to the estate but I'm glad did. I love the variety of wines and knick knacks on display. What really set the winery apart was the Renaissance theme that spared no detail within. From the medieval accents to the music, this place boasted era appropriate touches that made this place so interesting. I did not try the wine since I had gotten lost before I pulled in to let my daughter use the rest room. I had a long drive ahead of me. I will certainly make a point to sample some of their reds. As far as it being a fun experience, with great service, I am sure I will not be dissapointed. I look forward to revisit and update this review soon! read more

a group of 8 of us enjoyed the Murder Mystery Dinner Show based on the game "Fallout". Actors were A W E S O M E . . . The dinner was excellent,. salad - meatloaf and pork loin with a twice baked potato - upside down pineapple cake. The theater part kept you involved and the actors made you feel comfortable. Was surprised at the outcome. No one at our table guessed the killer. But it was very funny and entertaining. We are already looking to come back for the October murder mystery dinner and also the Pa Ren Fair. The winery.. what a nice place. I do not drink wine, but they offer some of Lancaster Brewing Company ciders. Peach Vanilla was awesome and a 6 pack found its way home with me. Prices for everything were extremely reasonable. The dinner alone was worth way more than what a ticket cost. If you have not experienced one of these shows, please do yourself a favor and check one out. They do offer gluten free alternatives. read more

I've been here on two separate occasions now. The first time was after a renaissance festival at the grounds and the second was stopping back in to pick up some more wine. The winery itself is pretty neat. It has a fairly large tasting area in the back and the front has a great display of the various wines they offer. My wife's favorite has been the Fushion. It is an excellent blend of fruit flavor in your wine. They also offer some Meads at a very reasonable price as well. We purchased a new mead that we found which is a combination of apple and honey. Can't wait to try it! We've also tried their Niagra, Reisling, and chocolate wines. On this last trip we found and purchased a mint chocolate wine that sounds quite interesting to try. I really like the winery for the price, festival grounds next to it, and having a relatively unique and delicious combination of wines. I would much rather spend my money and get a better tasting wine than in the state store. I will be back to restock supplies in the future. read more

This is located within the Pennsylvania Ren Faire. It's great that it is open even when the fair isn't going on. It is a very large Wine/Gift shop. There is a very large bar/wine tasting area. Tastings are free with as many as you would like to try. The employees are very friendly and knowledgable. We were disappointed though to find out that their wine is not produced locally, but near Erie PA by another winery and shipped to their facility. Regardless of the locale of the wine, it is very tasty. We prefer the sweeter wines and they had a quite a few to chose from. Left with three bottles. They also have many, many " wine' type goodies and gifts. From t-shirts to wine stoppers, glasses, coolers and the like. Was a nice experience and will surely make a point to visit again. The Murder Mystery dinner is a blast, and it makes for a nice, inexpensive weekend away from tight suburbs. Several years ago my husband and I went to the Edgar Allen Poe show for Halloween, and we and meant to return to experience the Murder Mystery dinner sooner. The actors were enthusiastic and thoroughly enjoyed what they were doing; what they did required keen improvisation skills, for the show depends on audience participation. The setting, which is the Mt. Hope Winery mansion, is quite a treat for me, for I love Victorian architecture. Dinner was great. When my husband ordered our tickets online, he did not realize that he had to make special accommodations for a vegan, for the mansion does have a vegetarian/gluten-free option. The wait and chef staff went out of their way to make me a delicious vegan meal, including the entree and dessert. The wines do vary. We did a tasting, and did try some of the fruit juice and cough medicine flavored wines. We did, however, get the seasonal Spiced Apple, a Gewürztraminer (which is reasonable for the location and climate) and brandy. A bit of a warning . . . finding a good hotel nearby is a challenge. The Holiday Inn across the road (literally) was book more than a month in advance, and some of the other local hotels were filled or were quite seedy (I read a bunch of reviews.) We wound up staying over night at the Holiday in Express in Lititz. The drive was about 25 minutes on particularly dark roads, but I was satisfied. read more

This place is a bit of a tourist trap...lots of cool stuff in the store and wine tastings are free but you literally get a sip and the wine is not good. It's not real wine, mostly flavored stuff. The chocolate covered cherry wine is super tasty and about the only wine worth buying. The staff was polite but not overly friendly and ready to go home for the day. The Ren fest is held there which I'm sure is lovely but again, not the place to go for good wine. read more

Went there for the Murder Mystery Dinner. Overall, it was a great time! I gave it 4 stars only because of the meal, which was good, but not great. I would certainly do this again though, worth (IMHO) checking out for future similar events. BUT, for details...the event SOLD OUT right away, so that should tell you something right there. The Murder Mystery is held in the Winery Mansion, for those not familiar with the event. The actors of the event are allot of fun and eager to role play the part and they all did a really good job of it. They get right into character and make the experience really fun and everybody is very friendly. There is a bar there and only soda, tea and water are included with the meal. Wines and beer are an extra cost and the prices are very reasonable. They will do an open tab for you if you want. The meal is posted on their Web site, but it was a 4 course meal. Started with Ricotta and Radish Crostini, 2nd was a Chicken & Rice Soup, 3rd was Roasted Pork Loin w/mustard sauce, Roasted Potatoes & Peas. 4th, dessert was a Baked Apple w/Spices & Raisins. 1st and 2nd were very good. The meal was good, could've spooned more sauce on the meat and the Pork Loin was a little dry. Dessert was also ok, not quite what I expected, but good. If they would have drizzled some warm Carmel on the apple, that would have been better. The play was very entertaining! The actors were good. Without giving anything away...my only advice is to ask questions! The actors will tell you their story and you should listen to them talk between themselves, in character. My best advice, ask ALLOT of questions to ALL of them! I thought we asked allot of questions, but really we didn't as we were going in a different direction as to the solution for the few questions we did ask. We didn't stay at a local hotel, so I can't advise on them. We had allot of fun and will go back again. read more

First of all, the staff was very rude and unwelcoming when we came in. The staff acted like it was a burden to serve us samples of wine. After trying out four wines I decided to buy some. Instead of the staff helping you grab the wine, you have to get it yourself (which is fine). When I went to go grab it I almost grabbed the wine in the wrong place and the lady at the store came stomping over and said "NO, I'LL GET IT" and checked me out as she was mad that I almost grabbed the wine off the wrong shelf. Great wine but I'll NEVER go back there as a friendly and buying customer does not deserve to be treated like that. read more

I haven't gone to the Renaissance Faire for about two years. I decided to take my granddaughters today. I was very disappointed. Some of the workers were very short tempered and seemed annoyed. Some were very nice. Food was awful. Went to a restaurant and had to ask three times for napkins and silverware. read more

We visited Mount Hope for the first time on Saturday. It was a quiet afternoon which was great for us. We were amazed that we could actually sample all of the wines from their large wine list without any fee. Our pourer was friendly, attentive, and informative. The portions were smaller but then again it was free and there were many to choose from. We all enjoyed the dryer wine. We purchased two bottles only because this was our first stop. We were on a local tour of wineries and breweries. The aspect of mount hope that stands out is the free and unlimited samples. I enjoyed the concord while my friend raved about the tequila flavored wine. The winery does need a large bar. It was a slow day but the all of the tables and bar stools were filled. I've been here so many times starting around 2003 and have always loved their wines. But I moved away so it's been a few years since I've been there and apparently they discontinued every wine that I loved and added all new ones that just taste generic. None are worth buying anymore. And to top it off I had a truly horrible wine tasting experience this time. I was told they had only one clean glass left for tastings, and I was able to purchase it afterwards if I wanted. As I took my first sip I felt a hair touch my face. I look at the glass and there was lipstick prints on the opposite side with a long hair stuck to it! How absolutely disgustingly vile! That's bad enough as is, but I'm a huge germaphobe on top of it! The wine doesn't have enough alcohol to kill any germs, so I dumped sanitizer on my lips and practically burned them off. The employee apologized to me like 10 times, but nothing could make up for drinking from a total strangers glass. I ended up just leaving without purchasing the things I originally wanted because I just wanted to forget that experience. But I originally stopped to buy the awesome unique wines they no longer make. No more reason to come here. read more

I wasn't head-over-heels about the wine but they DID have several wines I had never tasted before including many honey wines. We went to the PA Renaissance Faire and tasted wine from Mt Hope. The fairgrounds were really nice. I have tried a few Pennsylvania wines now and found Mt Hope to be very average and slightly overpriced (I'm from California so maybe I'm biased). We bought a $12 bottle of red that I would consider table wine; opened it after dinner to find that it was sour/fizzy/turning rancid. I brought it back the next day to ask for a replacement and explained that it was sour. The lady was rude to me and kept saying that it wasn't sour without tasting it. I said that it was nothing like what we tasted, and she said that is how it is supposed to taste and that it needs to be oxydized for a couple days. BS. Then she walked away. Ended up getting the bottle replaced, but it annoyed me enough to open a Yelp account to write a negative review. I'm done with Mt Hope and probably done with PA wines all together. read more
