Itemized receipt showing all medication administered

I brought my 5-year-old cat to Mount Laurel Animal Hospital for a partial urinary blockage, which I later learned he had already passed on his own at home. As anyone familiar with cats knows, urinary issues are a true emergency, so I trusted this facility to act in my cat's best interest. The initial estimate I was given was $4,500-$8,400, which was shocking. When I explained I could not afford that, the focus immediately shifted to payment--multiple credit card brochures were pushed on me before any real empathy was shown. I work in the medical field myself, and the lack of compassion during such a stressful moment was alarming. They revised the plan so my cat would stay 36 hours instead of the usual 72, and the doctor said this would be acceptable. Again, this was an emergency, yet the urgency seemed more focused on securing payment than on medical care. My cat was admitted around 11 AM. That night around 8 PM, I was told he was doing great and had been downgraded from ICU. The next morning I received another positive update--he was eating, bloodwork was almost normal, and everything sounded encouraging. I picked him up that evening. He was profoundly lethargic, wobbly, and urinating uncontrollably. I was told this was "normal" due to IV fluids. However, this level of sedation was alarming and did not improve over the next several days. After reviewing the itemized bill and medication record, I became extremely concerned. During his 36-hour stay, my cat was given buprenorphine and lorazepam together three separate times. These medications are not recommended to be administered concurrently, as both significantly depress the central nervous system, especially in cats. This combination alone poses serious risks. In addition to this, he was also given what is referred to as a sedation bundle, including propofol, methadone, and midazolam. The cumulative effect of these medications--layered on top of repeated doses of buprenorphine and lorazepam--created an excessive sedative burden for a cat of his size and condition. I shared these records with my primary care veterinarian, who agreed that my cat had been significantly over-sedated. Shortly after discharge, I BELIEVE my cat went into acute liver failure, which my veterinarian felt was consistent with medication toxicity and central nervous system depression. Tragically, my cat passed away. He was in better condition when I brought him in--alert and responsive--than when he came home. I am not accusing anyone of intentional harm. However, I do believe there was serious incompetence, over-medication, and lack of appropriate oversight in my cat's care. After burying my cat in my backyard, I began reading reviews and was disturbed to see a clear pattern--many negative reviews describe similar outcomes, often ending in the loss of a beloved pet. I expect the office to respond defensively, as they appear to do with every negative review. I am not interested in arguing. I am sharing this so other pet owners can make an informed decision. I was charged 3,700 for a 36 hour stay and my cat who was otherwise completely healthy is gone. If your animal is experiencing an emergency, I strongly recommend seeking care elsewhere--Red Bank Veterinary Hospital, for example. No one should lose their pet this way

My cat, Finn, was brought to MLAH to be monitored for a couple days for severe anemia. During his stay, I was updated regularly by his doctors and nurses, which brought me peace of mind. Special shoutout and thanks to Dr. Zoto, Dr. Haymaker, Dr. Salerno, & Nurse Jenna for taking such great care of my boy & helping ease my anxieties. They all (among other staff) cared for Finn like he was their own. I'm eternally grateful, as so is Finn!

In June 2025, my family brought our beloved dog, Dexter (14 years old, mini poodle/bichon frise/pug mix), to Mt. Laurel Animal Hospital. He had vomited several times, and we were worried. After waiting for over five hours, Dr. Recklehoff told us Dexter was a chronic diabetic in diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), despite having normal blood sugar levels just weeks prior and no recent weight loss. He also had severe acute pancreatitis, which I believed. They admitted him only after we paid their low-end estimate upfront ($7,800-$11,700). Because the diabetes diagnosis made no sense, I explained that Dexter had just finished his first antibiotic regimen (Clavamox), following a dental cleaning and adenoma removal. A rare but known side effect in humans and animals is acute pancreatitis, which can trigger secondary DKA. They ignored this. Over the next three days, their updates were vague and contradictory. They claimed Dexter was stable and improving, but every clinical update reflected decline. They also continued to raise the price without consent or notice. After three days, we decided to transfer him to Penn Vet. The dog we picked up was not the same. Dexter arrived at Mt. Laurel happy and mobile. He left emaciated, dull, and unable to walk. The discharge process was equally unacceptable: - His Freestyle Libre glucose reader didn't work. They said we'd have to return and pay for a new one - They sent prescriptions to the wrong pharmacy without consent, then refused to send them to the correct one - We were left with no working sensor and told he'd be "fine" for 24 hours, despite being in critical condition That night, we rushed him to Penn Vet. Their high estimate ($3,000-$7,000) was still below Mt. Laurel's low estimate. But it was too late. Twelve hours later, Dexter went into cardiac arrest. They performed CPR for 30 minutes, but he died. Upon reviewing Mt. Laurel's records, I found alarming errors: - No treatments targeted the pancreatitis (no lidocaine, fuzapladib, vitamin E) - Excessive use of narcotics and insulin, despite insulin resistance - Only one ultrasound in three days - They charged $145 per Libre reading, despite it being a continuous monitor - 44 of 52 pages had the wrong hospital name/address - Dexter's age was incorrect (listed as 13, not 14) - A false diagnosis from weeks earlier (which never occurred) made its way from here into his Penn Vet records - Four pages belonged to another dog, "Ellie," including her history and prescriptions These are not minor clerical mistakes. They may be severe violations of N.J. Admin. Code § 13:44-4.9, which governs veterinary recordkeeping. Two independent veterinary experts reviewed the case. Both concluded that Mt. Laurel failed to meet the standard of care and caused Dexter's preventable death. Both used the term "negligence." An autopsy from Penn stated he died of sepsis from a UTI acquired during hospitalization at Mt. Laurel. I submitted a demand letter and complete documentation on August 8, 2025. Mt. Laurel confirmed receipt on August 11. The practice manager, Krista McDermott, acknowledged the issue on August 15 but provided no further update. On August 28, Caramanza (Broadspire insurance adjuster) finally responded, promising a review within 5-7 business days. After numerous delays, he denied my claim despite the overwhelming evidence. I should note that Krista tried to intimidate me from posting this review. She has no sympathy and is very unprofessional. We spent over $19,000 trying to save Dexter. We trusted this hospital with his life. What we received instead was misdiagnosis, inadequate care, recordkeeping errors, and silence. I'm sharing this to warn others. We would never use this hospital again. If something like this has happened to you or someone you know, please reach out to Joey's Legacy. They are nonprofit advocates for victims of veterinary malpractice and negligence, and they were invaluable to my family during this painful time. Addendum: The response is wrong. I have proof that no veterinary expert review was conducted by their insurance. They also admitted to neglecting my evidence.

On May 9th and May 10th, we brought our dog Russell to Mount Laurel Animal Hospital twice in 24 hours due to ongoing vomiting. We waited hours both visits. The first night, he was given fluids and anti-nausea medication and sent home. By the next morning, he was very weak, not himself, and still vomiting. We returned back to the hospital, and waited over three hours. The ER doctor who was assigned to Russell's case, Dr. Wilson recommended an ultrasound to check for a possible blockage and explained that sedation was standard protocol for all ultrasounds. During recovery from sedation, Russell aspirated bile into his lungs and had to be intubated. His condition quickly declined, and we were told he would likely not survive. We had to make the heartbreaking decision to say goodbye. We left devastated and full of questions. We wondered if sedation was the safest choice for a vomiting dog, and whether more could have been done to prevent aspiration, such as using suction or adjusting his positioning. Til this day, I am still questioning the procedure that took place. Being charged in full after such a traumatic experience added to our pain. Russell was more than a pet. He was family. We trusted the hospital, and we feel he deserved better. We hope his case is reviewed with care, so no other family has to go through the same loss.

One ER doctor called me multiple times over the course of 2 days just to keep me updated on my baby. How amazing! Then Jasper was transferred from emergency medicine to the internal medicine team. This is when we met Dr. DiBenedetto- our hero. I cannot say enough amazing things about this man. He showed true compassion towards me and Jasper, he worked extremely hard to determine what was causing Jaspers illness, spent a great deal of time providing me with all the details of his illness, treated him appropriately, and SAVED HIM! Nine days after discharge, Jasper started to feel unwell again. Luckily we already had a follow up visit scheduled, so off we went to Redbank again.
