From the initial phone call to Robbinsville, who were able to make me an appointment at Maple Shade NJ within two weeks, to the friendly front desk personnel, to Dr Karen Meltzer, everything was Class A. We brought our Doberman here due to a racing arrhythmia. Knowing DCM and having lost three others to this disease, time was of the importance. Dr Meltzer was able to perform both a EKG and an Ultrasound, to get the best information on why, what and how to treat our girl. We were able to be in the exam room and watch these tests being performed. That was much appreciated, to see the care they took with her. Both Dr Meltzer and Shannon were wonderful with our girl. As suspected by us, she was diagnosed within DCM/V-Tac. Appropriate medications were given to us, with her being dosed before we left. Scripts were received, Wedgewood compounding pharmacy received another script, for Pimobendan, which we already had an account there. All in all, things fast tracked once we arrived. Anyone with a Doberman and having gone thru DCM; knows the significance of catching this early and starting treatment. Although there is no cure, their life can be extended. We left there with a follow up appointment in two weeks, to do another EKG, to ensure the medication is working for our girl. Walked out with a complete written report explaining her condition, test results and everything needed to know about this diagnosis, including her medications. Honestly, having had three other Dobermans go thru this situation; this is the first time we were able to "see it all" with the testing. That is so important to us and very much appreciated they allowed us to be in the exam room. This was the most personalized experience we have ever had at a cardiologist appointment. My experience here in mid June 2024 was very special. I cannot say enough good things. My 12 year old fospice (foster + hospice) pup's health rapidly declined in a matter of hours. I knew what to look for, and immediately rushed him to NorthStar Vets (in Maple Shade). Dr. Sayeed conducted a thorough exam, and we both agreed that it was time to let him go peacefully. The care, kindness, love, and compassion my pup received as he crossed over the rainbow bridge was exceptional. I am very grateful for our medical team that Saturday night: Dr. Sayeed (vet), and Danielle & Amanda (vet techs). These women are all angels... while Danielle and Amanda were prepping him, they sat on the floor with us, and my sweet old guy received numerous pets, hugs, and kisses. Even in the midst of my uncontrollable tears, Danielle and Amanda had me laughing a few times. They also spoiled my pup with some Hershey's kisses. When the time came, Dr. Sayeed and I sat on the floor with him. He relaxed in my lap on that fluffy blanket. Dr. Sayeed spoke to him so kindly, loved on him, and spoiled him, prior to sedating him. I would never go back to Northstar unless I absolutely had no where else to go. My cat was very seriously ill and my vet sent me to Northstar. The cat had an extremely high fever and was becoming worse. This happened quite rapidly. When I walked in, I told them that she was terribly ill and if a vet could see her immediately. No- I first had to fill out several papers and give them a deposit and then I still had to wait. Finally when the vet took her in, the vet was VERY blasé and despite the urgency she seemed to just take her good old time while I was holding my failing cat. Finally they got her in the back room and in less than an hour, my cat died while they were intubating her. Now- I don't blame them for her death- she had a malignancy that we weren't aware of- but I blame them for not treating me and my cat with any urgency. read more

I am writing to make you aware of my experience at this facility and with these Veterinarians. Our initial visit to the practice was on 9/6. We met with Dr. Zuendt who presented two options. We could have surgery on our puppy's broken leg, or because of how young he is, we could place a splint on his leg with a good chance of success. At the time we asked him to place odds on it healing with a splint, he told us 70%. We decided to go with the splint and followed Dr. Zuendt's treatment plan, which was to come back weekly to have the split reapplied. We were told further payment would go towards only splint changes but not re evaluation. We came back to the practice on 9/13 and met with Dr. Culbert. This time we were given completely different guidance on the length of time the splint would have to be on along with the success rate. We were taken aback that two vets at the same practice could give us such polar opposite opinions. It was as if the left hand didn't know what the right hand was doing. We not only were charged for the splint change at the time but a re evaluation by this vet. She stated the splint was not placed high enough initially to properly immobilize the bones. We immediately reached out to the office manager, requesting feedback on why we were receiving vastly different opinions. She said she would get back to us and two weeks later, had not done so. Needless to say we no longer had faith in North Star. We decided to get a second opinion elsewhere. We were told the fracture was still unstable and X-Rays showed that the fracture appeared to be worse due to a failure to stabilize the injury. The second opinion told us at onset we could have used an external fixator but at this stage that was no longer a possibility. Again, we were taken aback that neither Vet brought this option up to us. Based on us taking Dr. Zuendt's initial recommendations, the only option was now surgery. If surgery was not performed, our puppy would either experience shortening of the leg and or loss of use. This was very frustrating and concerning for us. How could a reputable Veterinary practice offer us such poor guidance??! Based on our experience and damages caused to our pet, we asked for a full refund for services. We were billed $552.27 for our two visits. After much back and forth email communication, with Joan Fischer the office manager, we were basically told that our puppy's leg was healing and there was no need for surgery. I find this odd since our primary vet and second opinion both stated otherwise. I wish I had avoided going to this office. It caused my dog to be immobile longer. My dog hurt his leg chasing rabbits and refused to walk on it. I took him to NorthStar VETS to be treated. Unfortunately, we learned that he tore his cruciate ligament. I was very sad that he had to have surgery! However, the doctors and staff at NorthStar were above and beyond compassionate and professional when dealing with my puppers. Dr. Stobie did the surgery, and it went very well. My dog is still recovering, but he is on the mend quickly due to the detailed at home care instructions and medication. I was very impressed with the cleanliness of the office, the prompt attention of the staff, and the compassion that my dog was shown when in their care. A friend and I found an incredibly sweet pit on the side of road in labor and in distress. We scooped her up in the back of my car, called animal control, were instructed to go to this hospital, and while on the way there, she gave birth to a dead puppy. At the hospital, we were told they did an ultrasound and told there were NO MORE puppies in her. I even paid for blood work out of my own pocket. She was deemed "stable" and sent to a no kill shelter. I fell in love with this dog and was planning on fostering her once she was cleared, but sadly that will never happen. Two days later, she went into labor again at the shelter. There were 3 additional puppies in her. She was so sick from having these dead puppies in her for so long, that she needed to be put down. We thought we were doing the right thing and were so excited to give her the love and life she deserved, because she clearly was very mistreated, but taking her there will forever be one of my biggest regrets. I am beyond heartbroken. I am so grateful for the people at the shelter who loved and cared for her for those 2 days. However, I am disgusted with this hospital because they are either completely incompetent or liars. read more

I can't say enough good things about this place. I took my dog here after she started having frequent seizures. Dr. Jones assessed her and then came in to explain everything to me. She was great with answering all my questions and comforting me. Then they presented the paper work and all the possibilities in detail of what the cost could be with her illness and that the level of care was my decision. I felt completely in control of my baby's health. She was there for 3 days and Dr. Jones updated called me every day to explain exactly what was going on. Unfortunately, on the last day things took a turn for the worst and she ended up passing away. Dr. Jones called me through each step they took to try to save her and they did every single thing that they could. I felt like she was treated more like a human and that's what I wanted. My girl had already passed by the time I got there & I was devastated. Dr. Jones came in and gave me the news & explained what happened. They brought her into me to say goodbye & let me spend as much time as I wanted with her & then they handled all the arrangements for me, so I didn't have to worry about it & sent me the bill later. My husband came in because one of our cats had eaten something and was throwing up, and we were worried. He brought both of our cats in to be safe, and after looking at them, the vet told him that one of them had a heart murmur and the other had gingivitis. They then proceeded to take both of the cats back into a room for 2.5 hours and did not allow my husband in to comfort or check on them. The staff periodically updated my husband and told him that the cats weren't cooperating and had to be sedated to get their blood work done. After 2.5 hours, they brought the cats back out very sedated, and they handed him a bill that contained a urinalysis as well as additional sedatives that that he was not consulted on. To recap, we brought the cats in for a simple checkup to make sure they hadn't been poisoned, and my husband left with two very sedated cats who had been treated and tested for things that had nothing to do with their original problem. Not only were we charged for more than we consented to, but our cats were over-treated and were acting off for some time afterward. read more

I have been using North Star vets in Maple Shade since they opened for their ophthalmology department, as well as, emergency care. My 8 year old dog has conjunctivitis in both his eyes and uses two different eye drops a few times a day. After attempting to refill his prescription online, I was notified his prescription had expired. I called the front desk where I was told it was in fact expired but since he had been seen there recently, I could just write an email to the pharmacy department and they would call in the prescription. I did just that. A few hours later I had a voicemail from the pharmacy stating that since my dog was seen by the emergency department and was not seen by the ophthalmology department, they would not refill it. I called back to the front desk to make an appointment and was told that the next available appointment was in March. I said ok and asked if they would be able to send in a refill to hold him over until the appointment (lack of the eye drops can cause blindness). I was told that they would not refill the eye drops but I was welcome to bring him in through the emergency department to get the prescription but it would only be for the one month and I would still need to keep the appointment with the ophthalmologist... wait... what?... you literally just told me that he was just seen there but because it was in the emergency department and not the ophthalmology department, you wouldn't write the prescription but now you're telling me to bring him in through the emergency department and they'll write it... This just tells me one thing, North Star just wants your money and doesn't care about the health condition of your pet that they have been treating for years. There are plenty of compassionate vets still out there, this one is not it. Take your pet somewhere else. Update: My dogs primary vet at Grey Fox Animal Hospital wrote the prescription to hold us over until our appointment with Penn Vets Ophthalmology Department, who we will be using from now on. read more

My lab mix, Sam, cut his ear on a fence, and although it was a small cut, it was bleeding profusely, and splattering everywhere. My vet's office was closed for the evening but recommended I take Sam to NorthStar. The staff were excellent. They immediately applied a temporary bandage until he could be seen by the vet. Dr. Tursi did a great job. She thoroughly explained what had to be done (anesthesia, stitches, etc), and the potential costs. Everything went smoothly. The practice contacted me the next day to follow up and make sure I didn't have any questions. I hope I never have to go to NorthStar again, but it's great to know they are there if needed. read more

I was very disappointed taking my dog here. I called and said I was on my way my dog had had a seizure over 8 min than another seizure. When I got there I waited to fill out paperwork than someone came out to triage which asked me a bunch of questions did not even look at my dog. She stated there was a wait. After almost 2 hours I called to see how long the wait is because my dog was breathing labored and I was scared. They told me 3 others a head of me but they would send someone out to check on her after waiting another 25 minutes I left. I understand there are other animals but to my understanding they r suppose to check your animal to make sure it's not serious And there stable. They could have simply told me they couldn't take her and I would have went somewhere else that could have properly evaluated her. read more

2 days after one of the saddest days of my life, I feel it's important to give my review of Northstar. Dr. Josh Portner and team made the best of a terrible situation. I had previously taken Nittanys brother to Northstar in Robbinsville 2 years ago when he ate 19 hair ties and needed emergency surgery. When they opened in Maple Shade I was thrilled that they were closer in case I needed it. Nittany went from a picky eater to not eating on Sunday We had a vet appointment on Monday but not eating was cause for alarm and we took him in. Unfortunately an ultrasound revealed he had an advanced stage of cancer and treatment would give him a few weeks, tops. My husband and I elected to let him down peacefully. Throughout the day, Dr. Portner called with updates and walked me through all of the options. He was patient and caring, and didn't sway us one way or the other. When it came time for what every pet owner dreads, I couldn't ask for a better horrible moment. They gave us the time we needed privately with Nittany, and then Dr. Portner walked us through what was going to happen. Nittany died peacefully with us in the room and he made it as humane and respectful as you could ask. This evening I received a hand written note from Dr. Portner which really touched us both. When you're grieving, every small moment means something. When you're going to Northstar, most likely you're already stressed when your animal is hurt or sick. The whole team makes sure both you and your pet are taken care of and they've been worth every penny- when they could save Oliver- and even when they couldn't save Nittany. Our primary vet referred us for emergent and specialty care. Our 1st visit was terrific, Dr. Singleton was knowledgeable and thoughtful with exceptional bedside manner. Her second visit was a surgeon consult for the same problem. The surgeon and the oncologist were both excellent. The clinicians on staff seem to be some of the best around; my rating is due to standard operating procedures and front desk training. The front office staff, in my opinion, are disorganized and rude. I'm not sure if it's because of my physical appearance or just the lack of customer service training, manager accountability to behavior expectations or what. Situation: I called on Thursday for a refill for my fur baby. I was told they needed my primary care to send a script even though it was ordered by their MD and filled by their pharmacy. No problem, I called my vet and asked them to send one over. Friday... Saturday I called to check status, it was received. I called my vet again they faxed it over and emailed it. I called to verify the script was received, it was. A few hours later, I called to check status. They told me not to call them, they are busy, and they will call me when it's ready. Sunday... Monday, I called her primary vet again and explained the situation, of course, they were appalled. They called NorthStar and was told they didn't have a script to fill. My vet faxed the documents again and confirmed receipt, then called to follow up 6 hours later and was also told I would receive a call once it's ready in don't call us, we are busy tone. My fur baby has now been without the only thing that gives her relief for 3 days, so I go to NorthStar at 8:35 pm to check on the status. Initially, I was turned away and given the "we are busy" phase. I stayed and explained my disappointment, so they said for me to wait, they will fill the prescription but couldn't give me a time frame. Ok... I waited 45 minutes until they told me they were out of the medication and that is the reason I was never called. But you want my 2,000 for a CT and biopsy?!?!? Nope, we'll find a dependable system that can support their patients past the initial visit. The next day, I told my primary vet about the experience she called and they told her the rx had been filled and is ready for pick up?!?!? Really???? Anyway, I picked it up and front desk is still rude, folks were not apologetic or bothered in the slightest. I will not spend any more of my money there, going to Banfield and UPenn from now on. read more

I am not typically a review kinda guy however this experience requires one and probably a long one so you've been warned ! I bought an 8 week old golden retriever from a breeder that had a false identity online and obviously neglected to mention that this sweet dog Bella was prone to hip dysplasia on both of her hips. After noticing an inactive 5 month old puppy, I took her to my regular vet who told me that she suffered from severe hip dysplasia on both sides and the only options were orthopedic surgery or putting her down. How any human in their right mind can think about putting a 5 month old puppy down is beyond me however, while I'm not a tremendously wealthy person, I do happen to be fortunate enough to not have to "bark" much about spending a few thousand dollars on my dog. Fast forward 6 months and after a good amount of research, I brought her over to NorthStar Vets to get the surgery process started. Immediately I was impressed with the facility ! It's like a 5star resort for dogs ! Dr Daniel stobie and his team evaluated Bella and subsequently performed a THR on her right side. Her recovery was marvelous and almost immediately I was able to see a dramatic improvement. It's important to note that the rehab they offer along with constant follow ups, water treadmill, ultrasound and check ups are critical to a proper recovery. They know what they are doing and if instructions are carefully followed, it makes for a near miracle. The hardest part is keeping a puppy quiet when she feels instantly better but it pays off in the long run ! Almost 8 months later, I decided to get the other side done as well. As always, they paid meticulous attention to detail and verified that she was in good health for this surgery before even agreeing to perform it. This one however, due to the hip deterioration over an additional year, was a lot tougher and surgery itself lasted a lot longer than normal. That said, dr stobie still called me right after he was done that afternoon and while I could hear the sheer exhaustion in his voice, it was one of the best phone calls I've ever received. I don't have kids and my two dogs are my life so this kind of "over and above customer service " is way more than I could hope for. If there is even a doubt whether you should take your dog here, the following may seal the deal. After surgery, a few days later, I was slated to pick Bella up and I get a call from Dr Stobie who tells me that due to the delicacy of this surgery, him and a couple other doctors think it's better for Bella to stay there under their watch for an additional week. They did this for practically no additional cost!!! They mainly wanted to see that Bella would be going home only when they thought she would be good enough to go home. Daily visits from them, daily update phone calls to me, almost daily X-rays, and all the love and care they could give her. Even the veterinary technicians spent a ton of time with her and gave her kisses when I left to bring her home. That's the kind of love and care this place can provide ! It's not about the money as much as it is about the animals themselves. I truly couldn't be happier with my experience here and for anyone that is in a similar situation or even needs a little more than a regular vet can handle, this is the place to go !! As I type this, I realized this is my first online review about anything ever so it's just another testament to how impressive these folks are. It seems to be a very well equipped clinic with qualified staff at first. My dog was treated there with a terminal illness. Technicians seem very polite and caring. But most specialists seem mostly concerned with getting as many tests done as possible. It is almost impossible to talk to the treating specialists. When my dog relapes, the treating neurolgist would not return any of my calls. I had to go the ER to get someoene's attention. No one ever explained the pros and cons of the suggested treaments. Nor did anyone explain the nature of the terminal illness and the pros and cons of available treamtnets. So we opted for several thousand dollars of treatments. And in the end our dog died a horrible death. If someone had explained the nature of his illness to us, we would have opted for euthanasia and we would have saved him a horrible death. When we fianally came to he ER with our dog with cluster seizures, no one gave him a sedative to ease his suffering. He sat alone in a cage until we told them to please put him to sleep. We never received a condolence card. Nor did our primary vet receive a notice that our dog was euthanized, I don't think I would ever go back to North Star Vets with any of my other pets. read more

We took her to northstar as recommended by the humane society to get an ultrasound and X-rays. Without going into detail, we found this place and the staff to be fantastic, fully equipped with a knowledgeable and compassionate staff. I had heard many stories of veterinarians price gauging and no compassion when you are dealing with such a traumatic event. Absolute worst care that my pet could have ever received before passing. My pet was brought in on an emergency basis in the middle of the night showing signs of a neurological type issue and difficulty breathing. No one told us about the wait being almost 4 hours. When an initial 2 minute assessment was done on our vet, not even the vet realized that the case was critical and decided to wait 4 hours to see him again but failed to check on him in between that time to see if he was deteriorating and needed emergency care at that point. Believe it or not, thats exactly what happened. We were told our pet was a critical patient when the vet saw him almost 4 hours after arrival amid COVID (when you cannot be with your pet inside the building). After multiple tests and a thorough examination being conducted, the vet still could not tell us what his diagnosis was or what was wrong with him. All she could say is that he is a critical patient and would need an MRI (something they do not have at the favility) and would need to remain in an oxygen chamber because he was having difficulty breathing. We had no opportunity to take him to another facility in that 4 hours we were waiting because another assessment was not performed in between to tell us he was this critical inside the building and when an assessment was conducted, it was too late because he would need to remain in an oxygen chamber in order to survive so we could not transport him elsewhere at that point. ABSOLUTE WORSE TRIAGE I HAVE EVER SEEN. This facility is understaffed and does not have the capabilities it states it does in its name to be called an EMERGENCY TRAUMA CENTER, because they clearly cannot handle emergency cases if they do not have the proper equipment needed and do not have enough staff members. You are better off going to an animal hospital that is equipped for handling such critical cases and has the decency to tell you if they are too busy to handle a case like this one up front. THE WORST CARE MY PET COULD HAVE EVER RECEIVED BEFORE PASSING. I would NEVER recommend this place for emergency care of pets. It does not even deserve one star because thats how bad the service was from start to finish after our dog had passed and we went to see him. Waited 30 minutes in the car just to say our goodbyes to our pet, when we couldn't even be there when he was put to sleep. There is no humanity with this facility. They are only after the bottom line which is money and do not truly care about the pets otherwise they would be able to triage much better, be capable of providing services that emergency care facilities are capable of providing, and have enough staff members (having more than one vet on call) to manage multiple critical patients at the same time. If you are going to market yourself as an emergency trauma facility, then you should be fully staffed and have the appropriate medical equipment to do so. ZERO STARS FOR THE EMBARRASSING AND INFERIOR CARE THAT MY PET RECEIVED AND HOW MYSELF AND MY FAMILY WERE TREATED THAT DAY AND THE DAY OUR PET PASSED. Update- a letter was sent to the Northstar Maple Shade, NJ Manager as well as Adminstrator with far more details about the embarassing quality of care our pet recieved and we have not recieved a single response (and its been one week). While the situation may not change for my pet and my family, I would atleast hope that Northstar would learn something from this to prevent other families and pets from going through a similiar experience, but apparantly not. read more
