It has probably the best deli selection of any grocery store in Duluth and offers lunch meat and cheeses that the others don't. They also have fresh delicious Sushi made on site available which they discount closer to the end of the night. It also has a Caribou coffee built and a nice sit down area if you want to pick up something from the deli and eat it there. There prices are reasonable and allow you to drive up to pick up your groceries from the store instead of having to carry it to your car. They have a nice selection of grocery products and carry some products that both Cub Foods and Super One foods do not. The wait staff is also very friendly and helpful. read more

This shop has been on my list to go to for awhile glad I went! Great selection, beautiful deli area. You can tell the workers take pride in their work and kind workers. Their chicken pot pie is excellent! Pot pie Tuesdays are best, warm pot pie readily available. Otherwise frozen home made to go. Large serving with great filling and crust. Lots of organic options. Take your own bags as they charge. Also don't allow carts out of the store. Can pick up easily at the curb. Prepare for sticker shock. Mount Royal has always been by far, the best market in Duluth. That being said, their customer service is extremely hit and miss. Most of the people are great, but there are quite often those that really do not seem to like their jobs and actually seem bothered if a question is asked of them. NO FRESH ORANGE JUICE??? They claim that on Friday (why only Friday as it's not that tough to squeeze oranges), they will offer fresh squeezed OJ, but they do not. This is the 2nd week in a row and about the 6th in the past three months where they do not have any. Upon asking them about it, they scoff and say "the orange juice person is on vacation". REALLY, that's what was said last week and one last month as well????? The "orange juice person" is lame and they do not care. I understand that it's only OJ, but when they claim to be the best and freshest in town, they should be able to provide their loyal and long term customers with the simple product of fresh orange juice. I can't believe that I'm taking time to write this, because it's only OJ, but it's the attitude they always have. They are very dismissive and truly do not care. How difficult is it to teach someon else how to the the "OJ person"? Also, one the nicest things about MR is the way they help with the bag deliveries. However, the past month or so they have dropped the ball on this too. The past three times we go outside and find our items sitting lonely on the delivery belt. It's not problem, as we merely get out of the car in the cool rain and load them ourselves. It is however a problem for those that are 80+, shopping alone and struggling in the cold weather. The funny thing is that once the person was leaning against the wall texting and looked up to notice us loading. The previous time the person was leaning against the wall smoking. UGH... Next time we will post pics or videos so that you will see that this is not false. As they are the only game in town, they feel that they can stop caring about the loyal customers, but this is not the case. People will stop visiting your store and spending their hard earned money with you. It's long been a wonderful place to shop and hopefully they haven't brought in a new lazy manager that is letting things slip. If that stays consistent, the only thing slipping will be their bottom line as people will stop coming in to shop. With Costco coming to Duluth soon, it will naturally happen anyhow as their meat and most other selections are actually better anyhow. Good luck Mount Royal, people are rooting for you. read more

Wow! Is this place a little gem. It's a little hard to find so keep driving to the end of that goofy driveway and you'll be rewarded with an incredible array of fine foods. Their deli section had so many quality choices it was hard to decide what to lunch on. Fine looking chicken (may have been broasted) and hot deli stuff, fantastic menu of salads (and not just the usual choices), sushi made right there (and not just rolls), the finest selection of deli meats this side of an Italian deli and I could go on and on. We only stopped by to get a quick lunch (pick out your foods, grab a Caribou coffee and have a seat in their roomy dining area) and could not believe how many choices we had. We had to hurry up for a doctor's appointment so we never even got a chance to tour the rest of the store. Next time we're in Duluth for sure! read more

I've always loved this grocery, and (once I figured out its layout) I could get in and out quickly with everything from staples to special items. Their produce is just the best. I live up on the north shore, but it's worth monthly or even semi-monthly trips to Duluth to visit Mount Royal and get the groceries not stocked by the purely basic stores farther north. Long time shopper at Cub with the occasional SuperOne trip. Started shopping at Mount Royal for a few things here and there and now i shop there exclusively. No joke their produce is better and less expensive. Their meat is ground and cut in house and is better and less expensive. Staff is all extremely friendly. Even though its probably less than 1/3 the size of Cub they still have everything i need without walking so far. Here is my favorite part..no self checkout. I get so frustrated with the weight sensing self checkouts in other stores. Mount Royal bags your food for you and has drive up service. Seriously love the place if you can't tell. read more

Love love love Mount Royal! Where to start?! Fresh homemade quiche and their little eating area is so cozy with the banquettes, modern lighting, and fireplace. I am addicted to the fresh baked goods, especially their glazed croissants in the donut case. Prices can be a little high on general grocery things, but hey, they load the car for you all winter. They also had something I've never saw, they had a big selection of sushi now that's not all that uncommon however they have an area set up that a couple people were making the sushi fresh. My grocery store of choice in Duluth. Great selection, but still a smaller, higher quality feel. Helpful staff. Great deli (love the fried chicken; potato salad is just like Mom's). I get fresh sushi about once a week. Good fruit and veggie selection. Fresh fish and meat are very good. Most prices are pretty competitive. Some things more, some less than other places. As a fifty plus year customer of Mt. Royal Fine Foods, formerly a Super Value store, it has every department covered , from the freshest and most interesting meat and fish counter, to a terrific deli with daily special lunch and dinner take-outs. Any thing that they don't stock, just ask and there's a good chance they can find it for you. Freshest produce around and if there's problem with ANYTHING just bring it back for either a replacement or full refund. A feature not found in any other store in Duluth, is the old fashioned bins that your groceries are loaded into and sent down a track to the outside of the store where you can drive up and have your groceries loaded into your vehicle quickly without having to struggle with wind or rain. Previous comparisons to the Cities stores compare Mt. Royal to Lunds-Byerly's but when it was remodeled several years ago, the owners and manager went down and looked at Kowalski's and used some of what they saw there in redesigning the store. Nearly every charitable group from Girl Scouts to Animal Allies always is provided a table or two inside the store to raise money in comfortable surroundings. They also have a "round-up" program where the customer is asked if they would like to round up to the next dollar. More than 10 thousand dollars has been raised in the few months since the program began with a different recipient designated each month. And another unseen "social responsibility" that Mt. Royal provides is the hiring of young workers who might not otherwise qualify for jobs as good as Mt Royal provides. I can't believe how nice grocery shopping could be! I just moved to Duluth about a month ago and I was told by a neighbor to shop at mrff. My old neighborhood only had a superone so I had no idea I was missing out. All the enployees I encountered were friendly and nice to me. It's hard for me to navigate in new places, but it was not a problem here, I needed help finding 3 diffrent things and the cashier I asked achually acted as tho he enjoies helping me find what i needed. After that I was checked out and here was where i was really impressed. Unlike super one they had someone who knew what they were dooing bag my grocries. He achually had all my stuff bagged properley by the time I filled out my check. I had over one hundred dollars worth. Those 2 enployees should get a raise. I have never been thanked for shopping at superone and i have been shopping for over 10 years. The three people who helped me were Joe, kevin, and phil, when you try this amazing store and you see one of them, you know you are in good hands, thank them, they are working very hard. read more

I have always loved shopping at Mt. Royal and enjoy the unique selection of food items and the service has always been exceptional until this last Saturday. I spent 1.5 hours in the store, spending time selecting fruits and vegetables, took about 10-15 minutes selecting birthday cards and 2 Valentine's Day cards. I picked up 2 pieces of pie for my Mother for Valentine's Day. I stopped at the meat counter and grabbed what I needed. I also found the individual serving of Pineapple Upside Down Cake which is my Mother's favorite, so I was able to get the last package for her Valentine's Day. I checked out and they packed my groceries for the drive-up service. On my way out I purchased a coffee at Caribou. I drove up to get my groceries and they could not find them. They gave my groceries to another vehicle. The General Manager came to my vehicle on the passenger's side and said he was sorry and said "It Happens!" It happens????? Do you think I wanted to here that it happens? I spent 1.5 hours going through the store, plus 40 minutes of driving there on the worst foggiest drizzly day! He didn't even bother to come to my side of my vehicle to talk to me. He said, I could go through the store again and buy my groceries. By this time it was 5:00pm. I am disabled and it can be such a challenge for me to walk through a store to go grocery shopping. I was not about to spend another 1.5 hours to get my groceries again and physically I could not do that. I read on their website that their top priority is customer service and they want your shopping experience to be exceptional. The GM did not ask me, how can I make this better for you because this should not have happened. He didn't say, I cant imagine what an inconvenience this is for you and what can we do to keep you as a customer because your business is important to us. The GM would barely look at me and talked to me through the passenger's side window. He said I can give put through a credit for your purchases. So here I am sitting in my vehicle without my groceries and he was so abrupt with me and downright rude. He acted as if was no big deal that I just spent nearly 2.5 hours of my afternoon and I am going home without my groceries; going home without the Valentine's Day cards I picked out for my Mother and without the special desserts I picked out for my Mom for Valentine's Day. The general manager returned to my vehicle and gave me my credit slip and I told him I wanted to talk to the general manager and he said he was the GM. I was shocked!!! I am saddened by that news that a General Manager, would act so rudely towards a customer. He gave me a gift card for .............$20. Yes, there was a $20 gift card..........what an insult to me! I wonder how he would like it if this to happened to him and does he think that his time and worth is a mere $20 bill, a less than sincere apology and a very poor excuse!!!!
