Whenever I am in a new town, I always gravitate toward the vegetarian-friendly establishments. When I found this place, I was pretty excited, because I have had some really good experiences in health food store cafeterias! I am really giving this place three stars, but one extra for service (as you might note below). The excellent: Upon entering the cafeteria area in the back of the store, one of the folks behind the cold/prepared foods counter greeted me, and I asked him about the options I could order for dinner. He was amazingly helpful, but to be honest, there really aren't that many vegetarian options on the menu. There is a hot food table, but I wanted more of a sandwich, so I ordered the falafel sandwich. It was different than any other falafel I have had (baked instead of fried), but it was fresh and tasty. The pricing was spot-on and fair. The meh: The seating area to eat, just past the cash registers is pleasant enough, but needed to be cleaned. It's very utilitarian, and served its purpose... but a more inviting space would certainly be welcome. Overall: Probably a 3.5. I stopped here on the search for more cheeses for my collection. The selection isn't huge but I did find some new ones. The section could use more care as there were many out of date cheeses, and one very moldy one right in front; I actually bought one a month past sell-by by choice, as I really wanted the cheese. I saw some cheeses dated as far back as February this year (it's the end of June). The market otherwise looked clean and maintained. read more

What a wonderful store featuring organic produce, local food, hot bar and a sandwich shop! I initially thought this was a Whole Foods store only to find out it's a local co-op, which is even better in my opinion. $100 for a lifetime membership fee that gives you extra 10% off every time you shop! I found some coconut yogurt and THC beverages to take on our hike. Wish there was one in central WI. Friendly staff and service. It's not a huge market but it's got a large bulk food section where you can get freshly ground nut butters! Highly recommend it for people looking for healthy and organic foods. read more

From out of town, I was totally impressed by this store and liked everything about it. Grocery stores have become enormous but the smaller ones are much more manageable. One doesn't have to search for items of high quality. Actually, everything seems to be of high quality. And, the person who checked me out was the most efficient cashier I've ever encountered and obviously super intelligent. It's always a pleasure to be around really smart people. read more

I don't normally shop for my groceries here (except for the odd thing here and there) but I do come here to make use of their hot/cold deli while I am traveling for work to find a hearty, healthier, and decent priced meal. I really enjoy their deli sandwiches including the egg salad on marble rye and the vegetable muffaletta on ciabatta, awesome sandwiches that blow any sandwich shop out of the water. And the blueberry bar that they carry from Positively Third St. Bakery is icing on the cake. I can usually get a tasty dinner to enjoy back at my hotel for less than 10 bucks. I am extremely disappointed in the fact that I was buying lunch from their deli only to find out they have seed oils in EVERY dish at ALL of their locations. This is a Whole Food Coop!! I could have spent half to get the same garbage at a local grocery store or gas station for that matter. Do better! Consumers are assuming, when going to a Whole Foods, they are spending extra to get better, clean ingredients. read more

Wow. It's not what I ever expected to rate this place, but its been 3 years since I've been here. What a change! Walked in to an absolutely freezing cold store, maybe 63 or 64 degrees max. Could not believe that a cooperative would be wasting resources like that. What's worse is the 3 employees I asked about it were flippant and dismissive. Other customers were walking around freezing as well. Two employees said it was because it was hot outside (72 degrees) and another said it was because it was humid outside! Unbelievable. I remember when the customer service associates would greet you and maybe even look at you. This is continually the worst customer service in Duluth. This is what "our" store provides us. With a large posting that everyone one is welcome at the front door. I sure don't feel welcomed. I only purchase items that I am unable to purchase at other stores here. I would do nearly all of my shopping here if the service wasn't horrible. Unfortunately, can't train them to care, or to not suck at their job. I'd imagine the wage reflects the demeanor. An incredibly diverse selection of organics and natural foods. The employees are incredibly friendly and helpful. They have a deli with prepared and foods they can cook or make for you, with plenty of options throughout the store for gluten-free, dairy-free and vegans (and more). Overall, a great store, which though pricy for Duluth, is still at or below health food store prices elsewhere. read more

Maybe someone can fill me in on the backstory here because I still don't really know how there can be a co-op named Whole Foods that is not associated with THE Whole Foods. But here it is... Whole Foods Co-op, as far as I can tell, not affiliated at all with the Whole Foods grocery chain. This has always been a curiosity to me, so I finally just made the time to stop in. It's a pretty typical co-op, with a nice selection of fresh produce, organic and natural bulk items and a really nice hot bar/to-go selection for people who want something quick for lunch. I also enjoyed that there seemed to be a nice selection of plants available too. Very nice little co-op. I'm sure we'll stop back, especially on visits when we're in Duluth for more than a day or two. read more

Honestly, we've been here several times, and if it weren't for a few good brands we are loyal to, we would not return. They have a decent organic selection, good dairy selection, a sandwich and coffee bar, and a hot food bar. The service is very hit or miss. Some employees are friendly and others have an air of superiority. Perhaps it's the co-op way. Lastly, their prices are high, which is a little expected, but also not so much as they are non profit. We bought vanilla extract at Target for $9.99 and the exact same (yes exact same) vanilla extract was for sale here for $13.89. (Simply Organic 2 oz.) Another example of an outrageous pricing practice--when you buy coffee beans if you do not bring a reusable bag they charge $0.25. Seriously, who does that? read more

Denfeld deli is always stocked well compared to Hillside. Often my favorite grab and go items are not available and the hot bar is not always open when it is advertised to be. More full time cooks are needed at the Hillside location. The managers should work more to fill in the gaps. read more

No, this is not part of the "Whole Foods" chain. A great health food coop. They have everything you would expect, and they don't go overboard in the cosmetics/supplements department (well, maybe if you expect five isles of cosmetics then they don't have everything you would expect). Nice deli with prepared foods, both hot and cold. Lots of organic foods. The produce is labeled where it came from, so if you're avoiding having your food shipped from all over the globe, you know what to buy and what not to. read more

Went to Duluth for the weekend. Needed some snacks and decided "why not go here". Holy smokes a mistake. We wanted some fresh fruit and veggies and stuff looked pretty much old and moldy. The oranges were actually brown. The strawberries we had mold when I opened them. And couldn't find any role bananas. Not good! read more

I love this place, but things are a bit on the pricey side. My favorite, favorite thing here for like the past 13 years (yeah, seriously!) has been their amazing pico de gallo salsa. It's surprisingly pretty cheap... and OMG, so good! It seriously is my favorite pico de gallo in the world, and sadly I live a whole lot closer to Mex than Duluth.... But yes -- not to be confused with Whole Foods Market. It is not. It's a Co-Op. And they do have some staples of mine that other grocers in Duluth don't have... like zevia soda. :) read more

We stopped in here on our way to Bayfield, WI...because I cannot go to Duluth without a pit stop here. I'm not sure if the grind-your-own peanut and almond butter is new, but it's the first time I've noticed it. We got a little container of the peanut butter and ate it almost immediately. YUM. In addition to healthy things to snack on, I grabbed a piece of vegan German chocolate cake. It was probably the most delectable thing I've put in my mouth in years. We made a point to stop back here on our way home from Bayfield because I wanted another piece of that cake, but it was all gone. *sniff* read more

This is a pretty comprehensive co-op with a wide range of bulk foods, vegan packaged goods (including hemp ice cream), and best of all, a hot bar and deli area with some vegan options. Duluth doesn't have too many places where you can get labeled vegan food, but this is one of them. I had a falafel wrap ($8) from the deli, which can be made vegan by substituting the garlic aioli instead of the yogurt sauce. It was decent, but not great. The whole thing was lacking salt, and the falafel was a bit too soft (I like it crunchy). Also, using a tortilla wrap instead of pita made the thing basically a glorified veggie wrap, more than anything else. My friend got some stuff from the hot bar, such as the pilaf, tempeh and a citrus bbq tofu ($7.99 per pound). There weren't too many vegan offerings other than those. From what I tasted, it was all pretty bland again, and needed salt and pepper, at the very least. We finished things off with a slice of chocolate raspberry cake ($2.99), which was decent, but a bit dry. All in all this is a solid co-op and fills a great niche in Duluth. The hot bar/deli foods need a bit more variety by way of vegan options, and also needs a flavor boost, but I'm still glad it's around. read more

I love my co-op. If there's anything you need, and it's not on the shelves, ask! They'll order it for you. I always find something new at the co-op and their sales are great. Sometimes their prices seem steep, but at other times, they carry items with a significantly lower price than the local supermarkets. For instance, I found soy milk at the Co-op for $2.99 and the same product, same size was $4.99 at Super One. Go figure! read more

When I first walked in here I thought I was in a hybrid store of Whole Foods chain store with Trader Joe's physical size (apparently this isn't related to the Whole Foods chain store). This is a good place for the health conscious. I tried looking for wild rice, but cringed at the pricing of $14 a pound, thus looked elsewhere. However, this soup of lemon grass chicken rice soup was refreshing & delicious! Would stop by here if I'm ever in this area again & feel the need to find unique soups or other healthy food items. Parking can be a pain to get out of when it's during peak hours since it's along a busy intersection. read more

Okay, this is not necessarily a review of the store itself - but sort of is. It's pricey. No fresh fish. The good point about it: it has a no-fee ATM inside! I have CHASE bank and refuse to let it go, so getting cash is a bit of a challenge for me. This is convenient except that it has a $200 limit. I'd rather shop at the SuperOne, personally. read more

One of the best grocery stores in Duluth! If you are looking for some fresh produce or locally grown products, I would recommend checking it out! (update 4/22/15): I started noticing that when I went to the Whole Foods Co-Op, they were often sold out of items that I was hoping to purchase. At the beginning of 2015, I started keeping track of how often they were out of items that I went there to get. As of today, they have been out of one or more items on my shopping list over 90% of the time. I got a to-go box for dinner from the deli. I ordered the soy-marinated chicken and garlic Parmesan mashed potatoes with mixed vegetables. I also got the blueberry pie slice. The main course was ok, chicken was fantastic. The blueberry pie however was TO DIE FOR! Everything was a lot more expensive than I thought it would be. Paid close to 12 dollars for the full meal. This is the best grocery store in Duluth. This is not your average ordinary whole foods and I am happy that it actually has nothing to do with the Whole Foods chain. I was looking at their website and I found out that this place is actually consumer owned. so the community has a lot of investment in this particular place. This means that for like $100 you can become part owner of this place. When you buy into this particular co-op you get discounts and coupons too. This makes me super happy. I was also happy to see that this place offers a number of different classes that the pubic can sign up for. I love the fact that I can pull their hot foods menu up on their website and you can also find recipes for dinner ideas and healthy treats. I like the fact that this place offers a great selection of organic products and vegan products too. They actually do have the best organic selection that ive found in Duluth. I love their choices when it comes to their pre prepared food. If im on my way to a family event or potluck, I will always stop here to pick something up to bring. This place has the most amazing and friendly staff that I have seen from any supermarket. The people are always extremely smiling, The associates are very knowledgeable and you will never see anyone that is working there who refuses to help you when you need it. Love my local co-op! Their deli is amazing, and the menus get switched up. I LOVE the cheesy potatoes, and the wild rice hot dish. Love that they have vegetarian options, and basically it is the place to go if you have dietary restrictions. Either they have it or can order it. Staff are always pleasant and welcoming. There is so much packed into this little store. Fresh, in season, local, organic, and healthy; they have a little bit of everything and a lot of cool stuff that you never knew existed. If you're the type of person who likes to peruse through a grocery or health food store to get ideas and put a meal together then this is the place for you. A little different from the corporate Whole Foods. Shop here to support the local Duluth community. Staff is pretty friendly here and they are willing to special order items and are generally educated on what they carry in the store. It's nice to have this grocery in Duluth amongst the one or two other choices in the area; the private parking lot is also an added bonus. In addition to all the grocery has to offer, they have a fantastic food bar. They've got salad, entrees, sides, cookies, muffins, pies, cakes, a coffee bar, and more! Not only is most of it organic, good tasting, and good for you, but I love the fact that they list the ingredients on everything on the salad/entree bar. A lot of the baked goods at the bar are from local bake shops so it's also a great way to sample things from all over. You grab one some to-go containers and fill them as much as you'd like, grab some napkins and utensils, and take the stuff up to the registers to pay. The bar is priced per pound and is actually pretty inexpensive for the quality. They have a little seating area in the front with a view of the lake to enjoy your afternoon lunch. read more
