Wonderful place! Great coffee, sandwiches, and bread. Will definitely be back when in Duluth.

    French Toast

Pumpkin Chip Muffin? THE best. If you are lucky enough to get one of these during the fall season, and better yet fresh out of the oven, be prepared for bliss. As you may be aware, some muffins only have their top crust going for them and lead to a lackluster and sometimes dry interior, but nope, not this one. This muffin looks extremely unassuming, but you dig into this orange delight and the pumpkin flavor and hint of chocolate explode in harmony. The flavors are, from start to finish, equally as amazing. Extremely moist and gooey throughout; you will not be able to get enough. Great Harvest is a very good choice for a quick breakfast. Not a lot on the breakfast menu, but you must try the breakfast panini and some french toast. The panini has a really good chipotle mayo that goes great with the pepeprjack cheese and banana peppers. The french toast is made with their bread and is served with real maple syrup. Portions are a little small, but the prices are low so you can have a few menu items at once. I'm sure to be a regular at this scratch-made bakery cafe! Some of the friendliest service I have experienced, VERY unpretentious; you immediately feel comfortable talking with all of the staff here, and they are quick to welcome you in and offer you samples. Hooray! Anyway, I stopped in for a quick sampling of a few items. I tried a surprise smoothie (I had the waitress mix something to her liking), a maple cookie, and their chili soup of the day (I know, it's a weird combination, but I like food). Everything was absolutely wonderful. The smoothie was obviously fruity and well sized; the maple cookie was soft, moist, and the maple flavor was robust; and the chili had just the right about of kick, and was packed with beef, beans, and vegetables. I can't wait to come back to try sandwiches, panini, and their tempting breakfast menu. Free and hassle-free WiFi is available, the ambiance is quiet, and if you sit by the window there is a view of the parking lot, street, and maybe a little bit of the lake. It's interesting to notice they have some old-school weighing balance scales sitting on the counter by the window where you eat. Obviously good for decor, but I imagine they are perfect for ensuring an accurate division of cookies, muffins, and treats between the people of your party (just to make sure everyone gets an equal share). Lots of selection, daily specials of breads and treats, local coffee, scratch made and wholesome food, and very friendly staff; an all-in-one spot for a quick brunch, lunch, or afternoon pick-me-up.

I think this guy greeted us in the fall of 2007. It is still one of my favorite pics.

I saw they have frozen pretzels- which is perfect because I didn't want to eat it right now. I got two of those to go. I also got a blueberry danish for my husband- he approved! And two loaves of bread- the cheese curd and the rosemary onion in the one pound option. (They have a two pound and it's huge!) We enjoyed the bread toasted with butter and for avocado toast during the week. They offered to slice the rosemary onion bread but not the cheese curd- there's something about the cheese curd that they said they don't slice it. I can't remember. But it's fine/ we sliced our own. The pecan rolls and the cinnamon rolls looked amazing but I'm more of a savory gal. The shop was super cute. They have a sourdough class coming up. They have coffees and couches. Bathrooms for customers. Some merchandise for sale. They even have a monthly club where you can pick up or have your items delivered to you! Wow! I wish I lived in the area just for this bakery. We enjoyed the best old fashioned before dinner and were not rushed at all to order our food. We did order a beet salad and a Caesar salad and both were great choices. The beet salad was the better one for me. It had just enough balsamic dressing without drowning the ingredients. For entrees, we ordered the rigatoni with the spicy red sauce and sausage added as recommended by Maddie, our waitress, and the butternut squash, candied pancetta herb pasta with pecans. Both pastas were very good. The butternut squash pasta had a few too many whole pecans, but had excellent flavor. For dessert we shared a lemon gelato with sugar cookie. That was the BEST! We sat in the Grotto area with a gorgeous view of Superior. Beautiful night to be seated there. This is a restaurant not to miss if you are in the Duluth area. But make your reservation or you may miss out.

Located…read moreconveniently in the center of Canal Park, we stopped by on a sunny Wednesday early afternoon, hoping to score some of the best sandwiches in town. Even though this was well past lunch time at 2PM, the outside patio was packed and there was a line of 10 people or so to contend with to order at the register. Due to how busy it was, our food took about 20 minutes to arrive. The Squealy Dan, Porketta ($16) - Unlike most other restaurants with Iron Range Porketta, Northern Waters slices their porketta thinly instead of pulling the pork apart. It has a pleasant spiced flavor and the texture feels as if it's cured rather than roasted. It's relatively tender, and while they give a decent amount of meat, it's completely overshadowed by the heavy spicy quality of the black pepper and the acidity and vegetalness of the crunchy pepperoncini. There's a bit of melted gooey provolone on top of the porketta. While nice, there's not enough to balance out the peppers. This is all on a crusty almost baguette-like hero roll, toasty and warm. The sandwich is served with a side dip that's essentially black pepper and pepperoncini water. Definitely not needed given how overwhelming those elements are in the sandwich. (3/5) Pastrami Mommy ($19) - I haven't had bison pastrami before. Now I know why it's not very common - it's way too lean and dry compared to beef pastrami. Still, it's nicely spiced and peppery, and there's not much of the bison gamey flavor since it's cooked out from the curing. There's a little bit of mayo underneath and some mustard on top, but it's not enough moisture or fat in my opinion to counteract the leanness of the bison. While there are some slices of provolone above the meat, they are served cold. I feel like melting it with the pastrami on the griddle would do wonders to help develop some more unctuousness. It's also served on cold rye - perhaps toasting with some butter would also help. Otherwise, the sandwich is just too dry and lean for my tastes. (3/5) I feel like I ordered the wrong items. I probably should have gone with some of the seafood sandwiches, but I found it strange they only serve Atlantic salmon rather than local lake fish. In the end, I appreciate that Northern Waters Smokehaus makes most of their meats in house, but after trying their food, I feel like it's more hype than substance. Bathrooms - Larger ones located upstairs, shared with the rest of the businesses in the mini mall. Note: Northern Waters Smokehaus charges a 3% credit card fee. This is disclosed on a sign at the front register. Food: [3/5] Service: [ ] Other: [+] Final Rating: 3/5
