Pastor Matt's messages are Holy Spirit led, well thought out and easy to apply to your life. After church Pastor Matt prayed for me about my upcoming move, and i definitely know that was some Holy Spirit prayer because i could literally sense the fear lifting off and peace flowing into my heart. Recently I had to come to find that they stopped doing the mass at 8 because there started to be a decline in attendance AND the mass was intended for young adults, but older people were coming. Which is fine really, but all the homilies were geared towards the young adult community. The church is your traditional massive grandiose church. I wonder if this church is considered a landmark or something because it has that vintage historical feel.Plenty of parking by the church, on the street and also conjoining with the church is the parish school, so there is parking there too. They have masses on Sat. at 5, then obviously on Sunday at 8 am, 10 am, and 6 pm. This is usually my back up church in case I don't make it to my 1.2 mile church that's by my neighborhood. There are opportunities to fellowship through monthly meals, Bible studies, community groups, and different outreach ministries. The Lord's Day usually looks like this: morning service, fellowship break, prayer meeting/Sunday school. The exceptions are second Sunday there is usual morning service, fellowship break, and an evening service; and on the last Sunday, there is a fellowship meal after the morning service. The Lord's Supper is observed every week, with it being observed in the evening service on the second Sunday. GBC is a doctrinally-sound and Christ-centered Church.

My friend and I attended the 5:00 PM Mass, and walking in, the church was beautiful. It was definitely a bit smaller than I expected, but it still felt very spacious. The community and environment were very friendly, which I really appreciated. One thing to note is that they have a "Blue" book that contains all the songs sung during Mass, and it can usually be found somewhere toward the front of the church. I do wish this had been mentioned when we first walked in, since I only found out about it from another person. Overall, it was a really good experience, and I would definitely come back!

There is a pretty garden on the side of the church, with a columned courtyard and even a grotto for Saint Bernadette, with a pond that has sadly been drained, so all that one sees is the concrete bottom. A silver haired man is the cantor leading the music, and he is excellent. The various priests seem nice, although two weeks ago at the 7:00 a.m. Sunday Mass, a deacon went on an anti-choice rant that was unexpected and not welcome. In fact, one man walked out during the middle of the babbling tirade, and I don't blame him!

Unfortunately, the preaching was amongst the worst I have ever seen and heard in a church context. It was incredibly dry (as dry as cracker juice), and lacking in any spiritual sustenance whatsoever. It is difficult to fathom how that is possible. It was difficult to stay awake during the preaching parts of the services, no matter who was on stage. My conclusion is that the people "preaching" were either not preparing for their messages, or they were not in the right vocation. I have since been exposed to lots of preaching, and even people newly saved have more than what I heard and saw from the preachers at City View. The other issue is spiritual abuse from the pulpit. It happened a lot, and that is an even more serious issue than the awful, boring, dry preaching. It should not be tolerated. In terms of presentation from the stage, worshippers and presenters who are tattooed should cover their tattoos. Even in a business context, workers must cover their ugly tattoos. The only so called "branding" should be that of the business. How much more a church?

We parked at their house and walked over to a crowded church parking lot. It's not a neighborhood secret anymore. The view overlooking Mission Bay is impressive. It was a clear evening so we were able to see multiple fireworks shows around the bay, with Sea World/Fiesta Island being the nearest. If you ever happen to drive up this hill, take a moment to stop and enjoy this vantage point.
