The tour was eye opening on the amount of devistation and change that can take place so quickly in a catastropic event. The museum was centered around events and the history of the surrounding area with flood details and the history of the Cowlitz Tribe particularly interesting. A narrative regarding a cabin and the history of the cabin and its owners was very effective. Highly recommend it, especially if the Docent we encountered was there. The ticket comes with a tour of an actual boat, which we did first, it's a steep ladder to go down into the boat so I would recommend only to people in better health. You can walk on top of the boat as well if you can't go down inside. The actual museum itself is so well curated and has SO many rooms and exhibits to look at. They have 3D movie options which we didn't do, but the museum itself is beautifully done and worth it if you have time in Astoria.

Also, she keeps you abreast of the openings and closings of the museum. The museum is typically closed during the winter season but opens during the weekends in the summer months. The last time I was there she said you are the first ones in so no charge. I bought a pin on the way out for $10 as I want to support this great and fun place. She doesn't have a true gift shop as of yet. But they are moving around the exhibits to put one in the front of the museum. I'm excited as they had a small one in the middle of the downstairs in the past and they had some fun items. Most of the stuff you have to see to believe and it's all unbelievably quirky which adds to the overall fun of the place. I try to go each time I'm in town. It's well worth the $5 admission. I'll definitely be back again.

They've plastered the walls in signs and dates offering hours of reading should you have the time and/or inclination. We did not...but we certainly enjoyed around an hours worth of wandering and learning more about the history of the area. Cool stop in Astoria.

Located about 10-15 miles before Cascade Lake (the end of the road), this rest stop is a 'must stop!' I took some beautiful pics to mark this sunshiny day. There are plenty of parking stalls, accessible bathrooms, and the gift shop sells snacks, too! The next time you head out to the mountain, stop here and take a load off!

Goonies never say…read more..... Some movies are classics. I will forever love watching the Goonies. It has always been one of my favorites. The fact it was made in my home state of Oregon just makes it a little bit more awesome. Being in Astoria on vacation made this house a bucket list item. We didn't need to look through the windows at what the new owners had done. Or take items. There is a donation box. Please help pay for the constant vandalism. There was a time a previous owner had stopped access for obvious reasons. Let's try and respect the current owner and not keep the true fans from enjoying a bit of Oregon movie history. Just being in front of this actual lived in house from the Goonies movie is amazing. I really enjoyed thinking about all the movie scenes and how cool it would have been to be on set for filming. So much history. I know we've seen it already but I can't wait to see it up close again.

It's in a neighborhood on a private driveway. Be sure to not park in their driveway or the neighbor's spot. You can park in the neighborhood somewhere and walk up. There's a sign at the bottom of the driveway too, the owners know people will come by to take photos etc, so they aren't bothered by it. Just be respectful and you'll be fine. For any inconvenience, they put out a donation bin if you want to drop a few dollars for coming by. Cool to see the house that I admired as a little kid. Glad to have come by to snap a few photos and see it in person. We walked the neighborhood too, we were out of there in like 20 mins. Childhood memory fulfilled.

Had no idea about the history of canned fish here on the columbia, and seeing the old pictures of rows of workers cleaning and packing fish made me think hard about how easy i have it. Those people mustve worked their butts off. And the wooden fishing boats, amazing, you'd never get me into one of those out on the river/ocean! As an engineer, I enjoyed the 'power room'; pretty cool for the mechanically/electrically minded. Be sure to drop some $$ into the donation box. Surprised this isnt mentioned anywhere in travel guides or 'things to do' - we just stumbled on it while eating next door at the Rogue. If you look at the pictures, the same light fixtures are used in the Rogue restaurant! "As good as it gets" for a cannery museum; worth a visit if you're interested in that branch of history.
