Mount Trashmore is a really nice spot to bring the family, especially if you have young kids. It was actually a fun bonus location that we added to our trip to Va Beach. A great place to picnic or exercise. It has a huge playground, and a skate park. The top of mount trash more overlooks a lake, and the whole area is great for taking photos. Don't let them name throw you off. My family had a lot of fun just exploring the area. read more

It's being remodeled and I'm so curious how it'll turn out! The city's need more parks like this! If they added a small music venue to it, that'd be cool. I'm actually surprised they don't have more events here. If they could set something up on top of the mountain of trash overlooking downtown VB, it would have a sweet backdrop! The kids play place is pretty cool with it being rubberised. It's used a ton by what I can tell. (It's not like I can play over there and just watching the kids would probably creep people out). I guess this is one park that I have been remiss in reviewing and unsure why. I am a regular at the park, but find myself more likely in Kids Cove which encompasses Mount Trashmore Park. This Virginia Beach park has the largest volume of visitor of any other. It has more than a dozen, or more small parks combined easy. The property is expansive, guessing at least 30 acres. That includes a lot! The mound which is a former dump now covered over with a protective cover and grass grown on it. This is an ideal location to fly kites on a breezy day and you will see a lot of activity of just that when you climb up. It is well maintained and mowed weekly on season. The views are pretty cool of Town Center and of course the kids will have a ball climbing, or rolling down the mound. In the Winter there is no sledding allowed when snow accumulates on it. Access to the park is from two entry points. Edwin is one and the other is South. The main parking area is located off of the frontage road that follows I264. Parking has never been a problem even on weekends, but holidays is a different story. Kids Cove which is a newer kids playground and fantastic. It has it's own business page and I have written a review. It has parking very close which makes it very easy for families with young children. There are restrooms located in this area. They are not great and in need of an update. They are unfortunately often vandalized and graffiti can be found. A very large pond which can be fished is on the Holland Road side. It has a path for jogging/running and it used extensively. A smaller playground is located by the pond too! A skate park and BMX park is on the East side and also has it's own parking. This is a huge hit and is the original park and to this day only park to accommodate bikes and skaters. There are different types events held throughout the year, but none bigger than the 4th of July. They do a superb job at this location and a bonus is you can usually see others going off from other area cities. Also a ton of small covered and non covered picnic areas. Only two large ones I can think of, but may be more. So what holds this park back from a five for me. Restrooms and constant debris. The city does a fantastic job at maintaining the debris, but it still not good enough because there are so many visitors that elect to throw down trash instead of using the many receptacles all around the entire property. This park in most respects is our central city park. It is the largest, has the most volume of visitors and has nice amenities. If you drive by it on the highway, but have never been make a point to visit soon. read more

What an awesome place for outdoor fun! I wish I lived closer because you bet I'll get my butt here all the time to tire my dogs out haha I went on a weekend to check the place out with my dogs. One of the many things to love are the many parking areas you'll find. They're definitely needed since it gets PACKED. The place is beautiful, clean, and offers many things. Picnic tables, a view, and an amazing playground for kids. You'll meet many dog owners along the way and it really is a great place to walk your dog or just exercise outdoors. Speaking of exercise, around the lake they have mini workout stations for your enjoyment! The walk around the lake is 1.5 miles so be prepared and bring water for yourself and/or your dogs. Some of the parts of the park were closed when I visited so I mostly stayed in the area by the pond, but I still enjoyed it! Lots of people out having fun with nature, nice view on the water, good place to watch the sunset. Saw a family of ducks roaming about and got everyone excited to see what they would do next. This is a fantastic park! Built on a landfill, it has become something beautiful and fun for locals and tourists alike. If you have little ones, they will run their little legs off at this park. There is so much for them to do and see. Plenty of swings, slides and other fun stuff to climb on. For the adults, there are walking paths, big hills to climb and places to bike or roller blade. I never thought that a landfill can be turned into something so beautiful and useful. The other around the lake was a nice place for a stroller walk. I saw plenty of runners, bikers, rollerbladers, and walkers using the path. It is roughly 2 miles in length depending on which route you take. The path has exercise stations with various equipment that look brand new. Towards the interstate, there is a skate park and a large playground for kids of all ages. It was super busy, so we decided to skip it with our toddler. We took the stairs up to the top of the hill and enjoyed the nice view and breeze. By the time we got back to the car, our little boy was tired out and happily slept on the way home. read more

I love watching the kites fly on top of the "mountain" and there are several "mini" parks that the kids can play at if the main one gets too crowded. A beautiful park in the heart of Virginia Beach! Mount Trashmore has long paved trails throughout the park. The park also has a playground, skatepark, pond, picnic shelters, some workout equipment stations, and tons of parking - ALL FREE. Climbing up to the top of the Mount is fun for a beautiful view of the park. It is an excellent place to get outside and moving, have a picnic, fly a kite, and enjoy being outside. There aren't many trees or shaded areas in the park so if you plan on going for a long time bring sunscreen. The bathrooms are also very clean. Highly recommend! read more

Nothing is better than some time spend at Mount Trashmore on a sunny day. This spot is perfect for kids (there is a large playground) and adults alike. I often see folks working out, relaxing, or playing when I come out here. One of my favorite things to do is to walk around the park (one lap is a little less than a mile) to clear my mind and enjoy the weather. There's also a large body of water in the middle of the park which is especially appealing in the evening. The park isn't open past sunset so make sure to plan for that. read more

A true "hidden gem." The park has recently added two new bathroom areas, an amphitheater, a deck overlooking the lake, ample benches for seating, and picnic pavilions. There is ample green space for kids to run and play, and a trail around the lake with enough room to accommodate bicyclists, runners and walkers. Over the summer of 2016, this one that just passed, I had an insanely intense "threesome" with my Fitbit, the Oceanfront (boardwalk) & this place, the wonderful Mount of Trash, better known as Mt. Trashmore. Didn't know which among the 3 I loved most; I was devoted to all of them. I'm upgrading this place from 3 stars to 4.5 because it definitely is a great spot - the picnic tables, the nicely paved paths for walking, running, biking, skipping, (whatever you like.) You can reserve the shelters for parties and any events and BBQs (the smell will get you though, esp when you're working out and and you get a whiff of it. Makes you just want to stop and crash whoever's party!) Kids Cove is always packed, especially on the weekends, holidays, or any days with the sun shining! Same goes for skating park. The bathrooms are ok; they could use a bit of upgrading, but in general, they are maintained & get the job done. Parking is great; the only time you may have issues are holidays, especially the 4th of July, and during big "walking/running" events. Before this gets any longer, I'll just say that Mount Trashmore is a GREAT place to relax, walk your dog, walk for causes (i.e. Breast Cancer, the Heart Walk, walk for Suicide Awareness,) & for you fellow Fitbit freaks, a place to get your steps and miles in, a place to go Pokémon hunting, get your Rocky on (running up and down them steps,) and EVEN a place to propose or get proposed to (happened to my best friend, on top of the mountain on a starry night.) I love going to this place with my 1 year old. We walk around the track and stop at the play ground. It's usually packed in nice weekends in the morning but we still have fun. They have a soft ground for those kiddos who are learning how to walk so you can let them go free. Everyone is friendly, it's very peaceful. read more

This park is actually called Mt. TRASHmore!! But it is far from being trashy! It's actually a beautiful park and very impressive. The story I was told is that it use to be a landfill and they converted it into a rolling hilly park with a running/walking path, a lake, skate park, small skate halfpipe, and children's playground. I went on a Thursday late afternoon and was surprised at how crowded it was! Especially the children's playground! There were so many kids it was insane. I can see now how kids could easily be abducted because it's a madhouse in that area and I would find it hard to keep an eye out the whole time. The half pipe was pretty cool, I could spend all day watching people eat it on that thing! I really dig this place! There is so much to do, experience and see in this park - more than meets the eye! - or the daily drivers on 264. One of my absolute favorite things to do here, is climb up top, put a blanket down, bring out my hot tea, face the beach and enjoy the sunrise. It is a view like no other. Unfortunately for me, I'm not the regular early bird so this doesn't happen very often, but when it does, it is a wonderful treat. Also a great place for some outdoor fun! Bring your running shoes and get to jogging, or a football to throw around, or your phone for some Pokemoning. Mount Trashmore appeals to all! There is a nice pond you can walk around, a few nice paths, some workout stations, and even a playground. Also, they have LOTS of events always happening so check your schedule for some family fun and activity on the regular. The idea that this used to be a landfill is fascinating to me (weird, that's me). There is something about being able to change and "improve" a space like this that puts things in perspective. If you haven't been here yet you really should put it on your calendar. This is a welcoming, clean, FREE and well thought out park, and it doesn't smell like trash! My husband surprised me with a picnic and kite flying adventure. No kidding. He even got fried chicken, sides, and a well hidden cold bottle of white wine. He is for rent, message me. After our lunch at one of the covered picnic table we headed for the hill. We brought along our 14 yr. old Aussie so opted for the grassy hill side climb instead of the steps, it isn't as steep as it looks. We had a lovely time flying kites and enjoying the beautiful day. A note on dogs... very pet friendly with clean-up bags available. Don't scoop and pay up to $1000.00. I like that.... you only have to worry about goose poop. read more

Okay let me start off by saying the park itself is wonderful and amazing! Now that is over with, let me get down to the reason why I dislike going here so flipping much. I hate the people who flock here. I have been attempting to go here for two years now with my son. I feel like this is the wanna-be parent park to go to. By that I mean that the parents who usually let their kids play video games all day or never spend any time with their kids go here. The reason I say this is because the kids and parents here act like they have no sense. I, myself, am in fact a young parent, but seriously I watch my kid and don't let him act like a wild banshee. How is it that me being 22 years old with an almost five year old son can make sure my kid doesn't try to jump all over you and your family, but these older 'responsible' parents can't control their brats? The people here are so brain dead to me, they act like just because it is a park that they can do whatever they like. This includs letting their little kids run up to someone flying a kite and try to take it out of their hands... seriously this has happened to us on more than one occasion and more than one time per trip there. Now I won't even go into trying to explain going to the actual playground because I will most likely somehow find the yelp word limit on here. Just, if you are a sensible parent, avoid this park altogether and go to Red Wood park. Yes it is a little out of the way, but at least the parents and kids aren't crack heads there. read more

As far as public parks go I was insanely impressed with this area. It has pretty large picnic area, nice beautiful scenery with large, expansive hills as well as a pretty lake and nice trail. I grew up visiting Mt Trashmore since my grandparents were almost lifelong residents of Virginia Beach. Going to the big wooden playground was the highlight for my brother and me when we came to town. We stopped through on our way from Charleston to Ocean City so we could visit with my aunt and let the kids run around before embarking on the last leg of our journey. I was sad to see that the wooden playground had been replaced by more updated structures but the kids had a blast so I can't complain. We went to the back playground that is closer to the skate park. There were a few shade structures with picnic tables underneath which was nice. I wish the actual play structures had more shade, though. The bathrooms were well kept, which was nice to find. Many public restrooms are disgusting! One day I'll run the path around the park, but that day is not today. read more

I love that Virginia Beach was able to turn a former landfill into a city park. Growing up in Virginia Beach, I forget how strangely unique that is. But originality aside, it's not even close to my favorite park in the area. On one hand... -It's one of the best places to run (or walk) in Virginia Beach. There are several trails around the lake and hills. If you are really hard core, you can run up/across the mountain for more intense training. -The skate park is pretty sick and has a 13-foot half pipe. In fact, I rarely see anyone with the nerve and skill to attempt it. -They have great fireworks for Independence Day. -The mountain is fun for flying a kite or rolling down it. -The park is kid-friendly with playgrounds and a paved trail good for strollers. -Free and easy parking. Yes, that actually exists in Virginia Beach. On the other hand: - There's a big lake and nothing you can do with it. There are no paddle boats or canoes anymore, you are not supposed to feed the ducks, dogs can't swim in it...pretty much you look at it. Maybe that's for the best because we're talking about a pool of water that is next to a trash dump. -No trees and no shade. On a hot summer day, it's pretty miserable there. At least add some fountains or misters or something. -There should be more activities available at this huge park. Other smaller area parks offer disc golf, horse shoe pits, ball fields, corn hole, off-leash dog parks, hopscotch, you get the idea. -The view from up top: I-264. Eh. This park has great potential. Maybe one day we'll see the City put more resources into it. read more

Mt Trashmore has changed so much since I was a kid and all for the better! It's so family friendly and it's literally a free outdoor gym when the weather's nice. I went this weekend with my mom for some fresh air and was really surprised at how busy it was. The paved trail loops around the whole hill and lake area and is good for walking/jogging, but it would be difficult on a bike with all the weaving in and around people. Along the trail they have these machines with instructions on how to do various exercises you can do to target certain areas of your body. It's a nice touch and fun way to keep your walk entertaining. Parking is plentiful and easy here. I can see myself coming to Mt Trashmore more often for nice walks and picnics. My only gripe is that if you come here, you are 99% likely going to step in some goose poop... that ish is everywhere. read more

I really love taking my children to the park here..they have a blast!! It is HUGE, we all love taking turns rolling down the hill and flying kites. I think my most favorite part about it though is the big park here is padded..yes folk..i said padded.it they fall that's ok no more scrapped knees or splinters in exchage for a fun day at the park, no siree just fun and cushiony falls Normally we stop by mcdonalds or some other grab n go place and have some lunch at the picnic tables n run around and scream and play..yes me too.. The dump; the dump-oh no, that's one of my favorite furniture haunts. This was Mt. Trashmore baby and I love it. Now, I've had some experience up north with some of the "varsity" landfills; such as Detroit and Chicago. Compared to them Trashmore is the Garden of Eden. Detroit has an eternal flame flaring almost 24/7 attended to by numerous squadrons of seagulls and TM has a lake-with ducks and geese? Note: they also use the dump in Romulus, MI as part of the glide path for Metro Airport. We had a picnic at Trashmore as well. I can't imagine doing that in the other dumps I've seen. And people jogging, dogs on the leash, and kids at a playground. Now, I know this wasn't the botanical gardens but judged by what it started out as I would have to say it does a fine job. Flew our kites that day and for the first time in my life didn't lose any. Although it sounds funny if I was playing tour guide for my friends in the frozen north I'd take them here to show them how they do it at least in some parts of the south. read more
