I am in love with this charming city park. Maybe it's just me, but I am giddy every time I come with family, or just by myself to walk among the tall majestic pines. It offers almost everything you could want in a public recreation area. Anyone that resides in Virginia Beach has driven by the entrance more times than they can count. However, you will have to divert off of Great Neck road down Shorehaven Dr. It's just little less than a half mile going by Cox H.S. and Great Neck Recreational Center to access it. Broad Bay Country Club is across the street the opposite direction. Here are the two highlights of Great Neck Park for me personally. First the newer upgraded play equipment with the soft material that is being installed on many playgrounds to prevent injuries is a huge improvement. Second the beautiful and moving memorial trail that takes you to a gazebo, then the shore of the Lynnhaven River. The memorial is for seven U.S. soldiers that lost their life when the helicopter they were aboard suffered a catastrophic failure and crashed 1,000 feet from the location of the head stone. The setting is a spectacular and fitting tribute to these brave Men and Women that served our country and died hero's. What are you waiting for if you have yet to visit this scenic property. The setting is jaw dropping gorgeous. Great Neck Park offers plenty of parking and has all of the amenities of a full service park. I think you too will agree this is a super area to recreate that the whole family can partake in and make memories to last a life time.

This park is dead drop gorgeous with its wooden trail to a gazebo that honors the life of fallen heroes that crashed on a helicopter, while also having a view of the bay. There's multiple shelters to reserve and bring the whole family in and use their complimentary grill (just bring charcoal and lighter fluid!). There's basketball hoops to practice your shot and they have restrooms available for use, along with park rangers in case you need assistance with anything. If you have kiddies, take them to the playground they'll have a blast. I've been going to this park for years and I highly recommend this beautiful gem.

This is a very nice park in a great location! We frequent the recreation center next door and my kids also play ball across the street. So, this park is a great place to hit up when we are in the area. I like the wooded area around it and nice picnic areas. The floor of the park is nice and soft. It is shaded for those warmer days. This is one of my kids favorite parks!

I actually love this park, it's extremely relaxing and has a great layout. There's a trail that leads up to a lake with a memorial for military members who lost their lives in a helicopter crash in that specific lake. They have an enormous basketball court, and fairly good sized park for the kiddies. It also has an amazing field for sports. I come here often and each time it is very pleasant.

Fun playground with a huge climbing structure, several slides, swings and climb-on toys. The park is well-maintained with several walking paths. Find a few geocaches here!

Great Neck Park is a large, wooded city park with basketball courts, playgrounds and shelters. But what makes this park unique is it's large gazebo overlooking the Lynnhaven Bay. Turns out, this is a fantastic wedding venue. I've been to a wedding at the park with about 60 guests, where chairs were set up for a beautiful sunset ceremony. The gazebo also hosts early morning yoga classes for the Virginia Beach Recreation Center.

And no, I'm not referring to sketchy taboo adult activities - because this is a family park! Like basketball? You can totally play here... when the court isn't flooded... so maybe once a week if you're lucky! There's also a killer juvenile obstacle course for all the junior operators in your family unit - and a legit tire swing with a 100% artificial, non-organic tire to lose your lunch on whilst spinning like a nut-job! Think that's all? No way man! There's grass, lots and lots of grass for your dog to sniff and relieve itself on... just be sure to pack everything out in an air-tight container (cause it's the law)! "Yo, is that a Blackhawk hovering over my head?" You might ask yourself that at least once during your visit here - the answer is yes, but shhhhhhh... OPSEC. Come play kids! PS, only 4 stars for the constant flooding and low level of city maintenance. But it's the safest park in the city!

The meters cost about $2/ hour and the lots vary in price. There is a restroom facility right across the boardwalk from it, which is a plus. This play park is the epitome of accesible parks. It is titled the "Park for Everybody". The amazing park/play area is 15,000 square feet and features wheelchair accessible entrances. It was built in honor of Josh Thompson, an avid beach lover, who lost his battle with ALS. Josh's family wanted to go to the beach, but he stayed behind because of the difficulty of getting his wheelchair to the beach, across the sand and down to the surf. The park is very nice and has a huge jungle gym with a couple of slides, a sculptural of a dolphins, a surfboard, and a wave that children can play on, raised sand tables for sandcastle building at an accessible height, a sensory board for autistic children, Sway Fun glider, and a pebble walk. What I find really cool is that they have fully accessible playground -beach wheelchairs available at no charge, on a first come, first served basis (only during season though). You will also find some cement pads here, with post marking the spots, that are covered with a little sand, making playing in the sand more accessible. Just outside of the park is a nice statue of a man and young boy holding surf boards. The sculpture is on top of a granite base that has the names of donors and the inspiration behind the park inscribed on it. Definitely worth a look. This first of its kind park is a very nice addition to VIrginia Beach's Boardwalk. It is accessible and fun for all kids to play on. They do suggest that it is best for kids aged 5 to 12. I love everything about this park. There should be more of these around.

It has a playground, raised sand trays, and sculptures kids can play on and take photo opps with. It is also an accessible park. The park is very clean overall. -- The Playground -- The playground area with soft foam flooring to minimize injuries (under the sand that got blown over it) is best for younger elementary school aged children. With close supervision it's also good for younger children (note that there are small gaps in the openings along the playground system). The equipment is in mostly good condition with small areas of wear. There are a variety of slides and ways to climb up and access the slides, along with monkey bars and climbing activities. There are also raised, connected walkways connecting the system of slides and a lookout point. The playground is in partial sun with some sections fully shaded by canopies (pictured). -- Benches & Pavilions -- There is one built in table with benches by the front of the playground. There are several benches along the perimeter of the playground. -- Walking Areas -- This is less of a park and more of a large playground situated on a beach. -- Sporting Equipment -- There are no other equipment options other than the playground. -- Amenities -- There are no toilet amenities at the playground, but there are restrooms with plumbing located very close by: 2nd Street Restrooms, which has year-round operation and is managed by the City. -- Parking -- There is a municipal parking lot close by--2nd Street Parking Lot--where any visitors can park for a fee. The next closest lot is Rudee Loop Parking Lot (also a municipal parking lot with a fee). Both are located on Atlantic Ave. There is limited meter parking, too. Visitors to the area staying at the Oceanfront could also walk there. -- Things to Note -- During peak seasonal times, it's usually pretty busy with kids. There is no fence or physical boundary between the park and the water, but it is situated well enough away from the water that it didn't pose an immediate safety concern. -- Takeaways -- This is an large, accessible playground that is a nice option for my toddler when we visit the Boardwalk, and I can see it appealing to families visiting the beach who have kids with varying interests. The main attraction is its playground. If you are at the Boardwalk, it's worth a visit for children. It might not be worth it to you to go out of your way if you don't intend to visit the ocean or Boardwalk, too, or if you aren't interested in its accessibility features. Simply because paying for parking at the Oceanfront and sand in the kids shoes' could be a few minor drawbacks.

It's much larger than I expected and I love the dog park, large green area with the small three children's play areas, paved bike/running trails and the entire area. It's very big and there are several walking/hiking trails inside the main portion of the park spanning several miles and meandering through a wooded area that follows the marsh. It's well-kept and has multiple entrances from the Shadowlawn neighborhoods. -The entrance from VA Ave has a very small parking lot and then street parking. -The entrance from Indian Rd. has a much larger parking lot with plenty of space and opens to the large, green field with 3 separate play areas for toddlers with climbing sculptures in the shape of frogs and caterpillars. Really cute and has a pavilion and circular paved trail around it. -The entrance from Marshview Dr. has a small lot and this is where the dog park area is as well. Two tennis courts here across the street which are part of a small playground/tennis complex called Salt Marsh Park. Last weekend I finally went for a hike inside and covered about 1/3rd of the likable/walkable space. It's gorgeous! It's also neat bc they have it set up for trail bike riding and it's very well marked and laid-out. I came upon some beautiful areas for sitting and enjoying the view. If you haven't ventured here yet you should give it a try - actually pretty impressive in size and option for a neighborhood co-located park.
