Just joined (Month of May Discount), tried out for 30 days & decided well worth it. Plenty of lighted parking areas. Front Desk & Tour was great. Once enrolled, easy check-in, so far always greeted. The facility stays clean, the pool, showers, equipment. Love the in-door track above one of the ice-rinks. Stays nice & cool, and sometimes you have skaters to watch while doing laps. . Wife already tried a class & enjoyed it. They release updated schedules regularly. The pool is awesome, only have had to share a lane once. They have a diving board & climbing wall in the deep end. They have a nice shallow area for families. Locker rooms have plenty of lockers, showers. A little short on benches. They also have a climbing wall (not my thing) but the young people seem to love it. They have gym, fitness and other type of classes available. We are looking forward to our first year membership. read more

Most unprofessional gym environment I have ever encountered, no etiquette from members slamming weights breaking machines and spending long periods of time on each machine which shouldn't be an issue but there is only 1 of each machine. Staff members judged me for lifting more than the average person while I was working off of my numbers that will help me improve my strength the layout of the gym is very confusing and there are a lot of ways to make the gyms layout better. Another note is I am all for younger children working out. However, there is no reason for kids that appear to be 10-12 years old using the gym especially when they don't have adult supervision I am shocked that this is allowed as most gyms have an age requirement. Another issue is there are clear and posted gym rules that members seem to take as suggestions, slamming weights on machines, wearing flip flops in the gym etc. if there are gym rules they should be enforced by the staff. The bench press racks are not bolted into the floor and are crooked, the dumbbells are unorganized and the members that pay hard earned money deserve better than what the establishment has to offer. read more

Mt Vernon is beautiful modern facility! Before ice skating, a running track directly above one of the ice rinks, provided a great place to get warmed up while figure skaters beautifully worked on the ice below. On my way out I passed by a great looking rock wall and a beautiful swimming facility. I also appreciated the efficient, helpful and friendly front desk staff! Perfect outdoor post-Covid wood trail! Great urban forested oasis. Hikers, bird watchers and BMX bicycle hobbyists trek the trails. Forests are close to homes. There are canals, bridges, a few fences and overpasses. Trees dangerously uncared for, lying in trails, eaten by the weather, termites and fallen. *Out-of-towner Point of View* I thought this recreational center was great! Wish we had something like this in my town. While visiting from out of state, my family and I decided to drop by Mt Vernon. We were in search of an ice skating rink. Initially we wanted to visit Potomac Row but skating outdoors seemed intolerable. Being a Los Angeles native makes anything under 60 degrees feel freezing. Mt Vernon came recommended due to it being an indoor facility. It was worth a shot. This center offers various recreational activities (swimming, gym, Zumba, youth dance classes, ice skating, etc.). It appeared that different activities garnered different rates. Ice skating for the the four of us was $33. Staff was friendly. Parking was plentiful. Would definitely visit again. read more

The facility is okay (but old). There are plans for an expansion, but because it's Fairfax County-owned, the expansion will be SLOW and LABORIOUS. Collectively, the front desk staff is warm, friendly and professional. The people who use the facility can be just the opposite. If you're here to swim laps, it can be like driving in DC (every person for themselves and it can REALLY bring out the worst in people). It's not unusual for people to try and cut in front of others who have waited patiently for a lane. I called out one clown who cut in front of several people(and who had his young son with him), and his response was "We've been waiting long enough". Into the pool he went...only to have another person jump into the lane to share with the father-son team. Poetic justice! Anyway, pack your patience on the weekend or on holidays. Lost of kids (usually not a problem) and lots of parents (who can often BE THE PROBLEM)! If you can go during the week, go early in the morning. The pool isn't quite as crowned as on the weekend, and the people are a lot more polite. read more

This recenter has been temporarily closed for renovation since early 2023 and is projected to take 2 years to complete. The plans for the new facility look fantastic, compared to the current. Everything previously was not terrible, although I always noticed a sort of musty smell when I was there, the pool seemed a bit mucky, and there are signs of building degradation. The quality of service from staff has gone through drastic changes over the years. Looking forward to the upgraded facility, which is said to have a 2 story fitness center, indoor track, remodeled pool and "NHL sized" skating rink. read more

Yikes, I think I'm literally allergic to the place. I'm sensitive to chlorine (usually makes me sneeze and itch), but I had a full-blown, multi-day allergic reaction after my last lap swim here. I sneezed constantly, couldn't breathe through my nose, and had hives. I took Benadryl, which helped a bit, but something is up. This place is extreme. I haven't been back because can't afford to be incapacitated for two days. As an aside, it would be nice if water walkers/floaters/chillers could share a lane, but I know that people swim at different speeds. read more

We had a birthday swim party for my granddaughter at their indoor pool and party room. We were the only party there and it was a very slow day. They refused to give us access to decorate and set up for the party until 15 prior till our swim time was over. The room was empty!!! We had a lot of food/decorations so 15 minutes was not enough time to prepare. And what was the harm in letting us in 10 or 15 minutes early? IT WAS EMPTY! We asked twice so it's not like they didn't know or didn't see us standing around with carts of food! They made the kids exit the kiddie pool for what I guess was adult swim time. You are only allowed an hour which cut into that time. None of the fun things they advertise were on or running during our entire visit. We heard they turned them on almost as soon as we had to exit. Yet this was a birthday party! Why would they not turn on the kiddie things for the only party they had that day? Overall was not impressed. Just teenagers running the desk and their customer service was ZERO! This was a Sunday afternoon. For the money we paid we did feel that we got the full benefit of the party facilities that are promised. read more

Yeah, some people may like to skate at Fairfax Ice Arena in hopes that they will rub elbows (or skates, as the case may be) with an Olympic champion or get to see a hopeful practice. For me, I like to hit the ice at this place. The ice rink here is open year round, unlike other rinks like the ones at Pentagon Row or Reston Town Center. This rec center offers skating lessons, too. Or, if you aren't into freezing when it is already cold out (like it is currently), this rec center has a heated pool with a spa right next to it. Doesn't that sound awesome right about now? If you are not a rich hipsters don't go to public skating here! I drove all the way from North Carolina to teach my nephew to skate. I was holding him up on the ice and the skate guard told me I couldn't hold him. If you don't have a paid coach out there with you can't hold on to your kid while your teaching them to skate. read more

I went here to try out the pool. My brother-in-law was in town and not wanting to lose training momentum in preparation for an upcoming triathlon; a 25m pool is about the minimum requirement to do any sort of distance work. The pool itself is nice, albeit warm (82 deg F) for any sort of intense workout - especially if you're planning to follow on soon after with bike or run (we did). Clean, not overly chlorinated or crowded, and I forgot my goggles and still managed 1500m without too much eye burn. Showers are not bad, but not so nice that if you forget shower shoes you shouldn't stop by CVS and pick up some Lamisil. But... the price. If you live in Old Town, and I do (3.2 mi away on the road, less as the crow flies), the cost is $9.90 because I'm a non-resident. Residents pay $7.40. It's an Arlington County thing and Alexandria is an independent city (has been since early 1700s). Cheaper than LA Fitness ($15 for one-day fee) on Route 1, but not as nice and they have a LOT more for that $5 differential. They lost me at "you're not a local." Check out other pools unless this is right across the street; even then, you may not be a local. read more

This review is for the pool at Mt. Vernon RECenter. We had a winter pool birthday party for my son this past weekend at Mt. Vernon RECenter and I was very pleased with the entire experience. The room reservation is affordable ($50/hr) and then you pay per guest at a discounted rate of about $5pp. You have an unlimited amount of time at the pool, and you can even go back into the pool after you're done with the party room. The lifeguards are attentive, the pool water is warm, the "beach" area for kids is a good size for smaller kids, the locker room is clean, and the people manning the lobby desk were very pleasant and helpful. Highly recommend this facility for your kid's pool party! They will have a great time. read more

The Mount Vernon RECenter was an excellent place to ice skating. Took our grandkids down for an afternoon skate on Saturday. The staff was fabulous, they were taking precautions due to COVID and we appreciated their extra efforts to make the place safe. The center has declined dramatically since I've been swimming here. They now close the pool entirely to the public every afternoon and many holiday weekends for the local swim team and meets. The ladies locker room is a crowd of selfie taking teenagers. Complaints to staff are met with eye rolls and claims of no responsibility. The kids working the desk always say the "manager" isn't on site and offer me a business card for a voicemail. Calls go unreturned. It's a real shame, but goes to show how important good management is to any business. read more

I went here today for public skate time. The rink might be very nice, but I wouldn't know, because there were no public skate hours at the time I went. That's not the cause of the low rating, though; it's possible that I misread the online schedule, so I'm not holding that against them. What I am holding against them is the dismissive, rather rude attitude of the woman at the information desk when I went up and asked about public skate times. She treated me as if I were ridiculous for even asking about it (because we all memorize the skating schedule, I suppose?) and offered no additional information beyond, "It's not public skate now." Nothing about when public skate hours would be held next, nothing. It took her colleague to come over and at least give me a calendar with the skate times on it. I wasn't at all impressed. I'm going to stick with Kettler, which is where I usually skate, and the staff are actually polite and helpful. read more

Over all this facility is great! Not perfect by any means, but no place is! For a county run facility, they do a great job. A majority of their staff are very courteous and overly helpful. Again, no place is perfect, but they do a great job. We have been going to this recreation center for over three years. So we have a lot of experiences in the pool, rink, and fitness equipment. We haven't done any classes but we have watched a few and they seem well run. I recommend it to all that live around the area. We have a family of six, kids are from 9-20, and we pay $137 for a months membership, very good value, includes classes also. read more

I go to this rec center several times a week for figure skating. Everyone that work's here is pretty pleasant. Which is great! I have nothing to complain about, can only say good things about this rec center. read more
