Hotel A relatively…read morenewer establishment, the Homewood Suites in Carlisle was the location I picked when needing to spend a week in the area for work. Check in was a breeze and the lovely lady working the evening I got into town was happy and just extremely pleasant to deal with. she got me on my way in a few moments after I arrived. Rooms were good sized and very clean- as were all areas of the establishment: Common areas, hallways etc. Bed was comfy, and the hot water was hot - without having to wait forever. Perfect. In the morning, they offer what I would say is one of the best free breakfasts I've had in quite some time. Coffee was not only hot, but tasted very good - a rare find these days. The hot offerings changed daily and pretty much every dietary preference was covered in some fashion. the folks doing kitchen duty were obviously very dedicated to their jobs, and it showed. Round it all out with an indoor pool and fitness center as well as a small outdoor patio seating area, and you have a very good place to unwind after a long day of meetings or whatever it is that brings you to town. Overall a wonderful experience and I would absolutely use this location again if back in the area.

My employer booked this hotel for our staff. Had I known this was a pet-friendly hotel with no…read moredesignated pet floors or pet-free floors, I would have requested to stay elsewhere. My concern is not that the hotel allows pets--it's the lack of cleanliness throughout the property. I am staying in Room 209, and upon arrival, the floors had not been swept, and there was hair throughout the bathroom. The entire second floor has a strong odor of dog urine and feces. Even more concerning, I observed what appeared to be pet urine and feces in the common areas, extending from the dining area through the lobby and hallways. This is completely unacceptable for any hotel. If my room were not prepaid, I would be checking out immediately and booking a room at a Marriott property. I will also be sharing this experience on multiple hotel review sites because travelers deserve to know the conditions before booking. I do want to make it clear that this review is not a reflection of the front desk associate, Ale. She was professional, kind, and very accommodating. When I requested a broom and room spray because of the condition of my room, she happily provided both, and I returned them shortly afterward. Ale provided excellent customer service despite the hotel's housekeeping and cleanliness issues.

From the moment we arrived, we…read morewere greeted warmly by the manager, who even offered to carry my suitcase upstairs and place it in our room. That level of genuine hospitality set the tone for the entire visit. The hotel offers free, private on-site parking, which was an added bonus. Our room was impeccably clean, beautifully appointed, and the crisp white linens made it feel fresh, comfortable, and inviting. Before dinner, we enjoyed happy hour in the hotel's stunning historic bar. The bartender made me one of the best Old Fashioneds I've ever had--perfectly crafted and absolutely delicious. We chose to dine at the hotel's restaurant after a local enthusiastically recommended it, mentioning that the chef had earned Michelin-star recognition and insisting we try the crab cakes. We ordered the crab appetizer and a locally sourced beef steak dinner, and every bite was outstanding. It was one of those meals you'll be talking about long after you've gone home. Dinner was served on the picturesque back patio beneath a vine-covered pergola, with live music creating the perfect romantic atmosphere. One thing that truly stood out was seeing the hotel owners working alongside their staff throughout the evening. Their pride in the property and commitment to exceptional service were evident in every detail. The James Buchanan Hotel offers the perfect combination of historic charm, impeccable hospitality, and unforgettable dining. Whether you're looking for a relaxing getaway or simply an exceptional meal, I cannot recommend this place highly enough. We will absolutely be back.

If you like clean bathrooms, functioning HVAC, and nice quiet bedrooms, do not stay at this hotel…read more And when you report issues to management, they have only excuses or don't bother replying. We stayed here for two nights in December. At first glance everything seemed very nice in Room 205 but then, in looking at the bathroom, I realized there was lots of dust and hair behind the bathroom door (photo). I was going to ignore it, but then we couldn't get the HVAC to work, so I went down to the front desk. The desk manager showed us a second room (same problems), a third room (same problems with the addition of brown spots on the ceiling). We were given a fourth room - a suite - on the third floor. This room was not updated like the first few rooms but at least the HVAC was working, and at first glance everything seemed clean. At this point it was 10pm so we got ready for bed. I looked into the shower only to find a big gob of black hair in the drain (photo). I decided to leave it for the morning. We shuffled into bed (photo) and listened to the windows rattling in the windy night along with all the traffic of Main Street (surprisingly a lot). In the morning, I showed the front desk a photo of the shower situation and asked for housekeeping to take care of it. He said they don't have housekeeping on weekends. What?! I've never stayed at a major hotel chain without daily housekeeping. Also an AI search of the hotel on Facebook mentions "daily housekeeping." Each room contained a letter (photo) from Jefferey Shepherd, VP of Operations, urging patrons to text or call with any issues. I texted him for the first time during our stay (with no reply). We avoided the shower stall horror show and showered at a nearby relatives' place - super inconvenient. We also noticed a dirty chair in the living room - like someone peed on it (photo). That night we tried watching TV but couldn't get any of the three remotes to work (photo). At least we got a decent night's sleep the second night. Sunday morning we went to the front desk to check out, rang twice for the clerk (photo) but he never showed up, so I left the room keys on his chair and left. Skip the cold breakfast, which is all they offer, and walk up the block to One North (photo) for a hot meal and delicious gourmet coffee. I called Jeff Shepherd after returning home. We had a cordial conversation and he offered to refund our stay (over $300) which I gratefully and thankfully accepted. One week later, still no refund so I texted him, which he read and again didn't bother replying. Another week passed, I called him again and left a voicemail asking why he changed his mind about the refund. More time passed and I emailed the company that manages the James Buchanan - Capital Hotels. STILL no response, so I'm forced to include a mention of the awful customer service in addition to the dirty hotel. I don't mind old, historic places, but they shouldn't be this dirty, and the HVAC should be in good working condition. Do yourself a favor and stay at one of the other hotels down the street. I know we will.
