I walked over the Calgary MEC to look for some hiking shoes. A work friend (with an MEC Card) joined me and warned that I could probably get this item cheaper at REI in the US. I then took a look at the prices, compared selection with Atmosphere across the street, and headed straight to the closeout section. I found a nice Columbia brand in my size that were comfortable and half off. They also did really well on the Plain of Six Glaciers (Lake Louise) the next day. This MEC Store is handsome, roomy over its 2 floors and has a really nice selection of stuff. The Associates were friendly, knowledgeable, and very helpful. When I arrived back in California, I went ahead and sent in my $5 for my own MEC Card. I will be returning to Canada sometime in the future, and you never know when a local MEC might come in handy.

Even if you're not necessarily the outdoorsy kind, there's a ton of things that Mountain Equipment Co-op carries that no other place in town is likely to have. My sister started training for a variety of different marathons and was partaking in The Amazing Race in her city. She needed one of those backpacks that carries only water & snacks, and I looked around in a million different places I couldn't find anything of the like. Finally, I went to Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC), and yes, of course, they had it, along with a variety of styles & colours. What I love about MEC is that it's ouber friendly, even for the non-jock type. I mean if it was even remotely pretentious there's a good chance a lot of us would never step foot into it. But it's welcoming, it's easy to find things, and it does truly carry just about anything you'll ever need for the 'outside world'. The prices are ridiculously reasonable, and the quality is the best you can get. The people that work there are helpful and the store itself is laid out so well that you can shop according to outdoor activity (Ie: Camping, Hiking, Cycling, etc.) Just a tip for those of you who have never been here before. You DO need an account/membership in order to shop here. Kinda like Costco. So when you get to the til, they will ask you for your membership phone number. What I do, is I just use my Mom's, and they are cool with that. So as long as someone in your family, or someone you know has an account with MEC, you can shop there. Another tip for all you newbies: Most MEC products are covered under a lifetime warranty. For example, if you ever buy a backpack from MEC and the zipper breaks, or it rips, they will replace it for you! The warranty isn't just a year or two, it's a LIFETIME warranty! How sweet it is!!! Next time you need to buy some specialty outdoor/sports goods, give MEC a try. I can pretty much guarantee that they'll have what you're looking for. You're welcome.

I have been a patron of MEC since the early nineties, when I used to live in the Yukon and one memorable stint of minus 40 degree weather in Yellowknife with a minus 60 degree wind-chill. Let's start with my basics, I got my first MEC membership in Vancouver and used to tote my blue MEC bag, you know one of the first over the shoulder and off to the side portfolio bags of the 90s. This lasted me throughout my university incarnation, I thought I was fashionable and savvy, it was waterproof and could carry my books and my ultra thick ACER lab top (DOS). I also remembered when living in Whitehorse the local church, the Mary House used to have first of the month donation sales; my friends and I would scramble across the fence and wrestle each other for that MEC Merino jacket or that extra warm thermal MEC underpants or turtleneck. I swear I even got bruises. MEC was the best for living up north and for 7 years whether it was skiing in the wintertime, or backpacking across the Chilkoot in the summer, you never left without your Mountain Equipment Coop Paraphernalia. But the strongest memory for me is having your car battery die on the lonely highway back to the cabin in the middle of winter, with northern lights dancing above you and 23 hours of darkness surrounding you. You thanked god you had on thermal gloves and moonboots from MEC until that faithful car or truck would pass by. The list can go on, but as other reviewers have already sited, expect the best equipment for whatever season or sport, with a lifetime guarantee. And I will say this lifetime guarantee has a twist because MEC has sincerely saved mine many times.

I came on a mission for a cowgirl hat and left with the perfect cowgirl hat fitted and banded just for me. And it is indeed a nice hat; 2 weeks later I was at a country music festival with over 30000 people and received many compliments. And just in case I needed further confirmation a set of cowboys in the 'real gear' were strolling by and one stopped in his tracks, looked at me and said, "Now fellows, that there is a nice hat." That pretty much says it all.

Gentlemen, this was once the garb with which we faced the world everyday. There was no room for childishness. No baggy jeans, no baseball caps (turned backwards like the wearer's brain), and no skateboarding under any circumstances. My grandfather was one of these men, and even when he was in his late '80s, he would never leave the house without a real hat, a manly fedora. Smithbilt Hats deals in manly fedoras, and cowboy hats. All custom-fitted, and made in-house for customers. These don't go cheap, but after my experience today, I will never consider wearing anything else. I have been eyeing a real fedora for some time. I got used to the look of wearing a hat by purchasing a low-level wool felt fedora online. It looked good on me. I felt it was time to make the look permanent. Perhaps even iconic. Smithbilt Hats is iconic. You walk in, and you smell the rich scent of the felts and, the wood floors. You can hear the craftsmen chatting in the back. It's an experience getting fitted into one of these babies. I settled on a coffee-coloured fedora with a 2 1/2 " brim. Luckily, my massive dome required some extra customizing that was done in the back of this marvelous workshop. As an aside, I decided to replace the hat's ribbon to one more suiting my taste. It's an incredible place, and hopefully, not a dying one. The hats are solid stuff, made to last years. They are generational pieces that transcend trends, and marketing gimmicks.

A young woman working in the store was so helpful. Not pushy at all. We had a few laughs walking around the store. Forman's has high end apparel and great inventory. My fiance and I are getting married in Toronto in September of this year. His groomsmen and our fathers live in the Calgary, the Caymans, Ottawa, and Toronto. Suiting all these men proved to be a very difficult task. Enter Formans. The staff at Formans are unlike any staff I have EVER met. It is a family run business, and it is clear that they are passionate and proud of what they do. Their store is absolutely gorgeous, with beautiful clothing. Their knowledge is exceptional. Their friendliness is out of this world. And *genuine*. I left their store wide-eyed and speechless. Being self-employed myself, I am often frustrated at the poor customer care received these days. The staff at Formans blew my mind. My fiance and his men look stunning. They have all said nothing but amazing things about Formans. They truly treat you like family. Unfortunately I had an accident a few weeks ago that leave me with a injuries and deformities that will still be evident on my wedding day. At hearing this from my fiance, Simone at Formans surprised me and sent me this absolutely beautiful, large floral arrangement. I called and expressed my appreciation. Actually brought tears to my eyes. This woman owes me nothing and barely knows me. What a kind soul! Men: Go to Formans. Their quality of goods, sales team, knowledge, and hearts are just plain exceptional. I will be boasting about them and sending them as much business as possible because it is 100% deserved. They never asked me to review them but I'm doing this to show them my gratitude and support. Thank you for everything, Formans!!!
