This art gallery is so inspiring!…read more I definitely recommend this gallery to anyone local or visiting town as it is full of local, colorful folk art. The space itself is gorgeous with rusty orange walls with brick showing through in some areas and beautifully displayed framing supplies behind the counter. This is a pretty small gallery but has lots of really cool art in different mediums as paintings, woodblock prints, relief sculptures, face jugs and other ceramics. Folk art is usually any art created by an artist with no formal training. This gallery carries art mainly by folk artists in the southern region and they carry art by more than 40 different artists. I love to stop by here when I'm downtown and just soak up the colorful, vibrant, thought-provoking art. Some of my favorite work that they are currently carrying is by Kent Ambler (bird prints) and Bernard Gore (wood carvings/paintings). This is a must-visit Asheville gallery.

They are located in an old house (I believe) that has been transformed into an art gallery/ framing studio/ Art bar/ Studio space. The upstairs level is the art gallery. It is absolutely gorgeous with each room with different colored painted walls to make the art on display really pop. They have dragon head sculptures, calligraphy art, burlesque photography, unique jewelry and so much more. My favorite part of this gallery is actually one of the walls-one of the owners has been (over time) gold leafing one of the walls and it is absolutely stunning. I am dreaming of doing this in my future home one day myself now. The bottom level of the space is where the magic happens. There is an "art bar" which is full of all the art supplies that you could imagine. You can take art workshops here with a group of friends, do an art project by yourself, or do a boxed art project with all of the instructions and materials provided. I recently did a group Mixed Media art workshop. A group of six of us did a three hour workshop led by Patrice. She is a great teacher, the class was super affordable, and it was super fun! For $35-$60 (depending on canvas size), we each created our own unique textured, colorful artwork. We were instructed on how to use the different materials (paint, stamps, modeling paste, mod podge, h20 colors, pitt pens, oil pastels, napkins, tissue paper, etc) and given inspiration. Within the three hour time period, each of us was able to start and complete a piece of art. I truly love this place and recommend it for anyone who loves looking at art (walk through the gallery), anyone who is intimidated by the idea of making art (take a no-pressure workshop with Patrice), or active artists (always good to try new things). Bring your friends, your family, your coworkers. Super fun!

We had not walked more than a few paces before we were accosted by a super aggressive man who barked "CAN I HELP YOU?" and then literally turned and walked away. I said, "would you like us to leave?", and at first he didn't respond, just stared at me. I asked again. Then he yelled "yes". WTH? My wife is an artist and we have a working studio in St. Pete - I would never treat a potential customer that way. Every other time we've been in there we've had a great experience. This man's** behavior was seriously off and has made us not want to return. You must be well enough off to not care about offending customers. There are enough other studios for you to visit. If you want to avoid being attacked, I'd recommend skipping this one. **this was the studio straight ahead at the top of the ramp.

Located in the River Arts District, It's like an old service garage or something akin to that. And everywhere you go there are different artists creating their craft. Level after level, corner after corner. Come here to explore because you will most certainly miss something if you don't scour this building from top to bottom. Take for example, my friend's gallery. You go in the front door- wend your way to the back, go down a flight of sitars, wend your way back to the front and Viola! Micheal Ebbs Fine Art Photography. You can also see his work on his website www.photoreciprocity.com. Good luck finding your way back. I kept going the wrong way on the stairway but it just let me find some other great artists in the place! Love the range of art that is contained in here and the fact that these are working studios so you can see people as they paint their pottery or play with clay. And there are other galleries just up the street so be sure to see all that this area has to offer. There is a small parking lot across the street if you drive, and if you take a cab- be sure you know where you are going- this place must be hard to find as my cab driver, in frustration finally just turned the meter off and drove me around until I recognized the place! They are open Tuesday - Saturday 10 - 4 but be sure to check their website before heading out as they also have several special events that you can partake in. So let me end where I began. It's interesting. Very interesting. And worth the trip out of the central downtown area.
