What a fun find! Located inside an old department store, this local artist studio/gallery is one to visit. Multiple levels of Asheville talent top to bottom. Art (print and painting), clay, soap, fragrance, more and more. And there is an old fashioned soda fountain to boot. This historic FW Woolworth from 1938 was restored in 2001 and now features over 170 local artists as well as a fully functional Soda Fountain. There's no admission charge, so walk through and marvel at the ceramics, fine art, jewelry, pottery, crafts and more in this 20,000 square foot space on two levels. So many opportunities to see Asheville and local artists. It was a kick to see the Soda Fountain! You can easily spend an hour here. I'd love to come back again soon and I'm definitely going to follow some artists that I discovered. read more

Woolworth Walk is a must visit in Asheville. I didn't realize how much artwork is around town, but it was a pleasant surprise to find this all out in my most recent visit, including here at Woolworth Walk. I didn't know what to expect at this historic building that used to be a department store in its earlier days. When I walked by one day, I saw in the shop windows that there were many people walking around the space, as it had walls of artwork displayed, so decided to pop in. That's what I learned that this space is an art gallery where people can buy local artwork that's sold here. The space goes beyond the main floor as there's more artwork on the lower level, with public restrooms at the end of the halls and an old school soda fountain shop on the main floor. Woolworth Walk is an inviting and welcoming space where locals and tourists alike come together to shop for local art and gifts. The entire space features many local artists in a range of different mediums. I ended up leaving with some prints to frame for my space. Visit Woolworth Walk and support local artwork! read more

It's basically an indoor flea market filled with booths offering homemade fare from soaps to essential oils n creams to bath salts to jewelry to artwork using any medium that comes to mind! There is a counter to buy beverages, but what a sight to feast your eyes upon. So many artisans booths with unique art for purchase. I could have spent hours here, but had to move on. Woolworth Walk's diner will take you back in time. The sandwiches are yummy. You can get a hot dog for only $5.50 so this is a big time lunch value. I went with the BLT piled high with bacon, lettuce, tomato, & mayo on toasted wheat bread served in a basket with a pickles and Lays chips. You can browse the beautiful handcrafted pieces and art while you wait. Service is ordering at the check stand, and they call out your name. Only complaint was something was leaking or condensing all over the floor, and I witnessed 2 folks almost fall when slipping in the water-one was an employee. It is a very large gallery at 20,000 sq feet. 170 local artists are given an area of the store to display and sell their work. The artists do varied work from painting and photography to glass to pottery to metal to mixed media to wood to fiber to jewelry. With the vast array of artwork there is sure to be someone's work you will enjoy if not many. I never leave empty handed. This is a free local art gallery that deserves to be much more popular. The historical milkshake maker is the main attraction but the art is why you should be visiting. You find a main level and basement filled with photographs, water color, and digital art. Sometimes the artists will even be there to discuss their work. This is a really awesome repurposing of an old Woolworth store. I almost missed out on this entirely. I'm not sure how I heard about it, but the reason I did at all was because of the soda fountain, not the art gallery, which is by far the main focus of the place. To start, they have a soda fountain for which Woolworth was once famous. As with many lunch and drink counters in the civil rights era, this one has its stories about people taking a stand against racism. I love history, and that's part of the reason I wanted to visit here. The drinks aren't anything to write home about, really; I had the strawberry shortcake and my partner a vanilla malt. A-OK. Then there's the art. So many artists--there has to be at least a hundred artists represented here. There is so much to look at; you'll find sculpture, pottery, jewelry/metalsmithing, painting, textiles, functional art.... I bought a few things here, and identified several artists whose work I really really love. Wandering here actually is what pushed me to visit the River Arts District, because I found myself connecting with some of this work more than I expected (I'm totally unsophisticated when it comes to art). Be sure to sign up for their newsletter and join the raffle! I happened to do so on my second visit here and won a mug by one of the artists. It's really lovely and a nice souvenir to remind me of my time in Asheville every time I use it. read more

This is a cool building, and it's neat to see the soda counter, but the actual soda offerings were disappointing. We came here after going for a walk through downtown Asheville. Most of the building is now an art gallery, and most of the art did not interest my kids. But the promise of ice cream and soda certainly interested them. Service was slow. You order at the counter, and then you seat yourself. The clerk clearly didn't want us to eat there, maybe out of fear that my kids would knock over their drinks because when I said that the order was for dining in, he really pushed me towards accepting the to go cups. I get it, but it would have been more fun to drink from the glass soda cups. I ordered an egg cream. It was the worst egg cream I've ever had. To me, an egg cream is chocolate syrup, some milk, and carbonated water that is beaten up to a froth. What I watched them prepare was Torani vanilla syrup, a splash of milk, and then soda water from the Coke dispenser. It was tasteless and not frothy at all. So disappointing. My daughter had a strawberry soda, and again, it was Torani strawberry syrup with soda water from the Coke dispenser. My son had a strawberry milkshake, and he said it was tasty but not as good as most milkshakes he's tried. I think if you come here for the art, maybe you'll be happy. Or if you want to look at the architecture, you'll be happy. But if you want a tasty treat, you might want to keep on walking. The drinks and treats from the soda fountain are hastily made and not particularly authentic to Woolworth's. read more

Love Woolworth Walk. It was in my book mark to visit place for a while. This place is a two storey building. The street level is at the walk in entrance with big display. They also has the basement with additional artwork. It is worth the walk when you visit Asheville North Carolina. It has various artist. At least 40 different artists on display. I like this private own gallery allow multiple artists display their wort. The sense or promotes the local artist can seem throughout the Asheville but this place has the most concentrated artists display. Some of the art are unique, creative, colorful, and attractive. I like most of the art display here. The visit can be 2 hours if you go detail. Inside the gallery, has a coffee diner that you can sip your coffee and enjoy the art. read more

What a cool way to preserve a historic Woolworth Building. This place is a huge art gallery, almost 20,000 square feet, with an old fashioned soda fountain. It will remind older folks of the Woolworth Luncheonette counters of the past. This particular building was built in 1938. When we visited, we were in a hurry, so we just stopped in for chocolate malts. During my next visit, I would love to spend some extra time looking at the art created by local artists. Slowly moseying through Woolworth Walk is one of my favorite things to do when I'm leisurely wandering around downtown. It's a huge space full of awesome art for sale, ranging from pottery to jewelry to handsewn clothing to paintings to photography and everything in between. Everything is hand made and I believe that most of the art is made by local artists. It really is incredible! Woolworth Walk is open 7 days a week and they also have a small Soda Fountain diner with bar stools where you can order old school treats such as milkshakes, BLT and ice cream sundaes. Woolworth Walk is a pretty large space, with two floors filled with artwork. If you go in at the right time, you can get henna done by a henna artist downstairs. Each month, there is also an art opening with a featured artist in the front studio space by the Woolworth entrance. The openings are usually chill with snacks and wine. There are hundreds of artists with work on display here. I could spend hours in here just walking around admiring the art and getting inspiration from the work. It occupies the historic Woolworth's storefront, complete with a fully operational Old Fashioned Soda Fountain built to resemble the original Woolworth luncheonette. F.W. Woolworth was established in 1938. In my young days in Chicago, my mother and grandmother referred to Woolworth's as the Five and Dime. All I remember is being excited to go, because they sold really huge and really good slices of pizza PLUS I could get a toy! TRIVIA - Did you know that Woolworth was the original parent company to Foot Locker? It was born in their stores as the sporting good department. It became it's own entity on September 12, 1974 when the first Foot Locker opened in the Puente Hills Mall in California (still open today). Woolworth Walk features about 170 local artists offering everything from jewelry and crafts to fine art in nearly 20,000 square feet of space. I enjoyed our visit thoroughly although we did not venture downstairs. Wonderful! Absolutely worth a visit! If you like art, you will love this place. For that matter, even if you go for the soda fountain, you are going to have a great time! I love the atmosphere at Woolworth Walk. There are so many small sections showing so many different works by artists and artisans: painting, photography, jewelry, soap, scents, etc. You are going to spend more time there than you would expect to work your way through all the sections. Cute little sandwich counter and soda fountain in a massive art gallery in downtown Asheville. They make sandwiches, ice cream sundaes, and old-fashioned soda fountain drinks. I was craving something salty so I ordered a grilled cheese. We got an adult grilled cheese and it was massive with 3 slices of bread!! And the sandwich cans with a pickle spear and bag of chips. They use boar's head for their meat and cheese. I didn't have a sundae or fountain drink but I saw people there enjoying them. The art gallery is huge with many different local artists' work in a variety of media. There is art from a few dollars to thousands on 2 floors of the building. If you're looking for a gift for yourself or friends this is a great place to look in AVL without feeling overly touristy / cheesy. I would give it 4.5 stars if that was available. We have been here a couple time to view the art. There is a nice variety of wall art, pottery, jewelry and also different styles; Art Deco, contemporary, classic. The aisles are wide and the displays are nicely arranged. We did notice that the lower level isn't as professional as the first floor. This time we also had lunch at the counter. Five in the party, we ordered at the counter and then you wait for them to call your name. We were able o get a table that the 5 of us could sit at together. Two had Reuben sandwiches which were delicious and very large, they couldn't finish them. Two of the group had the grilled cheese with bacon, both declared delicious!!! I had the chicken salad on GF bread, the bread was good, and the chicken salad was well seasoned with good chunks of chicken and not too much mayo. I like savory chicken salad so this is a heads up that this is not sweet and it does not have grapes in it. They have a water station and old fashion soda. We didn't have one but we watched them making shakes and wished to have one but restrained ourselves because it's been a lot of eating over the holidays. I highly recommend walking through the art and for a nice casual ( inexpensive) lunch in downtown without a long wait I recommend lunch or an afternoon snack/treat at Woolworth read more

Just a general observation, but this place seemed to feature a little more whimsical art than some of the other places. Unless it's a big piece that requires assistance, just take your item to the counter near the entrance to pay for it. They'll even hold items for you if you want to keep shopping. read more
